Every Memorial Day we like to seek out new hot dog places to kick off Memorial Day. We went with the Italian combo of hot dog and sausage. **warning** come hungry! I got the single combo with hot dog and hot Italian sausage, onions, potatoes and peppers. I told them I didn't care for the green, so they gave me red only. It was comfort food to the max! Delish, but I couldn't eat the whole thing. Took some sausage and potatoes for later. Hubby got the double which was too much food for one human but he used a fork to eat the potatoes, onions and peppers and work his way down to the meat. The people were super friendly and accommodating. Basic setting with no frills, but simply delicious food. They also have American style hot dogs and plenty of sides, but we will have to come back for that another time. read more

Italian sausage sandwich.... All I can say is... Huge!!!!! Great sandwiches and way more than I can eat! The Italian sausage sandwich with potatoes and onions was excellent. Potatoes were cooked just right. The flavor was amazing. It's a order at the counter and they call your name kind of place. Laid-back and just a chill place to have a quick lunch. I have wanted to come here for forever and finally had the chance to. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the gentleman behind the counter. My boyfriend soadbhebahs been there for years. He was very nice and attentive. I've never had an Italian hit dog before so this was the day. I ordered a single one and bean was that enough. My boyfriend ordered a double veggie and it was huge. I'm so glad we didn't order a side of fries. My sandwich was loaded with potatoes. It is definitely an interesting combination that I never wouid have come up with on my own. The hot dog itself had snap, the roll was soft, the onions and peppers were soft and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. Just had this for lunch today, I've never been to Kenilworth before, but its food has already impressed me. Food : I end up ordering an American hotdog, which was practically as good as Rutts Hut, which surprised me. They also had some amazing curly fries and sold C&C soda! Aesthetic : classic hot dog / burger spot. Simple and clean, nothing more. Service : I unfortunately, did not catch the name of the woman who worked up at front, but she was very nice and kind to every single person that walked in including myself. Jimmy buff classic double with everything is my go too... 9 outta 10..the food product never fails with flavor, explosions, juicy potatoes, spicy sausage, and a great hotdog dog snap.., unfortunately, in this location in Kenilworth, the gentleman behind the counter was very dead with emotion ordering wasn't fun or pleasant. I was in the neighborhood, and since I had been familiar with this place for a while, I decided to give it a try. I got the mixed sandwich called Matty's special with the works. It was good, it had all the different things in it. It came in a giant bread with tons of mixed meats, which are combined with various flavors (hot dog, Italian sausage, ham, cheese steak, etc.), topped with green peppers, potatoes, onions, etc. It was nice. I just ate most of the inside and some bread with a fork and a knife. I don't know how one will eat that whole sandwich in one sitting. The price of the sandwich was around $17, which is very reasonable for the amount of food provided. The person behind the counter provided me with good service and was friendly. The ambiance of the place was clean, but there wasn't much to mention in terms of decorations. They had some historical pictures of the place. In the heart of downtown Kenilworth, NJ is Jimmy Buff's, a hot dog emporium originally from Newark that has been slinging popular sandwich sausages since 1932. So, although something of a drive from Bucks County, when the urge for a frankfurter struck, I chose Jimmy Buff's to scratch my itch. I love Italian hot dogs from my days in Trenton (Casino Dogs). It was on the menu, and that's where I went. The restaurant looked like a typical pizza shop; clean with tables and booths along the walls and ordering done at the cashier in back. But, no tomato pie here, just a long list of toppings for the dogs. I had a choice of one or two at the base of the creation, followed by a mix of sautéed onions and peppers, topped with a load of thin sliced potatoes grilled in XV olive oil. It was all stuffed into a pizza dough pita and wrapped in aluminum foil to hold the heat. Although the hot dog looked thinner than the Hebrew Nationals I have at home, and was deep