When Di Bruno Bros. Cheese Shop made its 1939 debut in a humble 600-square-foot space in Philadelphia's Italian Market, its owners could hardly have foreseen that their descendants would not only be presiding over a fleet of gourmet enterprises in the greater Philadelphia area, but would also become leaders in the world of specialty foods via their online sales. Recently, I paid a call at their newest outpost on Philly's Main Line. Located in the Strafford Shopping Center just a few steps from the Amish Farmers' Market, the Wayne store opened its doors in 2021. As a restaurant reviewer and food & wine writer, my chief focus, of course, was upon the charming little Alimentari Bar/Café. Here, smack dab in the middle of all that foodie hustle and bustle, you can experience a moment of respite and order a creative cocktail to accompany your luncheon or as an afternoon pick-me-up. A Negroni or Boulvardier (Bluecoat Gin/Redemption Bourbon, respectively, Campari, Iris Dorado Vermouth) or, perhaps, a Vesper (Bluecoat Gin, Stateside Vodka, Lillet Blanc), also known as the Vesper Martini. Erroneously thought to have been invented by author Ian Fleming for his iconic British secret agent, James Bond, the cocktail first appeared in Fleming's Casino Royale, which was published in 1953, and named for the fictional double agent and Bond love-interest Vesper Lynd. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of wines by the glass/bottle, as well as several interesting brews. The Italian comfort food headlines "Di Bruno Bros. products at every turn," with categories such as Formaggi & Salumi, Soup & Salads, Sandwiches, Pizza Alla Romana, Plates, Alimentari Focaccia, and Dolci. Cheese is obviously big here, so the Monger's Greatest Hits - featuring Fromage d'Affinois, Alex, Pantaleo, black lava cashews, fig & acacia jam, honeycomb, house-made focaccia, seasonal fruit, and crostini - would definitely be a way to go. My dining partner chose a slightly different route with her House of Grilled Cheese sandwich (pictured), which featured Reading Raclette, Taleggio, butter brioche and also a bowl of incredibly delicious San Marzano tomato soup. Another sandwich you might consider - highly recommended by a friend - is the Balsamic Chicken. Sequestered between two slices of toasted ciabatta, the moist marinated breast is aided and abetted by Caciocavallo cheese, roasted red peppers, arugula, basil, slathered with roasted garlic aioli, and accompanied by house-made potato chips. The Soup & Salad category included the aforementioned tomato soup and items such as Summer Panzanella, Di Bruno Bros. Caesar, and an interesting combo of Burrata & Brussels Sprouts set on a pillow of toasted rustic bread flooded with a Medjool date sauce. Interesting... and the sprouts were done to a turn, but the sauce was very, very (almost offputtingly) sweet. The Plates definitely hold some solid possibilities: House-Made Meatballs, for instance, or Roasted Branzino. But the two pasta dishes are particularly noteworthy... The Cacio E Pepe is basically spaghetti simply seasoned with cheese & pepper. In this case, the cheeses are pecorino Romano and parmigiano Reggiano. But the pepper is quite special. Tellicherry peppercorns are considered a highly prized variety of black pepper due to their complex flavors, which include woodsy and citrus notes. And for those who prefer their pasta with a tad more zip, the Spicy Sausage Rigatoni (pictured) - fennel sausage swimming in a savory tomato ragù, sprinkled with parmigiano Reggiano, and topped with rich & creamy Stracciarella cheese - is equally satisfying. Dolci, "sweets," are somewhat limited, but still worth considering... The Seasonal Gelato & Sorbetto are locally sourced from the Fiore Restaurant. For purists, the Affogato may be just the ticket. Traditionally known as Affogato al Caffè, this coffee-based dessert usually takes the form of a scoop of plain milk-flavored or vanilla gelato or ice cream "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso. The third option is the Chocolate Budino, an Italian pudding made from a milk & egg custard thickened with cornstarch. While similar to American puddings and custards, Budino has a richer, eggier texture, somewhat akin to Mexican flan... On the other hand, their pastry department (pictured) is just a few steps away. Recently visited the cafe again. The fried Calamari was AWEFUL! Barely warm, dry, overly breaded. Told the server when she asked how the meal was and she could have cared less. Friend had the pesto faccacio which was delicious except that the pesto was sweet which is sooo bizarre. read more

