It fact, "It was used by the Continental Army in 1776 as a lookout point, which at that time offered strategic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New York harbor, a portion of New Jersey, Staten Island, and Long Island"[1]. Mount Prospect Park has something to offer for everyone: - If you have a dog, this is a dog-friendly park, with many dogs enjoying the large grassy area at the center. Keep in mind that the area is completely open. There are specific off-leash hours, and I found all dog owners who come to the park to be friendly and respectful. - If you like to run, there is a running route that goes all around the park, mainly shaded by wonderful tree, that covers 0.22 miles/0.36 km[2]. There are also some stairs that lead to the highest point in the park, that are also good for exercising. Another set of (steeper) stairs is near the second access point near the Brooklyn Public Library. - If you have young kids, there is a playground with two jungle gyms separated by a sprinklers area, plus an enclosed area with swings, and six concrete small tables with benches. There are a lot of mosquitoes, particularly tiger mosquitoes i.e. the ones that are active during the day, in the area near the benches around the fence. The main entrance by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has no stairs, and its gentle incline is perfect if you have a stroller or bike. - If you have older kids, I have seen soccer games and other team sports (baseball, freesbee, etc...) or training sessions take place in the lawn at the center of the park. Keep in mind that the area is not completely covered in grass, and it can get dusty. The park seems to be generally understaffed (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The trash cans are not emptied daily, and the hours at which sprinklers are on during the summer, or when restrooms are open, seem to be totally random. While I find the dog owners and runners very respectful, some of the people who have birthday parties or other celebrations here tend to leave a lot of trash behind. Underwood Park is classified as a playground, so it was closed during all of the pandemic…read morelockdowns, even though there was a lot of space for social distancing in the non-playground parts. The unique part of the park are the natural spaces with dirt, rocks, plants, grass, and trees which are important for children who mostly don't have backyards and might have never seen a backyard. Unfortunately, these have been locked up with chains and locks, even the grassy area where families and groups used to host sing-alongs and birthday parties. I know there's a neighborhood group that likes to plant flowers in two of the spaces, but there has to be a better way to balance the needs of children to play in natural areas and the flowers. For the past several months, there's been a wasp nest hanging from a tree, and for several months they used to put yellow caution tape around the benches with the wasp nest, but people keep taking down the tape and sitting 6 feet away from the wasp nest. They haven't taken down the wasp nest although we've reported it, and they haven't been putting up the yellow caution tape.

I've been to this park twice for birthday parties (yes, the city allows for people to purchase…read morepermits) and everytime it was a success! The park isn't huge, but it's a great place for families to hang out. There's some water spouts in the middle of the park, slides, swings and other playground apparatus for kids. There's a few sections of the park that can be used for private parties as well. From what I've heard, it only cost $25 to rent a section of the park for 5 hours, which is undoubtedly an awesome deal.

Check-in and check-out are very fast and efficient. Once you've created an account on their website, you simply provide your phone number at check-in and again at check-out, and that's it. You can use the credit card on file or choose a different payment method. The only thing that wasn't very clear was how the lockers work. You need to bring your own lock if you want to secure one. We didn't have a lock, and I didn't see many lockers actually locked, but we had no issues. A quick explanation at arrival would have been helpful. In terms of cleanliness, I actually had a very positive experience. During the two hours we were there, I saw multiple staff members actively cleaning the space several times, including common areas and play zones. That said, beads in the bead room do tend to scatter everywhere. While the space was generally clean, the loose beads can be a potential slipping or choking hazard and could benefit from closer monitoring. Outside food and drinks are allowed, which is a huge bonus compared to other indoor play spaces that require you to purchase everything from their café. The café itself is nice, spacious, and clean. High chairs are available, and there's plenty of seating for adults to relax while kids play. The bathrooms are spacious as well, though not all of them have changing tables. Overall, Space Club offers tons of engaging activities and clearly succeeds at keeping kids happy--mine had an amazing time and ran around nonstop for the full two hours we were there. I also appreciated how warm and cozy it felt on a frigid winter day. It's open seven days a week, 365 days a year, which is especially great for school closure days that fall on a Monday when many museums and other attractions are closed. We'll definitely be back.

As soon as I saw it, I snapped a picture of it and sent it via text message to a friend in my book club. She told me it's a little free library. While I was there, I saw a woman fixing up the garden. The sign outside states this greenspace is tended by volunteers. It's a cool space, I highly recommend checking it out when you are in the area.

It's nice to see what they're growing, as examples of things I don't have to pull out of my yard!