fried rather than boiled, it was a tremendous delicious fun meal for a Saturday afternoon. The round coins of potato were slightly crisp on the outside and soft within, lightly salted and black peppered. Just excellent. The onion and pepper mix was pleasantly savory, although there should have been a better balance of the two. The hot dog itself was well garliced and had a good bite sound. Service was friendly and patient with my first visit decisions. Serena and Tom answered questions and engaged warmly with me. All in all, a strong and inviting first experience. I just walked in today with my girlfriend, and walked up to the counter to oder--there was a young angry dude with a chip on his shoulder, who just stared at us when we walked up--no "hi what can I get you?" or any greeting whatsoever for that matter. I've tried jimmy buff in east Hanover over 10 years ago. I didn't really like it because it's a big vat of oil cooking all the hot dogs, potatoes, and veggies. the bread soaks up all the oil and it's a big greasy mess. I tried this location with a work place associate so he can check it off his bucket list. the food was the same as experienced. it just not my type of food anymore. I have to watch my salt and cholesterol :( the guy taking the orders. he should try voice acting. if you know you know. A delicious soft roll similar in shape to a half pita bread but thicker, and much more tasty with a sabrett hotdog, smothered in fried potatoes, onions, and peppers. First time visitor to the Original Jimmy Buff. The originator of Italian Style sandwiches. Ok they say so. I do not know!!! But what I do know is if you want a really good Italian Hot sausage sandwich. Make your way to Jimmy buffs. The hot sausage was really favorable tasty. And you will find yourself wanting some more bread. The bread is soft and firm if you can understand what I am writing. To say you will not be disappointed is an understatement. The place is very clean,warm and welcoming. The counter lady was all smiles and friendly. Bathroom equally as clean. This is easy to get to off the parkway. Street parking in the front which at11:30am was easy to get. There is additional parking in the back. I'm very sure they need it at these prices. So I've been wanting to go to Jimmy buffs pretty much my whole life because my grandma talked about it all the time. She ate there growing up in the 30s and 40s all the way till the 70s when she moved away to Florida. She went to the original location in Newark, which I think is closed down. I finally found my way there. The restaurant was clean and They had a typical menu of hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, fingers, fries, etc. We ordered an Italian dog and a double Italian dog with a side of onion rings and a cup of chili with cheese. The Italian hotdog is served in a roll made out of pizza dough topped with fried onions, peppers and potatoes. The bread was very soft, which was surprising because I expected it to be crusty on the outside like pizza, but it was still good. The hotdog was extremely tasty as it was fried and oil so you can't go wrong with anything fried of course! however, my dog was missing peppers. I only had a few onions and tons of potatoes. It was more like I was eating a potato sandwich with a little bit of hotdog and onions in it. My dad got peppers in his but he also thought there was way too many potatoes his and we both picked off quite a few potatoes. Onion rings we're good, large and crunchy. The chili was very uneventful. It tasted like hot dog chili that you get out of a can. The cheese was a slice of American cheese cut in half laid on top. I could not wait to write this review. I've been a customer for over 60 years as I would frequent the other Jimmy Buffs located in West Orange. They were absolutely fantastic as all of their sandwiches were great. The Jimmy Buffs in Kenilworth should follow the same methods for food prep as the other one. I ordered a single chicken cheese sandwich. My wife had the single veggie sandwich. First of all, the bread was a soggy mess and failed to hold the potatoes, peppers and onions. The chicken sandwich had a thin slice of chicken cutlet that tasted old and rancid. The cheese on the sandwich appeared to be imitation cheese (Kraft food cheese). The peppers and onions were not sliced appropriately as their sizes were too thick and clumpy, thus giving the appearance that minimal to no effort was made in selecting them and slicing. Also, they were overcooked and had no crunch. The white onions they used were tasteless and