Pretty cool place. I had a gift card to use so picked up some goodies to try. Some stuff was a bit overpriced and others not so much. The Korean wings were pricey (most wings are!) - $17 for 12 - but my husband really liked them. The chicken salad was also pricey - $15 a pound - it is good though, but the larger chunks of chicken in it were dry. The dips and other salads were all quite good. The Buffalo chicken dip is the best I've ever had - not a lot of chicken in it, but that is what I liked about it. The caramelized onion and gruyere dip was also fabulous. Loved the potato salad and the farro and butternut squash salad. I would definitely go back for the salads and dips - they were really that good. read more

I ordered a cup of coffee and it was pretty cold so I gave the cup to the barista saying that the coffee was cold. Instead of offering to brew a fresh cup, he used the milk frother to warm up the coffee in the cup and gave it back to me. I have never experienced such a bad service! What a shame this place is. I was looking for a place to grab a sandwich for lunch so I thought DiBrunos would be a great option. I called to see if I could place an order for pickup. After being on hold for about 5 minutes I was told the kitchen staff refused to accept my order. I just wanted a turkey sandwich. I'm confused what the point of this place is. Do they not make food? Why would the kitchen staff say no to doing their job? Why are they even there? Does the management know the staff is refusing to work? This is on the heels of my family and I going for a sit down lunch a couple of months ago when nobody even came over to take our order. We were completely ignored and finally just got up and left, even after someone asked if we were taken care of. Why ask us and then completely ignore us afterwards? Like it's counterparts in Philly and elsewhere, Di Bruno Bros. is part market, part cafe, part wine store, part bakery, part bar, part take out. A lot of great options here warm dishes such as pastas, meats, chicken parm, meatballs, fish, etc. I recommend the Pasta Carmella for sharing. It's a cheesy pasta dish with a kick and really hits the spot. The deli area features delicious sandwiches, fresh cheeses, veggies, salads and more. You can pick up supplies, or sit down and have your charcuterie experience in the seating area. I love grabbing some Crostini crackers with a good cheese from the deli section, or otherwise love their sandwiches paired with a nice green salad or potato salad. The seating area is located right near a bar where you can enjoy a cocktail or mixed drink. The nearby cafe offers coffee, teas and light baked goods, in addition to those available in the store. The wine section has some unique bottles that aren't as commonly found in Chester County, but you pay a premium. For example, some labels are a good 30-50% higher than you can find elsewhere, albeit not always immediately nearby. I don't mind paying for the convenience, but going from $80 to $120 for the same bottle can be a bit much. During peak times the place can get a little crowded, with seating at a bar in premium. During off-peak, it can be very relaxing a chill. The lunch crowd begins to break the further into the afternoon you go. I find this is the best way to enjoy your visit to Di Bruno Bros. Consider stopping by for brunch, or in the mid-afternoon. Admittedly this location could probably use a little more staff training. On several occasions I've had staff slap the wrong receipt on a food item (always more expensive) and I've had to have it corrected so I didn't overpay. It can also be hard to get the attention of someone behind the counter if you require assistance. Everyone is helpful, but there's always a lingering sense of disinterest at this location compared to others. Di Bruno Bros. brings together the best aspects of Italian food and drink under one roof. I'd recommend it for just about any casual dining occasion, or if you're looking to find certain ingredients and items that aren't as common in chain grocery stores. read more

Stopped by to grab lunch at Alimentari, the bar located in the center of the Di Bruno Bros farmer's market style space. My sister and I shared the Caesar Salad, Burrata Experience, and the pizza option for the daily special and the sausage options. We especially enjoyed the burrata, the cherry tomatoes were perfectly ripe! The sausage pizza was okay, but not my favorite because the broccoli rabe was too bitter and charred. The pizza of the day had peaches, whipped ricotta, prosciutto, and a balsamic glaze. I felt there was a bit too much balsamic. Both pizzas were very crisp and doughy at the same time, which is a great combo. I used some of the pizza crust to dip into the remaining burrata. The caesar salad was good, but the dressing was lighter. I prefer a creamier caesar dressing. One note is that one order of pizza is two large square (more rectangular) slices. They are very generous portions that are filling! My sister and I cut each one in half to share them. This paired with the fact that I ate burrata and salad left me unable to finish both of my portions of the pizza. I was skeptical that we had ordered enough, but everything was very filling! Other aspects of this Di Bruno Bros location that you should not miss: - A great pastry selection featuring items from Isgros! Those riccotta cookies are delicious. - The local beer selection has a great variety and you can make your own four pack. - Some of the most beautiful Olive Oil bottles I've ever seen. - The cheese selection and the ability to sample cheeses before buying them! A cute little grocery shop with a few dine in tables and a pastry bar. It's open pretty early and has a variety of items to grab and go with. We tried a pastry along with a box of fruit. Both were good. The store is clean and the staff were friendly. Would go back if we were in the area again! There is ample parking out front. Getting into and out of the shopping center is a bit tricky and dangerous - especially if you are from out of town and don't understand the setup (like us) lol. read more

