Okay, move number 3 with West Side Movers! After a "financial eviction" from my COVID deal apartment it was time to move yet again. This time around I didn't price shop- I have had good experiences in the past with West Side Movers and wanted to stick with a company I have come to trust. Matt easily generated a quote based on a list of my items. COIs for my current and new building were generated within hours of booking my move. Vadim, Stevo, and the driver showed up on time just before 0800. Over the past two moves I have accumulated way too much crap...but they kept good humor throughout. Stevo masterfully disassembled and reassembled a horrific ikea bed like it was nothing! They handled my bulky sectional with ease. They got my monstrous 8 foot long credenza in the perfect spot. They took better care of my trash picked furniture than I do! Not a single item was damaged. We did end up going into overtime, but I think it was reasonable considering the sheer mass of boxes and other items...not to mention taking apart and putting back together the giant storage bed and a glass dining table. Today was my move day. Harlem to the Bronx. Scarily near the peak of the pandemic in New York City. But I had to move. A friend recommended Matt and West Side Movers. I couldn't have been more pleased. I was completely at ease considering the circumstances. They disinfect their truck; they wear gloves and masks, and they are really efficient. Their foreman, Reggie, kept reassuring me of any fears, and he and his team moved me in only five hours, right on their quote! I helped by packing almost everything, and I recommend that to save money and time, so I didn't use any supplies. It's an effort to get the boxes from U-Haul or Staples, but I saved several hundred dollars. I've assembled my bed now so I can lie in it. I was moving only 6 blocks, but I had many fine-art objects, special lamps, and several pieces of very heavy furniture. The movers expertly wrapped all items including many items that were complexly shaped. They took efficient and careful steps to ensure that every item was securely wrapped for move, whether a fragile, porcelain lamp or a fine, heavy armoire. The team of movers beautifully coordinated their efforts among themselves and giving us status of their progress as they prepared to move items. When the movers moved everything into my new apartment, every item arrived in perfect shape. They ensured that every item was correctly in place. Although my experience with these folks happened several years ago the bad taste left in my mouth survived to this day. We called West Side Movers to move us approximately 3 miles and the person who showed up to estimate our 1 bedroom apt move via an elevator building was fantastic despite his quote being three times greater than any other company we called. We chose West Side Movers despite the cost because the slick salesman did a great job convincing us they were the best. The following day four over-sized, loud, vulgar and bullying Eastern-Bloc movers showed up on time. But before they would even enter the apartment--and from the hallway--they first wanted to discuss a tip they hadn't yet earned. The smooth talking salesperson from the previous day said that their business was family owned and that we could speak with Karen the owner if anything went wrong with the move. Our moving date was on a Sunday and neither the salesperson nor Karen picked up their phones (we believed that we had the salesperson's cell) . We promptly asked the bullies to leave. They wouldn't leave trying instead to intimidate us. I had to threaten them with calling the police. Not only did we ask them to leave, we also politely asked them to stop cursing and yelling in the hallway as they were exiting the building. No sooner then they left I called another moving company that was simply divine (and one third the price)! Live and learn. read more

UPDATE: received a response from the owner and am satisfied with their response. I'm willing to give them another try if I am in the area in the future. I had a terrible experience with an employee here today. I asked about getting some picture boxes, specifically about the two piece and get responded "we call it the four piece". I said I wanted the two piece and he responded "Why dont you fu**ing listen to me! Its the four piece". Then proceeded to ramble about his job and how bad it is. I'm willing to give a better review if some follow up action is taken on this employee because I understand one employee doesnt account for the rest of the company. Overall they were EXCELLENT and everything we could've wanted from a moving company and more. Matt created a master plan to help facilitate the move- 3 truck loads, 8-9 movers and 2,15 hour days back to back. Genuinely terrible experience. I hired them for a 1 day move on 9/1 -- it took two days and wasn't finished until 9/9. (Holidays, work hours, booked already, etc) The front office and I were in touch throughout the planning to make sure everything was right. But somehow the move took 2x as long -- over 10 days -- and cost 2x more than the estimate. The crew was fabulous. They were late on the first day, which threw the estimate off even more. But the front office whiffed the estimate so badly the bill was off by 100% -- instead of a $3500 bill for a 400 sq ft apartment, I paid almost $7000. It was awful. I'd used West Side Movers in the past but this was truly a bad experience. I can't recommend this company. read more

