Aside from simply forgetting, one of the reasons I haven't taken the cats I "inherited" to the vet for a few years is the fear of traveling with them. I was very happy to find a vet very nearby, and a top-rated one at that. I've heard numerous cautionary tales (no pun intended) from friends and family who feel they were taken for a ride after scheduling for simple wellness exams, and the Yelp reviews for such places support this. I found both staff and doctor at West Loop Veterinary Care to be very professional, kind, and genuinely interested in what they do. Exams were very thorough, and Dr. Gonsky was kind enough to explain to me everything he did. The practice is well laid out, the team worked like clockwork, and I venture to say that the office visit was the easiest part of the day for both beasts. West Loop Vet is the best place to go! We have been going there for almost a year with our first dog, Matilda when we took home another chihuahua, Sophie, in May. She has received the best care from them, too. Sophie brought home a cold with her from the shelter she was at. Both dogs kept passing it back forth for over two months. Dr. Gonsky and his staff took the time to help us and make time for our numerous calls and visits. Since they are both very tiny, Dr. Gonsky didn't want to give them too much antibiotics. He had a pharmacy make them the proper dosage. That was really nice! It's easy to over medicate these guys, and knowing that their doctor is on top of it makes us feel more at ease. Everyone is so great here! The vet's office is one of the only places where Matilda will behave 100% of the time. It's because everyone goes out of their way to make them feel welcome and safe. They always make sure that the girls are comfortable during every part of the exam. They also give great advice for behavior correction and pretty much anything you wonder about. I've been bringing my pup here for about 3 years and each and every visit has been amazing. From all of the top notch doctors (I've seen 4) to the techs (who are all fantastic as well) to the front desk...this is by far the best veterinary clinic I've ever been to. And that includes visits over the last 30 years to vets in OH, IL, NY and SC. Everyone is super friendly here and they all go above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect for your furry friend - you can tell they genuinely love what they do and that really can't be said for so many others. To reiterate all the other reviews, these docs really know their business, and rarely have I experienced anywhere else the genuine, effortless way they interact with my dog. I've been here so many times for off-routine visits - from random sicknesses, to eye scratches and infections, to a recent 1" ear tear from an incident with another dog...and each and every time I feel so at ease when I'm there and 100% reassured that everything's going to be fine when I leave. I don't like writing bad reviews, especially when the staff was so nice but I honestly feel like I got ripped off here. We are from out of town and didn't know where to go for a vet so we just randomly tried this place. I am used to paying around $200 for my dogs yearly check up and when we went here the bill was originally going to be over $600. They got it down a little but after taking off some medications (that I ended up finding on chewy for about $30) the total was still over $400 and we have to go back for a follow up vaccination (which we will also have to pay for). I will not be going back based on price alone. Nice facility and staff though. read more

We recently got a yellow lab puppy and began searching for a vet in Chicago. Based on Yelp reviews and location, we decided to visit Dr. Gonsky at West Loop Vet. WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID! This vet practice is as good as it gets. The facility is brand new and always spotless. The front desk staff is super-friendly and always remembers your pup. And - Dr. Gonsky is caring and professional. He has great advice for all sorts of issues (nipping, leash-training, diet recommendations, boarding recommendations, etc). Also - the office always calls to check-in on how your pet is doing after a visit. I once received a check-in call from Dr. Gonsky himself after my dog was sick. Not to be dramatic, but this was the best vet experience I've ever had, even during Covid. Cortney got me in with 24 hours notice. There was 0 wait, contact free, (which normally I'd have a panic attack over), but the vet called me immediately and was so informative and transparent about everything. Still love West Loop Vet care. Ernie's favorite vet tech Yann mentioned in my original review is no longer there, but the other vet techs are all excellent. Since writing my last review, other vets have joined the practice in addition to Dr. Gonsky. I've seen a few of them, and my experiences were always very good, but Dr. Gonsky is still Ernie's (and my) favorite, and I usually try to get in with him when we can. The reason I'm updating is my experience with Ernie's dental. It's a routine procedure that was needed, but putting a pug under anesthesia is always a bit risky. Everyone at the vet clinic when out of their way to make sure I knew Ernie was find and well cared-for. They explained all the extra precautions they take with short-nosed breeds to avoid any complications resulting from the anesthesia. I was even a little teary dropping him off just because I was so nervous, but they made it very clear that I could call to check on him as often as I wanted. At the end of the day, everything was just fine, as expected, but they never made me feel as if I was being silly or unreasonably being so worried (even though I was probably overreacting a bit). It's nice to have a vet who cares almost as much about Ernie's well being as I do. read more

