I was born and mostly raised living in Sunset Park, which I know is separate and apart from the park itself, but obviously, I look at the two as the same. There's been many changes to the park over the years from the pool, to the dungeon (the inside part of the pool, the basketball court and the play area. I would say most of the changes have been for the better, but I still do miss some of the old days. The park is huge and stretches over several blocks and has various entrances. I would say for the best views come in through the 5th Avenue entrance on either 43rd or 44th street. You can get a nice scenic view once you're in the middle of the park. I would say if you're in the neighborhood or visiting "Industry City" that you should pass through the park, if the water calls for it. read more

Sunset park, Brooklyn has been part of my life for many years. It is, truly, a melting pot with diversity of many cultures that come here. The Chinese and the Hispanic, are the major cultures that filled this park. Yes! We all get along and no one bothers one another. I saw people cooling off, sitting on many benches, under the big oak trees that lines the path from one end to the other. The children have a great time running around, chasing eachother. This park has all the aspects that a perfect park can have and it was built in mind, with its own areas, that connects together, like a jig saw puzzle. With the newly renovated playground area Sunset Park transformed into a fun oasis for the whole family. With its steep uphill climb and fuller grassland, park offers some exercise paths along with a great view of the East River. Playground is more colorful, vibrant and sturdy. Kids have more space to run around with its intricate tunnels and steps. Could use some more shaded areas for parents to sit and wait though. Park is also conveniently close to lots of food options, just a matter of what you're in the mood for. Like any public parks, safety is a concern especially at nighttime since no one is guarding the park during that time. Overall, a nice place to enjoy the day read more

Sunset Park is the namesake of the entire neighborhood. The neighborhood would not be Sunset Park without the park: tt might be named something like Very South Slope, Industry City, or just Hills. Sunset Park is small when compared to larger parks in the New York City like Central Park, but it remains a local neighborhood gem to me. If you have dog living near the park is a great way to get some exercise with a your four-legged friend. Or a great place to take a walk at lunch if you work remotely. in pre-pandemic times that was a great place to go swimming too. The views are wonderful. This a great community park, set up on a hill right off 5th Ave in Brooklyn. Clear views of the Manhattan skyline as well as a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty reward those who climb the moderate stairs in to the park. Plenty of grassy areas to lay out, with sunny or shady patches depending on your preference. I really enjoyed seeing all the families out and about with children playing, riding scooters, joggers, walkers and Tai Chi groups all enjoying the space. Great paths and a bit of incline are great for a morning walk and then later on some lazy time in the grass. I'm so lucky to enjoy Sunset Park when I visit friends in the neighborhood. As if the clean and safe park paths & grassy areas aren't enough, it also features a playground, Rec Center, public pool and super clean restrooms. It's truly awesome all around. read more

Great park. There is always people there, so it feels like you aren't alone, but not enough where it feels like there's too many. You also get an amazing view of Manhattan because the park is on a hill. Don't be fooled by how the park looks on maps; it is a big park. With multiple play sets and lots of empty grass, it is hard to not find a place to relax or enjoy yourself a little. read more

This park is basically a hill with a view. There are benches right by the entrances where you can hang out and eat and whatever, and there are trash cans, but it you want the view, go up to the top and you'll see Manhattan, Statue of Liberty, etc. There's a playground up there too! Unfortunately I don't think you can get into the park without negotiating stairs, so it's not wheelchair accessible. Yes, there are often homeless people, and I wouldn't go here by myself at night, but that's just like any park. If you're with a friend, though, it's an excellent place to enjoy the sunset. read more

I was using the women's restroom today 2/22/23 at Sunset Park's park. When I got up to pull up my pants, I saw this black woman with the hoodie staring at me from the window that was facing the last stall. The last stall had the window facing the damn toilet I was so creeped out I closed the window. When I washed my hands, I saw her staring at me AGAIN from the other window adjacent from the sink. The brick establishment is the bathroom so u see how close they are next to the bathroom window. What the heck is wrong with her, peeping at clients while they are at their most vulnerable. I couldn't get a good picture because she was smoking in one of the pictures but corporate will be notified of this unacceptable behavior. read more

Doesn't deserve a star more, that too only for the views. Although, all NYC parks are dumps but this one must be amongst the worst. And I have been in the neighborhood for a decade, the only thing improved are some renovations here and there, nothing stellar. Broken bottles and dog poop galore. Not to mention the men passed out whether in drunk state or not, on the benches, especially at the sprinklers. People' smoking weed and cigarettes around other people without a fear. Those bushes in the sprinklers are just to create a blind spot so you cannot see if your kids are playing on the other side. Lacks trees and shade and instead they installed those bushes right in the middle for random pedos to piss in or throw their trash, always smells like shit. What are these men, unaccompanied by kids doing in the sprinklers and playground anyway? There are couples making out and openly (they think they are being discreet) exhibiting their gross indecency right in the grassy areas in front of the sprinklers. read more

