Friendly service but still boring Burger and overpriced. Decoration is cool tho. Old school

This place is usually always busy so they must be doing something right or are they? I just don't know why people go nuts for this place. Must be the nostalgia! The few time I have visited the service has been great. The burgers on the other hand are tasty but small, recommend the double for anyone other than a child. I guess by biggest beef (pardon the pun) would be the fries. They are the garden variety fast food shoestring type. Not what you would expect at such a popular place. Apparently the owners are considering changing this in the future. If this place put out a top notch home made hand cut fry, the line ups would stop traffic on the Bedford highway....:-) Like I said! the place is always busy so check it out for yourself. read more

The Chickenburger... Or the Tickenburger as it's affectionately known around my folks place. A staple, check that.. THE staple in Bedford. Has anyone whose heard of Bedford not heard of the Chickenburger? Honestly. It just feels like you step back into time when you stroll inside it's confines. A big ol' jukebox with plenty of neon signs humming away. Your choice of chickenburgers, classic burgers and old fashioned milkshakes await. I most recently had my very first Chickenburger. I was presently surprised by it, not greasy, just really tasty. An interesting combination. I washed it down with a vanilla milkshake. I went out to The Chicken Burger last week with my parents. I had been to the Chicken Burger when I was a kid, but at that point I was a vegetarian so I really only ate the fries. This most recent visit was the first time going since I've started eating poultry, so I finally got to try the acclaimed chicken burger. I had the meal, with a large fries and a glass bottle of coke, for the decent price of about $8.00. The coke in the glass bottle was a nice retro touch and the portion of fries was great, they were nice and crispy and not overly salty. The verdict on the chicken burger? Underwhelming, it's just chunks of chicken on a steamed bun, it tastes exactly how it sounds. I found it bland, and one note. For the same basic result, I rather have a piece of roasted chicken and a fresh dinner roll... I also tried my dad's chocolate milkshake as I had debated whether to get one or not, it was really thin without a lot of flavour, so I'm glad I passed on it. I did love the retro feel to the place, and the working jukebox, and even though it's not my thing I'm happy to see a local fast food business thriving even with other chain options in sight. read more

The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of their sweet 50s atmosphere. Aside from that they were a big disappointment. My bf and I went for a drive to enjoy the summer night last week and came across this place and stopped for ice cream. We were so impressed with the neat environment, we decided to come back to try the food for supper. He and I are big on anything classic or vintage so we figured it would be right up our alley. First, their prices are a bit ridiculous. I had to talk myself into spending it by saying that it's for the sake of a fun outing, a treat night, and that the portion and quality likely reflects the price, right?! Wrong. The patty on my cheeseburger was so pathetic that it was smaller than my mediocre 'WONDER' hamburger bun - so much so that I mostly tasted bun, and ketchup. Yum. I tacked an extra dollar onto the price for bacon and received 2 slices of bacon no longer than my thumb. If you're expecting quality, real bacon, you won't find it here. Its comparable to what you'd find on a gross breakfast sandwich from Tims. Also - they threw the cheese and bacon on half the burger so the other half was hanging out the side. Get real. Second, DO NOT go for the basket of "Frings" (fries and onion rings) that will cost you nearly $5 because you'll find something better and tastier in the frozen section of Foodland. (Yep, McCain's would be a big upgrade). I think if I were to pick out the fries from under my car seat and microwaved them a minute they'd still top the Chicken Burgers tasteless boring fries. Last, the $3 portion of clam strips is a joke. Most of them are pebbles of batter smaller than a rabbit turd and they come in a box about the size of your palm. For two cheeseburgers, one serving of fries with onion rings, one small sampler of clam strips and one bottle of pop to share our bill was $25 LOL. Idk how this place is still in business. It'll be my last time ever wasting my money there. Ps if you're looking for a delicious mouth-watering diner cheeseburger, go to the Ardmore on quinpool road. First of all, this place feels like a second home to me. I've been visiting the Chickenburger since I was a child. The atmosphere and attention to detail always gets me. I hope they never change their decor. It's a really fun experience and the jukebox is really fun to play. As for the food, I always tend to order the same thing. Chickenburger with mayo, fries and a Coke slushy. I highly suggest the mayo, because otherwise the burger is quite bland. The fries are okay, not really the best out there. They are very thin. And, last, they have gotten rid of the coke slushy and now only have berry flavours. I hope that maybe thats a temporary decision. I guess I'll have to try the milkshake next time. read more

