Prospect Park is a beautiful park. It gets overshadowed by Central Park, but I think we like it that way. We're okay with gatekeeping it even though it's not really even hidden. It's gorgeous, it's spacious - no tourists, no horse rides. read more

'An urban oasis' first comes to mind when I think about our first visit to Prospect Park. The overall experience was certainly positive, with some fine points. As a visitor to the city, finding parking on a weekday afternoon was near impossible, until it became possible after what felt like 25 minutes of searching for a spot. The park is truly sprawling and there are many places to explore, including pavilions, bridges, falls, a pond, a creek, and endless paved trails. We also couldn't help but notice that the park overall may not have been maintained consistently, based on the extensive weeds in fountains, for instance. We saw at least two cafes that had pastries, sandwiches, and beverages on their menu that looked good enough to make us think we'd definitely go there if we lived locally. All in all, I'm grateful for this space being available for locals and visitors to enjoy, and hope it is maintained and stays open for many more years. read more

One of my favorite things about Brooklyn is Prospect Park. Even though it's large, as you can imagine it gets busy on the weekends. Lots of families, etc. Still, it can be an enjoyable time. I do prefer weekday visits myself. The walking/bike paths are a great way to see the park in its entirety. Plenty of green space for a picnic, playing frisbee, etc. Playground and splash pads as well. Of course, I can't forget the lake with all of the ducks splashing about. It's really a wonderful way to spend a day in Brooklyn, getting away from it all. read more

I've only been through this Brooklyn park while running in the Brooklyn Half Marathon. There are several MTA subway station that you can take to get here. I must say that the park was very beautiful during mid to late May! I definitely wouldn't mind coming back here to check out the park at a much slower pace. read more

This started as a mission to find a Hash (expat international) group meetup somewhere in this vast park, but since we didn't connect it turned out to be a "walk in the park" and pure joy. Central Park may be in a more convenient location for tourists, but Prospect Park is a divine place to explore, with plenty of twists and turns, and what the heck is that? Lots to look at! The other thing I liked was that we found free on-street parking right across the street on Ocean Avenue. Amazingly we also found parking right by Central Park as well. (This trip was a superb driving one) Even hanging out in the van, having a cold one at the parking spot was a fun experience. There's even a cafe in the middle of the park that is super nice! We were based in Manhattan but hopped on the subway all the way to Brooklyn for a little urban escape. First stop: Prospect Park. Lucky for us, there was a foodie event happening called Smorgasburg, basically a lineup of 20-30 vendors serving everything from savory bites to sweet treats. It was a rainy day, which probably kept the crowds away. Honestly? No complaints, we didn't have to wait more than a few minutes for our food, and the tables with umbrellas made it easy to stay cozy. After fueling up, we took a scenic half-mile stroll to the Boathouse. It's stunnin charming, rustic architecture surrounded by lush greenery. We sat for a while, soaking up the calm before crossing the street to explore the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Overall: 4-5 stars. Super chill, and a perfect mini-adventure outside Manhattan. As parks go, Prospect is very packed on the weekends and many families are doing their own thing and getting away from city life for a while. It's pretty large and there are various areas for kids to play on swings and even has water features to cool them off. Trails abound as well as bike paths. Surely there is something for everyone who wants to get to the outdoors and relax a while. Clean by city standards and filled with families makes the park by day seem relatively safe. Nice park in Brooklyn and the biggest. It lies in the middle of Brooklyn and has very beautiful, tall and breathtaking trees that you can sit underneath for shade and have a picnic. I used to come here with my mom and do barbecues here. You can just go deep in the park and find a nice grassy area with big trees for shade and then do your barbecue with a portable grill. There is also a lake inside the park where there's a lot of ducks that I used to feed bread. They look very cute. I still remember the time my sister fell into the lake and thankfully the lake wasn't deep where she fell into and unfortunately it was the winter time so she was freezing to death. She had to change out of everything and just freeze. This park is also good for ginkgo berry trees. They got some in this park where you can get off the floor in the fall. They always fall off but stink like crazy! My mom sometimes gets these ginkgo berries but she has to get the seed out of the berry fruit, which is the stinkiest part. Other than that, I did come here for a Lousy T-Shirt race from NYC RUNS and it was very well organized with all the tents and directions. Many directions for anyone who always gets lost easily, which is me. Thankfully they have signs or else I will be lost to death! read more

Can I tell you a little secret? I love Prospect Park more than Central Park. There's something about Prospect Park that just "stuck" with me. I loved all the wandering paths, the lake, the fall colours. Ample grass to sit and picnic (if I wanted). Perhaps it was also the fact that it was pleasantly busy but not rammed with people taking photos? Wasn't an overwhelming experience like Central Park can be. I remember during that time so many people with roommates or just lonely would come to this wonderful park. We enjoyed this park during better times and better weather. Visited this park recently for my first ever NYC Run's Brooklyn 5K Marathon. This leg of the race starts bright and early at West end of Prospect park (deserted and a bit scary early in the morning); got to meet a fellow runner whose also walking along the path of the park and felt a little less daunting. Park itself is huge and surrounds a serene pond with a few geese and ducks swimming around. Didn't realize until the race that the park's roads were a bit steep, took a lot of strength and energy for those uphill jogs/runs. Eventually reached the finished line within a good time (for a newbie); Got to take in the view of the park and enjoyed my self win. Met up with fellow Yelper Nancy as well for the race. Park also holds family friendly events throughout the year and is easily accessible for MTA as well. read more

