My girlfriend and I absolutely loved the Chassidic Walking Tour. It is one thing to learn about…read moreChassidic culture through books or movies, but nothing is better than experiencing it first-hand. These people are so dedicated to their faith and families. We have much respect for the Chassidic community. Everyone that we met was so warm and friendly. I was invited to wear tefillin at the main synagogue. I've never seen anyone do that at my temple, so I was unfamiliar with the practice. They were nice enough to let me use a set and they talked me through the blessings. I have since ordered my own set of tefillin from Israel and I am excited to use them. The falafel sandwich that I had for lunch was the best one I've ever had. My girlfriend said she hadn't had one that good since her Birthright Israel trip. The Chabad movement and the other Chassidic Jews are truly keeping Judaism alive, and I must tip my yarmulke to them. ;)

Can you imagine a tour that can change your life? Well this tour can. Bar none, the best tour I…read morehave ever taken! Rabbi Beryl shared some information that changed my life. He "brings home" why some of the Jewish observances are so important. The tour gave so many of our observances MEANING. I learned so much! It's a great tour, seeing the scribes, the mikvah, and the matzoh factory -- but the heart and soul of the tour is Rabbi Beryl and his unique way of teaching. He makes everyone feel welcome and part of the tour -- not just an observer. I can't image anyone, Jewish or otherwise, not learning so much about the heart of Jewish New York from this tour. Enjoy, it may change your life -- It did mine!

I came…read moreto Crown Heights with basically no knowledge of the history of Chabad or the Rebbe and why Crown Heights is such a special place. I was "just along for the ride". Starting our trip with Mayer and his tour was the perfect way to begin. It gave me the foundation of where we visiting to build off of the rest of the trip (it made along for the ride turn into a start to my own personal journey). Mayer is an open book and answered all questions no matter how basic. He made everyone on our tour feel comfortable and you can just tell by the way he explains everything that he really enjoys what he does! I have recommended this tour to all of my friends of all different walks of life!

If…read moreyour interested in Chassidism, The Rebbe, Judaism or the Lubavitch this walking tour shows you the behind the scenes of it all. We saw the Levi Yotzchok Library (wow), the scribe and a whole wall of Torah's to be examined- writing of the blessing for the mezuzah, a Mikvah with a very beautiful description of the purpose and meaning, and of course the the world famous 770 synagogue which is the headquarters Chabad- lubavitch movement. It was something to see! The Lubavitcher Library was filled with priceless artifacts of all the Rebbes including Baal Shim Tov. Our guid was a Rabbi and not only talked about the sites but about Judaism and Chassidism philosophy. I can't recommend this tour enough - and so inexpensive! I can't wait to come back and do it again!

I'm going to try to entice you and not spoil the experience because it is thoughtfully curated and should be experienced live, in person. We started with one of the inspirations for Ghostbusters! Right off the bat, I was hooked as I love that movie and anything Dan Aykroyd. We learned about a Secret cave in Central Park, the iconic Dakota Building, we passed by Needle Park, where "Waiting for Mr Goodbar" was filmed in 1977 (RIP Diane Keaton!), and saw, among other sites, where James Baldwin lived and discussed art and films, like "The Exorcist" with Toni Morrison. That was a fascinating film review to read and learn about! You finish the tour where Edgar Allan Poe wrote and first published one of the most famous poems ever written, "The Raven", in The New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. I had no idea I lived so near to such fascinating history! I'm grateful to B.O.T.D. for being such cool teachers! I am very much looking forward to taking additional tours with you to continue this unique journey of my complex and beloved City.

Side note, I am pretty sure it's free for solo people, but if you go with a large enough group, they have a $5 fee per person, which is reasonable. In general, I would recommend coming here in the fall, not just because the weather will be nicer, but also because the trees are beautiful, and winter is nice as well, due to the frozen lake, among other things. The spring is nice as well, but there are better places to see leaves in bloom, as there are more wintery shrubs here. The area is massive, and you could honestly spend many hours going to various corners. There are highlights such as a well-known view of the Statue of Liberty, many sculptures, and graves for people ranging from Samuel Morse to Boss Tweed to Leonard Bernstein to Louis Comfort Tiffany to Henry Chadwick, among others, along with many people from various wars, of course, such as the civil war with one particularly interesting grave having a confederate and union soldier next to each other for reasons. The place is particularly well-maintained compared to other cemeteries I have been to, with the entrance being striking among other things.
