Highly recommend Kings County Distillery for a fun and fancy cocktail and/or a fantastic distillery tour and sampling. If you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of their working cats in the warehouse. For $20, a tour includes the animated history of Kings County, the process of distlling, and a healthy sampling of 4-6 spirits. The cocktail bar is fun, historic, beautiful, and chic. The menu is varied, with something for everyone. I had an espresso martini that was incredibly smooth and delicious. Bathrooms are down a historic, metal spiral staircase, so if accessiblity or mobility area a consideration, I would call ahead to ensure existence of appropriate accommodations. Tour: 4.5/5 Ethan (I think I'm remembering that right) was amazing! He's clearly super knowledgeable about the distilling process. The only reason I'm docking half a point is that it was hard to hear him at times--a mic would've helped. Bonus points for the two cats roaming around! Definitely a memorable touch. Tasting: 5/5 As a whiskey lover, I really appreciated the flight and the dropper of water to help bring out each flavor. My favorite was the blended whiskey, while the peated and coffee-infused ones weren't quite my style--but still impressive, especially since peated whiskey is rare around here! I had a great time on the Kings County Distillery Tour. It was a Christmas present and I had a blast. The bar and the distillery are in the Brooklyn Navy Yard at the end of Sands Street. The bar is historic and beautiful and the distillery is a short walk away. The tour guide (she was wonderful and I'm sorry I forgot her name) gave an enjoyable rundown on the area, the distillery process and prohibition. I'm a history nerd so I heard much of it before, but it was presented so well that it was a pleasure to hear it again. The sampling tray was fun with a mix of ryes, bourbons, and flavored bourbons. There was a peety flavored bourbon that sounded awful but tasted fine. It had a mild, bourbon / Laphroaig, thing going on; and there was a coffee infused bourbon that sounded good - but wasn't. (At least to me.) I'm not a fan of mixed drinks so, perhaps it would have been perfect in a cocktail but, neat, I wasn't fond of it at all. read more

I really wanted to love this place. I had been a kings county bourbon fan since they bottled Brooklyn Bakery bourbon under the Last Lantern label. Visiting their tasting room in a historic area sounded like a journey that needed to happen. When I arrived I thought the place was really cool. Located in a gate house this place oozed with history. Despite this the vibe was something that I didn't love. It wasn't anything in particular but it seemed really elitist and hipsterish. They did offer flights and I tried some and while the bourbon was definitely good, it did not garner the hefty pieces demanded of most of their bottles. Plus with only one person tending bar, it took nearly 20 minutes to have a pour of whiskey. I loved the architecture, liked the bourbon, but felt like the vibe didn't suit me... Really enjoyed our impromptu stop in here. We were walking to downtown Brooklyn but decided to pop in for a drink. First, the interior is beautiful. It's somewhat rustic, distressed brick walls and just enough decor. The bathroom is my favorite, pristine with candles and dimly lit. There's so much attention to detail here and it's lovely. It was a beautiful day and we almost never pass up an opportunity to sit in a garden but the tiny nook was too cute not to sit in, so we sat inside. But on to the reason we came--the drinks. I decided to do a cocktail because I felt what better space to have a whiskey beverage than the distillery. Had the penicillin which is one of my favorites. It was good but just a bit too light on the whiskey. I ended up adding some of my partner's bourbon trio to give it the kick it was missing. Next time, we'll plan a visit around the tour schedule. Booked a Sunday tour. As I waited for my tour to begin I was told that two of my choices to sip near were not available. Strike 1, how do you go out of stock at your flagship? Strike 2, the bartender wasn't busy and was also not engaging. When you run a place like this and people are there for a tour there's an experience to curate. Not so much. Just a 20 something who thinks they're above it all. Strike 3: I booked the shorter tour because I had a flight to carch. Apparently the shorter tour means you get the less energized, less knowledgeable tour guide. Maybe he was hung over, I'm not sure but in all an underwhelming tour in an underwhelming facility. The cat was cute but probably shouldn't have a cat waltzing around a production facility. He spent a quarter of the tour literally herding the cat. Another quarter checking the time. We couldn't make it in time for our reservation at Rooftop Reds so came here instead! I had heard they were doing whiskey tastings for $35 in their outdoor tasting room which I think is a great activity, but they were fully booked so we just enjoyed drinks in their outdoor garden! There was only one person working both the cash register and the bar -- felt so bad she was the only one on a busy Saturday but she did a great job. You have to get chips with every drink but it's only $1, and they are soooo delicious. I ordered the Penicilin cocktail (lemon, ginger, honey, bourbon) which was very refreshing. There's a good amount of picnic tables available and you can bring your dog as well. There is no indoor seating but there is a restroom indoors you can use. Keep in mind the restroom is not super accessible. Upon entering the building, you sanitize your hands (the restroom is also only one person at a time), and walk down a very small and steep winding staircase to get to the restroom. read more