Like the name suggests, a perfect place to watch sunset in NYC. It's quite a trek from the nearest subway/bus stop, but accessible. There are plenty of citi bike stations in the vicinity, but watch the elevation as it makes it difficult to bike sometimes. Plenty of places to social distance with multiple benches, grassy spaces, and plenty of activity going on. You want to play basketball? Tennis? Celebrate Mexican independence day? Tai chi at sunset with the elderly Asian community? You got it. What a wonderful culturally diverse park, reminiscent of NYC as a whole, to experience and obviously watch the sunset! read more

I try to make it a point to never stop appreciating the fact that this park is my backyard. It's difficult to explain what makes it so special but it's a combination of the uninterrupted panoramic view of the harbor and Manhattan, the lush greenery, the truly wide open spaces on the west side of the hill and fact that no matter when you walk through, you'll always find lots of people having some kind of a blast. Sunset park, the name itself describes its best features, coming here to watch sunset. You can sit at the high point of the park and see the city skyline and watch the sun set. It is a big park that has lots of things to do for little kids, there is even a soccer field, and a city gym nearby. I would come here at your own risk, it is not the safest of neighborhoods, especially at night. It is a decent walk to the train station and parking may be difficult. There are plenty of Spanish restaurants nearby, I would try any one of those places if you are in the area, cheap and good food. read more

I feel in the summer there's too many people which creates a lot of litter at the park. Parks should be kept clean! It is the highest elevation and you can see Manhattan, boats going to their destinations. They have a lot of benches and open grass you can sit anywhere. I love the park. I spent the majority of my high school years walking around the park or playing basketball here. It was High school years so sometimes we would be here on a wednesday after school, mostly though saturday morning and all afternoon (playing mad fulls). Also on a Sunday, every now and then. I loved every minute of it. I have not really been there recently but NOW i can think of something to do for this summer. I remember so many times playing basketball here but once a particular day I ended up coming here without my regular sneakers because it was a last minute meetup and I didn't think I'd be playing but I got to borrow some shoes from a friend (R.I.P Fab). I put on those Red and Black Jordans and just ripped shit up on the court. My team won big coming back from behind and MY debut wear shoes from Michael Jordan I ended up 9 for 9 from the field, most of them off jumpshots. Also I blocked about 4 shots. It was an all around great day. Just one of many hoop memories in this spot. Check out this park if you are in this area of Brooklyn P.S. Whoa, a totally hidden gem in Brooklyn! I grew up fairly close to here and I never knew this existed. My boyfriend is considering moving to this neighborhood, so we decided to check out the park here. Neither of us were prepared for the stunning view of Manhattan or the lush hilliness of Sunset Park. There isn't really much to say; we walked through leisurely, ate a banh mi (from nearby Ba Xuyen) and soaked in the view. It was a weekday afternoon, so there were very few other people in the park. Everyone else there seems to live in the neighborhood - no tourists here. I suppose it isn't somewhere I'd travel to if it were out of my way, but it is a great place to eat a banh mi or hang out and enjoy a gorgeous view of Manhattan. read more

