This is by far the worst public swimming experience I've had either indoors or outdoors in NYC's network of pools. Granted, it was a brutal high-nineties day when I headed over at three-something. First, I saw a cheery mural welcoming me to Kosciusko Pool, followed by high iron fencing and desolation beyond. I wondered if the pool had shut down, but my question was answered when I saw a line of inner city humanity pushed up against a concrete wall, trying desperately to avoid the heat in a one-foot-wide strip of shadow provided by the structure overhead. Everyone expected pool cleaning to be from 3 to 4 p.m., but what they did not expect is for the afternoon re-opening to be delayed for about 45 minutes with no real explanation as to why, let alone an apology. A gaggle of cops stood across the line, just sizzling in their dark uniforms, talking amongst themselves, offering no answers, and avoiding eye contact with the common people. A little girl asked me why I wasn't standing right up against the wall. She seemed really concerned about this. Confused, I found a kind way to tell her it was all right, and that I could stand the way I wanted to stand. Soon, I was to find out that I was wrong. NYC Parks staff members started walking down the eternal line, shouting about having locks, caps, and swimming diapers for babies, and telling us to get up against the wall. As if by reflex, the crowd flattened against the wall, leaving no space between sweating bodies in the sweltering heat. The little girl's sweet little face was in my shwetty back, and my chest was creepily pressed up against the mildewy towel draped over the shoulders of a pre-adolescent boy. As the delay passed the half hour mark, people finally reverted to survival mode, deploying certain members of the family to purchase water. Others just complained, voices escalating with anger. I asked if this type of delay was a frequent occurence. "It's ALWAYS like this," a young girl bellowed. When I finally reached the holy grail that was the ramp leading down to the basement locker rooms, I was pretty much frisked by two park attendants and perhaps a cop. Like a quarterback getting on the field, I ran through a tunnel. The tunnel was creepy, dirty in the corners, and had that cheesy reek of old chlorine mixed with miscellaneous filth.. The lockers were similarly dank and dirty. I finally reached the 200x100 foot pool and stopped dead in my tracks because I realized it was the only option, other than the somewhat elevated, obscured kiddie pool off in the distance which I knew would be even more stagnant than what I saw in front of me. Everywhere, bodies brawled in the water, completely keyed up in their relief from the heat. Even from a distance, the water was visibly tainted. I almost chickened out. This is unlike me. I scolded myself and stalked over to a remote corner and stepped in. Wearing goggles may have saved my eyes, but was a poor course of action for other reasons. As I breaststroked tentatively through the throngs of kids, I saw with great clarity the clots of phlegm, tangles of hair, dirt, and brown looking streaks moving through the uniformly brown-green water. I gagged, and of course took in a nice mouthful of the concoction. Unable to stop the thoughts of fecal matter, excretions, and dead skin cells that were undeniably and visibly present in the water, I jumped out in about five minutes, throwing up a little in my mouth. I showered until my skin stopped itching, threw my dress over my head, then ran out the way I'd run in, not even bothering to towel off since it was so hot outside. Some of the same people I'd seen in line were still standing there, looking quite hopeless as thunderclouds now threatened the horizon yet refused to provide respite from the heat. A row of barricades blocked me from exiting. Keeping calm, I asked how to get out. Too lazy to speak, staff member merely pointed straight at the barricades, so I lifted it up myself and barged through, relishing its angry screech against the pavement. I left it open and kept running past the cops, past the mural, and down to the subway. To literally wash myself of the experience, I made the trip to McCarren. Though I also had to wait there for about thirty minutes (it was just that hot of a day that all pools were at capacity), the experience confirmed by comparison that not all pools are created equal. But people are, and I wish I could go back and tell all those literally and figuratively poor kids back in the K-line that they have alternatives. My goal is to support the park pools. And I have a ton of respect for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. But quite frankly, this facility is the failed state of city pools, and I'm not sure one can blame it on security issues of overpopulation. I'd urge the curious to stay away from this pool, especially on hot days, and make some space to those who are trapped by circumstance or by location into resorting to it.

I loved this pool, will definitely be back

I stayed a member for so long because it's a convenient walk from my house, but I recently left here to join the Life Time and I couldn't be happier. Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly from my experience. The good: The pool. You really cannot get this anywhere else in/around Park Slope. That said, it is often crowded, with 4+ swimmers per lane, and the swim lane etiquette is not the best. They have lanes divided by speed - low, low/medium, medium, and fast - but basically I've found there is one fast lane, and all of the rest are slow. It feels like the fast-lane users are either former Olympic / Masters level swimmers, so I have to be in this awful position where I'm getting passed all the time in the fast lane, yet people get angry with me for going too fast in the other lanes. That's just my experience though. The bad: The free weight room. Basically, everything is overcrowded, and the etiquette is horrible. The free weight room has ONE power rack, which is insane for such a large gym. This is compounded by the hoards of teenagers that camp at the gym during peak time, sometimes leading to long queues to use any of the equipment. And the etiquette is some of the worst I have seen. People leave weights lying around on the floor or haphazardly put plates back wherever they feel, leading to a ton of clutter and general chaos. There is usually an attendant in the free weight room, yet they do absolutely nothing. Generally, the staff sucks. They do not greet you and just generally seem disinterested except when they are talking amongst themselves. The ugly: The locker rooms are just horrendous. Everything is filthy with dust everywhere. The lockers are super outdated, busted and rusting all over. There are often cockroaches in the dry sauna. But the worst is the showers. I think that was the final straw for me. It genuinely feels like a prison shower in that half the shower curtains are missing, and I even saw a bunch of blood on one of them. The ceiling is covered in mold; they don't even bother to paint over it. I don't need much, but I at least expect a clean and pest-free locker room. The state of it is shameful honestly. There is also no towel service, which is insane for how much you pay. Meanwhile, Harbor Fitness has towels, and the membership there is $76/month. All of this would be fine out of a low-cost, no-frills gym, but the cost of the regular individual membership is $96 per month, which is just out of line. The value is practically non-existent. They will also try to scam you when you try to cancel, saying there is a 15-day notice period, despite that being against the law in NYS. Bottom line, do yourself a favor and don't join this gym.

