Denning's has been a part of the Beacon scene for years. Over time, the quality of the stuff coming off their stills has improved measurably - the Beacon Bourbon is, in fact, pretty righteous and there is usually a turquoise-topped bottle of the stuff front and center on my home bar. A real bourbon aficianado friend of mine from out of town, after tasting it, looked at me shocked and wanted to know where the heck it came from!!! Also, the Friday Happy Hour at Denning's is a real treat. The prices are very, very Happy Hour-esque and even if you hang for a while after you're not going to get murdered like you would other places in town. Alana (their amazing bartender) mixes great drinks, all featuring Denning's booze. Amy, the hostess (who mans the tasting room) is as welcoming and nice as they come. The room has its charms! It is a distillery, not a super high style bar though. So set your expectations accordingly. But I am a big fan and you will find me here with regularity as I roam the streets of town. We came in on a beautiful Saturday and got thrown out within seconds because they "don't allow dogs". The perfect stop after a walk around town! The cocktails are handcrafted and delicious, the bartender was great and gave me a few tips about the liquor I was interested in buying! So praise to the bartender!! At first the lady in the tasting room was kind of rude, maybe she was busy with a group or something but didn't like how she didn't invite people in. The place was empty at one point and would have been nice to have a welcoming face when come in into the Tasting room. Later on I wanted to purchase something and taste some of the liquor which she offered very nicely! I think is important for them to show that the tasting IS NOT FREE, you get 3 shots of your choice for $5 (which is a pretty's reasonable price in my opinion) if you buy something the tasting is free tho. Went here on Sunday afternoon. Did two tastings. Cool vibe but the interior was a bit strange. Just a bunch of random tables and chairs. Everyone was nice. We started with the tastings in the front. I believe the bartender's name was Amy. She was very nice and told us about the drinks. She served my girlfriend and I the following: Small batch Cask strength Rock & Rye Honey infused vodka Traditional vodka Gin Very good price at $5 for 3 (1/4 oz) pours. That said, I like to think I have a pretty good palette for food and drinks. I did not really love any of these. My favorites were the rock & rye and gin. Amy mentioned that you can call ahead and reserve the space. They do parties for up to 40 people I think, without deposit or minimum spend. You can bring in your own food since they don't serve food there. We were going to get a cocktail, but given we didn't love the tasting, we elected to pass. I heard about this distillery and wanted to try the local bourbon. During a stroll through Beacon, we decided to stop by. As soon as we walked through the door, we were welcomed by the staff (they were super friendly). They offered a sampling in the tasting room, but I decided to try the Old Fashioned and was not disappointed, I even bought a bottle of bourbon to go. We only visited for a tasting so can't speak to the bar, but looked like a chill vibe on an early Saturday evening. As for the tasting, it was in a smaller room in the front and we were the only 2 there that evening. The woman behind the counter was initially a little standoffish but became much more helpful after we sat down, walking us through the selections they were offering (3 choices for $5). My boyfriend and I started with the tasting when you enter, and it was such a fun and cool experience to try. I don't particularly drink bourbon but I was able to take sips and learn a bit more about what I was drinking from the informative and friendly bartender serving us. They have cool merch inside the tasting area and I even got a sticker! We then went to get cocktails in the main room and I loved the earl grey lemonade cocktail the most. "Small" cocktails were $9 but it was plenty for the size and reasonably priced IMO. Cool ambiance, and great drinks. Would return on a next visit to Beacon, cheers! read more

Went on the tour Sunday found it very informative. Did the tasting bar and bought the cask strength. Now that I have had the opportunity to pour it to my liking, 2 cube let it breathe for about 5 minutes.....wow the flavors explode! This distillery is a hidden gem! Really though, it's practically hidden and can easily be missed. Be sure to look for them when you're walking on the Main Street strip. The inside appears to be an old car garage, it's kind of cool! There are some touches they left over. It has a really cool vibe and it's pretty spacious too! The bartender in the tasting room took money from my husband to pay for our drinks and our friends drinks. Then one of our friends didn't know we paid for them and paid for our drinks. Then the last friend also didn't know we paid so they also paid for our drinks. Basically they got paid triple for the same order and didn't say anything. After talking we all figured out we all paid. Had to get a credit but it was kind of a mess to get it straightened out. How could they not know we all paid. The bar service was excellent. LOVE that this place is open, even during COVID. They are following full safety protocol and have "zones" for different things - Tastings - Cocktails - Seating. Limited capacity, and social-distanced. The staff is very friendly and helpful and answered all the crazy questions I asked them about their offerings. Perhaps because we came by the end of the day on a Saturday, our experience at DPD did not strike us as particularly warm or unique. Most of the space was being used for a live band performance, which was unique and drew a crowd, but one of the set-up was right in front of the bathroom door, making for super awkward situations for other patrons who needed to use the bathroom. There must be a better set-up. As for the tasting, it took place in a tiny room. It was very cutely decorated and pays deep homage to distillery life. There were three other people in the room by the time we arrived, but throughout our time there, it ranged from just the two of us to about 10, including people waiting outside the tasting room. The guy running the tastings was definitely distracted. He assumed the two of us wanted just 1 tasting of 3, and he didn't tell us much about any of our options. He also accidentally gave my husband 2 of the same kind, but at that point, we were eager to leave and did not complain about it. Lastly, as someone who drinks a bit of bourbon and whiskey, I did not love any of them. There's one with honey that was unique, but it didn't really cross my mind to buy a whole bottle, and I love supporting local businesses. Anyway, I'll chalk this up to it being an "off" Saturday, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to recommend this stop to others. read more

