I was visiting from out of state and decided to try the White Rose in Linden . During college and early adulthood frequented the one in Highland Park . Sadly grew up in Linden and never went to this one. So I ordered the trifecta - the Taylor Ham , egg and cheese , the Cali cheese and BLT. All were quite tasty and just as I remembered them . This is where BLTs go to die , lots of bacon and perfectly toasted bread . The moment I saw the Cali cheeseburger on the grill it was a trip down memory lane in taste . The Pork roll sandwich was equally tasty I went without the potato . Better to eat there but I took home to share with family . I ordered delivery through DoorDash. I ordered a pork roll egg and cheese and hot pastrami sandwich on rye bread. The pork roll sandwich came on a roll, it was on the soggy side. I wish the pork roll was cooked more, but it was good. They put a good amount of meat on it. The pastrami sandwich was just pastrami and bread. There was no sauce, mustard, pickle and the bread wasn't even toasted. I added my own mustard. It was pretty good and they put a lot of pastrami. Overall good and I would order breakfast again. On Wednesday, April 23rd at 11:30 a.m, I went for the late breakfast rush at the White Rose Diner in Highland Park, New Jersey. There was only little parking, but I discovered a place on a side street close by. My dinner was about $12 overall, including a typical Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwich along with hot chocolate. Though modest, the restaurant is clean; the retro ambiance chrome trimmings and counter seating enhances its look. The waitress greeted me with a friendly "Good morning, what can I get started for you?" Though most of the chairs were occupied, I waited no more than ten minutes to get my meal. Working fast in the open kitchen, the cook produced a hot and tasty sandwich. A real Jersey classic done correctly, the Taylor ham sandwich is highly recommended. read more

Recently I was in Linden, New Jersey and I wanted to stop at the White Rose Diner.  It's a quintessential diner and one of the top 10 in the state. It was a matter of time before I finally made it. Atmosphere: The White Rose Diner is a small, shiny, stainless steel, metallic, square diner. It sits about 12 people. Most of the seating is bar seating, but there is a table in the back.  If you are looking for an older, more retro diner in New Jersey, it doesn't exist. These old stainless steel diners now resemble fast-food takeout places. You can sit down and eat, but with your order ready in 5 minutes, I watched many people take it and go. Coffee: B Like many of the small, old school diners in New Jersey, it was a small 10-ounce cup of coffee. Food: The menu is written at the top of the diner. There is no handheld menu, but you can read it behind the counter. You take your order at the register and sit down. The White Rose Diner is well known for their "Taylor Ham" (their words; I have no bias in the name.). Since the White Rose Diner won an award for their Taylor Ham, I felt like it was the only option. There aren't many healthy options and it's your old school greasy spoon. The Taylor Ham is a breakfast sandwich with Taylor Ham (which is thinly sliced ham), egg, cheese, and condiments. The White Rose Diner adds potatoes which gave them their own jive. It tasted great to me. It was a large and filling breakfast sandwich. Service: The White Rose Diner had one of the best services of any diner I've been too. Two employees were working, which is all I assume they need. The owner chatted with each customer in the restaurant. Would I Come Back? The White Rose Diner was excellent and I think anyone visiting New Jersey should go if you're looking for the quintessential, metallic, diner experience. One of the reasons I decided to try this restaurant is because I ordered take out from them through Uber Eats one morning and became HOOKED on their "Fish and Grits" meal. I actually tried to order through Uber Eats again, however due to the high booking fee-I decided to pay them a visit. This restaurant has a very old classic feel to it- kind of like the old traditional restaurants you see back in the 1960's. Although I can appreciate a classic appeal, I wasn't really into the traditional look as I thought the restaurant was a bit small- hence the reason for "4" stars. However, I will say that the lady working the front desk (although very busy) was nice and accommodating. The main thing, is the dish that I've tried twice now was AMAZING! Run of the mill grease spoon diner. I ordered fish and grits. Grits were cooked perfectly, but lack salt completely. Grits have to be cooked in salted water. No amount of salt added afterwards will properly season them. Fish was definitely previously frozen with a slit fishy taste. Taylor Ham sandwich was smashed to smithereens. I could not tell that there once was a Kaiser roll involved with this "sandwich". I miss good old fashion diners. Clearly this isn't an upscale diner... which those too, are hard to come by. This is my first stop in the Slider circuit. (White Manna, White Rose, etc). I went here first cause I was nearby. It was just as expected, a small steel diner with mostly original furnishings. Cold inside though, like the heat was off. I ordered 2 sliders with onions, fries & a soda. ($6.50) The sliders came on plain hamburger buns (like the ones at the supermarket) and sliced pickles on the side. The meat was tasty, the onions make the flavor, BUT, there was too much bun for this baby burger and a lame bun at that. The fries were ordinary diner fries. I would skip them and get another burger. Verdict...needs more meat, different bun. Maybe charge slightly more, but judging from the area I can understand the situation. I'm still giving this place 3 stars because the owner was friendly, the meat was good and I guess I get all tingley for these type of establishments. read more

