We went on a drive and ended up a top Mt. sugarloaf, after a nice time spent admiring the view we decided to have lunch and found the Whately Diner. I'm one to enjoy "old school" venues and diners make the list, however this diner was not at all what I'd hoped for. First of all it was in need of some cleaning. I'm very particular about the cleanliness of any business especially restaurants. Second the food was ok, nothing special. Now the service gets a total fail grade. The only waitress that was there, was more worried, about a conversation she was having with a male patron that was sitting at the counter, than she was of hosting, greeting, and serving the rest of the customers. When we entered, she didn't say a word to us even though she looked straight at me, so after a few seconds we sat ourselves; then when she finally came over, she only handed us the menus and asked "what to drink?" Then after some time returned to bring the drinks and take our order, but again nothing was said but a mere "what are you having?", she wrote on her pad and walked away to continue her conversation with the male patron. There was no customer service skills whatsoever, no real acknowledgement to the rest of the customers that came after we did (I was making observations after our own "dry" and "cold" experience with her). I observed another lady's reaction (same as mine, I could read her facial expressions). All in all the waitress sucked! In summary, I would understand the problem with keeping the place cleaner, due to it being in a truck rest stop, the food being "meh" but when someone gives a great service experience those things can be minimal in the overall experience. The service in this place was well below what one would or could expect. So no, I would not recommend this place. read more

I used to really enjoy stopping here but my last visit is literally the last time I will go there! Stopped by last Monday. it was a quiet morning...maybe 5 tables including us. We order and proceed to wait and wait and wait...folks that came after us came and went. 45 minutes later we get our food. Eggs -- over cooked, burnt edges and cooked in what I think was bacon grease. Soooo nasty. Toast -- cold, hard and with more charcoal on it than butter. Tea -- no idea what brand but no amount of sugar could change its cut grass flavor. Pancakes -- just really, really foul. Cooked in, you guessed it, what tasted like old bacon grease. Stuff we ordered, the bacon, came out as we were leaving! Stuff we asked to NOT get (as we wouldn't have eaten it and why waste food?) we got. My daughter and I ate 2 bites and just got grossed out. I've worked many jobs at restaurants over the years and I could find no reasonable reason for things to be so crappy...it wasn't busy, a bus load of people pulling in, power going out...nothing but apathy here folks! Geeze guys, can you care any less? I did hear all about about how much each waitress earned in tips and who were good/bad customers... yeah, maybe if you had checked on us even ONCE I might have tipped better but you apparently were too busy staring out the window to care. Filthy but friendly. This is a simple truck stop diner, where we stopped for egg sandwiches and coffee on a drive in the area. The wait staff was friendly and the food and coffee were very workable. Nothing out of the ordinary but simple truck stop food. My issue was whether the filthy bathrooms reflected a lack of care on the sanitary side in the kitchen. Can't make that leap but I always wonder about it. The sinks were dirty. The toilet was backed up. There's a single shower stall that I guess you can pay for, but it was so dirty I'd never want to. Lousiest diner I have ever been to, traveling back from NH we were hungry and decided to stop at this diner, what a big mistake should've left when we could at the very beginning when the older waitress told us she could only take drink orders first then she'll be back for the food order, with 3 tables in the place and 3 young waitresses and 3 guys in the kitchen, making food and milkshakes for themselves, I can't understand how this kind of business maintain themselves, being from NY and in the food business ourselves we know the struggles of family owned small food establishments in this environment competing against chain food stores, but in this case I applaud chain food places, service is fast and food is consistent, when you are on the road ii is the best choice, after this fiasco we will absolutely never set foot in that diner and advise anyone else, hungry travelers beware, it is lousy food and awful service read more

BAD! I am a TRUE fan of truck stop food. I've been on many a road trip, and my favorite part is always the greasy grub you can get along the way at truck stops... the Whately Diner is by far the WORST I have ever been to. In fact, I don't even think they should be allowed to call themselves a diner. The diner's club should strip them of their rights. Here's why: Went here for an early breakfast with two of my friends expecting a hearty cheap meal... boy was I ever wrong. Not only is the food overpriced, (I paid around 10 dollars for eggs, bacon, home fries, and coffee) But the homefries were pre-frozen and over cooked. My friend ordered hashbrowns, and got what might as well have been a McDonald's equivalent. Everything that wasn't egg had come out of a bag, and was disgusting. I feel that if you call yourself a Diner, you should at least be able to beat a Denny's in the quality of food. I'd go to a Denny's any day over this place... which is sad because I live right down the street. Although the hours aren't quite as convenient, I recommend the trip down to Kathy's Diner in Northampton, Sully's on Rt. 9 in Hadley, or Stables on rt 9. in Hadley. Both my car and I were in need of nourishment before turning in for the night, so after filling up the vehicle, I searched Yelp to find someplace for myself. Reviews of the Whately Diner aren't very good overall, but it was right down the street, and how bad could it be, I thought. I'll keep it simple, a tuna melt. What could go wrong? Just about everything. Flaccid fries, rock hard tomato slices, and a tuna salad that tasted fishier than it should have, and was strangely pink in color. That has since been fixed! If you want to learn more about it, look up "Whately Diner" on any search engine - you'll find a ton of blog entries and reviews about the special charm of this diner. This is a CLASSIC truck stop diner, decked out with 1950's booths and chrome. The food