Saying this business is unreliable is a major understatement. The day of my delivery they had yet to even send me a curtesy email about the time in which to expect them (me taking my day off work to unpack.) I emailed and called multiple times the day before and the day of inquiring about the time, but alas, not a single response. I finally got a text around noon the day of saying they'd get there around 3pm. It is currently 6:30pm and I have no boxes. I haven't even been given the respect to be notified, or to get a true response as to when they'll arrive. Now, I guess they are closed for the day since it's after 6pm. We just moved on Sunday and had a great experience with West Side Movers - I would definitely hire them again. They showed up right on time and had us moved out of our 5th floor UWS walk-up to our 3rd floor Inwood walk up in 4 1/2 hours including travel time. Hena, Koi, Jose, and Dan G are awesome. I hired West Side Movers to pack and load my belongings from an apartment in the West Village in to a POD for a long-distance move. When I called for an estimate, they were the only company that was able to come the next day - all the other companies had to schedule for the following week. I got four estimates, and theirs was the most comprehensive and detailed. On moving day, the crew called me when they were on their way, arrived on time and were friendly and efficient. I had done as much packing as I could, and hired West Side to finish what I couldn't. They listened carefully to all instructions, and they took great care with packing everything - especially several large but delicate original artworks. They worked quickly and efficiently, and interacted smoothly with the building management and the POD driver. Towards the end of the day, we were having difficulty because the POD was not quite big enough to fit all my belongings. They had to re-pack and rearrange the POD several times. I had to jettison a few items, which they took back up to my apartment, and then after lots of hard work at the end of a hard day, they fit everything in! The whole time the crew was personable and easy to work with. These guys did a great job and made the day as stress-free as possible. I've gone back and forth about this review. I decided on two stars and several bullet points. 1. Unprofessional. Other movers have a checklist for you to fill out, to see the size of the move. What I considered a small move, the foreman of our group considered medium/large. Because I didn't mention an extra table and desk. He mentioned more than once that it should be a "four man move" not a "three man move." I understand that now, and I'm sorry, but it's not my job to know the difference. Talk to your office. 2. Unprofessional (again). I asked the office a couple of times for a Certificate of Insurance -- required by every coop and condo building in the city. WSM asked me to send them a form to fill out. What? I asked my future building manager for said form and she was very curt in saying that WS was not a "fly-by-night operation" and they should have a COI on file to simply email to her. When I went BACK to WSM, this proved to be the case. But why the extra steps for the customer? 3. The movers arrived and, as I stated, the foreman was not happy at all. Listen. Who here is under more stress today? The guys who just came to work this morning, like usual, or the couple who are MOVING THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF THEIR HOME TO A COMPLETELY NEW ENVIRONMENT? Don't make me coo and cajole you. Fortunately, the two crew members weren't fazed at all, and just said, "Let's get to it." They were heroes -- older guys with Brit accents. I LOVE YOU. The foreman, again -- no. 4. The foreman ALSO was upset about two tall outside iron gates we wanted to move. I moved these in with only my girlfriend to help. We are in shape, but also we are in our 50's. The gates are from New Orleans, and are awesome. Foreman surprised me by randomly slapping on a $100 surcharge for each of them. Because, again, I didn't mention them when I had the convo with the office. (I expected the office to reply with my verbal list of furniture with "I'll email you a list form for you to fill out," but they said, "Okay! See you Monday!") I was already abashed by the foreman's unpleasantness, so I just said, "Whatever. They have to come." Minutes later, one of the crew members walked out to the truck with one of the gates under one arm. A $100 surcharge for that? Um, NO. 5. To his credit, the foreman took me aside and said "we started out on the wrong foot," which is what some people consider an apology. (Note: it is not. A real apology requires a first person pronoun, but hey.) He said he wouldn't add surcharges for the gates, after all, but that they "expect to be tipped at the end of the move." I roll my eyes as I type this. Of course, you expect to be tipped at the end of the move. And that is at my discretion. You mean you expect something close to $200 in tips. Got it. btw: you're an asshole. 6. Said foreman also seemed to think they deserved extra credit for "moving me on a holiday." I laughed and said, "Since when is the 3rd of July a holiday?" He said, "Well everyone else is taking off." The idea that some people chose to make this a three day weekend does not make it a holiday. Yeah. By now, we really don't like each other. 8. Which is probably why he didn't even move anything into the new place. He stayed at the truck and staged things -- which is fine. He did, however, mention "your WIFE" to my husband a few times. I guess he hoped my husband would roll his eyes and mutter "that BITCH." But he didn't. They moved us. They moved us with little advance notice, which I do appreciate. Nothing was lost or broken, which I also appreciate. It cost about a thousand dollars for a one bedroom move. One flight up from the garden apt (oh, that pissed him off, too. I told the office it was the ground floor, but there were stairs up to street level; apparently the office heard only "ground floor." Not my fault.) The move was accomplished. It could have been SO much more pleasant. The two crew members were awesome, and just went to work and did that impressive thing that movers do. The biggest/heaviest thing we had was sofa bed and a bed. And the rest, mostly, was street furniture. Which means it was stuff I found while I was walking my dog and managed to get home myself or by calling my husband to say, "TREASURE ALERT!" There are more professional moving companies with a better attitude. I won't hire these guys again. And WSM, if you read this, understand that this could have gone a LOT better if the OFFICE had nailed the COI and the manifest in a simple, non-subjective way. Let's all agree on what "small" means. And movers, when you arrive, know that the home you are walking into is full of stressed anxious people who have been undergoing many hurdles and expenses for the past few weeks -- and they see no end in sight. You can really make a difference. My birth family moved a dozen times as I was growing up. I STILL remember the cool guys that came and took over. Sadly, I'm sure my mother still remembers only the jerks. read more

