I am writing this review not as a customer but as a Building Superintendent. A resident in my building was moving out and used this company. A few issues arose with the move that I ended up having to deal with After getting nowhere with the actual crew and their foreman, I called the company asking to speak to a manager within a few minutes I got a call back from Paul, who turned out to be the company owner Rather than being defensive, he was appreciative of the feedback and resolved the issue almost immediately. Sometimes things go wrong because of circumstances and a bad decision by a worker, which can cast a company in a bad light. That is what happened here. I've used man with a van in the past and the move was great and fast before but this time was the worst move I've ever had! I live in a studio with only a few belongings and the move took almost 3 hours and was charged as such for a move half a block away! I've moved around quite a bit and no move has ever taken more than 1.5 hours!! I'm in the Philly area and have used Man With A Van several times since 2020 - a move from one apartment to another, a move from one house to another, and moving several items into a storage unit. They have always worked quickly and done a great job. I've never had anything damaged or broken. There was a minor scheduling error the first time that I unused them that would have caused me to be charged more, but Paul took care of it and ensured that I was only charged the originally agreed upon rate. I booked this service over the weekend for the final items I had left after a larger move. This was a few pieces of furniture and some boxes. I explicitly asked for a 1-man option with a van. He tried to upsell to 2 people, but I was on a budget. According to their website, as long as there is valid legal parking, their 1 man will load everything up (my place had valid legal parking right in front). I paid a $200 deposit, and it was all set. After I originally submitted the web request I sent them an email clarifying all the pieces of furniture to move, and even sent them pictures of it (I couldn't do this on their web form). I said there was at least one item that needed two people, and said I would help with that one. I double-confirmed by email they were going to be ok with it, which they agreed. On the day of the move, TWO people showed up. I asked the guy and he told me it was all ok and not to worry. When the time came to pick up the bulky items I gloved up and was ready to help, but again he told me not to worry, and they got them between the two of them. There were also a bunch of extra boxes to move, most of which were completely empty (just saving them up for another move); I told the guys if those didn't fit it was fine, and to just leave them. But he again told me no problem, and he grabbed them all. Now, when everything was already loaded up and we are ready to go, the guy hands me the phone and tells me it's his boss. Then the boss tells me they are going to charge me for 2 people because of all the furniture. I said I sent them a picture, and he lies, denying having received anything (I have attached to this review the email chain, where you can clearly see the pictures I sent and his response). With an extremely thug-like attitude, he threatens me to just unload everything there on the street and go away if I don't pay for 2 people. He also says with 1 man the guy is not even supposed to load anything up, and it's just supposed to be me (another lie). So what I am supposed to do? I had to agree or they would have basically just kept my deposit and dumped my stuff on the street. Super shady company. They talked me into paying a bit more to hire 3 people instead of 2 and I was a tad skeptical but decided to trust the professionals. I'm so glad I did. We got everything out of my apartment, loaded into the truck, driven to a different borough and unloaded into my apartment in TWO HOURS! I was expecting 4 hours as the best case scenario and we somehow cut that in half. It was truly amazing. This was my first time hiring movers, and I was skeptical after some stressful and strenuous moves on my own. However, I was impressed with the ease and professionalism I experienced with Stanley and Omar from Man With a Van. Everything I packed made it to my new apartment in one piece. I saw them handle my expensive instruments and furniture carefully and with ease and precision. The whole move took less than two hours from one BK neighborhood to another. On top of that, Stanley and Omar were kind and respectful and made the move, dare I say, enjoyable. I've used Man With a Van twice now in NYC. In my previous move the service was excellent, all the guys were super friendly and they were fast and efficient. I was super happy with the move and because of this I decided to book with them again. The second move I was super disappointed to say the least. The crew that helped us was super unprepared, extremely slow and not careful. We had to pay a ridiculous amount of money for the move due to the face that the crew worked so slowly. One of them even mentioned that they were the C team. Clearly I lucked out the first time and got the A team. After my second move I would not recommend this company. If you end up with the C team like I did it will cost you so much and you'll be left disappointed and upset. read more