If I had to pick my favorite thing about Prospect Park it would be the lake because the fishing keeps my husband busy during the summer months. I have ridden my bicycle many a time around that loop and have eaten many a terrace bagel on those benches near Bartel Prichard Square. Life is so happy in that park, you can hear the bandshell from several blocks outside of the park. I saw Interpol play there many years ago. In all seriousness, the bamboo Forrest on the east side is a great place to hang and the large meadow is a great place to take free yoga outside in the summer. They call it Brooklyn's backyard for a reason, there is something for everyone here even if you think there is not! read more

The park is huge! We tried to meet friends for a picnic. We found them after an hour. I usually walk the park in the morning to get exercise in. Have tried to incorporate more nature in my everyday life to gather peace and grounding. This is a nice place to visit for families and large groups. Really enjoy walking around Prospect Park on a sunny day - it's quite large, so even when it's crowded you can still find a good spot. Plenty of groups gather here to play sports or have picnics. There's a cute little "dog beach" which is fun to watch pups play in the water. Some running groups hold runs around the park which I've partaken in in the past too... some of the hills can be tough depending on the distance but a beautiful lap to run regardless! Lovely neighborhood park with grass areas for spikeball and volleyball, unlimited picnicking areas, and gorgeous views. The Prospect Park Forest is expansive enough that you can essentially walk the entire thing while staying in the shade! Not sure if this was a yelpable experience (I guess it is!) but wanted to let the world know of our pleasant summer experience here. This is brooklyn's very own central park. We came here for a picnic and were able to walk around and enjoy nature. Not only can you have picnics, there is also a designated BBQ spot. There are lots of picture worthy places and I had a good time using my instax here. This place is also very pet friendly. There's even a dog beach! Would go again for a picnic but would probably pick a grassier spot! read more

There's so much to do in this park and best of all there are many hidden gems. A water fall, many tunnels off the beaten path too. I suggest looking up map and entering from different points to explore. For instance the Flatbush side near the Zoo has a pathway and from the street a paved walkway but while walking along if you look carefully there are trails with little alcoves with very serene spaces. Walk though those and look down and there are dirt tails that lead to brooks and even more tunnels and hidden domes. Very interesting layout but only noticeable if you get off the beaten path. Explore with a friend or a small group for added safety. I particularly love this side which extends around to the meadow and back on Grand Army entrance the lovely Farmer's market. Grab some wine, fresh fruit and sandwiches from the market and head in for a few hours. It's Brooklyn's free shared backyard- priceless. read more

Prospect Park is my partner and I's go to during the warm months when it's just us and we want some R&R time. We love taking the train here and walking to the lake near the boathouse. Several times when we've done this we've even gotten to witness a few weddings! There is no shortage of shade and places to set up picnic blankets and our inflatable couch. There are public restrooms available and clear bike lanes. I do wish there was more signage in the park, but overall, we're grateful for such a beautiful space. Trash cans are also easy to find. Looking forward to visiting Prospect Park more in the upcoming weeks! read more

Prior to my start to run outdoors as a new hobby, I must admit that I never fully appreciated Prospect Park as I do now. As a novice runner, I now truly appreciate the beauty and convenience of the park for training for races or just for a leisurely run. Whether you prefer road running or trail running, there are various route options available for you to explore and enjoy. As a father of two elementary school boys, I also appreciate the various family activities available throughout the year. With additional kid-friendly programs and activities at the zoo, botanical garden, and Brooklyn Museum, there's always something going on and makes it easy to extend your visit to Prospect Park into a day trip. The park is accessible via various subway lines and buses with various protected bike lanes around its perimeter. While there are many eateries that can be found near the park, especially in Park Slope and Prospect Heights, options for getting food inside the park can be somewhat limited. On Saturdays, you do have access to one of the larger green markets in Brooklyn at Grand Army Plaza. However, on other days of the week, don't come with an empty stomach or you might find yourself waiting on line at Winner if you are in the northern part of the park. read more

Giant park right across the street from my uncles apartment. I went exploring there today and discovered so many things! Besides loads of people hanging out, getting exercise, skateboarding, walking dogs etc., there was an ice skating rink, carousel, a zoo and house that used to hold slaves. All cool and interesting! I'm sure there was more so hopefully I'll be able to see more, another day! If you haven't checked out Prospect Park, definitely go and wander around! read more

Beautiful park! We ran the Brooklyn Experience Half marathon and the race finished here. There was plenty of space for wandering about even though the cell coverage was dreadful with so many people packed in. The park is actually quite hilly, so you can have a gentle stroll on paved trails or head on gravel paths for some hiking. Not bad, Brooklyn! read more