Your explanation basically is blaming me, the client because you did not completely understand the instructions we were giving you from the beginning when you gave us an estimate. Yes we did have things moving to two different storage locations but we explained that upfront. There was no reason for the actual price to be twice the estimate. Not sure how this company is still in business. They knew address but did not do any due diligence and when they arrived saw no street parking. Also there was no elevator from street level to basement so they had to carry the stuff one flight - so job took much longer. It was tough on the moving guys. Company wanted to charge the extra percentage suggested if job runs over but it was their own doing. The building is famous so easy to find out what parking and elevator situation was. The moving guys themselves were great apart from the foreman on the day. Good tip went to him to distribute to the movers so I hope that happened. Do not use or do not move! read more

We used this company twice and although the first move was okay, the second was so negative we will not use them again. The movers showed up late and at the wrong address due to the sloppiness of the move captain. Worse, they were rude and irritable the whole day. They also broke a piece of furniture and concealed it behind a pile of boxes so we wouldn't notice the damage until after they were gone. Don't take a risk with these people. Daphne H is right, the box service from these guys is really convenient and a pretty good deal. Unfortunately, I used them for my New York to Boston move as well. I've moved around a fair amount in the past few years and this move was by far the worst. The movers showed up hours early, finding me with things still unpacked. I figured that was okay because I had alerted the company that I might need some packing services as well (which had been included in my estimate). However, the team at my door was disgruntled that they had to do any packing at all (probably about two or three boxes worth). They literally crammed things haphazardly into boxes, resulting in the destruction of a lamp, some pieces of sculpture and one of my coats. I also realized upon arriving in Boston that several pieces of my dissembled furniture had been lost, and some of my bookshelves were broken. The cost of the move was much higher than I had been quoted and the team was generally unpleasant to deal with. I would advise against West Side movers for anything beside boxes. read more

