She was very knowledgeable regarding the whole process of how they create their delicious bourbon. 4 of us, have actually been to some of the much bigger distilleries down in Kentucky, and we were impressed with the intimacy of this tour and how much fun it was in comparison. The tour was boring. The tour guide was yawning at the start of the tour. There was no cocktail to start the tour. He talked so fast we couldn't really tell what he was saying. Someone had to actually ask him to slow down. Much of what they sell at the distillery is not distilled here, let alone made here. From what I could tell they source the spirit and then blend. That's a bit nuts for the prices they charge as there are many excellent craft distilleries that do make their own whisky and that sell under their own label. What's the point touring a craft distillery if you don't get to try anything that was actually made in the craft distillery. The pours in the tasting were tiny. The tasting costs $8 at the store. If you have to, get that. Save the $7, its not worth it to walk around the distillery unless you have never seen a pot still before. read more

My family and I stumbled upon Widow Jane while trekking our way to lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We stopped and admired the fun paintings on the brick wall and decided to take a break with a whiskey tasting! The tasting was $8 a person and you got to taste 5 different bottles. The distillery was fun with seating and viewing of the machines and even roosters! The bartender was very informative and provided a great tasting. Whiskey tastings! Chocolate! Controversy! Widow Jane is a local whiskey distillery that has a pretty little space inside Cacao Prieto. Lots of windows, brick, and a beautiful tree in the middle of the building draw your eye to the place. They have a small counter where they do tastings ($8 for the classics, $21 for their special bottles- quite pricey!). Bottom line: go for the $8 tasting, it's short and sweet. The employee will take you through the story of the whiskey brand, starting with the Widow Jane mine water and the Cacao Prieto Rum moving to the lighter ryes and ending with their recent award winning bourbon. The bourbon is by far the best, though I'm not certain it's worth the $60-$70 price tag. All the whiskies are quite sweet but they all have different notes- some are quite oakey and floral, other creamy and butterscotch. The controversy, unbeknownst to me when I went, is that there have been allegations the company doesn't source the water from the limestone caves in upstate NY as it claims and that it is really distilled in Indiana and not NY. I've been to this establishment twice so far. I was walking through Red Hook and had to come in when I passed by. The staff are very cool and inviting. I've purchased three bottles of their lovely spirits. There is also a chocolate shop that's part of the business as well. I arranged a tour for my out of town guests and we all had a great time. I definitely recommend that as an activity for things to do. Overall it was a great experience and they sell a solid product. Anything they offer would make a great gift. read more

Not the best Bourbon especially for the price, not a great tour and what do I see online they are also apparently not very philanthropic? What do they have going for them? A nice high proof is what! Each bottle can taste a bit differently my gangs had about 10 over the last 1.5 years during different seasons...but I've never had one where I was like "yes this stuff rocks!" The positive reviews is for the bar next door to the distillery but the actual tour of the chocolate and the burbon is kinda of long and well samples are very much tiny. The tour starts out in the chocolate factory and it's a very clean place overall. This is a vegan chocolate factory and the burbon is made on the same location. Then the tiny sample size of burbon comes on and well it's very small sample. I was expecting and entire flight not just a NyQuil cup. The bar next door uses the same burbon to make their own versions of burbon drinks. read more

Anyone else you know went to widow jane and suffered a 70% chance of disappointment. I thought it was a pretty hyped up event and even on the website there was suppose to be 10,000 People RSVP. I think only 2 or 3,000 showed up, well it was a friday people have other options. I did get some good bourbon, can't lie about that. Full drinks were ten bucks with ice, the shots were free. I got there kind of late, didn't get much food except two beef empanadas and some flavorles Mac and Cheese. There were long lines for everything but honestly, I could have done worse for a free99 Friday night. I saw like 10 other yelpers there too. read more

I was late for my scheduled tour but that wasnt a problem. Sam was my tour guide today and he seemed a little green to giving tours but got the important info across just fine. The chocolate factory tour was interesting but I was there for the whiskey. I would have liked as much detail on the whiskey production and process as I got for the chocolate but the bulk of the info was covered. Some history about New Yorks whiskey journey would be great too. A great stop if you are in the area. Recomend the ferry if you are coming from Manhattan. read more

