My friend was telling me how she grew up next to White Rose in Highland Park, reminiscing about the days of old. And then I was going to see her the very next day (today). So we're out, driving north from Edison, and I'm following her directions. She told me to turn left and I said "Oh, but I can turn right on red and then just left on Walnut." And as I got ready to turn left on Walnut, there was the sign on the corner. White Rose. So I may have turned left just a little more lazily and eased into the parking lot instead of the street. What a nice surprise for her! And with that, we both were introduced to the Roselle location, instead of the Highland Park location we each knew. Pro: I love the classic NJ diner atmosphere, with all the seating on stools or two-fer tables in one unified area. Pro: You have the service area right up front, and you can see the food being prepared. Pro: Great value food, made fresh. My Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a bagel had a solid amount of meat, perfect balance of ingredients, everything lightly toasted or fried just right. My friend's California burger (just means a burger with all the regular toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion) was much bigger than I expected, though they also have small burgers if that's your vibe. I enjoyed her fries, which is not something I always say. Again, cooked perfectly. Con: Or is it a pro: Off the beaten path, not right downtown, so a little harder to find. But that means it's not super busy and you can find a seat. Verdict: Find yourself a seat and try it out. read more

Old school memories.. stopped by through the town and this place still looks the same. Vintage burger joint with milk shakes and diner food, but more. Tv is an upgrade from 40 years ago. What a nostalgic moment. Ordered the burger special which was great back in the day. The burgers still have that old greasy diner flare. Best after a night of hanging with friends. Great service. It's a decent place. The prices are cheaper compared to other places, but I don't think the food is worth it based on what I got. I ordered a burger and it felt as if it had no seasoning on it at all. I took a couple of bites at most and left it alone unfortunately. I ordered chili cheese fries as well, and the chili tasted as it came straight from the can, was warmed up, and put on my plate. Some salt and pepper at the very least would have been appreciated on the chili. Cheese was also very bland. I had a better experience eating the small number of fries that weren't covered by the chili cheese. My partner ordered a wrap and he mentioned he enjoyed it more than the burger, but I didn't try it since I lost my appetite considering how bad and tasteless my order was. I did end up going to another restaurant later instead since I was starving. I will say the ambiance and the servers are really nice. I could see they were working hard, despite it being a small place. I would like to come back as I really wanted to give this place an opportunity + maybe it wasn't a good day for the burgers this time lol, but maybe not anytime soon. Let's get this out of the way up front: If you're looking for a more classy diner experience then go to Vicki's in Westfield or the Fanwood Diner. White Rose System is built to be a callback to the diners of yesteryear, featuring silver on the outside with a (sort of?) art deco inspired shape while the interior features a long counter with bar stool style seating. A giant jukebox that saw its heyday in (perhaps) the 90's sits (perhaps unplugged?) in the middle across from the counter. Along the back wall behind the counter is the menu (just look up) along with signs printed and tapes to the middle of the counter area. It's a big grungy, definitely very no frills and honestly for me that is part of its appeal. There is a complete lack of pretense at this diner. I have never eaten in the diner, but I have ordered food to go and hung out while they cooked it. The waitresses are always really good about jotting down the orders they get quickly and the chef working behind the counter seems to move at lightning speed. I have ordered from this diner multiple times getting items such as grits, corned beef and omelets with hash browns. The quality is good, a solid B (in contrast I place diners like Vicki's at a firm A) though once the toast I got was very tough (not sure why). If you're looking for some quick "grab and go" food and you're not looking for anything fancy this is a good joint to check out. read more

If you like white castle burgers but would like to forgo the stomach woes this place is for you. It's unpretentious so you may miss it, but if you are a burger enthusiast have to try it. I had two sliders (no cheese) with fries and a soda for about $8. I liked that the burgers were seamed with the tiny onions. I loved that the patty wasn't huge. But most of all I loved the bread. Now it's not the traditional potato bread you may be accustomed to, but it's very very good. Fries were nice and crispy. Not salted which I prefer as the salt shaker was right there. If I had to pick one thing to be fussy about - the ketchup they put out is very sweet. To my New Yorker pallet this seems to be the case for a lot of Jersey sauces so this may be a personal preference. I would love to have the option of hunts ketchup though! read more

I've only ever been to the Highland Park location, this was my first time visiting the Roselle one. Service is fast. The burger was juicy. They are a smash style burger. Atmosphere: You cannot get an older diner than the White Rose System. It's a shiny, square, metallic diner, located in the hill. The inside is bar seating only. The White Rose System fits about 20 people and everyone sits on a stool. Coffee: The coffee at the White Rose System is no-frills only. I got a small cup that held about 8 ounces. It was good and it tasted like perfect diner coffee. Food: The White Rose System menu is on the backboard and it's small with no frills. You aren't going to find healthy but you will find their famous Taylor Ham Rolls. I knew I wanted a Taylor Ham Roll with cheese, ketchup, egg, and tomato. I don't typically order Taylor Hams (or Pork Rolls) so it was fun to try something different. It was a great breakfast sandwich and it was exactly what I pictured an old school diner to have. Service: You aren't getting a waitress or hostess at the White Rose System.  The manager takes your order and brings it out to you a few minutes later.  After ordering my Taylor Ham, it was ready within 2 minutes. Cost: For my sandwich and coffee, the cost was $5.80! That might be one of the cheapest diner meals I've ever had. Would I Come Back? I enjoyed the White Rose System and the old school atmosphere. Corned beef hash (canned) was terrible. Asked for it crispy or well done - came mushy. Only option for eggs were fried or scrambled - no poached eggs. Opted for the fried eggs but those were cooked hard with no yoke whatsoever. Rye toast was good (prepared by waitress). Home fries were ok. The service was excellent and the attitude of the waitress was very positive and accommodating. I'll be back but it's all about what you menu items you select I'm guessing. read more

I ordered from here based on the reviews, but clearly something has changed. This is a $7 sandwich. Even before covid 19 a bacon egg and cheese on a roll usually was under $5 and was full of eggs, soft edible bacon and cheese. Bacon was extremely overcooked and hard. I went into this place not expecting much. Just needed something cheap and open at three in the morning. From the outside it looks like an old fashion hole in the wall diner. When you go in it's nothing fancy but when you look at the menu you see everything is dirt cheap. The first thing you think is OK what's the quality? Placed an order at 8:46pm...Online order time kept fluctuating but at some point stated expected to arrive within 4/5minutes -9 minutes...Received a text at 9:06 stating the Dash Driver was waiting to pick up the order and the new expected time will be between 9:26-9:31 pm....yet the online expected order time stated 8-9 minutes before delivery. Received email and text at 9:29 pm that the order has been cancelled because the store was now closed. So why accept my payment and my order in the first place? This place is the real deal. And, so is Frank. Where can you find a little chrome diner with their own mix of ground beef? Plus, homemade soups and a broad menu for any taste. It seems like every time we're there, Frank is mopping the floor again. That is very much appreciated. Try the meatloaf sandwich little little gravy on toasted rye. This is my favorite drop-in breakfast stop. It's not very big, but you can call ahead and take it to go. I have had to eat in the car on occasion. I choose between 5-7am to grab a bite whilst calling ahead, they usually have my food waiting at a seat as I enter. Being a regular is a nice perk, although they treat everyone the same. The staff is great, they have a couple TV's on with the news going and if you place your order when you arrive; the foods out before you start to wonder. Oh yeah, almost forgot...they use blue Greek cups for small coffee's. If you are of fan of caffeine and look forward to good cup o' joe...they have it.
