I came across this place on my way to the Salton Sea, and it turned out to be a great stop for a cold date shake on a hot day. They have a huge variety of dates, along with helpful signs explaining the different types, which I thought was really interesting. They also sell specialty dates, like pistachio-rolled and almond-stuffed ones, along with honey, oils, teas, and a bunch of other local products. The date shake really hit the spot in the heat. We went for a ride from the north end of the Salton Sea to the south end near Brawley. Stopped by this shop to pick up a few items which is in a town called Westmorland! I'm date shake obsessed and I have no idea why. Is it because you can only get them certain places? Is it because they taste rich and wonderful without being overwhelming? Is because I will build obsessions only to use as an excuse to indulge in things that are high calorie? Probably, that. I was on my way from Yuma AZ to Moreno Valley CA, which meant a trip through El Centro, Westmoreland, and Indio Palm Springs areas. It was a new route for me to drive so everything was new and actually really interesting... I recommend ! I was at a stop sign when I saw the date shake signs and decided to stop. How fun! People were leaving the store... shakes in hand... so I went in.... It's a weird set up. You order your shakes and whatever else at the back. The front you're greeted by a weirdly appropriately dressed mannequin, and a huge tractor. I instantly felt bad that Camilla (the yelping hen) wasn't with me because she would have LOVED to sit on it and play farmer. The place is full of dates and things made with dates. They also have other interesting items, foreign foods, and candy eggplant. Which I really should have bought. A small date shake is like $5 and totally worth it. They do one of the best date shakes I've ever had! A few weeks before I stopped at Hadley's and I believe this shake is better than theirs. Which is high praise indeed. Definitely stop in if you can! We were disappointed this time with the date shakes as they were not as good as they used to be. Westmorland Date Shake's name is a lure that gets your attention since the once ubiquitous Date Shake is becoming endangered and what I've tasted at Oasis, Shields, Great Shakes in Coachella Valley is a ghost of great date shakes from the long lost 1980's and before.  WDS's Date Shake harks back to the greatness of the past. Ice cream is thick, creamy, lush with good vanilla tones. The Medjool dates used are brown sugar sweet which affords this Date Shake a toasty, caramel richness. The Medjools are perfectly ground to the right size so you can still sense the graininess of the date skin to contrast with the smooth creaminess of the ice cream.  After many years of searching for the holy grail of the perfect Date Shake, I have ended my years long search here in Westmorland.   WDS is also an emporium of Dates. There are so many varieties, not just Medjools which seem to be the most popular in the U.S. The huge varieties of dates overwhelmed me to the point that I must have looked totally bewildered to the point the manager, Mr. Ali Kassar, came over to advise me.  I told him some varieties that I liked in the past like Khadrawy & Halawy, and Mr. Kassar found a 4 pack variety of Ajwa, Barhi, Medjools, Honey dates from local Aya Farms of Brawley that he thought I may like. Also suggested Deglet as another good alternative.  Desert Olive Farms of Westmorland had two pure olive oils that peaked my Interest. Buttery and Extra Virgin. Unfortunately the bottles don't generally describe the taste or fragrance of their pure olive oils so hopefully my extra virgin will have a peppery, spiciness.  Most of the other olive oils seem to be infusions where an herb or spice sits in the olive to flavour it. I wanted mine to be the intrinsic flavour of just the pure oil.  Great selection of local honey. Mr. Kassar suggested Sage which has a mellow, slight white smoky, green herbal oily scent, amber golden color.  WDS has a faint exotic feeling of being in a Souk, an Arab market. So appropriate since dates may have originated in the Middle East & Indus Valley. I wanted local products to help the local economy to help keep local workers employed. WDS fulfilled my goals & wishes. Highly recommended. 4+ stars. read more

Should you ever find yourself in the town of Westmorland you gotta come here and and try their famous date shake. I've had my share of date shakes all throughout the California desert and I think this version ranks up there as one of my favorites. It's not as sweet as most and it's hand made every time. Some of the more popular places pre-blend their shakes and keep them chilled so they can quickly serve customers. Not here though.. One thing to remember is that this is a very thick shake...It's In-N-Out shake thick.. You'll have to let the thing liquefy a bit before you can enjoy it, unless of course you're a pro at sucking on things. - This is also an "International market" where you can purchase many middle eastern goods. - Parking lines are nonexistent. read more

As I was on my way back from Mexicali to the Coachella Valley, I finally had the time to stop by and grab a date shake. To what I thought was only going to be a small shop selling shakes, it turned out to be a whole market selling various food items. Lots of different locally grown dates, honeys and olive oils. Various middle eastern products majority being Turkish. I grabbed a date shake and some baklava, all very delicious. I also noticed their products are reasonably priced compared to the outrageous prices for dates out here at the Coachella Valley date stores. It's a good excuse for a milkshake. But I don't think it's all that special. It's very very sweet thanks to the dates. And if they ask if you want almonds, say "no", unless you like little pieces of almonds through your straw with the milkshake. Also, a medium for two people is plenty. Trust me. We got the large. We have passed by the stand, before they added this store front, for years and never stopped. Wow, were we missing out! We only drive by when camping in the Glamis dunes, and always have an RV and trailer. I finally looked on Google Maps and confirmed there is plenty of parking. You can pull through the main driveway and go around the side of the building to park. You can also park next door in the large (and unmaintained) lot with the Mexican restaurant on the street. There is an alley behind the date shop as well. While not all their boxes are labeled "organic", I trust the shop owner that they are all organic as they come from the same farm. Prices in person are WAY cheaper than online. An 11 pound box of medjools are half the price per ounce I can find anywhere else (Amazon, Whole Foods, Costco, Azure Standard, etc). The owner said his favorites are the Barhi dates. I agree! They are smooth and taste like honey. I'll have to see how these compare to the Diglet and Honey dates next time. The shakes are amazing. Expensive, but a large portion for the price. So, great prices, great product, RV parking, and amazing in-store prices on dates. read more