Visited on a quick visit this weekend to find that the delicious crusty French bread that DiBruno was always reliable for is now floppy like a poor version of supermarket French bread. Very disappointing! Instead try the very reliable artisan bread at D'Innocenzo's Bakery in the Lancaster Market across the parking lot. Previous review for one month ago revised: It's such a shame this formerly great spot is descending into chaos. Sat at the bar with some other confused and disappointed customers. No silverware given, when it came it wasn't clean. Wait staff didn't know what they were doing or how to do it, a sign of no training. When the food came it was warm but not hot. We didn't want to send it back as we were unsure what would happen and how long it would take.. We watched as the bartender tried to tell a customer that all the beers were IPA. the customer knew better and corrected him. Used to be a go to place, since the ownership change to Shop Rite in April, it's now chaotic and people need training. It's a Philly icon that has lost its way in Wayne. read more

This is a review for the sitdown eatery inside, Bar Alimentari. My girlfriend's father was in town and excited to experience brunch here after being hyped up from my girlfriend and i previous experiences with the Salmon board and seasonal pancakes. Unfortunately for us, we learned after being sat, that Di Brunos has recently changed their brunch hours. While disappointing, it would not have left such a negative impression if the change wasn't avertised poorly. When we were told that brunch no longer extended past ten, we were confused as the menu contradicted what our server said. The menu given stated brunch started at ten in the morning so we couldn't believe brunch was only an hour. It didn't help that the waitor was not able to explain the change in policy, simply stating he was new and this is how it has always been. After a back and forth discussion and a search on the website, we discovered the change was at most a month old. We estimated this because that was our last visit for having a mid morning brunch. The biggest disappointment was that one of the crowd favorites, the Salmon board, had been eliminated entirely from the breakfast menu had we made it in time anyway. We were genuinely curious as to the sudden elmination of brunch and redesign of the breanfast menu, but our inquiries were met with apathetic shrugs. We did find one waitor who seemed willing to listen and admitted that we were not the first to complain about the changes. In summary, the marketplace is still an excellent place for picking up supplies for a gourmet meal, but for breakfast, you can do better elsewhere as much as it hurts to say. read more

