Chef Jason & his amazing team are on their way to creating a Michelin Star rating -- it's gonna happen given the inspiring dishes, and uniquely tasty dishes they are creating! This is a true GEM in Anderson Wine Country, and we loved every bite -- the short ribs, seafood stew, any pizza they make, and their salads were stupendous. We had high hopes for Wickson - it's super cute and really intimate - we loved the fact that we could see in the kitchen and there are only a few tables. Unfortunately neither the food nor the service met our expectations. The $24 plates of crab ravioli were undercooked and the filling was runny and flavorless. The $45 halibut was overcooked and underseasoned, and the accompanying potatoes were overcooked. The $48 short ribs were dry and underseasoned. We ordered a bottle of wine from their menu and were somehow charged a corkage fee. The service was incredibly slow - our glasses (both water and booze) were empty much of the time. We wanted to order dessert but really just lost interest because our server wasn't checking in. The bill for our table of 4 was $440 before tip, and we were all left wanting. So good! We stayed at the Madrones this weekend. Unbelievable weather! In the midst of rain we had 72 degree day! Just lovely. But wait!!! Dinner at Wickson the first night. Two of us had the cioppino and other had short rib. So good! So, so good! Seated so we could watch the chef and sous chef in front of the wood fired oven. Cozy and entertaining! Food was most excellent! The bread with the balsamic warmed perfectly so you had a nice crisp on the outer layer. Great for dipping in the cioppino! Gotta get all that delicious sauce. The next night we had the Caesar salad and 2 had chicken and then another cioppino. Had the same waiter both nights and he was great! Suggested some wonderful wine both nights. Excellent service and excellent food! Thank you! We will be back!! I must add that we had the candy cap dessert and WOW! So unique! read more

What a great find! It's super easy to drive past the restaurant so once you past Goldeneye winery going towards Mendocino start looking for it on the left hand side of the road. Absolutely delicious and creative food. At the time of this writing, a new local pizza place has come to life (Offspring) and I'd encourage Wickson to offer pizza less often and do other dishes. This place is out of place. One of the greatest things about hanging out in Anderson Valley is you get to taste some of the best Pinot noir in the world without the snobbery and attitude of other more popular wine regions. The Madrones is an awesome place to stay. The accommodations are top notch. The restaurant that used to be on the premises was perfect for the area. Comfortable comfort food pizza. Wickson is trying to be haute cuisine in the wrong place. And frankly, poorly executed. The limited menu we had offered lamb, trout, beans and chicken as main course options. Not even a basic beef entree. The lamb was very ordinary and disappointing. The chicken was average. I will give the props for their bread, which you have to ask for. On top of the disappointing food, we were swarmed with flies. I control flies in my backyard. You would think a restaurant could make some effort to do the same. Wickson is suffering from (1) missing the market for what this area really needs - quality comfort food for folks after a day of wine tasting (2) doing a poor job at trying to be Chez Panisse in Anderson Valley. So so lucky, as a local, to have San Francisco-quality wood-fired dining in Philo. Alexa and Rodney are doing the impossible, holding down a small restaurant and putting out stellar food during a very difficult time. Local ingredients, skilled dish composition...all kissed by fire. Just finished an excellent dinner while staying at The Madrones in Philo. Jason Azevedo and his team took over the Wickson Restaurant last August, and delivered well-crafted food and very pleasant service at this homey, somewhat funky destination. The menu, while not extensive, has a selection of entrees and small plates reflecting the chef's experience and ingredient specialties, and the wines are carefully chosen local favorites. Wow. This place is not only accommodating but delicious! The service is exceptional, they are dog friendly and flexible. I popped In on a cold, rainy and slow night. The patio wasn't open but they made an exception for my husband, my dogs and I. When they sat us on the back patio I was immediately transported to Southern Europe. The atmosphere was calm and serene. The drink menu was eclectic and inclusive. The food was delicious. We started with the delicata squash and farro, which was a beautiful menagerie of local and fresh vegetables. We also had the house bread and this was the first time I actually enjoyed a grape tomato by itself, ever in my 35 years of eating. We also had the smoked half chicken and wow! The flavor! Finally got dessert we had the apple and pear crumble topped with in house made vanilla ice cream and it was the perfect end to a perfect meal! I'll be coming back here over and over. read more

