It was quarter to midnight when we pulled into the parking lot. We hadn't eaten anything in over 16 hours. We were tired and hungry. This place has truck parking! Yay! The diner was open! Yay! And it wasn't big-chain fast food or big-chain truck stop food! Yay! Ok. So maybe my standards were a little low when we went in. It was the first crisp night of the season and hot tea for me and hot Chocolate for Hubby. Lipton tea, good, asking if I want another tea bag when I ask for a refill?! It happens more than I would like, but it just goes to show how few people actually drink tea. For dinner, hubby got a bacon cheeseburger and cup of clam chowder. I ordered a bowl of French onion soup (picture below) and grilled cheese. His burger "was good" but his chowder "tasted weird". My grilled cheese really hit the spot. It was warm and melty and good. I don't remember if the menu said "Swiss cheese", she didn't ask me what kind of cheese I wanted, but that's what it was. The small side of fries were very lightly salted. The big surprise of the night was my bowl of French onion soup. A standard rimmed soup bowl (not a crock), packed with unseasoned (thank god!) salad croutons, and overlaid with slices of Swiss cheese, relying on the heat of the flavorless soup to melt it. Ramsey would have been horrified! I was horrified. I took a picture! We stayed overnight and hoped breakfast was better. They are justifiably proud of their home-made corned beef hash. And they should be. It is good. I would order it again. Their French toast is also really good. Their hash browns are very dry and bright orange. Honestly, I think it is turmeric powder. A subtle hint. Not that bad but really really dry. We will probably stop here again, but stick to corned beef hash, French toast, eggs and grilled cheese. read more

I ordered two eggs over easy, white toast "light" bacon and hash browns. The eggs were rubbery and has a metallic taste, the toast was burnt around the edges and they used margarine, not butter, the bacon tasted like it had freezer burn, the hash browns were obviously frozen pre-made, way too salty and tasted awful. Food was great, server was a horrible. You weren't greeted when you walked in, only a grunt and pointed to a booth. Server was rude, never introduced herself, was still chewing on something while taking our order. While i understand that they are short staffed (like everyone else), that is no excuse for the unprofessional attitude and lack of hospitality. This server definitely needs more training or needs to be let go from her position. We travel to NH/VT bimonthly and are always looking for good places to eat. I have lived in this area & have ate at the Whately Diner many, many times. Stopped going there several times over the years when different owners took over & the quality of food went downhill, along with the cleanly, and service. It is once again back on the Top of my list. A couple weeks ago one evening I stopped in & had a Great Mushroom Burger!!! Great Price & toasting the buns adds more flavor to it. Why go to those fast food place & pay almost the same price & get those very thin burgers they serve on stale rolls. I went there today about 2pm for another Mushroom Burger& it was just as good. My only complaint was it was NOT very busy. The only waitress working was too busy texting on her phone instead of paying attention to her customers needs. I had to ask her 3 times for a lemon for my iced tea. She never did the 2 minute check after my food was delivered. Forget about getting a refill. If I knew her cell # maybe I could of texted her about getting a refill. Dropped off my bill without asking how everything was or if I wanted any dessert. Never said Thank You when I paid my bill. I usually tip 20% for good service but not today. The food may be Great but poor service can keep customer from returning. Turn the cell phones off when you are on the clock & pay attention to your customers. You'll get better tips!!! read more

Asked for a cheeseburger on white bread it came on a roll, asked for a blt with cheese , the bacon was lacking and there was no cheese. The macaroni and cheese was tasteless. Asked for 3 eggs over medium got them over easy , with cold French toast. And the eggs were cold. The sprite was just carbonated water with no sprite syrup. Only thing worse than the food was the extremely rude older blonde waitress. Her service was bad and when problems with food were mentioned she rudely said didn't you read the sign on the door? It's not meant for localvores; it's not a foodie destination; it's not a hip "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" place. They serve pancakes with little tubs of Sysco-brand margarine and maple-flavored syrup (note that I did not write maple syrup). It's also not clean. Sometimes that's a subjective comment based on one's personal standards. But my one-year old kept trying to pick gum off the underside of the table from her highchair, and there was plenty to choose from! If you like it, you like it. I didn't. It's cheap, and you get what you pay for. If Plato had some blueberry pancakes at the Whately Diner, I suspect he'd rethink his "Ideals" of an American Diner. read more