Okay, so I used them only for boxes, not moving. i saved a bundle by doing the packing myself and buying boxes from West Side. My moving company gave me an estimate if they did the packing, and i just used that written estimate and ordered the same boxes directly for myself. West Side will deliver the boxes for free over a certain amount, and you can return whatever you don't use (they'll charge you $25 to come pick them up). My estimate was short on book boxes, so i had to order more, but again, no delivery charge, and the boxes cost a lot less than my moving company was going to charge. They have paper wrap, bubble wrap, tape guns, and will help you estimate what you need. One last thing...remember...you will not BELIEVE how many boxes you will need. UNRELIABLE!!! This place can't even manage to deliver packing supplies in a timely fashion. Ordered mid day on 10/30/13 and was told order would be delivered the following AM. Noon rolls around on 10/31/13 and nothing. Called and was told delivery would be within 2 hours. 3 pm rolls around, still nothing. Called again and still no delivery by 7 pm. I spent my entire day waiting around on these chumps. I would advise that you not waste your time with this company. Due to their inability to deliver packing supplies, I would not even consider using them as my movers. Update on 11/01/13: Order still has not arrived by noon. I decided to call and cancel the entire order. I was not going to let these people waste any more of my time. This is by far the worst business I have ever dealt with here in NYC. Also, the map on their website that shows the minimum amount you must purchase in order to receive delivery is completely false. When you call they will tell you that you have to spend much more than that. Too bad I can't give negative stars... this place is not even worthy of 1 star. read more

I like that they offer free delivery and the variety of boxes. However, we ordered two boxes from them and they called me 10 minutes before the delivery time frame to let me know that they were not coming...after I took time off of work to be home for the delivery. They rescheduled the next day and were still not prompt on their delivery time frame. I called to check on the status and I informed the employee that I waited all morning for my 1-2pm delivery. He responded, "I thought your window was from 1-2. Why did you wait all morning." I said, "Are you really being this rude?" Wished I knew they weren't reliable. I appreciate that they are a small business and would consider giving them my business again in the future since I've had such a wonderful experience with them in the past.***** We used WSM about 3 years ago for a long, complicated and very involved move. They were spectacular. So much so, that whenever I heard someone was moving I sang their praises. To me it was a no brainer to use them again. We were moving from a 1br to a 2br across a courtyard-google maps put it at 348ft away. Should be fairly easy right? I got a quote over the phone, which I understood could change, but I suspected not by much since I had been detailed with the guy over the phone about exactly what we had. Fast forward to moving day. I'm 7 months pregnant and doing my best in a stressful situation. The movers show up at the top of the hour (but don't start moving until 20 mins past) and immediately act all bent out of shape that they will have to do any work at all. The driver shows up, uses my bathroom (which I don't mind)-pisses all over the seat and then rants around my apartment about this being a two day job. I'm not a mover but it's a 1br, it won't take two days. He then refused to work unless they called for another guy (while he sat in the truck) for which I WAS CHARGED. A brass and glass display cabinet of mine was broken in the move, so as a "courtesy" the Forman didn't charge me for special handling. He tallied my bill and gave my 3 different final numbers, all getting larger in size as he had forgotten things each time-all at least $600 above my initial quote. In the end I just wanted it to be over, I was pleased with two of the movers but the rest had piss poor attitudes, I didn't want to include the driver in my tip since he had been such a baby and refused to work (and again, I somehow had to pay for that?) In any event, I provided a tip of 20%-and the Forman said he "couldn't twist my arm" but that it should be more (we also ordered everyone lunch). I was floored. Are you kidding? Tipping is for great service, my husband worked as a bartender for years-he wasn't earning an hourly wage like these guys and would never have said that to a customer. It was astounding. I called the company the next day and explained the situation, they seemed genuinely unnerved by my experience and said they would have an internal meeting and call me back. I followed up about a week later after not hearing back and was told someone would be in touch, Matt I believe. Another week has passed and I'm writing this review. read more

What can I say. I haven't moved in 15 years and although I have a small apartment I have quite a few boxes and a lot more furniture to deal with. I was quoted four hours but it took five for the entire move and yes it cost me a little more. however the money was worth it. The guys were very attentive, staged things appropriately and they went above and beyond in the care of my stuff, especially in how things were wrapped. Each item was like an xmas present :). Very happy with these movers; it was a comparatively easy move between apartments in the same building, but we had a sleeper couch and king bed that required some disassembly and reassembly, which the two movers did with professionalism and care.