is barely passable. Sure, it'll fill you up, but in no way is it healthy for you. Back in the day, this used to be a real-deal diner with all-day breakfast foods and the rest of the menu serving meat and potato type meals. Unfortunately, a while back it underwent a change of ownership or management or both and they "upgraded" the menu, along with the prices. So, out went the charm of the greasy spoon pricing and in came an attempt at slightly better food, that really faltered. They still have all-day breakfast (last I checked), but the at the prices they charge, you're really paying for the locale and not the quality. So, why the 4 stars then? Because this is one of the few 24 hour spots in the area, truckers really use it, it's a perfect spot to hit the next morning after a long night out, or stumble into even on your night out. Stopped here with my daughter after a recent foliage drive and sat at the counter for the full diner experience. Are the employees aware that the kitchen can be viewed pretty well from certain seats? It appeared to be very messy(bordering on unsanitary-trash overflowing/workstation unwiped) but the worst as follows. A sweating cook obviously overwhelmed but trying his best seemed unaware his sweat was dripping all over the place including grill. Very unappetizing. My teenaged daughter refused to stay in case he cooked our food. I felt bad for him but he wasn't a young kid and should have known better. This place is what you imagine a truck stop diner to look like. It's open 24 hours and consistantly filled with both hungover college kids and grizzled truck drivers. The review below mine made some good points, but she was off on a few things. They definately still have all day breakfast and greasy spoon fare, and their prices are not bad. You'll pay for breakfast what you would at most other diners, and you get PLENTY of food for your money. It's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone, but you also get fun fact placemats, a decent juke box and a shower in the bathroom. Forget your towel? As a single mom, this is a gold mine. Excellent prices, okay food, excellent service, 2 out of three excellent's....hey that's not so bad. My son didn't want to leave, there were so many coloring books for his to read and color. He loved the smiley fries. My fried shrimp was super great and I took the rest home for another day. I was in Deerfield this past Saturday just before a snowstorm started raging. On the way out of the Yankee Candle Store, we took a wrong turn to get back on the highway, and I'm really glad we did. We spotted the bright neons of the Whately Diner and pulled in for a quick bite before the treacherous drive home. In the darkness and the snow, it looked like we'd stumbled upon an episode in the Twilight Zone. It was such a perfect diner-looking diner, so perfectly retro, like time was standing still, or like if The Shining was set in a diner. That's not a bad thing, by the way. I'm a Jersey girl...I love diners and they are few, far between, and fake here in FL. On our day in Deerfield, we were going to eat at some fancy smancy joint but my sis-in-law knew about this place and my mother and I (she's a Jersey girl too of course) said dynomite!! :) Service was very good, mother and sis enjoyed their food better than I...why order fish in a diner??? I was thinking...maybe something healthy...it was fried...why was I equating that with healthy??? Dunno but not the diner's fault. Everything else was good...great iced tea....Mom was the only one with room for dessert and was served a giant slice of Boston Cream Pie (she felt it was because they were out of stuffing to go with her turkey so she got extra mashed potatoes...I can never figure out where my love of carbs came from....) but maybe that was the normal serving. All that stainless steel, the truck stop/gas station right outside, the sketchy looking people all around, the neon sign, the jukebox at every table, and free wifi(??!!)... it all looks good, until you get up real close and personal. The pace was very busy when I walked in with my GF last Sunday. Most booths had empty dishes waiting to be bussed. We sat down at a booth where only a couple coffee mugs sitting on a couple of dollars remained. Eventually a waiter came by with a wet rag, and pushed most of the last meal onto the floor or my leg, leaving only a few greasy remainders on the table. Let's get the wifi out of the way first. Really nice idea, but the wifi signal is very, very low, and accessing it on my iPhone proved to be impossible. And I get onto wifi networks everywhere. It wasn't me. If there were accessible wifi here, i would have accessed it. I ordered two eggs over easy on corned beef hash, with home fries and an English muffin. The eggs were fine. The home fries were OK. The hash was remarkable - remarkably bad. This hash was more like salty meat paste with potatoes. Whatever meat was in this glop had been run through a few too many grinders. Not good. I gave up on trying to get some hot sauce. My gf had eggs and oatmeal and homefries. I forget what, if anything, else. She was happy with the overall experience. She loves diners. I mean, she loooves diners. I think she loves diners more than me. I know she loves them more than I... But, what just wrecked this joint for me, was trying to get a refill on coffee. Leaving a tip is easy, the service is very friendly and will (thus far) generally honor requests, such as blueberries for my french toast (when I order that). For a truck stop, clean. The Whatley Diner is just what you'd expect from a diner. Great burgers, Love their Meatloaf, and the omelette's are pretty decent as well. I never leave feeling unsatisfied. The diner offers good old fashioned comfort food and if you'd like a dessert, I'd recommend the Strawberry shortcake or a slice of pie. I'm a coffee lover and I especially love a good cup of Diner Joe. Sometimes my husband and I will just venture over for a coffee. We certainly have our favorite servers, Pamela is a fan favorite, as well as an older woman (I don't know her name, but she's been there for quote some time). Overall, a big thumbs up. I was here a few times while at an event in the area, and I came in with a sizable group each time, and mind you, not an easy group to deal with, however, we were treated so well we never wanted to leave....! Marina, Pamela, and Mindy took amazing care of us all...! Our drinks were never empty, and everything we asked for we received... a small but relaxing place with amazing staff...
