I drove 22km from downtown all the way to Bedford to try their burgers. Its ok and reasonably priced. However I wouldn't really go there again because its simply too far for me and there's nothing that really stand out about the place and the food. I don't get all the hype. The burgers are OK. The fries aren't that great. I ordered the chickenburger once and it was dry (no sauce had ever touched it) torn up chicken with no quality control. Nasty bits mixed in with the "good" bits, etc. The only good thing about this place is Chicken Little when it's open in the summer. read more

We went to the Chicken Burger because a friend told us that it was a legendary spot in Halifax. We ordered everything that sounded good - the chicken burger, double hamburger, fries, milkshake, and apple turnover. First of all, the burgers were so tiny. Not only were the portions underwhelming, but the taste was extremely disappointing as well. The chicken burger was literally chicken bits between buns. We had to ask for some mayo, that's how bland it was. The double hamburger was nothing special either. We were really hoping the milkshake would be better, but we were sorely disappointed there as well - it reminded us of a watered down version of McDonald's milkshakes. Actually, the whole meal was similar to what you can get at McDonald's. The ambience doesn't make up for the mediocre food, especially if it costs more than the average fast food restaurant. I absolutely love their double cheeseburgers. Will always come here. One thing that they need to figure out though is that recently they are a part of Skip The Dishes, and are making people standing at their counter wait while they input & fill the Skip The Dishes orders. The Chickenburger was always a family favourite growing up and it still is a fave of mine today. My favourite thing about this spot is the MILKSHAKES!!!! They are very thin, and that's the way I like them. Strawberry is my personal fave, but the chocolate and vanilla are excellent too. I love the food here because it's fresh and made to order. Their signature chickenburger is amazing and their burgers are always done perfectly. I usually have onion rings with my meal that never disappoint. On a sunny evening, it's really nice to sit out at one of their picnic tables to enjoy your meal, or you can always dine in the 50's style eating area inside. Can't say enough good things! read more

A trip to the Chick is often a highlight. But I'm an all classic kinda girl. It's called the Chickenburger - so I order the Chickenburger and trick it out with grilled onions. It really is just yummy steamed chicken and a white warm bun. For fast-food take out option it's actually pretty healthy. The burgers are yummy, too. My kids like the hot dogs. I'm so happy there's a kids menu now. There have been some updates and changes with the new owners. But I haven't met with anything that's left me disappointed. And now that there's ice cream? I like the Chicken Burger more for the atmosphere and experience than the food. It's good but it's not the best burger I've ever had. That said, it's fun to go sit in the diner and listen to the old tunes perched atop a 50's style stool. I haven't had the actual "chicken burger" itself but the cheeseburgers are good, the fries are good, the onion rings are good...not great. Pros -tastes good -presentable -fairly clean restaurant -nice atmosphere -some friendly staff Cons -expensive -no longer fresh -long waits I see a lot of top reviews rating it as 1 star, but I wouldn't take the criticism that far. There is someone who's written a number of reviews who nitpicks every single thing (including how "robotic" the workers are). They even go on to complain that there's a tip jar. These workers get paid minimum wage in a fast paced job, they deserve at least SOME tips. A lot of them are very friendly. Don't take this persons review word for word. read more