I realize I might be facing the wrath of the Haligonian masses by not giving 'The Chicken Burger' a full five outa five but I guess I was just expecting something a tad different. For one thing, I didn't know that chicken burger was more of an old timey fast food joint and less of a quintessential diner. If you were expecting a little older lady (circa Grease) to ask you if 'you wanted cherry or vanilla coke with that' then you might be in for a surprise. There is seating available at the chicken burger but you have to head up to the counters yourself. Don't get me wrong though, there is still plenty of ambience to go around at this fine old establishment. Old time pop bottles and cute old booths are both of note! One thing I really enjoyed about chicken burger was that neither the prices nor portion sizes appear to have changed dramatically over 70 years. That's right folks, you aren't likely to be able to gorge yourselves off of one simple order and you shouldn't need a to-go container either. I personally loved my cheeseburger and fries and didn't feel sick from the grease of it later on either. A few more condiment variations would have been a nice touch. onion, mustard and ketchup just doesn't cut it for me although I appreciate the authenticity. One thing to note: The original chicken burger isn't the newfangled grilled breast or breaded patty that you may have been expecting but more closely resembles a post xmas turkey sandwich with bits of real chicken and sauce mixed in. It's a stand by. A good alternative to fast food with real chicken on the burgers and homemade hamburger patties cooked on a real grill. However, it is fast food. Frozen fries and onion rings (pass on those), and over priced fountain drinks. The chicken soup is homemade....but passed those three things- nothing else is. Staff is friendly, but don't make an effort passed the counter. And give you limited condiments. I do enjoy it from time to time, I like the atmosphere and the milkshakes are pretty tasty too- thin and smooth. But don't expect too much. The burgers are tasty but nothing special. And it used to be super pricey- but recently they introduced combos- so it is a little less on the expensive side. read more

The place looks fun and a neat aspect is you can order canteen take-away style. Got the chicken burger without bacon or cheese (yucky cause it's chopped up chicken), thinking it would be in traditional NS hot sandwich style. Not a stitch of sauce, seasoning..just tasteless chopped up chicken on a soggy bun. Fries tasted like freezer but the onion rings were awesome...so there's that. Won't be back. read more

The Chicken Burger is a fun little fast food place. The food is only ok but the inside is filled with great things like a free Duke Box. I recommend going if your in the area and need something to eat but have a time limit. read more

I feel like the chicken burgers used to have gravy? Am I crazy? Now you get dry diced chicken on a steamed bun. Blah. The beef burgers are okay. Nothing special. Onion rings are overly salty and fries also nothing special. Milkshakes aren't bad but not my favourite. (Hint... go up the road a tad to the other diner). After hearing all the rave reviews, I went there and ordered a chicken burger and a milkshake. The "burger" came with a set of tiny spongy bleached flour buns with chunks of tasteless chicken meat. There was some mushy substance in the meat that didn't look like fat or skin. It was pretty gross. Milkshake was okay but nothing special. Then I came home, I had a diarrhea. As someone not originally from Nova Scotia I spent 4 years hearing the rave reviews of The Chicken Burger before actually trying it out. I assumed it was a breaded chicken breast...don't know why just did. So when I got hunks of chicken on a bun I was a little disappointed. I make this at home all the time...nothing special. Didn't taste that great either. Although my husband vehemently disagrees. Ha! I've had other food their since; milkshakes, hot dogs, french fries. Those are much better. What really attracts me to the place is the atmosphere. 1950s diner setting, like stepping back in time with Fonzie on Happy Days. Jukebox and all! They also do this great thing through the summer where the vintage cars all hang out there at night. So, to each his own...but I'll never get the Chicken Burger at The Chicken Burger. read more

This place is popular with older people, partly because the decor is a throwback to the '50s and partly because the older folks actually have memories of the Chickenburger from their youth, because it's been around just that long. And the decor is good fifties fun, complete with stools and jukeboxes. Staff are super-efficient and work like clockwork, because the place is always packed. The thing is - and I hate to say it - the actual "Chickenburger" that the place is named for is rather underwhelming. It's a small, rather soggy white bun, with chunks of chopped chicken on it. The chicken appears to have been - what - boiled? it has no flavour of its own whatsoever. You can add condiments and onions and stuff, but it doesn't really change the fact that the chickenburger doesn't really fly with me. read more