So long story short - I was supposed to go hiking a weekend ago with this couple. It started to rain on our drive up north in the grand state of New York. One of us (not me) in the car deemed it too dangerous to do this hiking expedition. I didn't realize until I was halfway to Woodstock that we were going to be scaling actual rocks. So you can sense my oncoming jubilation after this turned into where can we go to drink instead of committing to this? My friend's girlfriend was in the mood for a distillery as opposed to a winery and this was one of the closest spots to where we ended up getting derailed in our travels. Oh, Beacon. Such a quaint little town. It's like the hipster Brooklyn version of upstate New York. Where rich Brooklyn-ite kids grow up to live the rest of their dreams and open up little art studios or distilleries. . . . . I liked this place quite a bit though. We went in for the $5 tasting - choice of 3 different spirits to sip in a shot sized portion. I went with the Viskill Vodka, Beacon Bourbon, and the Maid of the Meadow. Personal favorite was the Maid of the Meadow - it tastes like honey vodka. Great for sipping on its own, not sure how it would go with cocktails. The vodka was distilled inside of coconut shells. Something very different and unique. Had a bit of a burn to it but a nice sweet lingering aftertaste. The bourbon I liked right in the middle - also an award winner of best spirit in the Hudson Valley area. Nice cinnamon, dark fruits, maple, and vanilla notes going on. Inside of the distillery there was a little bar area and $7 cocktails using their spirits. Not a bad deal. I went with the Shenanigans: Great 9 Gin, Organic Blueberry Jam, soda water. Really pleasantly surprised with this one. They managed to strain that jam out so that you really barely tasted anything muddled up inside. More gin, nice balance. A refreshing and great cocktail. I also tried my friend's Firefly made with gin and grapefruit soda and it was pretty good as well. They seemed to be having a taping for a hulu show while we were visiting so I got a kick out of watching that and had some kind of after party. Definitely a stop worth checking out if you're in the Hudson Valley area and are thirsty for libations. read more

Happened to discover this place while exploring Beacon and I'm glad I did! We stopped by later in the day for a tasting and a couple of cocktails. Now I'm not going to lie, the spirits here are good but not great. The cocktails they make here are really good, though. They really know how to use their own liquor. They offer tastings for $5. You get to try three, and if you decide to buy a bottle, the $5 gets discounted off the price, making the tasting essentially free. Beacon is a great town. I'll definitely come back to Denning's Point next time I'm in the area. read more

Made a quick stop into Denning's Point Distillery on Friday afternoon. A fun place to try out some different spirits and then see how they work in a cocktail you may mix at home. Quality: Following our usual strategy we came into Denning's Point Distillery ready to try everything they had to offer. With two Tastings we got a bit of Viskill Vodka, Great 9 Gin, Beacon Apple Brandy, Beacon Bourbon, Beacon Bourbon Single Barrel, and Maid Of The Meadow. While I'm not a great judge of spirits on their own, the Beacon Bourbon was by far my favorite of the bunch. We then switched gears and ordered two cocktails. I went with Stun Gun, with bourbon, jalapeno syrup, peach iced tea, and bitters, while my girlfriend selected Bees Knees with gin, honey syrup, lemon juice, and club soda. Two outstanding cocktails, which showed off the strengths of their products. Quantity: Tastings come with three small pours of the different liquors, two Tastings will let you try all of their products. Cocktails come in small and large, either way expect a drink with a kick. Value: $5 for a Tasting. $7 for a Small 9oz Cocktail. Ambiance: Denning's Point Distillery is located in the small town of Beacon in Upstate New York. Found in an old garage, the space is fairly small, but still big enough to house a small bar for tastings, a small bar for cocktails, and then a seating area defined by several barrels. As you sip, you are surrounded by the equipment, which seems to enhance the experience. Arriving as they opened they asked if we had a preference in music, but we deferred back to them and they settled on classic rock, always a good choice. Crowd: Arrived when the doors opened, and within minutes several other couples wandered in. Likely never a huge crowd, but always a few folks enjoying stiff drinks. Service: Passionate and knowledgable staff, they give almost too much information on their products during the tastings. But it is a huge testament to the product, when you have an employee rattling off all the different cocktails and cooking techniques they use the different liquors for. The tours are informal but very interesting and they go great with a cocktail and free popcorn. Our tour guide was funny and very knowledgeable about the equipment and distillation process. Such a cool place that felt so random! Stopped here on a whim and certainly had more fun that I thought I would! The staff was so friendly and easy to talk to, not to mention, extremely knowledgeable about their product. All the cocktails are very tasty and reasonably priced to boot. The early grey drink was easily my favorite. I also stuck around for the brief distillery tour and it was a true treat. The owner had a great dry humor, was very knowledgeable, and cares so much about a quality product using only local ingredients. Blindly walking around quiet Main Street Saturday evening and heard some music coming off from the side. Turned the corner and saw that this distillery had a live band performing in it and a bar to the left serving out some strong cocktails. Not sure if this is the tap room or just making use of the unused space when working hours are over. Either way the drinks sold here are from the distillery and they don't disappoint. Ordered the Maple Leaf ($7) - a maple flavored bourbon that hits smooth. To go along with the drink and the show, free popcorn at your leisure. What's not to love? Couldn't stay too long, though will remember for sure to get some of that bourbon to bring back home next time. read more