After a daylong move, we mosey out to the Chickenburger as a treat. Only two customers - how lucky! Nope! Simple order of 3 burgers, 1 onion rings, 1 milkshake and a bottle of Coke; and the COULD NOT GET IT RIGHT! We didn't get the onion rings and got fountain pop, not a bottle. Chicken burgers are dry and tasteless. Not the same when the Innes' had it. Fish & chips are nothing outstanding. Had better at other restaurants. Hamburgers are just plain gross. Over priced for the lack of quality of food that you're getting. Do yourself a favor - go somewhere else. KFC or Swiss Chalet, anywhere. But don't waste your money here. The Chickenburger is part of Bedford's history. After decades of success, the original owners, the Innes's sold to local businessman Mikey MacDonald. So much has changed under the new ownership; no longer are fresh chicken cut up by hand, now mechanically sorted chicken is used in the Chickenburger and every time without fail you are guaranteed to get a disgusting piece of cartilage, bone or something equally as gross. No longer are the hamburgers handmade with 100% ground beef, but are frozen patties. At one time the Chickenburger could boast they had the best Haddock around, not the case now. Last evening, I had the 3 piece fish & chips for $11.95, 3 very small pieces of fish, which was more batter than haddock and extremely over done. Among all of the changes to this iconic restaurant you will find a rapid turnover of staff, gone are the days when the staff have been working there for 10, 20, even 30 years. As I stood and waited for my order, I was observing the staff. The young man working the cash and taking orders was nothing but a trained robot. Yes, he was courteous and efficient at the job assigned to him, but really he had the personality of a machine. I suppose he is not permitted to go out of character on the job, because to do so may take time and "time is money". It was clear he had a script to follow and asked questions and made responses using the same words and the same tone with each and every customer. No small talk, no how are you, hot enough for ya, some cold out, have a nice day, enjoy, nothing, only your number is 564. Plus, I really don't like the tip dish on the counter, why do you think you have earned a tip? I stood and gave you my order and passed you my hard earned cash to pay for my unsatisfactory meal and also had to wait in a line up to serve my own beverage. When my order number was called, I carried my tray to an uncleaned table with the sun blazing in through the window and shining in my eyes. Any other restaurant I have been in has blinds in the windows should the patrons choose to draw them (even the fast food chains such as McDonalds, Tim Hortons & Wendy's). At on time it was a treat to go to The Chickenburger, because it wasn't your typical fast food joint, the whole experience was just better, not anymore. We used to go there at least once a month, not anymore, I would never decide to eat there ever again. Mr. McDonald, you seem to be making a habit of buying long time successful family run businesses and then promptly selling and watching them go out of business, such as Mills on Spring Garden Road. The new owners have changed a lot of things that made the place great,for starters you were pratically mobbed by multiple and friendly employees with their paper slips eager to take your order...now there was 1 electronic cash register order taking device in operation in the middle of lunch hour today, there was a line up and a wait of at least 10 minutes just to place an order..unheard of in the Chicken burger of only a few years ago. The chicken, if you want to call it that, was obviously devoid of white meat instead the bun was filled with dark meat from who knows where complete with rubbery knuckles and one stratigically placed cube of white meat right where you take the first bite.Who are they trying to fool. I heard that they now buy mechanically deboned chicken from some processing plant in Quebec,shipped here frozen.Of course we know that the chicken used to be served freshly cooked and processed by owners out back in that secret little area they would take the bun to be stuffed.It used to be mostly all white meat.Corporate greed has struck at the Chickenburger.The hamburgers were dry and not good at all. I am not sure but I think it could be frozen prepackaged patties instead of fresh ground beef of old.The fries were good and the Coke was also okay.Speaking of Coke,the owners of the resturant should consider what happened to Coca-Cola sales when some genius decided to change the formula back in the mid-eighties..it almost put them out of buisness.Shall I go on. When I was younger (30 years ago) we were taken out to the chickenburger as a special treat. I always had a chickenburger or cheeseburger and small shake and we usually shared the onion rings. Loved it all. I just came from Chickenburger in Bedford with my lunch, a chickenburger, rings and shake, First off it cost me $12.80!!, the milkshake was as good as always the onion rings were ok, but $4.85 for an order of onion rings, really?, the biggest disappointment though was the chickenburger.....Even though it had mayo it was extremely dry, and had little to no flavour...... 52 years ago the chicken burger was our go to restaurant we lived in Halifax for 5 years and never got tired of their chicken burgers and milkshake They were the best. And have never found one that compared. . Every time we come back to Halifax we have to have our chicken burger. Well after today we don't need to go back . I was so disappointed it was AWFUL , TASTELESS AND DRY. Guess you have changed your recipe. Too bad. The saying it it ain't broke DONT FIX IT should have applied. read more
