It is hard to understand why because there are usually a bunch of attendants sitting around in the front at 11am but they never open the entrance gate til around 11:15/11:20am. Sometimes they have to wait for the police attendant to come. Once they do open, it is pretty fast to get inside. They look to make sure you have a lock. They require you to rinse off before going into the pool. On the deck, they don't allow you to wear anything besides a bathing suit or a white tee and flip flops. Not supposed to bring food, books or cell phone out.

The staff makes sure to harass you as much as they can, you aren't allowed to have fun, they have a problem with everything, no running, no jumping, no holding on to each other while swimming, phones must be in the locker and cannot be used in the pool deck. The kiddie pool was closed on this day I visited because someone shit in it. I actually read in the news that they closed the entire pool the week before on one of the hottest days of the summer because someone shit in it. Google it if you don't believe me. The atmosphere has definitely improved, but not worth coming here again since the staff likes to make sure that they manage every little detail and impose each and every rule upon you. You really can't have fun at this pool, everything is a problem, literally my 4 year old daughter was holding on to me while swimming, they said "No holding on to each other while swimming." This place has potential but as long as it's ran by the NYC Parks and recreation it will always be a toilet.

The workers are clear when you get there. Bring a lock, wear a swimsuit including swim top for males wanting to wear any type of tshirt or a white plain tshirt. Clear directions when you get there but the website needs to be more clear. It reads like suggestions rather than mandates. Not against the rules because there needs to be order but just make sure that the website clarifies the rules as requirements. Pool is in great condition, very clean, respectful workers who were kind enough to let me give my kids their towels before I went back to my car to wait for them. I only got one pic. Lots of parking if you get there timely. In my waiting, they closed to capacity based on the number of lifeguard to swimmer ratio. Well run.

I stayed a member for so long because it's a convenient walk from my house, but I recently left here to join the Life Time and I couldn't be happier. Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly from my experience. The good: The pool. You really cannot get this anywhere else in/around Park Slope. That said, it is often crowded, with 4+ swimmers per lane, and the swim lane etiquette is not the best. They have lanes divided by speed - low, low/medium, medium, and fast - but basically I've found there is one fast lane, and all of the rest are slow. It feels like the fast-lane users are either former Olympic / Masters level swimmers, so I have to be in this awful position where I'm getting passed all the time in the fast lane, yet people get angry with me for going too fast in the other lanes. That's just my experience though. The bad: The free weight room. Basically, everything is overcrowded, and the etiquette is horrible. The free weight room has ONE power rack, which is insane for such a large gym. This is compounded by the hoards of teenagers that camp at the gym during peak time, sometimes leading to long queues to use any of the equipment. And the etiquette is some of the worst I have seen. People leave weights lying around on the floor or haphazardly put plates back wherever they feel, leading to a ton of clutter and general chaos. There is usually an attendant in the free weight room, yet they do absolutely nothing. Generally, the staff sucks. They do not greet you and just generally seem disinterested except when they are talking amongst themselves. The ugly: The locker rooms are just horrendous. Everything is filthy with dust everywhere. The lockers are super outdated, busted and rusting all over. There are often cockroaches in the dry sauna. But the worst is the showers. I think that was the final straw for me. It genuinely feels like a prison shower in that half the shower curtains are missing, and I even saw a bunch of blood on one of them. The ceiling is covered in mold; they don't even bother to paint over it. I don't need much, but I at least expect a clean and pest-free locker room. The state of it is shameful honestly. There is also no towel service, which is insane for how much you pay. Meanwhile, Harbor Fitness has towels, and the membership there is $76/month. All of this would be fine out of a low-cost, no-frills gym, but the cost of the regular individual membership is $96 per month, which is just out of line. The value is practically non-existent. They will also try to scam you when you try to cancel, saying there is a 15-day notice period, despite that being against the law in NYS. Bottom line, do yourself a favor and don't join this gym.

However, I can still find a way to work on my core , arms and legs. The gym has not been crowded which I like. There is a pool a steam room and a sauna. The exercise equipment room seems to be well equipped with several machines and weights. The staff is friendly. The gym overlooks the hudson so exercising is made easier due to the view, the pool has a top that opens when the weather is warm. There is an outdoor patio and a very large indoor lounge room. The hours are: Weekdays 6:30am-10:30 and 4:30-9:00pm weekends 9:30-6pm

The Downtown Brooklyn location has the BEST group of yoga instructors in NYC! I take an early evening hot yoga class Sunday through Friday. The gym also has great weight lifting and boxing classes. All the staff members are amazing, and the gym is very clean. I used to be a member of Equinox and LifeTime and I would definitely recommend Chelsea Piers Fitness over them.

The trainers don't reply in a timely manner and wait until 1 hour before a scheduled session to cancel on you. The design of the space is not good. Classes take place in the middle of the gym. Sauna does not get hot enough for any health benefits to actually kick in. You can hear the music from floor in the sauna. Not a relaxing experience at all. The equipment is fine. There are no leg machines but there are an insane amount of upper body machines.

The pier itself juts about 300' or so out into Buttermilk Channel. It offers nice views of the bay, the Statue of Liberty, New Jersey and lower Manhattan. When I was there last week after visiting a local distillery there were many people out enjoying the nice weather on a Saturday afternoon. A group of dogs were frolicking in the waters off the small beach. Would I swim there, ah probably not. Red Hook was a heavily industrialized area and had an active shipping terminal not too long ago. However the waters in the Hudson Bay are much cleaner than forty years ago. Maybe a dip ankle deep.