Honestly with a name like chicken burger it was exactly that it was missing! The Big Jack...... The Montreal smoked meat was the highlight, lightly crisp and warm strait of the flattop! The deep fried pickle medallions added a nice contrast to the spicy mustard! However, the lowlight was sadly the chicken :( a once promised buttermilk battered chicken breast was relegated to what seemed more like a chicken nugget..... at least that's how it was represented in my version of The BIG Jack! I have to confess: I don't get the hype. I've eaten at the Chickenburger several times - all with friends - and I've never been overwhelmed by either the food or the service. I've heard all the rave reviews and I've tried all the recommendations and I'm still left wondering why the Chickenburger inspires such loyalty. There's nothing particularly tasty about chicken on a bun, and the onion rings - which came highly recommended - were soggy and tasteless. I suppose that the Chickenburger might be a step up over the chain fast-food joints that line the Bedford highway around it. However, I think I'd opt for McDonald's or Wendy's over the Chickenburger - and that's saying a lot. I'm giving the Chickenburger three stars because of the way it works itself into the hearts of Haligonians. It seems to still do what it has always done well. Simple food done well. Today I got their triple cheeseburger as my third stop of Halifax's burger week. It was the simplest of the 3 burgers I ate this week but no less tasty. A little more ketchup would've been good but it was a good burger at an excellent value ($5 as part of Burger Week). Over the years and many many trips to the Chickenburger, I've always ordered the chickenburger, which a like and when extending myself I've opted for a Milkshake, also tasty. Went to the chicken burger today and it was absolutely awful. I had the chicken burger and my boyfriend had the regular burger. We both threw them out and left. The buns were soggy, there was absolutely nothing but gross pulled chicken on the chicken burger with a wet bun. read more

There were about fifty employees just standing around. The old saying "too many cooks spoils the broth" seems to be true, as i recieved the worst lobster i have ever eaten in my life. It was crazy overpriced and disgusting. My friend bought the classic chicken burger, and it was just a soggy chicken sandwich. I went for the first time on Saturday June16 while in the city for the week end. Hearing that it had been around for some time, I expected something special. I ordered the chicken burger expecting a real treat! Imagine my surprise when I was given a hamburger bun with a handful of dry cut -up chicken! Not even mayonaise, let alone some other gourmet sauce. Almost choked on it. I frankly don't see what the hype is all about. You must have everyone else brain washed. I love the Chickenburger and I don't understand the negative reviews of some people here. The Chickenburger is not fine dining! They do not serve salmon tartar or French onion soup or lamb or briskets. What they do have is delicious chickenburgers on perfectly steamed buns, so mouthwatering it's hard to write about them without driving over there (I think I will go after this!). The Chickenburger is also an experience. It's a 1950's style diner in every way down to the penny scale in the doorway (yes it works!) and the old fashioned milkshakes that are made with REAL milk and not with plastic. Go to the Chickenburger for the experience, the fun, and the burgers and shakes (and fries and clam strips), and have a good time. read more

meh is right. I don't get it, I really just don't get it. Chicken that tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp even though it seemed to be real chicken had no flavour and was really dry. The fries tasted like any bag of frozen fries baked in an oven, I don't know if thyey fry or bake them here but they were so underwhelming I didn't come close to finishing them. I think I had five. Bleh. It looks like old fashioned chicken burgers and I get the nostalgia of the place but ya gotta update those burgers! They reminded us of high school cafeteria food (and not fondly). I don't get why people love this place. It's expensive for what you get and it's not even good. The burger patty is bland, the chicken burger is bland. The poutine is bland and the onion rings are way too greasy. The milkshake is some chemical mix and not real ice cream. They overcharged us for the chicken burger combo which I asked if I could get the poutine instead of the fries and, for sure I got the poutine..for full price and I paid full price for the combo and lost the fries. I would never, ever, ever, ever go back. Even if they gave out food for free, I would pass on the offer 100% of the time. Zero stars. Never again. read more

First time here and we left very disappointed. $30 for two meals and a kids meal. The fish and chips were greasy and the portion small, the chicken burger was a joke! My hubby had to go looking for the chicken as it couldn't be seen between the buns. The kids burger was much the same. We will not be returning. Not a good value at all. With it being Burger Week, we thought we would go and see what the Chickenburger had to offer. Well, the special offering was a piece of deep fried chcken with onions in their regular hamburger. No seaoning on the deep fried chicken, very tasteless. We felt like we ate something but what!!! I doubt this will become a standard menu item.