Very displeased with the service. First of all, they charge by the hour which I realized too late is a scam. I had a small one bedroom so I figured it wouldn't take more than a few hours. It took five. It shouldn't have. I chose them because the rate was good but with five hours of work I ended up paying more than every other service quoted me. Second, they scam you with the number of movers they provide. I paid the 3 man rate, but one guy stood outside next to the truck the whole time. So I paid for three people and got the work of two. Third, I have a number of damaged and missing items. I contacted them about my missing items, including a guitar stand I've had for 15 years, and have gotten zero response. It's really upsetting. Finally, they showed up 45 minutes late. So my advice is do not use this service. read more

It's a shame I'm forced to write this review, because the movers who showed up were good. That said, dispatch was awful. Never have I experienced, nor even heard, of a moving company that COMPLETELY FAILED TO ARRIVE the day of the move, and that's what Man With a Van did to me. They were supposed to have movers show up at 10 AM on Thursday. By the time 4 PM hit the movers were still "on their way", and by that time I had waited 6 hours surrounded by packed boxes, unable to do anything because my stuff was (obviously) packed. At that point I told them to try again tomorrow (as the moving elevator would have shut down for the day by the time they arrived), and they promised me they'll arrive 9 AM on Friday. Then, 9:30 AM Friday hit, and they still haven't arrived. I called and apparently they told the movers to arrive 10 AM Friday, as if having me wait for 23 HOURS for them to arrive wasn't bad enough already. I ended up paying full price (over $600 before tip) for a move that I could have finished 20 hours before they did if I had done it myself, forcing me to waste an entire day (that I had to take off work) by waiting. I only didn't rate 1 star because the movers who arrived were kind and efficient (and I tipped them appropriately), but the level of service here is clearly awful. read more

7/29/2020 *SINCE my review, the owner Paul has posted an incredibly racist and misogynist response to me, on Yelp telling me about his 'nasty' Korean Ex-Wife. I guess because I'm an Asian female, I triggered his PTSD and it caused him to scream at me. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. I am literally worried for my physical safety. I will be sharing this incident far and wide. 7/27/2020 The movers were polite and courteous. The Manager Michael was very helpful. The owner screamed at me and called me names on the phone. At what point is it ever ok to call a customer nasty and shrill? I booked a move with the owner Paul - letting him know I had the freight elevator in my new place from 9:30AM - 12:30PM. I have no idea how long a one bedroom move will take - so I trusted this company's expertise when they suggested a pick up window of 10AM - 12PM. The movers arrived at 9:45am. We did not arrive at the drop off location until 1pm. When the movers had to wait for the freight elevator because my scheduled time was past, I was told I would be charged $220 an hour for the wait. When I called to owner and I let him know the drop off time was late (30 min past the 12:30pm window I gave him) he said his guys arrived early and basically he's not a magical genie and able to hit my drop off window. I said I'm not a professional mover - I had no idea a one bedroom move out would take 3 hours - and I would've expected him as the expert to book an earlier pick up time when I gave him the drop off window. Paul became very sarcastic and mean, and said that I had to pay for the wait and hung up on me. When I called back he called me nasty, shrill, and a Karen and continued to scream over me. He became sarcastic and said he had other customers waiting and if he had my "permission to call me back". He literally would not let me speak. Everyone else I spoke to at this company was incredibly helpful, but I have never been screamed at so skillfully and sarcastically as Paul did to me today. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS COMPANY. read more

While scheduling my move, the office team always responded immediately, and were flexible when I ended up needing a larger truck than I had thought. Amazing customer service! Late one evening we were told that we had to move a sofa by the next morning. I called Man with a Van and was pleasantly surprised when the owner Paul answered the phone at such a late hour. He managed to fit us into his busy schedule. We were emailing and phoning until 10 pm while the paperwork and payments were completed. They showed up on time the next morning and very efficiently picked up and delivered the sofa. I can't recommend this company enough. I had used them for two other small apartment moves within NYC, but this latest move was across the country. Domingo and his crew are the way to go. They completely packed up our apartment and then helped load a POD the next day. They were very personable and extremely efficient with a one-bedroom apartment and 8x10 storage unit. We just moved in last weekend and we had absolutely ZERO broken/damaged items. I don't even think anything was scuffed. I decided to give Man with A Van a second chance cuz it was a very last minute booking. They broke the floor and after I mentioned about the damage on the floor they straight out denied it. They loaded up the truck like throwing trash into a van. Most of my furnitures were slight damaged, with some completely broken. The first time I used these guys, they were great. The second time was a disaster. They were 3.1/2 hours late due to a flat tire.. At first, I was sympathetic and understanding. I moved our crew schedules around, but then they tried to charge me an extra $83.00 after the delay and inconvenience, which affected five people in total, including being two hours late to pick up the item, seriously inconveniencing that person. What made it worse was when I contacted the company's manager, she got back to me and lied about when they dropped the single item. She wouldn't get on the phone. I had to send a timestamped text to prove the driver was 3.5 hours late, and then they got pissy and copped a seriously entitled attitude about the whole thing. I got the extra $83 back, but not without many pissy emails and a nasty attitude about it. The company management is lacking in honesty and integrity. Don't use these creeps. read more

