Well, I made the right choice and thank you to each individual who recommended the location. When I arrived, I checked out the tap list and was blown away by the offerings they had. And in addition, looking around and eavesdropping on some conversations I realized that I was surrounded by fellow beer nerds. I got a few different pours, including one of my favorite Canadian breweries (Messorem really needs to get some beer down to Minnesota). The energy was incredible--definitely the kind of local spot where people come to relax and hang out like it's their second home. The drinks were fantastic, and I loved that they offered such a wide variety. They even had regular hot tea if you wanted something non-alcoholic, plus a whole range of other NA options. As someone who always looks for a distillery stop when paths cross, Widow Jane did not disappoint. The space has a great industrial, Brooklyn-cool vibe, from the tables to the shelving to the bar itself. It feels intentional, hip, and still very much focused on the whiskey. What I really appreciated was the flexibility of the experience. You can order cocktails, flights, and even single or double pours, which made it easy for our group to explore the lineup in different ways. We ordered different flights across the table so we could sample broadly, and that approach paid off. They also offer a small but thoughtful selection of food items, perfect for pairing with tastings and taking the edge off while you explore the lineup. Nothing heavy, but exactly what you want when you are spending time with good whiskey. Two pours really stood out. The 10-year distillery-only release was excellent and worth the visit on its own, and the Black Opul 20 Year was something special. On the nose it leaned heavy into mature oak with some dark chocolate and dried fruit, and once you sipped it you got caramel, toasted nuts, a little leather, and a finish that just kept hanging around in the best way. It is one of those pours that makes you slow down and really appreciate what is in the glass. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff knowledgeable, and the experience approachable without being dumbed down. A great stop for both casual fans and serious bourbon drinkers alike. Glad we made the stop, and I would absolutely return.

Ryan,the tour guide, is also an employee in the distillery. He was informative and the story behind how Widow Jane started was fascinating. They are now affiliated with Heaven Hill which gives them national exposure and distribution in all fifty states. I came here because one I was in town and two a neighbor gave me a bottle of WJ bourbon as a gift a couple of months ago and I really like it. I had no idea they were in Red Hook and he told me that they are in Brooklyn. Anyway, I stayed after the tour and had a couple of cocktails at the bar. The Sazerac and Old Fashioned were top notch. Definitely pay Widow Jane a visit if you happen to be in Red Hook.

So when I heard this place in Park Slope had a full bar without a drop of alcohol in it, I got very excited. So back on May 2nd, early afternoon, my wife and I popped in and had a few cocktails while we did the Saturday crossword puzzle. We adored it! Great kinda art deco-ish vibe, very "detective noir." The bartender was excited and talked a lot about the products available. We spent roughly $60 or $70 and had a fantastic time. Today, Saturday August 8th, we thought we'd do the same thing since we were in the neighborhood. It was almost as if we experienced two different restaurants. My wife needed to use the restroom, so she did that first and sat down at the bar. Immediately, the person behind the bar told me "We aren't doing drinks, just food." I was then told that cocktails don't start until 4pm (which is wild, because it was around 1pm when we were there back in May!). I wasn't offered a list of drinks that were available, just told "No drinks." The bartender then added "Everything we have is zero proof," as if I was going to be upset about that. Of course I already knew this -- that's why I was there! The whole experience was extremely unwelcoming. At that point my wife came back and was looking over the brunch menu. I had wanted to leave, but she decided on a hibiscus tea... which it took her about five minutes to order, because we couldn't find anyone to take our order in spite of there being three front-of-house employees and only four patrons in the entire place. Ultimately I had a club soda (which was $4 for 7 ounces!) and we did the crossword and left. So we spent about $15 total, instead of the $60 we spent back in May -- and which we were planning to spend today on two rounds of NA cocktails. I worked service industry for a long time (over a decade), and the vibe I get from this place is that no one in management has done the service industry time that it takes to know how to run a place like this well. It has that feel of top-down lack of experience. It's a shame, really, because this place has so much potential and there's not really anything like it in the neighborhood. But as it is, they are basically just walking away from all the money we'd gladly spend there if the place made any sense or did a good job of being, y'know... a bar and restaurant. One note: I'm attaching an image of my receipt, because I have noticed the owner likes to claim that reviews are by people who went to some other restaurant and were just confused about Mockingbird. Go to Costco, get your baguettes there, and charge less. Nobody will know the difference.