We've been taking our pug Lola there since she was tiny and every time we go in there she's excited to see everyone... Which is really the opposite of how it usually is- at least with my dogs growing up they knew when they were at the dreaded vet and they were not happy about it. We have been able to get in on short notice in the case of an emergency and can usually get in within a few days when we're just coming in for a check up. Before meeting Dr. Gonsky, I didn't realize how aweful our vet was & feel so lucky that we found him (: Dr. Gonsky & the rest of the staff are extremely professional, caring & thorough. We searched out a new vet when our dog had symptoms & our vet tested, but didn't find anything wrong with him. Upon the first visit, we had answers & a plan. Dr. Gonsky was very upfront with the options & the costs in a very low pressure manor. Fortunately, he didn't even have to run all of the tests because of the order he ran them, which saved us money! Our dog went in for surgery with Dr. Gonsky & had several followup appointments with him. Before doing anything, he emailed us a full breakdown of all the charges so we would be prepared. I needed to find a new vet after moving to Chicago and I couldn't be happier with Dr. Boling and the West Loop Vet team! My cat needed a teeth cleaning and a few teeth removed. The team talked me through all of the costs on several occasions, including on her first visit up until the day of the surgery so there were no surprises there. Dr. Boling called me during her surgery and afterwards to let me know everything went smoothly. A day after the surgery she was back to normal and much happier to have had those teeth removed. My cat, like most I would imagine, absolutely hates the vet but the team there does a great job of dealing with her less than friendly demeanour when we visit. After a bad experience at another vet in the west loop, I started taking my frenchie here and am so glad I did! We've been coming here for about 2 years for everything ranging from regular shots to emergency visits and have had a great experience with everyone here. After my fur child got anxious in the crate after a procedure, they let him out to hang out in the office so he would be more comfortable and he made himself right at home. They've also let us stop by just for treats and always answered the many questions I asked via telephone and/or during appointments. We primarily saw Dr. Tierney, but also saw a few other people and we loved them all! Plus, they always call the next day to see how my fur child is doing, which I always appreciate. The hardest part about moving away from Chicago was leaving West Loop Veterinary Care. Dr. Gonsky and his staff are some of the best people in the vet care world. When we arrived in 2011, two of my cats were "difficult" patients at their previous vet. Not so when they became WLVC patients. I don't know if it's because they are a "green" practice or if it was something that my cats could sense from the personnel. I have been to West loop vet many times with my dog and over the course of the last year I have become increasingly angry/annoyed. I have noticed that they will always recommend the "safest" (most expensive) procedures, they have charges other vet offices don't include, and their prices are *significantly* higher than market rate. Below is my latest (and last) experience with West Loop Veterinary Care: I went in because my dog had eaten grapes (potentially fatal) and was told my dog needed 48 hours of IV work (standard diagnosis). What stunned me was the close to $2,000 price tag. I told them that I would take my dog to another place but to administer blood and urine exams. In the end I walked out with a $337 bill which seemed very high for just blood/urine exams. I decided to compare the procedures with 3 places nearby (called to walk them through each item on my bill) and have detailed them below. I have been to a handful of vets in Chicago and this was by far my best experience. They appeared very well staffed, with multiple technicians checking pets in simultaneously. I typically have to wait in the lobby for quite some time at other places but they were so quick! Dr. Edwards was so knowledgeable and was on the floor playing with my dog as she explained everything to me. No vet has ever done that before. Let me start off by saying the place is very clean, staff is nice, and the vet was very knowledgable. Being new to the area, and out of sheer convenience, we decided to try a nearby vet instead of going back to the Gold Coast and seeing our usual one. We made it very clear that our dog is old and unfortunately nearing the last stretch of her life and that we are just looking for some basic blood work to make sure there are no acute issues we need to worry about. We discussed this at lengths and explained that we have had all sorts of crazy workups done in the past which yielded no results and at this point she was relatively healthy and just needed a checkup. The last time she was at a vet for a big workup wasn't even that long ago (within a year and a half). The vet seemed like he absolutely understood and did a great job examining our dog and all went smoothly. Upon checkout we got stuck with a bill for over $600! It's not about the money as we love our dog and have payed that for large workups in the past, it's the fact that we made it clear we wanted basic blood work and nothing more. I work in healthcare and know that much more extravagant workups for completely uninsured human beings do not cost this much, not even close actually. So again, nice place, have nothing against it and in other circumstances would absolutely come back. But that kind of money for what was seemingly understood as a basic workup is just preposterous. And of course, as we explained past results were, the workup was almost completely normal and did not show any significant results. This is not meant to be a bad review, it's meant to warn future clients to not assume you are on the same page, no matter how clear you make your intentions. Get the facts and prices ahead of time, a mistake that is obviously mine and not the vets. Needless to say I will be traveling the extra 15 minutes further to get the exact same thing for half the price, my dog likes car rides anyways! read more