The grass was poorly maintained and manicured, and there simply wasn't anything particularly notable about the park. WOW, what do I add about this beautiful park that already hasn't been highlighted. Growing up in Brooklyn this was our go to spot for cookouts and parties. I don't think I appreciated its beauty until I got older. I recently visited this park and walked around and enjoyed people watching. I went to Prospect Park for a picnic hang earlier this month during a quick trip to New York. One of my best friends lives in the neighborhood, and she invited me to a Saturday outing with a mutual friend I hadn't seen in years. Everyone came with kids and we all had a lovely time. I was staying in Manhattan and it was a bit of an ordeal getting here with my four-year-old (who does, thankfully, love the subway). We took a long train ride, then a cab to what I thought was the Prospect Park picnic house, but which turned out to be a random building outside of the park entrance, with another long walk to the picnic area. It was all worth it, but take note that the park is enormous, closer in purpose to Central Park than a neighborhood park with a little playground. I'd budgeted four hours for this excursion including travel time, with a work obligation on the back end, and it was tight. The picnic area was expansive and idyllic, and on the first Saturday in June, it was busy with families without feeling hectic or crowded. We (and by we, I mean my friends; I contributed nothing) brought bagels and soft drinks and sundry snack items, and sat out on blankets catching up while the kids either entertained themselves or sulked safely in view. After the picnic, my friend and I decided to walk over to the Prospect Park Zoo, also within the park, with our four-year-old sons and a huge stroller full of picnic supplies. The walk ended up taking a good hour, with various detours across dirt paths. (We may not be the best navigators.) It was a pretty walk, though, and it gave me an even better sense of the park's grandeur. The zoo was fun too, even though my kid and I had to leave after like 20 minutes. We enjoyed our adventures in Prospect Park and hope to come back. It's an amazing resource for both locals and stressed out tourists. read more

Prospect Park is a huge beautiful park in Brooklyn that is bordered by a number of neighborhoods. The major entrances are all impressive. Design was by the same man who created Central Park, but I'm told that he considered Prospect Park his crowning glory. When my son lived in Carroll Gardens we would take the F or G train to 7th Ave in Park Slope so my Grandson could go to Harmony Playground. It's a great spot for playground equipment with lots of room for kids to scoot & or learn to bike. Following the playground, it was a relatively short walk to a great dinner spot in Park Slope. I'm seeing a completely different part of Prospect Park since my son moved to Windsor Terrace. To get to the park, you only have to cross the street. Who can ask for better? There is easy access to the running trail that my son uses. Benches line the walking trail where I sit & watch my Grandson biking. There's also a short path to the lake. A bench provided easy access to watching my Grandson skip stones on the late December ice covering. The Main Entrance to the park is majestic, anchored by Grand Army Plaza & featuring the Soldiers & Sailors Arch. The area where Prospect Park was built was chosen because it played a major part in the Battle of Brooklyn during the Revolutionary War. Remains of fallen Patriots, along with fortifications & gun pits were found when the park was built. I have long wanted to be able to venture far enough into the park to see the memorials, including one commemorating a storied Maryland Regiment at the base of Lookout Hill. The history of the Battle of Brooklyn is fascinating. Thus Prospect Park holds a lure that exceeds being an integral green space in the midst of a busy city. There is something for everyone in Prospect Park, including a plethora of benches for this Grandmother & history that I long to explore. read more

Perhaps the main reason I prefer visiting Prospect Park over Central Park when I'm in NYC, is because of the lack of people pestering you as walk by with laminated sheets trying to sell you carriage rides. The last time I was in Central Park in 2019, I couldn't walk more than 5 feet near the entrance without somebody yelling at me, "Would you like 15 minute ride for $50 on beautiful horse, Sir? It's not rip-off, it's best deal in city." By the way - I'm not here to diss Central Park, since it's something every visitor should do; but stay away from the handsome carriages rides unless it's a bucket list thing. Like most things in my youth, I did not fully appreciate Prospect Park when I was a child. After a full week of school, I just wanted to sit on the couch and watch TV or hang out with my friends playing stick ball in the post office parking lot. It was also a pain having to hop onto the B Train at the 50th street station (that was pre-9/11 since only D trains service that part of BKLYN now), make a few transfers, and then after about 40-45 min get to the park. My mom worked in Manhattan's garment district (some might say it was a borderline sweat shop) sewing buttons and zippers for $.10/piece, while my dad worked way out in Long Island. Their story was not unlike many first generation immigrants, so after a week of working long hours, they wanted their kids to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, run around to get rid of the excess energy, and have a family picnic. This often meant a trip to the Prospect Park. This place is beautiful with plenty of walking paths filled with joggers, bicyclists, parents pushing strollers, and the occasional roller bladder. As an adult, I can truly appreciate the peace and serenity which comes with the greenery, which is so often devoid in the city landscapes. I especially enjoy watching the ducks and various water fowl throughout the many ponds which dot the park. Since I visited in the winter, the ice skating rink was still in operation and it was nice watching all of the families having fun. Prospect Park is probably still more of a "local" attraction since the area near the park is fairly residential. Which is likely fine for the folks who regularly visit and want to keep this place their hidden refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city. read more