Disappointed is all I can say.... ordered an ham and cheese omelette with tomato and mushroom and it was literally an omelette with the ham thrown on top... WHAT?! Lazy is the only adjective that comes to me. I upped the rating because my girlfriend's veggie omelette looked much better. Toast is more so warm bread with butter on it. The space is a 1940's stainless steel diner that has certainly seen better days, but which captures the essence of Happy Days in bilingual style. The parking lot is big enough for maybe a dozen cars, and the counter service has 8 spinners and a few booths hugging the front wall. The grill is out front where the chef can take your order without moving her hands from the spatula as she flips, presses, and tosses cheese and onions on the sizzling meat. The taste is all you want from a traditional burger joint. Full of zest and savory onion flavor on a bigger than standard bun. A strong squirt of ketchup closes the deal. You will need a fistful of napkins to keep fingers and chin free of dripping oily grease. If you are a 5 Guys and White Castle fan, White Rose really is the best of both worlds. It has the heft and feel of 5 Guys, with that greasy finish, while also offering the onion juice and soft roll of the Castle. The double burger was ultimately as satisfying as both combined. The only weakness come from the fries. They are frozen crinkle cuts and really tasteless. The onion rings are somewhat better, but not all that great. If you are a burger maven, White Rose Diner is worth the trip down memory lane. read more

I was near Kean University, and had a bit of time for breakfast. I searched for "diner" on Yelp, and when this place came up, I had mistaken it for White Manna. It turned out to be an old-school local spot with its own reputation, so I was happy to check it out. I sat at the counter near the grill so my coat & scarf now need to be laundered! I kept them on due to it being cold inside. The corned beef hash was the most homemade I'd ever had, with cubes of red skin potatoes and equally large cubes of corned beef. It had a sweet taste that was weird, but the rest of it was good (grits and eggs). I ordered a burger to go, which had a medium-well patty and generous toppings of bacon and mushrooms. Too bad the mushrooms were on the burnt side. Service was nice and friendly. But, while I enjoyed this place, I felt like an intruder disrupting the local milieu. Ordered breakfast here from Uber Eats for my wife and I. We got the bacon egg and cheese, corn muffin, and egg white omelette with veggies. Bacon egg and cheese was a solid bodega style sandwich, which I love, so no complaints there. The corn muffin came toasted with butter, although I didn't ask for that, It was bango! Omelette on the other hand wasn't prepared how we asked. It was whole eggs and not egg whites. Also the toast was white instead of wheat. My wife didn't care too much but I just find It incredibly frustrating when I ask for food a certain way and instead of calling me to tell me they ran out of egg whites they just do whatever the hell they want. While these mishaps aren't the end of the world, hence me still giving 3 stars, the restaurant overall isn't a 5 Star diner so my rating is very generous. Could not believe how unsanitary inside and outside looks but gave it a try. I should have known... Rye toast was slightly warm bread, not toast. I had seen a "Hot Dog" sign while driving down Elizabeth ave. I went back later thinking it was a dirty water dog cart. It turned out to be white rose. I've been coming to this diner for years and it's usually to get breakfast sandwiches. Today was a little different, I decided to order breakfast for everyone else and a burger for me. I was told to give them 15 mins which was fine because I had to drive there anyway. Once I got there I was told that my order wasn't ready and that I had to give them a few more minutes. Once my order was ready I paid and went to work. Once I got to my job I noticed that my burger was still raw ( very pink) in the inside with ketchup and mayo plastered all over it. I then got in my car and went back. I took the burger out of the bag and told the owner/ cook that my burger wasn't done. He looked at me with disgust. Before he would respond he looked at me and then asked what would I like him to do because he's not making another one. I handed him the bag and walked out. Thanks for your service. They start out as a small mound of ground beef not pre-shaped patties, that is smashed into thinly sliced (or chopped) onions and cooked on a flat top which gives them a crisp crust, they are served with pickles and ketchup on a soft bun, which is place on top of the burger during the final minutes of cooking, A small burger will run you $1.25. I have seen the silver diner before on drives through Clark and thought it looked cool. So I went to try the burger Saturday afternoon. Immediately the staff attitude was that of "you don't like it, you can leave." No greeting, no attention, and more interested in continuing their conversation among themselves. This burger better be good. It was not. I White-Castle thin fried burger on a GIANT roll. Maybe if I folded the burger in 4, I could have tasted it, but all I got was bread and ketchup. 5 minutes after my burger, the fries came out. (No, "Your fries will be just a minute, hon.") I was hoping they forgot them so I could just go. Downed a couple of scorching hot fries that were nicely crispy, paid my 8 bucks and 3 dollar tip and left. I don't know why places like this have such a following or get such good reviews, but thought there should be a review up here with a little perspective. I ordered the chicken and waffles and a side of grits. Delivery was ontime and the chicken was honestly the best chicken strips I've ever had. The grits could have used a bit more salt but otherwise everything was good. I had authentic maple syrup at home, I think they use the corn syrup stuff but authentic maple syrup made everything else so much better I definitely will be ordering from them soon. read more

Food made from scratch, simple really. This is a nice little run down spot in the middle of Linden that you might not look twice at if not for all the award winning posters outside of the building. There is nothing fancy here, it's a small, tiny little diner, and the parking lot is small. So why come here? Because it's old-fashioned good food. Original Sliders, Fish and grits, breakfast sandwiches you name it. If you're looking for some good classic American style comfort food, or a quick breakfast that doesn't involve the fast-food chains, I can't recommend a better place.