We were in the Brooklyn Navy Yard for the Stranger Things Experience and stopped by Kings County Distillery on a whim. Kings County Distillery is the oldest distillery in NYC and we were hoping to go on a tour of the distillery, but it was closed. This was strange because the website was still showing available time slots. Thankfully we didn't purchase tickets ahead of time (FYI: tickets for the tour are $20/person and lasts 45 mins). I would suggest calling the distillery and confirming before making reservations just in case. For some reason, the door to the distillery wasn't closed, and we met a nice staff member who happened to be working. He directed us to the Gatehouses tasting room (not in the same building but only a short walk from the distillery), a cool, little historic building with outdoor seating. At the tasting room, we ordered some cocktails and Kings County Distillery whiskeys and ended up staying for a while. The cocktails were incredibly well crafted and delicious. Highly recommended to anyone who is in the area and looking for a cool place to hang out and enjoy delicious drinks. read more

I'm sure due to COVID-19 things are quite different then they usually are. There was an outside picnic like area with regulated seating distancing. One female who appeared to run the show at the window where you can order. A few drinks on the special menu. Penicillin with Peated Bourbon, Lemons, Honey and Ginger. Moonshine with Strawberry and Mint, Old fashioned Bourbon. I chose the Penicillin as it was most appealing to me. It was super tart and tangy due to the lemons and a perfect amount of sweet from the honey with a light smokey undertone from the process of peating the bourbon. It was delicious as I am keen to tart/sour tastes. Moonshine was a bit rough for my taste. If you like a Vodka undertone with a light candied strawberry taste of sorts, go for it! My sister and her friend liked it. I preferred the Penicillin. They are sold in 100ml and 200ml bottles with prices varying from $10-16. Tip:: the $10 is one small cup and the $16 pours two cups on ice of course. All in all I would definitely troop all the way back to the BK Navy Yard to visit again in normal times. We went to Brooklyn and did a tour/tasting at Kings County Distillery. For starters - the building/bar area is amazing. It's turrets and the feeling of the interior are really cool. Walking back in time. We did the tour with Liam. He had all the expected stories. The building holding the actual distillery for the tour was also pretty great. Lots of history tied to the Naval Shipyard. As a bonus, the Distiller was in the room and answered some questions and gave some background. We saw the distillery equipment - the full process is in 1 room, and also saw one of their barrel rooms. The tasting was ok - they had prepared little tastes of a few of their different drinks - Moonshine, Bourbon, Whiskey & Rye. Don't worry about driving home afterward - in totality, it's probably a shot of booze. Overall was a fun experience. read more

This is a fun little day trip outside of Manhattan, especially if you have some shopping to combine it with at Wegman's. I'm not sure that it's necessarily worth a trip from far away, but between the tour and the (very cool) bar, it makes for a great Sunday activity. Located in the Navy Yards, the Kings County Distillery bar is positioned near the front of the parking lot behind a nondescript door. Cocktails run around $12-$14 and, of course, feature the whiskey and bourbon that are distilled on premises. I had a hot toddy before my tour and thought it was excellent. The bar itself is a great date spot - low lighting, intimate rustic feel, lots of seating. Tours are $16, which is a little steep imo (most brewery tours that I've done are either free or offered at a nominal cost), although it does include a tasting. The tour itself is less interesting than the ~30 minute or so historical lesson that's given at the beginning. If I had found history that interesting in high school I may have walked away with more than a 2 on my APUSH exam, but alas. Tour guides were great and very funny. At the end, you taste 4 whiskeys. Two are preselected, and for the other two you're given a choice. My favorite was the infused spiced whiskey. Truthfully, the whiskeys themselves were the only disappointment; granted, I'm sure I don't have a great palate, but I would have rather had Bulleit over any of those that I tasted and it's far cheaper. All in all, definitely worth a visit. GREAT idea for a first date. Probably will not return. read more

Not widely visited yet in IMO but that will soon change with Wegmans opening. The bus is the closet public transportation but it might be more convenient to get a ride share or bicycle. Keeping a lot of the elements of the building's original architecture gives it an industrial feel yet welcoming once you're settled inside. There's a nice outdoor area for the warmer days. Demetrius, the head bartender, is a master of his craft and mixes up some great drinks along with friendly service. Nov 2021- Initially our group planned to get some drinks at Harriet's Rooftop in the Brooklyn 1 hotel but found out there's a minimum spend per person of like $100+ so we ended up walking "just a few blocks" (those "few blocks" for a New Yorker differs from what the rest of us view as a short walk) and ended up here. I loved that it used to be an old ship yard guard tower and now serves some great whiskey drinks. They have their local selections and you can order from your phone. We opted to eat outside and though it was chilly it was nice out with the lights and everything. There's not really food here so we ordered some fried chicken and fries and had it delivered. I love that they allow you to order food elsewhere. We all ordered a variety of drinks and samplers and seriously all of them were amazing. Customer service was satisfactory considering the only interaction we had with the workers was showing our Vaccine cards when we entered and grabbing our drinks at the bar when they were ready. I'd like to come back here again next time I visit NYC and maybe even sign up for one of their tours I've read about. read more