We used to go to Bar Alimentari in Di Bruno Brothers all the time when it first opened. The food , drinks, and service were always on point. The folks behind the bar were friendly, knowledgeable, professional, dressed professional and always there to help. Always felt high end. We hadn't been in a while (kids sports, travel, etc.), so we went a few weeks back on a weeknight when my husband got back into town. The menu seemed to have changed, there was only one server, who by the way wasn't super outgoing or expedient, and the bar closed earlier than we remembered. A quite lackluster experience. A few days later (weekend) I suggested we go back for lunch, thinking the experience we had was just maybe an off day, but it was even worse. Let me start off by saying there were two people behind the bar for the restaurant. Maybe five or six folks at other areas for food service, one at the register. The Bar had maybe 4 parties including us. Was relatively quiet overall and pretty dead in the store. Okay. So they only had their brunch menu. Super limited. I asked if at a certain time they offered their other menu. We were told they were closing shortly. It was early afternoon! We were ready to order, but there was a lag as the folks working the bar seemed more pre-occupied with cleaning and getting ready to close. . I ordered a salad and a slice of pizza. Wanted to taste some wine to order, but that seemed like a big ask where it wasn't previously. I did try one, which was meh, so just chose one blindly. Not a great wine selection or experience as before. The food took a while, which was stressful as we had limited time before the operation shut down. No relaxed adult beverage consumption for us this day. While we were waiting there was a gentleman, who was a part of a party of 4 who was there way before us, that came up to cancel their food order. Presumably because they had been waiting a while. Anywho. My slice of pizza was delivered and it was cold. I asked if they could warm it up. The waitress, who had been busy cleaning, was kind of like "Well I'm not sure but I'll take it back". My salad arrived, which I have to admit was delicious. 10 minutes later I was wondering where my slice was and my husband motioned to ask. It was about that time someone (must have realized the food wasn't back) went back to the ovens and grabbed my slice of pizza, gave it to our waitress, who gave it to me. It was completely burnt and inedible. We sat there dumbfounded that the waitress would even leave it. We quickly finished our meals as our time was about up and had to show our waitress the pizza and ask it be removed from the bill. This may seem trite, but I have to add the servers weren't dressed "matchy matchy", not even close, like they had been in previous years. I stopped by to grab a specific bottle of wine I was looking for, which a staff member in the wine area quickly helped me locate. While I was there I also checked out their cold cases and grabbed some items for a little charcuterie board for dinner. The duck prosciutto and tomato bruschetta were both tasty, but I'd skip their burrata next time. Honestly I think Trader Joe's burrata is just as good for half the price! I also stopped for a hot beverage in their cute cafe before heading home. I wish I would have seen the small "seasonal drinks" sign by the register before ordering because those sounded great. Unfortunately I only saw the larger menu board at first, but the chai I ordered was still very nice! Good spice level to it. Di Bruno is definitely on the pricey side, but if you're looking for mostly-Italian speciality items, this is the place to come. Lots of great gift potential here. We went to DiBruno bros Wayne Pa shop today. We had lunch in the cafe, Bar Alimentari. Lunch as usual was very good. The reason for 1 star is we have always used DiBruno Bros gift cards for our lunches there, but today they refused to take them. We were told the bar is no longer affiliated with DiBruno's. They are a seperate entity. They should have signs posted inside and outside stating this. We have been going there for lunch for over a year using gift cards. Today with the refusal we had to use a credit card, as they are also cashless payments only. This could have been a very embarrassing situation. Fortunately there are other DiBruno shops for us to shop in as we will no longer go to Wayne. read more

I live about 35 mins from this location. I love eating at the alimentari. When they are closed for a private event, they never post it on their website. Two different times I have traveled here for dinner and there was a note on the front door that they were closed for a private event. I spoke to 2 different employees and begged them to put it on the website so I don't drive 35 mins to find a note taped to the door. The answer was basically "that's management". Today I called first I specifically asked if the alimentari was open with no private parties. She said "yes they are serving until 6pm," which, by the way is exactly the hours they have listed on their website. We sat at the bay at 5:20pm and were told that they stopped serving at 5pm. I said I called and specially asked about the time and he said "well I don't know who you talked to". Can no one at this location get it together?? The hours are posted on the website! The store itself is nice but definitely overpriced compared to other boutique grocery stores I have been to. The South Philly location is much better. I tried the Cold Brew from the Cafe. The Nitro machine for the Cold Brew was being fixed so that was out of the question. So I got a medium Cold Brew and it tasted burnt. It was not pleasant at all. I stopped off at a local Wawa to grab creamer for a little flavor although I shouldn't have had to. I also asked for a coffee club punchcard which is a neat idea. I think it was 10 purchases and you get a free coffee, however the Barista said he didn't have anymore on them, the rest of the cards was in the office but didn't offer to get me one or assist me further. I have gone here multiple times for speciality items or quick lunches when in the area. First time having brunch and it was quite good. We had a house made Bloody Mary ($14) and an Cold Brew Negroni ($14), which had Bluecoat gin, cold brew coffee and aspide. Drinks were very good. To eat we got avocado and heirloom tomato toast with fresh bread, crispy prosciutto, a poached egg, and an everything crumble ($14). Probably the best, most elevated avocado toast I've had. The reason is gets lower stars for me is because it is on the pricier side. read more

Ok.... So, unless you live under a rock in the Philadelpiha area you know about DiBruno Brothers.... This place is truly a Philadelpiha icon. If you get the chance, go to check out their other locations in Center City and South Philly. They are all different and have their own character. I am reviewing this one because it is relatively new, has its own flair, it is excellent in its own way, and I life around the corner.... This is the place you can still go to literally get the best of everything from Italy for meats and cheeses. They have the best you can get in the area every time. They also have an awesome coffee bar here. It is just amazing coffee, seriously! The food here both pre-made and ready to eat again, the best mix of Italian and amazing whatever they have today. This store is different for me because of the cool little cafe inside, the bread, desserts and wine/beer section. They just are a class act.