My kids (5yo) are comfortable swimming freestyle and backstroke after 4 months (2 session-16 classes)and I can see their progress. Before joining I tried to teach them myself for few month without success, but they were comfortable to be in the water when they started. -Teacher: I can't thank enough to the wonderful teachers there. I am kind of parent that result means a lot, I like the teachers pushing the kids to do their best, challenging themselves to do more, yet keeping them safe & interested. All the teacher there are look out for the kids best interest. Carlos and Adrian C has been my kids teacher for the 2 sessions that we've been there and my kids love them, always wanting to come to class and most importantly, they learned how to swim!! Overall is a well run program that I am happy my kids are there.

I spent most of my life avoiding the deep end like it was filled with sharks. Water and I were not on speaking terms. Honestly, I would've preferred two back-to-back dentist appointments over a single swim class. Enter Swim Easy New York -- aka the miracle workers: Krystoff, Evelyn, and Isabela. These three absolute legends took an adult who used to treat puddles like potential death traps and taught me not just the basics, but how to tread water, how to stay calm without feeling the bottom, and -- wait for it -- how to jump off the edge of the pool into the deep end. Let me say that again: I JUMPED INTO THE DEEP END. On purpose. For someone who spent a lifetime cautiously stepping away from the edge and praying never to fall in, that moment was nothing short of a mental breakthrough. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears... but I did it. And YEYYY ME. What sets Swim Easy apart isn't just the amazing instructors -- though they are truly amazing. Krystoff is basically the James Bond of swim teachers: calm, cool, and in total control. Evelyn is like your personal hype squad with the patience of a saint, and Isabela radiates so much warmth and encouragement that you feel like an Olympian just for showing up. But the structure of the program is what really makes it stand out. Unlike most places where you're locked into one class a week, Swim Easy lets you take as many classes as you want. I personally went with two a week to help reinforce what I was learning. It made a huge difference. They also offer a variety of time slots, including classes starting as late as 5 PM, until 7.15 pm which is perfect if you work a 9-to-5. And the best part? It's super affordable, especially for the level of personal attention and support you get -- and the caliber of instructors you're learning from. I've laughed, panicked a little, swallowed enough pool water to qualify as a human sponge -- but I've learned to swim. And more than that, I actually enjoy being in the water now. That's something I never thought I'd say in this lifetime. If you've been putting it off, telling yourself it's too scary or too late -- please, just go to one class. That's all it takes to see how different this place is. They'll teach you, encourage you, and help you do things you never imagined you could. They changed my life. I think they'll change yours too.

I've been to so many places with beautiful pools and the ocean, and I guess I just pretended that I was okay while everyone was enjoying themselves, but I was not. I committed that I needed to learn how to swim to overcome my fears. I researched the web and watched many YouTube videos when I found SwimEasyNY. I first hesitated to call, putting it off for several weeks until I just said I needed to make the call. SwimEasyNY provides group classes and private lessons. For myself, I wanted private lessons since I prefer one-on-one training programs. Krzysztof (Miracle Worker, Training Coach Extraordinaire) scheduled me for our first session the next day after my call. Of course, I was terrified, but, Krzysztof immediately left me at ease when we met and started our session. First was breathing techniques at the sallow end, while Krzysztof provided constant reinforcement and some good laughs, which helped tremendously! I never felt unsafe or judged by anyone on Krzysztof's team; they're all WONDERFUL and create a great positive atmosphere for everyone--there is no judgment. After my 4th session, I was heading to the deep end, again, with Krzysztof's positive training techniques, and use of a board for assistance, which is something I would never have done before in my life. Krzysztof always provided positive reinforcement to show that water is not your enemy but something to enjoy. Today, August 5, 2022, was my 6th session when something clicked, like riding a bike; I started treading water without assistance or holding onto the side of the pool. I'm saying this because I wasn't thinking about it while talking to Krzysztof until we both realized I was doing this without any instruction. I then swan the entire pool length without a board and swam the whole distance again on my back. Onto more great sessions. Just AMAZING, INCREDIBLE! THANK YOU, Krzysztof, and the team at SwimEasyNY; you're all Awesome!

First of all, as these swim classes took place in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, we've been very happy with all the safety precautions: - Classes were limited to 2 students, recently expanded to 3. - Only one parent/guardian and the child are allowed in the building at any time. - The parent/guardian and the child are allowed in the building only 5 minutes before class. - They check temperatures for all. The pool is heated, it is clean, and there are two bathrooms/changing rooms, each one with 6 lockers and one shower. They clean the changing areas in between classes. The instructors are great, and the 30-minute classes we took are intense[1]. Even though the exercises and routines were essentially the same, a lot depends on the energy of the teacher. I feel that the more energetic teachers are actually the more effective. There are a few things to consider: - The pool is not very big. It is certainly large enough for the 3 students plus 3 parents/guardians in the current class, but things could get crowded at full capacity. Also considering that each changing room has only one shower. - There is no priority enrollment for students who are currently enrolled in a class. Once the mass email for new enrollment is sent out, spots are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis. Basically you only have a few minutes to register your kid. - There is no phone number to call. For anything you need, you have to send an email. The person in charge is nice and will reply, usually within a couple of days, and often within a few hours. However, if you need information quickly, thins is a problem. -------------------- [1] This was the Sea Otters level: 1 year/10 months to 2 yrs/10 months.