Wow... just wow. I think they do tours, but if you're a bourbon/malt/whiskey/whisky fan, their spirits are a must try. Came on a very hot afternoon just after lunch and participated in a tasting of three I paid for, and one that is not officially "on the list" to give out, but I had a connection. That's all the detail you're getting on that! The tasting room is unbelievably cool, in a building that looks like an old castle, is built out of what I believe to be old limestone and native rocks, and is said to be built in the 1850s. It looks like it, and it's just the coolest place to have a taste, or you can sit outside in the shade at some of their picnic tables and do the same. A friend of mine in the UK has had them on a virtual tasting session, and I've had several of their bottles shipped to Kansas. Some for myself, some for friends who reacted similarly. First-rate bourbon deserves to be considered some of the best in the country. Yes, I said that. And yes, it really is in Brooklyn. Most definitely worth a visit and some time sampling their 1 oz. pours, but be warned, I'd suggest if you're going to get 3 or more of those you might want to have Uber or Lyft ready to pick you up because it's a decent hike back to the subway sober, which you won't be after you're here. I've come in a couple of times with Good Passports (drink coupons) over the past two years. Usually by myself which is ironic because this place is dark and moody and romantic. Very rustic with little flower vases on tables and mood lighting. The whiskey is really great too. But usually the drink through the passport I'm given is made with their own moonshine. The drink I tried last time I went in was the Moonshine Punch and it was delicious and super potent. It's confusing getting here. But just think - it's in that main building right by the entrance gates to the navy yard. You don't have to go much further with getting lost. They do whiskey tours here! Which is next on my list of things to do with coming back because I have yet to try their chocolate whiskey. Tours are $14 Tuesdays-Sundays at 3pm and 5pm and include a tasting and last 45 minutes to an hour. So it sounds pretty worth it. read more

I first came across Kings County Distillery at the Grand Army Plaza farmers marker in Brooklyn. I love that they produce local quality products for a great price. My fiance loves whiskey, so I did some research and found that Kings County Distillery does gift sets. I opted to get the set of 3 whiskey bottles, which came with a nice wooden box set. The location of the distillery is a bit out of the way, but it's definitely worth it. They offer tours and tastings throughout the week. The bar itself is small and cozy, with a rustic homey feeling. Visiting Kings County Distillery was my first foray into the Navy Yard area, so that alone was a pretty neat place to visit in ol' Brooklyn. The distillery itself is really nice and unique and uses metal, peeling paint, and vines very purposefully - even though it's meant to look natural and organic. The spot is very chill with an attention to detail. The cocktail menu has some classics as well as unique concoctions - and they are boozy. Perfect winter activity for many types of occasions: date night, day drinking with friends, private events, etc. Came here with a friend over the break and I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. The tour includes a history lesson on alcohol and specifically bourbon, which was much appreciated in terms of both getting context for the tour and general education on the topics, so I can sound like I know what I'm talking about in social settings. We then went down to the distillery itself, where we saw how the bourbon was made step-by-step. Finally, the tour includes a tasting at the end, where you can taste several different kinds of bourbon they create there with an option to bring some home if you'd like. I did the whiskey tasting it was a great experience the host really knew her stuff. She was nice and helpful the whiskey was really good even as a beginner I could taste and smell the different with the help of the host. The bar and tasting room are amazing it's like being in a Castle the drinks at the bar are all really good and the bartenders were really nice. My only complaint is I wish the whiskey tasting was done with a tasting glass but the way they do it is really nice looking. We were looking to pass the time in Brooklyn and decided to sign up for a tour and tasting. We paid $14 and spent an hour with our own personal tour guide (since no one else signed up for that time) and learned a lot! We started off in the Boozeum, where he gave us a rundown of the history of whiskey in the New York City area and why exactly they can be the oldest distillery at only six years old. From there, we headed to where the magic happens and got a firsthand look at the distillation process. It's definitely a small batch operation. Next, we went to the barrel room to get some insight on the aging process until finally, it was time for the tasting! We sampled about six different whiskeys including their flagship, seasonal, chocolate, and moonshine. We couldn't leave without buying a bottle. They have a cocktail bar near the gate entrance, as well. We tried to stop in, but it was all rented out for a private party so we couldn't hang out which was kind of a bummer.