This is the second time I happened on this classic diner. A truck-stop eatery, complete with showers in the bathroom. Both experiences here were good. The food was good - even with one traveling companions special order - and the prices are very reasonable. All of it is framed inside a chrome, linoleum, & vinyl diner that shows its age but, to me, is part of its charm. I never expect white glove treatment in a diner of this type, and you won't get that here either. You'll get casual service and some home made & home style deliciousness. My most recent trip here we took advantage of all-day breakfast with a pancake for my 2 yo. It was fluffy & he devoured the entire gigantic thing. My hubs went with classic franks n beans. The beans were typical canned beans, but the franks we're huge & tasted like all beef goodness. He also ate the whole plate. I opted for grilled cheese & 'hearty tomato' soup. The grilled cheese was super buttery, golden crispy & perfectly melted... In other words, it was perfect. The soup was well seasoned, hot, and a delightful companion to dip my grilled cheese in. The fries were hot & crispy. I devoured my meal, too. I wouldn't make a special trip to this place, but I certainly would stop again if I were in the area. read more

When we walked in we were greeted by their polite staff, but the restaurant was dirty and our booth smelled a bit rotten. I heard about this diner and was looking forward to going. Unfortunately it was a disappointment from the start. Please note that this had nothing to do with them being short staffed. The diner was disgusting, we literally slid to our table because the floor had a slick coating on it. I was afraid to pick my feet up because I would slip and fall. The poor waitresses were sliding from table to table. The place was packing and they were going nonstop. There was food on the floor which was obviously pushed under the table legs by a broom. The napkin dispenser had a thick layer of dust on it. My milkshake had something on the rim indicating that it wasn't washed properly. The women's bathroom was not clean at all, toilet paper on floor which looked used (I wasn't going to look closer at it to confirm) after using the bathroom I felt like using lysol or hand sanitizer on my butt. I ended up leaving because if the customer section wasn't clean then the kitchen was either equally as dirty or worse. I hope this diner gets more staff and a thorough cleaning. read more

I love diners and was excited to stop in on our way to Vermont. The service was so slow and unfriendly. The waitress had no patience and didn't even ask if we wanted a drink. We waited for 25 minutes for one omelette, 2 eggs over, one pancake and an egg sandwich. The egg sandwich had cold cheese, the toast had butter when we asked for dry and the pancake had food left from the griddle. It took another five minutes to get a fork to eat our food. Not only was the food awful, the menus were disgusting stained up pieces of paper with bits of food stuck to them, but when I ordered my steak tips rare when they came they were marinated in teriyaki sauce which the menu said nothing about and they were overcooked, the home fries were absolutely disgusting. When I complained because I physically couldn't eat the food the waitress didn't take it off the bill she gave me a side order of sausage which was ​beyond under cooked. The waitress never asked if our food was good or if we wanted refills on our coffee, and lastly the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Walking into it litterally made me gag. There was human diarrhea on the floors in the shower portion of the bathroom and the entire place smelled like human feces. If I could physically choose zero stars I would. read more

Since they're open 24/7 I will not complain too much. The majority of the menu is probably frozen food microwaved to order. My appetizer potatoes were dried out. The cheese was like plastic that's been heated, stretched and cooled. The best part of the dish were the bacon pieces and sour cream. It's like, I didn't eat it in the first 5 minutes so it was nothing more then a paper weight to me. I "might" eat here again but, it will be a hamburger and fries. We've been here before. The shower is $4 as long as you have your own towel. They will sell you a new towel but, I don't know the cost. Anywho, the ladies shower is always "just" ok. I wish they would put a fan up because I was sweating before I was completely dressed. The showers are located in the ladies and men's restroom.