They moved everything into the truck quickly and discussed the route with me, showing me know exactly how long it would take via google maps. They were SO FAST and wasted no time! They drove my items from Upper East Side NYC to Upstate NY in 2.5 hours. They arrived at my destination before me and arranged my things very neatly (attached below). When I contacted them they essentially said sorry about that but nothing we can do. What kind of dishonest company is this? No wonder they left in a hurry after they were done and had me sign the contract before I could test everything. Beware of using them because now I'm out 600$. Summary: Mid Feb (pre-COVID) hired MWV for quick,local Manhattan move. FOUR months later and still *hundreds or dollars* for damaged furniture costing more than the move itself. As movers left I realized they hadn't unwrapped all furniture. I found significant damage to a solid wood, designer dresser. In providing prompt photos to Paul, he agreed it was unrepairable and to compensate me for the full cost. Instead shady, dishonest business practices Instead Paul started dodging my emails and calls to follow up when reimbursement wasn't sent. Emails ignored, on the phone he alternated between aggressive accusations he's sent it, to promising to do it 'now/today/when he's back in office', but never failing to hang up l before I can even respond. Eventually just, "you need to call me later" *click* EVERY time. Emails unanswered. 1.5 months in claims he needs partial payments due to COVID while admitting I was owed well before. Meanwhile he stays open for business, confuses me for others he refunded for damaged furniture, and has at least the cash from my move that he could have refunded as temporary partial payment but wouldn't. Three months later, countless calls/emails and one partial payment (still not even cost of the move.) Other employees I spoke with were confused, apologetic, surprised I was still having to call and that he hadn't reimbursed/refunded me yet. Waited to review hoping we could resolve and I could leave a positive review, but unfortunately don't see it happening. EDIT response to owner: you yourself pointed out it wasn't repairable and offered full reimbursement (not a repairman). I accepted said offer per our emails/calls and while you never picked it up, you were welcome to. I continued to call at your instruction to "call me back later, now's not a good time etc", and because you hadn't sent reimbursement - see date of *partial* payment. Not sure what a yelp profile has anything to do with what happened but posting people's last names is a violation of Yelp and privacy. I was worried they wouldn't be able to schedule me in, but they got back to me fast saying and with a quote that was 1/3 the price of that from another moving company. The day of, my movers Jesus and Jay arrived early and ready. They were very friendly and moved my things quickly and carefully. The job took less time than I thought it would. Before I booked with them, I was thinking of doing this job myself with a friend and a rented uhaul. However, the whole process from beginning to end was so easy and affordable; I was really happy with my decision to use Man With a Van! I booked Man with a Van for a 1 bedroom move from Jersey City to Manhattan, and I could give them 5 stars alone for their flexibility in rescheduling my move the day before! They were super responsive, direct, accommodating to my requests throughout the whole process. Jesus and Jay did a great job handling the move itself. Arrived right on time, and they were fast! VALUE They got the job done and the drivers are nice - but they milked every minute for all it was worth. We were headed about 50 miles away in NJ. It's a trip that took me 50 minutes going the speed limit. It took my drivers 100 minutes. I ended up moving half of the furniture to the street myself because the drivers just stood around or sat in the truck for an extra 30 or 40 minutes. QUOTE Watch out for hidden fees. When you request a quote, you won't be given the full price. You'll be quoted a price MINUS tolls and random surcharges like "commercial vehicles entering NYC pay a surcharge of $44". I would have appreciated the full quote ahead of time. POSITIVE You can pay by credit card at the end, so if you do feel you've been cheated, you have the option to challenge them. I felt that the price was right and the drivers were good guys. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience, Leo and his crew were on time and incredibly efficient. They were easy to work with and easy going, I felt very comfortable with them. All of my items made it to my new place in one piece, Leo even tightened the legs of my dresser without me asking, which was very appreciated!
