Meeting with the makers of Fort Hamilton Rye Whiskey (the couple of the far left and right)

This is our 4th tour with Dom the owner and guide of Made in Brooklyn Tours, and it was like meeting up with an old friend again, a friend who knows the Brooklyn neighborhoods inside and out. For this one, we went on the Industry City tour and visited four very different businesses and got a great taste, both literally and figuratively, of the history and diversity of activity in the area. They included a chocolate company, whiskey maker, stained glass restorer and soap maker. What most impresses us about these tours is the deep pride and love that Dom has for Brooklyn and for those who are being creative, working hard and sacrificing to succeed in making it there. Always highly recommended!

Side note, I am pretty sure it's free for solo people, but if you go with a large enough group, they have a $5 fee per person, which is reasonable. In general, I would recommend coming here in the fall, not just because the weather will be nicer, but also because the trees are beautiful, and winter is nice as well, due to the frozen lake, among other things. The spring is nice as well, but there are better places to see leaves in bloom, as there are more wintery shrubs here. The area is massive, and you could honestly spend many hours going to various corners. There are highlights such as a well-known view of the Statue of Liberty, many sculptures, and graves for people ranging from Samuel Morse to Boss Tweed to Leonard Bernstein to Louis Comfort Tiffany to Henry Chadwick, among others, along with many people from various wars, of course, such as the civil war with one particularly interesting grave having a confederate and union soldier next to each other for reasons. The place is particularly well-maintained compared to other cemeteries I have been to, with the entrance being striking among other things.

We returned the following day and was able to walk the grounds. It appears to be a frequent tourist location to see graves of famous NYers were are buried on the compound. Can't speak on the service and value as I went for an event.

Starting our trip with Mayer and his tour was the perfect way to begin. It gave me the foundation of where we visiting to build off of the rest of the trip (it made along for the ride turn into a start to my own personal journey). Mayer is an open book and answered all questions no matter how basic. He made everyone on our tour feel comfortable and you can just tell by the way he explains everything that he really enjoys what he does! I have recommended this tour to all of my friends of all different walks of life!

We saw the Levi Yotzchok Library (wow), the scribe and a whole wall of Torah's to be examined- writing of the blessing for the mezuzah, a Mikvah with a very beautiful description of the purpose and meaning, and of course the the world famous 770 synagogue which is the headquarters Chabad- lubavitch movement. It was something to see! The Lubavitcher Library was filled with priceless artifacts of all the Rebbes including Baal Shim Tov. Our guid was a Rabbi and not only talked about the sites but about Judaism and Chassidism philosophy. I can't recommend this tour enough - and so inexpensive! I can't wait to come back and do it again!

Nothing about the neighbourhood being cool or artistic. Maybe 5 mins total was spent talking about artists that performed here. Making a tour 100% about that when it's completely mismatched with the description is false advertising. ONE graffiti art spot. Not much sense preaching to tourists about unaffordable housing for 2 hours.

Between 83rd and 86th St, intersected with 11th through 13th, the Dyker Heights neighborhood are really fun to walk around and admire the lights and take photos. I came with a small cavapoo, and I was happy to help other people (mainly families) take photos in exchange for them helping me take photos with my dog. There were certain spots where there was just a bottleneck of people, and it was impossible to get through with my dog without picking him up and carrying him through the crowd. There were trucks giving out Annie's Pretzels and coffee and hot chocolate. I didn't partake in any of the food trucks, but a lot of people are really inconsiderate and leave trash on people's private properties. C'mon people, these are actual homes, do you want people treating your homes this way? A super fun walk during the Christmas holidays!

The epicenter is a mile walk from the D or R trains, but the bus service from the R along 86th seems simpler. Be sure your phone is charged; you'll find an incredible assortment of photo and video opportunities. The multi-Santa Spata House at 1152 84th St. is perhaps the most famous. Some of the locals are annoyed about the traffic. No spoilers but further west on 84th there's what might be an amusing quiet protest about this event. Consider the lack of bathrooms before downing any hot chocolate or apple cider. In one post-lights trip I went to the great Chris's Polish restaurant in Bensonhurst; I reckon open-at-night options are more prevalent in Bay Ridge.