We stumbled upon Denning's Point Distillery after unsuccessfully trying to visit the Hudson Valley Brewery. A very cute sandwich board pointed us down the street and promised $7 cocktails, which is a steal, so we had to check it out. The Distillery is small but welcoming, and everyone we interacted with was friendly. To the right of the entrance is a small tasting room, with $5 tastings which includes three samples. I tired the bourbon, the brandy, and the Maid of the Meadow vodka. The bourbon and brandy were very smooth. We liked the vodka so much we got a bottle of it to take back to Brooklyn! After enjoying the tasting, we got a cocktail (made with the liquor the distillery makes) and enjoyed some conversation as well as watching visitors' dogs sniff around. I recently organized a mini field trip for some friends and I to take a trip upstate to visit Denning's Point. I had tried the American Whiskey at a birthday party and asked, "What is this? It's really good." And BAM. That's when I was bitten by the Denning's Point bug. Denning's Point Distillery is located upstate in Beacon, NY. For those coming in from the city, I highly recommend meeting at Grand Central around 10 or so, and hopping on a train together. It'll take around 90 minutes to 2 hours to get to Beacon, and a round trip fare will cost you somewhere around $30ish on the weekends. Once you get out of the Metro North stop, I recommend walking about 10 minutes to Beacon Bread for a little brunch. The OJ there is fresh squeezed and ridiculously good. Plus, you need to hydrate for all the booze you're about to try when you get to Denning's Point. After Beacon Bread, it's just about a 5-10 minute walk to Denning's Point. They do tours on the hour and Karl, who is one of the owners, is really all about answering all the questions you have while taking you around. The place is small, but it's incredible what they produce. They make the most of the space. On the weekends, there's live music. Check the website for a schedule. The tastings are $5 for three, or free if you purchase a bottle. As a whiskey drinker, I was already a fan of the American, but I was especially anxious to try the Maid of the Meadow, which is infused with herbs. HOWEVER, little did I know that my true love would be the Number 9 Gin. I'm normally not fond of gin, but holy herbs, this was incredible. It's super fragrant, and the nose on it was unlike anything I've ever tried. I immediately took home a bottle, and have yet to try mixing it, but I think that it'll go incredibly well with just about anything. I intend to pair it with apple cider this winter (don't knock it til you've tried it), as well as with a squeeze of lime juice over ice. Highly recommend the trip up to DP. I went during the summer months, but can imagine it makes a cozy place to be in the winter. read more

Chalk up another reason to visit the Hudson Valley, and Beacon in particular: Denning's Point Distillery. The distillery itself is as basic as can be. It occupies a former garage and is purely functional. The equipment is state of the art though. The distiller is a scientist in disguise. Don't expect anything more than an education in how whisky, vodka and gin are made. The above mentioned proprietor/distiller is passionate about the quality of his spirits, and you'll appreciate the results of his labor when you go to the tasting room and sample the whiskies, vodkas and gin. I'm a wine drinker who only imbibes hard stuff in a cocktail--usually mixed with simple syrup and some citrus. Denning's Point spirits are so good, I drink them straight. Everything is made from New York State grains and in the case of the superb Maid of the Meadow Vodka, herbs as well. No need for reservations for tours and tastings. The bottles and labels are beautiful as well--if those things matter to you. Perhaps the best part of visiting the distillery, other than discovering wonderful beverages, is that you can explore the emerging culinary gems in town as well as DIABeacon museum. If you're in Manhattan, take Metro North. It's a pretty ride and takes less than 90 minutes. read more
