Widow Jane Distillery delivered exactly what a bourbon hunter hopes for when a distillery visit lines up with travel. As someone who always looks for a distillery stop when paths cross, Widow Jane did not disappoint. The space has a great industrial, Brooklyn-cool vibe, from the tables to the shelving to the bar itself. It feels intentional, hip, and still very much focused on the whiskey. What I really appreciated was the flexibility of the experience. You can order cocktails, flights, and even single or double pours, which made it easy for our group to explore the lineup in different ways. We ordered different flights across the table so we could sample broadly, and that approach paid off. They also offer a small but thoughtful selection of food items, perfect for pairing with tastings and taking the edge off while you explore the lineup. Nothing heavy, but exactly what you want when you are spending time with good whiskey. Two pours really stood out. The 10-year distillery-only release was excellent and worth the visit on its own, and the Black Opul 20 Year was something special. On the nose it leaned heavy into mature oak with some dark chocolate and dried fruit, and once you sipped it you got caramel, toasted nuts, a little leather, and a finish that just kept hanging around in the best way. It is one of those pours that makes you slow down and really appreciate what is in the glass. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff knowledgeable, and the experience approachable without being dumbed down. A great stop for both casual fans and serious bourbon drinkers alike. Widow Jane is a great distillery located in Red Hook Brooklyn. I took a tour and tasting last week and it was interesting. You don't think that NYC would have a top notch bourbon distiller but they do with Widow Jane. I took a tour last week while visiting and had a good time. Ryan,the tour guide, is also an employee in the distillery. He was informative and the story behind how Widow Jane started was fascinating. They are now affiliated with Heaven Hill which gives them national exposure and distribution in all fifty states. I came here because one I was in town and two a neighbor gave me a bottle of WJ bourbon as a gift a couple of months ago and I really like it. I had no idea they were in Red Hook and he told me that they are in Brooklyn. Anyway, I stayed after the tour and had a couple of cocktails at the bar. The Sazerac and Old Fashioned were top notch. Definitely pay Widow Jane a visit if you happen to be in Red Hook. read more

Not sure how many folks do the tours, but the gentleman that did ours, can't remember his name but he did say that he was fairly new and from the "beer world"... Either way, the dude has clearly taken notes! It's a cool little experience. I wish I would've chosen a time when y'all were mid-process (which I think would be my only suggestion when it comes to booking online, etc... Respect to the employees of WJ for their hard work and production of an amazing product. We had the opportunity to take a tour of WJ distillery and were very pleased with our visit. Emma, our tour guide, was great! She was very knowledgeable, friendly, and took pride in making our visit special. After learning about the nuances/challenges of operating the distillery in the City, a new level of respect toward the bourbon, which I was already a huge fan of, and the 20 employees who make the company emerged. To start the tour we had a taste of an aged cocktail called Barrel Kicker, which was delicious. At the conclusion of the tour we sampled several of their bourbons. Overall favorites are the 10 year anniversary, Decadence, and the Rye! The chocolate bourbon truffle at the end really hit the spot! Unfortunately the cocktail bar attached to the Distillery wasn't open when we visited, but this gives us an excuse to return in the future! read more