Wickson Restaurant is the new in-house restaurant at the Madrones in Philo, in the heart of the Anderson Valley, serving lunch and dinner. We ate dinner their twice, once for take out and once dining in on their back patio. Both meals were excellent -- these are talented chefs! The food is fresh, locally sourced, carefully prepared and delicious. We tried several things -- roast chicken, home made sausages, salad niçoise with fresh local tuna, all great. But the vegetable were even better, e.g., a dish of roast carrots and carrot hummus that was so good we ordered it twice. Even the sides, like roast potatoes, were addictive. The wine list is also really good, as you would expect for the area. The owners were very helpful and nice, despite all the problems they're facing with tourism down, smokey air, and the many other challenges that restaurants face right now. We are rooting for them and will definitely return! read more

Disappointing beyond belief. We started with several of the appetizers to share and were looking forward to the experience given the chef is new. We found the food bland and the service really poor. Waited 10 minutes for initial service and no follow up service asking if we wanted a main course until we asked to speak to the manager. Given the hype, expected an amazing meal. However, the service was barely adequate (mistakes made and no apologies from servers) and the meals themselves were poorly executed. Two of our party ordered the chicken and roasted cauliflower. The chicken was tender but the sauce was mediocre and bordering on bland. Worse: the cauliflower was seriously under cooked and lacked the taste and feel of good roasted cauliflower. Almost raw cauliflower - not good. Two of our party ordered the sausage dish. This consisted of a large, salty sausage, a very small potato "cake," and a pool of mustard. Barely an entree despite the inflated price. Will not recommend or visit this place again. read more

Came here after the innkeeper at our hotel recommended it. This review is a a littler late, but: PROS: Intimate, quaint, cozy setting. Seated right away. Appetizers came out quickly. Onion fritters and fresh baked sourdough bread with warm cheese were yummy. CONS: Fruit fly infestation. I mean there were hundreds swarming us and our food and drinks while we tried to dine. We were told they were "attracted to red wine" and given cut up paper menus to cover our glasses (everyone in the restaurant had them), but that didn't stop us from having to fight them off and fish them out of our drinks and off our food. I ordered a beer and didn't get a paper menu cover, so within seconds there were fruit flies drowning in my beer. Needless to say, it went to waste. I guarantee I swallowed a few by mistake. At a minimum, our drinks should have been comped for having to fish flies out. It was gross. Since the restaurant knows they are having a problem, they should do something proactive about handling the situation-fans or bring in an exterminator. Additionally, the food was overpriced and unimpressive. I ordered the roasted chicken and while it was tender, it was unseasoned and flavorless. OVERALL: Maybe if they get their bug problem under control, it would be an OK spot for wine and appetizers. read more

Perfect respite on a gorgeous, warm evening. Wonderful, thoughtful appetizers (Definitely try the croquettes) and superbly cooked Lingcod fish (Greenling Family and not easy to do well...kudos to Chef Alexa!). Meal was complete with a made to order Apple crisp a la mode. Wines by the glass were limited (though several more available by the bottle, but I was solo...), but thoughtful selection and I enjoyed the glass of Pinot from Mendocino County. AMAZING food from two chefs with legit wood fire oven experience. Everything is top notch quality and thoughtful, seasonal, balanced and delicious. We've been twice and we're obsessed with the lentil soup (yes, obsessed. With lentil soup.), bibb lettuce salads, tomato soup and grilled cheese, sunchoke pizza, chicken confit, cannelloni with wild mushrooms and spinach, and that quince Basque cheesecake! Also super appreciate the concise but excellent wine list with a heavy dose of interesting, food-friendly, local selections. Currently you can order at the door and they will bring your meal outside to you. We loved eating in the garden. I would eat every meal here if I could.