I grew up in the neighborhood, so its namesake park is immutably etched into my soul as part of the milieu that forged who I am as a human being. I have seen this park in good times and bad. Happily, the times we are seeing right now are among the good times. I was a child of the late 70s through the 80s. I went to school right across the street at PS 169 and played, swam, jumped and climbed here in my youth. In my earliest memories there were still remnants of the Norwegians -- who built Sunset Park and established St Michael's, whose chapel figures prominently into the spectacular view -- as well as other Scandinavians and Europeans. Homes and gardens were well maintained, businesses were clean and family oriented. Neighbors knew and looked out for one another. There were block parties every summer with live music from local garage bands. It was a heyday as far as I remember, but then again I was young and may be looking back with rose colored glasses. The 80s brought AIDS, the crack epidemic, gang activity, white flight, and a major surge in crime throughout all of NYC. Sunset Park became far less safe, particularly after dark. I have memories of being shaken down by teens only moderately older than myself in the daylight and one particularly bad memory of a Puerto Rican guy who sicced his vicious dog on me because I was a "white boy," which was an increasingly rare sight at the time. I moved away happily with my parents in my high school years just as we entered the 90s. When I returned in the early 2000s to live on 8th avenue for the better part of that decade I was elated to see Sunset Park returning to its former glory as a place to gather, socialize, exercise, chat with neighbors, watch the fireworks or just relax and take in the view. Part of the reason for the change was renewed investment in public infrastructure, but I think a greater part of it was the zero tolerance and broken window policies of the Giuliani era. I was raised in the political left wing and I still waffle regarding how I view his tenure as mayor, but you really can't argue with good old empirical real life experience. A reviewer below stated that Sunset Park is one of NYC's best-kept secrets -- which I can hardly argue with -- but went on to state that one should "hurry before the yuppies gent[rify] it". I'm not critiquing the commenter or her comment, but merely noting what I consider skewed logic I see emanating from the left that I feel needs to be observed more closely. If it is viewed as racist to suggest that crime grew proportionally with the growth of the Hispanic population (even though that is statistically true) or that Chinese businesses along 8th avenue have produced a level of filth that is retch-inducing on a hot summer day, which was not present when 8th ave was mostly Europeans (even though it is also true) then it has to be equally as racist to suggest that a demographic shift towards more Europeans and Caucasians is somehow a threat that needs to be vehemently denounced. Because they are viewed as the in-power group, it seems like you can say anything you like about Caucasians or the upwardly mobile and it's considered acceptable even if it has no basis in logic or reality. Meanwhile making comments about non-whites (poor non-whites in particular) is extremely taboo and carries a plethora of potential consequences even if the comment is logical and empirically demonstrable. For the most part, I genuinely love Sunset Park, and the multicultural nature of this neighborhood -- especially the Latin and Asian flavor -- make it a very special place to reside. But I also know that the more white people a Brooklyn neighborhood has, the more art and culture and safety and public gardens and cleanliness and chic restaurants and investment and volunteering and innumerable other very positive qualities it will have as well. And it's not because the "gentrifiers" have more financial capital. Most of the "new" white people I see in Sunset Park are either eastern Europeans who left their nations of origin to seek a better life, or recent graduates who came here from other parts of the country saddled with tons of debt and seeking a place they can actually afford. What they *do* have is cultural capital. How that translates into a bad thing is beyond me. If you're born poor, it's clearly not your fault, but if your family has been in the neighborhood for three generations and you're still poor then maybe you need to change your thinking and your approach to life. Blaming mere racism is a facile response and it's getting really tired. I say bring on the yuppies, keep the European immigrants coming and fuck the haters who only think demographic shift is a bad thing when it's THEIR group being displaced. I, for one, am super glad to see European faces when I walk around Sunset Park because it assures me the area will be cleaner, safer and more livable as a result. End of sermon. read more

I've been around this block more than a couple of times so I know my way. Great park to enjoy with the family and chill with your homies. Plenty of areas where you can have a picnic or bbq, and bring the family pet with you. The sunset is spectacular so if your looking to have some quiet time with your so this is the place to be. Oh and I've spent a few July 4th picnics loitering here so I can attest that the view is amazing (fireworks and all). Most important tip: It's definitely not a spot to linger or jog very early in the morning or late at nights, don't forget we're still in Sunset Park. read more

Beautiful view of the city, from a small, park in the center of a relaxed neighborhood. A good friend of mine live here, so we come here often walking with her dog. It is located very high comparing to the city surrounding it, and that makes it a great point to sit and watch the city (At any time). I love parks, and someone who live in the city I will never think that there are enough of them. I am not sure I would come all the way from Queens just to visit the park, for definitely from anywhere in Brooklyn. read more

Being able to see the Statue of Liberty and passing sailboats from your seat on the grass is pretty cool. Having lots of space to set up a picnic or resting spot is lovely. The people-watching is pretty good, too. It's not Chelsea or East Village people-watching. It's nitty-gritty, family-style, waltzing Chinese grandmothers, teenage-tension, volleyball where carrying is allowed people-watching. In the warmer months you can buy ice cream, tacos, fruit, drinks and so on from random vendors. You can also buy crappy children's flashing toys, but just say no. DO NOT buy ice cream from the ice cream truck. He sits at the 44th Street entrance and stinks up the place with his exhaust and blocks the ramp and overcharges and gets nasty. Get icy treats from the jingle bell carts. The negatives about this park all have to do with over-crowding in the neighborhood. It is TRASHY at the end of the weekend, or even at the end of the day. Broken glass keeps me nervous about when my kid will want to run around in the grass or even on the walkways. Respect the park, people! Also, if you bring kids to the playground or the sprinklers, try to be there before 5 PM on weekdays. It's a madhouse after that. The pool is very popular, and the Rec Center has classes and space for events. It's a used park, which is heartwarming. It's an overused park, which is sad. When I was a kid, Sunset Park was where diff folks went every week to get stabbed or shot (mostly stabbed). It was the heart of much of the violence in our area at that time (1980s and partial 1990s). Seventh avenue and Sixth avenue from the 40s up to 61st street had lots of problems, including some of the known drug blocks (from 45th street and 10th to 61st 4th and 5th and everything in between). So, it surprised me a lot when I moved back to Sunset Park in 2002 and learned that "shit done changed". It changed so much, that when I hooked up with my friends sister one night (hope he never reads this LOL), I actually had no issue walking her home through Sunset Park one night at 130am. Not a fucking peep! I would have never done this in my teens! It would have been like "car service" or "good luck, biatch". LOL Anyway, Sunset Park offers one of the best views in Brooklyn of NYC, Statue of Liberty, and more. It boasts some great handball players, some lousy Mexican volleyball players (they cheat, cuz they carry the ball), an awesome pool that only got better over the years (IF you go in the morning shift, cuz the late shift brings all the dickheads), and tons of great food trucks and piraqua peddlers in the area. After you're done experiencing the park, walk up to Seventh Avenue and eat in the famous pizzeria. It's soooo fucking good! read more

