Stopped here for a late lunch while in North Vancouver. We walked in, and it has typical Western…read moredecor one would normally associate with southern BBQ. My wife and I shared a 2-meat combo. Here are my thoughts: - Beef Brisket: Good. As far as BBQ in Vancouver goes, it's above average. The meat is tender, the right amount of seasoning, but the smoke isn't noticeable. - Pulled Pork: OK. I liked that it wasn't completely shredded pulled pork, It was "chunky" so eating it felt more substantive. I didn't think it needed the extra sauce - I felt it was overpowering the meat. - Cornbread: Bad. Didn't finish it. - Fries: Good. Came out hot and fresh, and plenty of seasoning. Service was straight-forward and it checked all the boxes. Overall, the food was generally somewhat better than average when it comes to BBQ in Vancouver, but doesn't compare to the subtle complexity of the BBQ from the Southern USA. It's probably unfair to make the comparison, but I feel it's important for visitors to have the right expectations walking in.

We were told next time to make reservations if you're looking to eat in for lunch and/or dinner. Otherwise you might miss out of their fresh bbq brisket and ribs. If you're walking-in just FYI they have a limited menu. We were lucky to get a seat and also some brisket. And we also tried the smoke house burger. I wouldn't say it was the best BBQ nor what I was personally looking for. But for this local business making bbq every morning for locals and visitors a like. With bookings month in advance. With a good looking supply of spirits you'll surely have a good time. Would have love to try more items! Note to self (and you) check their social media for info and yummy photos and go make reservations!!

We ordered the platter w two sides - totally recommend the cornbread w maple butter. We also had the slaw (made without eggs so allergy me was happy w that). Unfortunately pork ribs were hard and dehydratedly jerky-fied :( The two chicken drum sticks were delish and the pulled pork somehow melted on the tongue. Husband (who used to participate in bbq cook-offs) thought the pork ribs were way overdone (yep) and the pulled pork was being carried by the bbq sauce they use. (I loved the pulled pork). More cornbread please! Enjoyed the coleslaw with its mild peppery finish. All went down quite nice a two beers. Inspired husband to return on the weekend when brisket will be served. Best to look on the side streets E of Main. The interior has a nice rustic look. I imagine they're going for the Texas feel, but can't really be sure. Staff are friendly and cheerful. No complaints. Tried the Bubba platter. The menu claims it's for 2-3 people, but it's honestly not that big. 2 people can clear it pretty easily. Comes with pork butt, pork ribs, fried chicken (almost like schnitzel), and barbacoa (slow cooked) beef. For the sides I would recommend the mac & cheese. Everything was pretty tasty. For drinks I had the sweet tea. Actually pretty refreshing. Food is tasty here, but the portions are smaller than the likes of Memphis Blues. With that said, I wouldn't mind coming back. Recommended.

We ordered their wing appetizer with their house bbq sauce and we agreed that their house bbq sauce was really toothsome and delicious. As the main we ordered their Jurassic platter which consisted of pulled pork, 2 Dino beef bones, a half rack of St. Louis ribs, 2x bbq chicken quarters, which all came with four sides of our choice: fries, Spanish rice, cheesy corn and 2 corn bread servings in muffin cups. All the meats were outstanding in their seasoning, fall off the bone ribs, including the chicken quarters which we found from other restaurants to be dry. But not here. Their fries were barely room temp, crinckly and dry, the Spanish rice was almost tasteless, the cheesy corn was very flavourful with just the right amount of spice from the jalapeños, and the corn bread muffins were warm but a bit on the sweeter side for my palate. The best corn bread I've ever had was from Memphis BBQ. We added an extra half rack of St. Louis ribs and a single bbq sausage to the platter to make we tried as many choices that they had. The Jurrasic platter was supposed for 2 but with the appetizer it easily served 3 with extras to take home! They had 3 daily choices of sausages available. I ordered their Tocino sausage which is their Filopino inspired cured sausage that also contained corn kernels inside which we found disapointing in flavour. We spoke to our waitress about the disappointment with our fries and Spanish rice and gave her our positive feedback on the bbq meats. She listened and shared our comments with the kitchen. The kitchen rewarded us with a complimentary dessert of their house made carrot cake with cream cheese icing served hot with whipping cream to share! This gesture redeemed themselves to us for the future, that they listen to their diners and would try to remedy their mistake. Verdict: 5/5 for bbq meats and 5/5 for service. The dining room was an open airy space with large windows facing the main street. The tables had enough space between each for private conversations. The room was nearly full while we there which is a positive sign of their popularity. They also sell their award winning rub and bottled bbq sauce to take home too. Reservations optional but appreciated. Cash and cards accepted.

Updated review…read more.. Still the best bbq around. Beautifully smoked. Sauced just right. Top notch cornbread. Deeply flavourful put beans, and decent corn. Loved the tap list. Loved the bourbon flights. Ambiance is great. Price point reasonable. However...... The manager (or the person I assumed was the manager) was hurried and terse. No rude or anything, just rushed. The servers were good. They had to check when I asked questions regarding vegetarian options - Which brings me to my only quibble... Hubby really wanted to go to Hog Shack for early Fathers Day. He remembered wonderful BBQ meals there in the past. One of my adult children is vegetarian though. I thought Hog Shack might be able to cobble a plate of sides for the vegetarian. We weren't expecting pulled jackfruit or pulled tofu or other options offered by places such as Slims (Vancouver) or Patina (Port Coquitlam). Our expectations were set reasonably low. My daughter ended up ordering the tater tot's, but asked that they not include the brisket topping. She ordered corn bread and a side of cooked veggies. The cooked veggies never came. The tarot tots (sans the brisket) were charged at FULL PRICE! I ended up asking for the veggies to be removed from the bill (they didn't forget to charge for it) and asked why the tater tots weren't reduced in price to reflect that no brisket was included. The manager ended up giving me a small container of brisket - which is fine, because I paid for it lol!! The gator tots came to over $23!!! Yeah - I would expect a reduction in price or the brisket on the side. I still tipped on the original bill - I wasn't expecting happy with our servers. Overall, I wasn't expecting "vegetarian friendly" but I also wasn't expecting "vegetarian hostile" Keep this in mind - if someone in your party doesn't eat meat - go to Slims or Patina. If everyone in your party is a raging carnivore - go at it at Hog Shack.