Was interested in doing the $8 tasting flight but stood at the bar for about 15 minutes while being completely ignored by the woman serving, not even a polite "I'll be right with you.." and when her friend walked in behind us was instantly greeted and spoken to. We were disappointed with the tour, mainly because the guide spoke too quickly and often with his back to the group, like he couldn't wait to get through it. I bought a $60 mini bourbon barrel for my partner, who followed all the curing instructions and kept it well maintained. Still, within two months the barrel started to leak, and is now unusable. read more

Waste of money for the tour. Too expensive. $21+ bucks a pop a person, and you get a short tour with small sampling of chocolates (all taste the same though, even though they claim to be all different), followed by an extremely boring one room tour of the whiskey, followed by small sampling of the rye's and whiskeys they make. I came with over 20 people and we were treated wonderfully. We got a tour of the chocolate and whiskey area. There were some great photo ops with the peacock. Vince answered every question and was beyond knowledgeable. The tasting room is a great space and the whiskeys were amazing. I have been seeking out an opportunity to visit the distillery ever since I stumbled (ha!) upon the Widow Jane Rye at the Williamsburg Hotel bar. Finally had the chance this week and I was not disappointed. The tour was awesome an well worth the trip. The whisky and chocolate is exceptional and our tour guide was educated and enthusiastic. I also went to the anniversary party like the other reviewers here, and it was a total quagmire. I showed up about 20 minutes after 7 when the event started, but people must have been lining up for a long time. The street in front was closed off and was already full of people just hanging around. The distillery had a huge line that was already 2-3 blocks long. Nobody was working the event outside the distillery doors as I walked around trying to figure out what was happening. There were only bouncers outside, I asked one of them if I would even get in at this point and he said "I have no idea, they just told me to stand here." The crowd in front was a mix of people that just went to the cash bar instead of attending the party (tasting, bbq, etc inside the distillery) and people like me, milling around not knowing exactly what was happening. They had a live band playing, but the line snaked past the stage so you could only listen if you were in that spot in the line. There were lots of grumbles in the crowd about how poorly handled the event was, and I can tell you that from reading the description I certainly was not expecting this. It was more like a club opening than a celebration/fan appreciation event. I've been to Widow Jane before for a tasting, honestly I don't remember what I thought about it and now it's much more colored by my experience trying to come to this event. I visited the Widow Jane Distillery and also took a tour of the chocolate distillery next door. My family was visiting from Sweden and we wanted to give them an unforgettable experience. This place def exceeded our expectations! The employees were extremely accommodating being that we were one hour late for the scheduled tour. We were offered free drinks at the bar and waited for the next tour. Everyone in my party had an excellent time! The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, the tour itself a real adventure and the samples of liquor provided were more than generous! All the employees we encountered were professional and friendly. The atmosphere at the bar was great. I went on the factory/distillery tour this past Saturday and I had a wonderful time. We had Adam as a guide, who shared much information about how they make their chocolate and whiskey. You get to taste 4 types of chocolate and their whiskey and rum. I took a large group for my boyfriend's birthday and they were more than accommodating to fit a few extras into the group. They also gave us a hot toddy to drink, as we walked on our tour (it was chilly outside). I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in whiskey or chocolate! I read the other reviews and then decided to take the tour myself at $20 PP. The tour lasts one hour and includes a tour of the Cacao Prieto chocolate making and the Widow Jane distillery. The two companies are located under one roof of a very unique old commercial building. The chocolate tour was very interesting and we tasted 4 samples of this very fine chocolate. The distillery is located in only in one room but produces very unique (and not cheap) bottles of Bourbon and rum. The tasting consisted of 5 different bottles but as with most tastings the portions are small. The tour guides were excellent and I personally liked the experience very much. read more

I have had nothing but great experiences in all facets of Widow Jane in Brooklyn! The whiskey is one of the best I have ever tasted, the chocolate is delicious and compliments the whiskey greatly. I did a tour and learning about the products at Widow Jane were inspiring. I sometimes stop by the Botanical bar after wrk and the staff is really friendly and make exceptional drinks!
