I've heard of White Dog Cafe before but reference was always for their original location in University City. Many of my friends live in Philly and I always hear them talking about it. To my surprised, I read that they close their University City location temporarily not too long ago due to rodent issues.
Recently, some of my friends came to visit my gf and I in the suburbs and as we were looking on yelp for a local place to eat, WDC came up! As we were narrowing down places to eat, majority ruled and we found our way to the WDC in Wayne. We had pretty big party and being that it was a last minute get together, we weren't able to make reservations obviously. Fortunately, it was still pretty early and when we called, there were still seating outside on the patio available. We were told the seating was first come, first serve and we were encouraged to arrive as soon as we could. In about 15 mins, we arrived and to our surprise, a series of tables were already put together in preparation for arrival! I was very impressed with their ability to accommodate our party despite the lack of prior notice. Some umbrellas were setup to block the sun which was nice because it was sunny and humid that day. Despite the sun being out, some clouds were in sight and there was a chance of rain in the forecast. Fearing getting rained on midway through our meal, the staff at WDC had rearranged our table and the umbrellas to cover our entire party so we wouldn't rained on. I felt a little bad because one of the gentleman didn't seem to happy about our request but I was appreciative of his efforts. The manager shortly came over to make sure our party was satisfactorily seated and settled in.
Being a first-timer at WDC, our waitress Jessica was very nice in explaining the menu and offering me suggestions. She even shared some of her makeup secrets! Having a love for raw oysters, I ordered the New England oysters that came with a kiwi-type relish. It was very refreshing and definitely hit the spot! My gf had ordered the Kennett Square truffle mushroom soup which I have to admit was pretty tasty (I hate mushrooms btw). I was a little bummed she had finished it all when I was finished with my oysters and had wanted a second tasting of her soup. HAHA. That in itself should tell you how delicious the soup was.
For my main course, I had ordered the Rhode Island Swordfish. I'm a big fan of seafood and am always on the lookout for nice fish dishes. My entree was nicely portioned and aided a very delicate yet flavorful bite every time! The pine nuts offered just the perfect balance of nutty-ness to the fish with a nice contrasting texture. The truffle Parmesan fries were also really delicious. Though I wish the fries were served laid out instead of in a paper holder as the seasonings and flavors aren't evenly distributed.
Overall, everyone in our party was satisfied with their meal and with our dining experience. One thing about the whole meal definitely stood out to me and is something I'm always looking for and wish every restaurant could do as well as WDC had did. We had 9 in our party and our entrees had all arrived together at the same time. Yea, ok, that's expected. And since Jessica couldn't carry all of our entrees at one time by herself, the other wait staff had helped her. Yea, ok, no surprise here either. But what made it really surprising for me was despite there being a couple servers bring us our meals, each server knew exactly who had what entree without even asking us! One waitress in one hand an entree that went to one person and another entree in the other hand at the opposite end of the table and knew exactly where it was suppose to go. Yea, they must have some sort of system going on and many restaurants do this. However, the attention to detail and the ability of the restaurant staff to accommodate to the level that they did really impressed me! The food was very good but the service provided in my opinion is what always completes the whole dining experience and puts the little cherry on top.
My first dining experience as the WDC in Wayne was from beginning to end superb and I really can't find anything to complain about. The manager came out a few times to make sure we were all doing okay which I noted and appreciated. WDC has quickly been one of my new favorite places to eat and I will be back to try some brunch soon! read more