What an awesome time we had!!!! First of all, I had to reschedule the tour a few times, and they were extremely accommodating and very nice about it! So that was extremely appreciated! We were able to even switch tours at the last minute due to traffic and Emma was super great about it! She also very very knowledgeable and informative as our tour guide! Duuuuude...so I fell in like with Widow Jane bourbon not too long ago...allow me to pontificate. What had happened was that about three months ago (from the writing of this 5 star review btw) I was at a local liquor spot purchasing a bottle to add to the collection, when I was being helped by a well-versed shop attendant who, while in conversation, recommended the 10 year...I was intrigued. Then, I decided to try their lucky 13 and it was then I realized I was more than "In Like". While having the recent opportunity to visit the great NYC again, I knew my trip would not be complete if I didn't partake in a tour of this magnificent craft distillery. I'll fast forward to say it did not disappoint. Learning about its history and having a tasting was sublime. Our hostess, Emma, was great. And we had an opportunity to do a full tasting in their bar next door. That's where I had the opportunity to try the Vault 15 year - outstanding, and I was ecstatic that I got to pick up a bottle of their 2021 batch - which will live in my collection unopened until just the right occasion. Overall - Widow Jane impressed me all the way from Orlando, FL.; And learning how they work their craft to produce such a high quality bourbon has been amazing. If you're a bourbon aficionado and you haven't tried this phenomenal libation..well you just haven't lived and perhaps your right to vote should be revoked. Keep, keeping it real WJ. I'll be back. We have done may distillery tours and tastings. This was as good as any we have done. Super friendly and knowledgeable guide. The tasting really showcased some terrific products. Nothing beat being handed a taste of a great Manhattan when we arrived. Building and bart have a great vibe. Thankfully open on a hot Saturday afternoon to get away from the sun. No outdoor seating to speak of, and only a few tables inside, but there was availability for the two of us. Concise menu of both tastings as well as full-on cocktails. Had to get the Flagship Flight ($15) - three 1oz. offerings of their popular whiskeys. Was hoping that each drink would be discernable from the other and was not disappointed. Strong smoky flavor in one, while smooth and refreshing in another. Didn't want to get inebriated, so also ordered a Labne & Harissa w/ Pita Chips ($12). Thick chips served alongside an equally substantial dip with chickpeas inside. Good flavor and easy to eat, though not the optimal pairing for a whiskey flight. Again, the place isn't very large, so it's easy to get the waiters attention here. This is probably my fav distillery tour I have ever been on and I have been on my fair share! But, what really set this one apart from any of the others is that you not only get a great tour and tasting of the distillery and Widow Jane bourbon, but it includes a a tasting and behind the scenes tour of where the Dominican Criollo cacao for Prieto Cacao is processed and handmade! First off, the repurposed bldg that the Distillery/Cacao factory and the attached 20th century bar are in are just gorgeous! When you pay the $20 for the tour and tasting, it includes a whiskey sour cocktail (that you can bring with you on the tour!) from their little cocktail bar Botanica next door. Secondly, the history of how the distillery and chocolate factory came to be and the namesake of the Widow Jane bourbon is fantastic! Who doesn't love a great origin story? Thirdly, Adam our tour guide and Pia our tasting guide were absolutely awesome! I really enjoyed Pia's enthusiasm about the different Widow Janes, especially the ones only available at the Distillery. They even created their own hybrid corn for their Baby Jane blend! If you ever find yourself in Red Hook, Brooklyn or are just in NYC, this place is worth a visit! Whiskey and organic Dominican cacao were made for each other and this tour is time and money well spent! They also have an open enclosed courtyard where they have free-roaming chickens! I was introduced to Widow Jane a few years ago by my nephew . I was excited when I found that the Distillery offers tours and we took him there as a birthday celebration . The Ambiance of the bar was very chill. We enjoyed it pre-tour and had to go back after as well . The staff was very friendly and the drinks were amazing ! The tour was very informative and the woman presenting was very bubbly and fun to be with . We all had a wonderful time. I am a HUGE fan of whiskey and making the trek out to Widow Jane from Manhattan was so worth it! I attended the Widow Jane 6 Year Anniversary party last month and was able to get the full experience. The distillery is located in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, which is about a 20-30 minute via car from Midtown. I was able to enjoy their tasting room, along with their actual bar side of the distillery. Both were as equally as nice, but very different. The bar side of the distillery offers low lighting with a small bar and a number of tables. The bar was very intimate and falls into the category of the typical speakeasy Brooklyn bar. The tasting room was well lit and very whimsical. I really enjoyed the outside garden area the most. It reminded me of a scene straight out of The Enchanted Garden. At the party, I was provided with a nip of their 8 year bourbon and a Widow Jane keepsake glass. I was also able to enjoy samples of the different ages and varieties of bourbon they offer, it was great! I would highly recommend anyone to visit the distillery if they were in the area. Absolutely loved our experience with Widow Jane. True craft whiskey (and I'm a whiskey snob). Our guide Will (a major asset to the distillery, can you say V-in-training?) was so engaging and knowledgeable and explained the unique features that make this whiskey truly craft. Not only have they made blending into an art form, but the limestone water they use is exceptional and sourced from special mines in upstate NY (the same limestone used for the base of the statue of liberty!). Their tasting notes and profiles are top notch and they represent NY craft beautifully. Can't wait to come back again soon with my other whiskey snob friends--seriously Widow Jane even does events, yes please! No one who visits this place will ever be disappointed. read more

Our tour guide was so amazing and took the time to chat with us and answer all of our questions. She took us through the process and history and it made me respect them fully. The $20 hour tour switches seamlessly between chocolate and bourbon manufacture, touching on conching (grinding) cacao liquor, tempering molten chocolate, mashing corn wheat & barley, distilling, barrel aging and (of course!) tasting the products. The engineer in me loved the ancient chocolate-bar-wrapping machine, but alas no golden tickets lol. All chocolate is 72% cacao and kosher (milk never included), sampling flavors included straight, vanilla & cassia (cinnamon), Dominican spice, coffee & sea salt plus a bonus holiday peppermint. Some bourbons for sale in 2017 were made elsewhere and aged across the street (sorry no warehouse stop on the tour) including the yummy & pricey 10-year-old Widow Jane, $70 for a fifth, 91 proof. Other whiskeys and the sole rum are distilled in their gleaming huge fractional distillation still. Our tastings included 4 (rather small) pours of old and new such as whiskeys made with heirloom corn plus an unaged rum. The (gorgeous!) facilities are only a few years old. The downstairs production kitchen is temp controlled but the main floor is totally unconditioned, no a/c in the summer and no heat in the winter. That meant our tasting was done with very cold whiskeys, and all tour people standing in full winter gear, neither the most conducive to enjoying all the interesting flavors. Some BKLN distilleries will knock the tour price off a bottle purchase but here, nada. read more

Was at the distillery last night for the tour. I'm a HUGE fan of this bourbon. So I got both of my brother in laws hooked on it as well. They got us tickets for the tour. It's awesome to see this smaller distillery growing. I have watched it as they weren't we'll know and hard to find in stores. To Now selling in more stores, states, and after the tour being told other countries. The tour was ok. The guide was good. The operation is small and one of our guides said due to their growth they may have to move. We tried their 10 year old bourbon, and two rye whiskey at the end. All are very good. We also tried their version of moonshine Baby Jane. It is smooth for a moonshine. It also has a strong flavor of corn. What a great product. If you like whiskey and haven't had Widow Jane. Go get some and try the tour. Widow Jane is hands down my favorite bourbon. read more

My friend and I happily found this exquisite place was open not realizing it is open Friday thru Sunday only. We made our own flight of bourbons and asked the waiter to line them up according to strength and flavor. All of the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! We had a great time savoring our 4 selections and deciding our favorite. Botanica is a beautiful place especially when the floor to ceiling windows are open and it is lit perfectly at night! Really enjoyed this tour! It's a great activity, really cool to hear about the specific and deliberate ways they make / flavor their whiskeys. I was really impressed by the unique steps in the Widow Jane whiskey process (specifically for their Baby Jane whiskey!). You get to see their warehouse with all of the whiskey barrels too!