slimy (red onions would have been better). The potatoes were excessive and overwhelmed the sandwich to such a degree that I barely noticed the chicken. The whole ratio of chicken to potatoes to onions and peppers were insultingly OFF. Both sandwiches were haphazardly thrown together. THIS PLACE IS GIVING JIMMY BUFFS A BAD NAME. THEY SHOULD CLOSE FOR A MONTH AND HAVE THE OTHER JIMMY BUFFS IN WEST ORANGE TRAIN THEIR COOKS. The only good thing about this place is that they offer parking in the back and their bathroom is clean. I will not patronage this place anymore as they seem to be going straight down the toilet. Finally got to try this place. I called in and they require you to order and pay over the phone. It cost about $7 for the two hot dogs. They do this so you can just pick up and go. The man that took my order was really nice and informative. Only street parking is available. When I got there all I had to do was tell the man my name and they had my food packed and ready. Pressed for time I suggested Jimmy Buff's Kennelworth and we stopped. I had my usual double dog mustard on the bottom, potatoes, onions, peppers and ketchup on top and it was perfect as usual. They are a hot dog establishment founded in 1932 in Newark- you guessed it- NJ. If you're even vaguely familiar with an Italian hotdog, then Jimmy Buff's is technically not a stranger to you, even if you've never been there. The reason being- they are the original inventors of this famous sandwich. It's their creation of hotdogs, fried onions, green peppers and potatoes inside an Italian pizza roll that has garnered them worldwide attention. Jimmy Buff's has been featured on food channel after food channel and named the "20 best hotdogs in the U.S." by Yahoo Food. Looking at the menu, I was surprised to see so many new favorites that I wasn't previously familiar with. The Jimmy Buff's I remember only served hotdogs but some newer sandwiches versions were on the menu like hamburgers, sausage, steak and even veggie! I ordered a combination hotdog & sausage sandwich for my daughter and a hamburger sandwich for my son. I chatted a bit with the man behind the counter who was both friendly and funny. He seems like he enjoys his job. :-) Each sandwich was around $10 and change and if the whole sandwich was too large, You have the option of choosing a half for a few bucks less. In my case, I know my kids can eat AND I knew they'd love Jimmy Buff's! So ordering the whole sandwich was a no-brainer. I brought the sandwiches home and just as I expected, they were a hit! However, the the potatoes were over cooked. The whole sandwich was one big soggy mess that required dissecting just to eat. I think I'm done with this place. I'll just make my own sandwiches. Went to Jimmy Buffs an all time favorite of my childhood in Irvington but it definitely wasn't what I remember or expected. Don't remember ever paying $10 for a double Italian hotdog. So we ordered via the phone and ordered 2 double Italian hotdogs 1 with just ketchup and onions and the other with mustard, ketchup and onions. NO PEPPERS. Pay the $21, get our order and drive 40 mins home and open up the sandwiches and low and behold the 1st on has mustard (which shouldn't had any mustard) and a little ketchup on the top of the potatoes. The 2nd had the same thing which was ok but BOTH had PEPPERS which we clearly told the guy on the phone. Wasn't like it was busy and don't know how he got it wrong. If I was closer to them I would have brought them back. 2nd they had way too many onions and not enough potatoes. Again not the way I remember them making it in Upper Irvington. As much as I like Jimmy Buffs I may have to stick with Dicky D's when I'm in the area. read more

I know what you're thinking, "5-stars...for a hot dog joint?". This place isn't JUST a hot-dog joint. They make a mean Italian Hot Dog Pita with potatoes fried to perfection. You can tell them to go easy too, so that it's not so overwhelming, but I opt to just through any overage on the plate and eat 'em separate with ketchup. I enjoy a good chili and that's what I use to distinguish one place from another or a stand-out hot-dog spot. Jimmy invented the Italian hot dog in Newark and the site is still there. He is the OG and Jimmy Buff's in Kenilworth and West Orange make it the same way to this day. Joe was at the counter serving us with great hospitality and a gentle attitude. Some places might make you feel rushed, but not here, he was great to both myself and my wife. The place looks very old fashioned and I REALLY cherish this environment.