The best kept secret in new york. I used to live close-by. Hurry before the yuppies gent' it! This hood has great asian and latin eats. I would go to wash my laundry down the block then delight in the warm glow of the sun. I'd sit in the grass eat a deli sammie and ice cream. A very simple moment that unearthed some great nostalgia for me. After our first date with my girlfriend we came back to Sunset Park. It's pretty romantic on a summer night. I remember dancing in the park to Chinese music with my roommate along with other Chinese couples. This park is New York in a nutshell. It gets packed here in the summer. There are screaming tots everywhere. The pool is huge. It is fairly clean and heavily regulated by the gov/ the man. THE VIEW THOUGH! It is utterly Instagram worthy. You have the best view of Downtown Manhattan as well as the statue of liberty you reach out and touch it. read more

It's a very interesting park because it seems so... high. I don't know if there's natural rock underneath or is it landfill but it's just odd that it's so hilly. Meetup organizer said it's the highest natural point in Brooklyn, so I guess that's interesting. Few basketball and handball courts. What makes this park really unique is the community center there. We walked through what seemed like a bunch of neighbors playing ping pong when we were looking for the bathroom (lockers). Also a pretty large swimming pool outside. The park is beautiful but .... it's summertime and that means POOLS! This is one of the nicest free pools in Brooklyn! It's huge, well-staffed and clean! It's never overcrowded on the weekdays. Can't speak for the weekend, avoid any pool then!!!! The neighborhood is safe, but a bit isolated. You are not going to see people walking up and down the street, they are probably at work! Use Hopstop.com to plan your trip if you're not driving. You have to have a bathing suit and a lock. You can wear a T-shirt if you are a girl, but it must be over a bathing suit. No cell phones are allowed in the pool area. Leave it in your locker and unplug. They make you shake your towel out to make sure you have nothing hidden it it, so don't smuggle anything or you will be caught! The staff is strict, but that's what makes it safe. Perfect for families or groups. If you come with children, there is a free lunch offered at certain times. But you have to eat it outside. No food is allowed inside the pool locker area. Don't come with snacks. They will have to eaten or confiscated. Overall, the pool alone will make you forget that you're in the City. Unplug, relax and enjoy! read more

I love coming here for the free pool in the summer. However, the line does get a bit frustrating, since 9385923423 people come to swim or just cool off. I don't really like the changing room though, it feels so dirty and filthy there. Gives me the impression I could catch something. It's nice that they don't charge you money for using the lockers though. I believe there's also an addition of a volleyball court here as well. It's about a 2 minute walk from the pool. I have been living here for almost two years, only about 6 short blocks away, and I had not made it to Sunset Park. It was fairly worth it, although altogether not quite as big as I thought it was going to be (the green areas are truncated by the public playground and pool on the eastern side). Tossing a football with Pat one sunny Saturday afternoon, the view really was quite good. The playground is fairly large and the public pool is larger than Olympic size (I don't know if it's in use or not, probably later on in the summer). It's not the cleanest park or the most well maintained and if it gets crowded on the green you might not feel like you have as much space. Characters are nice enough, mostly neighborhood families and teens. The view is pretty much the best thing because what people don't realize is in Brooklyn, you don't need to be in a tall, intimidating building to get excellent views of the city and the river. The slope is pretty strong thus affording an unobstructed, nearly treeless view. the best thing about that afternoon was the dude who was cracking this big ass whip, it was thick like triple knotted or however you want to describe it and the crack was extremely loud, dust particles would cloud up the air around the crack which was pretty cool. read more

The pool here is GIGANTIC. Plenty of space here to lay your towel out in the sun without being on top of anyone else. I plan to spend a lot of time here this summer. *When you go to a public pool don't forget your lock, most spots wont let you in without a way to lock up your stuff. As others have said, the view from this park is beautiful. You will also work up a sweat walking up the hill through the park just to get to the pool, so bring water. read more

I used to jog around here quite often. Great view of Manhattan and great park overall. There's a public pool that opens up during the summer and other recreational activities in the main building. Only con I can think of is that you can't really picnic during the summer because lots of people like to play soccer and the soccer ball probably will get on your food or hit you. read more