I loved this place up until my puppy got his rabies shots. The nice female vet told me that he could have some vomiting and diarrhea from the shot and if so, bring him back in. 36 hours later, after my dog puked and shat all over the house, I brought him back in as instructed. The vet I had originally talked to was not there. The male vet that was assigned to my case told me that because it was more then 24 hours since the shot that it was not what caused my puppy's illness. He then proceeded to explain the charges I would incur for my visit. Wanting my puppy to be comfortable, I regretfully left him with the vet for the day. When I got my $180 bill, it included charges that had never been explained to me. Feel taken, my boyfriend and I called to try and get the situation straightened out... we were not successful. I would advise against West Loop Veterinary Care unless you are interested in spending a lot of money and getting very little results and/or information. We have been taking our dog and cat here for normal checkups for a couple years now as it is convenient to where we live. Recently our dog had a large growth near the base of his tail that popped up quickly over the course of a couple of days. We took him in and were told that they had no idea what it was. An x-ray was recommended as well as a extracting some cells to send into the lab. We decided to do both (cost over $400) and both yielded no additional information other than the growth was not attached to bone (from the x-ray). The cells that were sent into the lab were inconclusive - they said to know for sure they would have to take another sample for an additional cost because the first sample was not good enough to analyze. After much back and forth with them we decided not to take our dog back here due to the results and the cost. Today, we took our dog to a different vet that we had used previously and already we have some much more conclusive results and were able to rule a number of things out just based on what they determined during our visit. We will never go back to West Loop and it pains me to think of all the money I wasted here over the years. read more

Yes, they may be pricier than other clinics, but you can't put a price on your pets' health! I've seen two of the veterinarians (Dr. Boling and Dr. McFadden) and both were excellent and explain everything I need to know, and more, about my "kids", and they keep in touch to make sure that everything went well even after the visit. I've had my cat for 6 years in 3 different cities and never had a problem at any vet until I came here. To keep a long story short - my cat got very hissy (which I've never seen) but instead of professionally putting the cat back in the carrier, the vet and vet tech excused themselves with the cat on the floor ready to attack me. I'm not trained in handling upset animals (they are) nor do I make it a point to scare my cat. After unsuccessfully trying to get the cat to calm down, I had to request help. A different vet tech was able to get the cat back in the carrier in less than 10 seconds and all was well... However, this should have been done in the first place. I went in wanting to know if my cat had ringworm and left with 0 idea if he does or doesn't. I wasn't charged for the visit (at my request) as my cat was barely even examined. I won't be back and would not recommend this place to any cat owners. read more

I'm totally meh about this place. It's okay. I just wasn't impressed that much by the care I got from Dr. Pappas; and the prices are quite high. You'd think a recently adopted, recently enucleated cat that managed to re-injure itself should probably go home in an e-collar, but nah, it's not a huge deal. Really? We moved to Chicago last summer from Maryland and West Loop Vet was recommended to us. We went there 2 days after we moved here and were very impressed with the level and quality of care that our dog Gavin received and their prices were right in line with what we paid for services in Maryland. The front desk staff are all fantastic, friendly and caring. Every time we bring Gavin in to the office, the staff all coming running out to greet Gavin and he loves all of them too! Unfortunately, Gavin became very ill in the fall of 2013 and needed to have an emergency splenectomy on a Friday night. Dr. Gonsky was not in the office but came in special to perform the procedure. It was touch and go with Gavin for about a week, but Drs. Gonsky and Yakker were very hands on with Gavin's care and recovery; they were available at all times of the day and night to address our concerns. It was only through their caring about Gavin as a member of our family that he pulled through and is with us today. Drs. Gonsky and Yakker and the rest of the team at West Loop Vet exceeded all of our expectations and went beyond what would have been expected. We feel that they are true heroes! We could not be more supportive of their practice and would highly recommend their services to all! read more

Words may not be able to describe what we think about Dr. Gonsky and the team at West Loop Vet, but I will make an attempt.... We will not trust anyone other than the very best of teams to look after our cats. We have been taking our two cats (Milo and Otis) to West Loop Vet since they opened. Upon walking in you feel comfortable and at ease and I was so happy to learn that they are "Green". Milo was a happy, young, 11 yr old when we first visited the clinic. For 5+ yrs they watched over him as if he belonged to them. They would greet Milo before they greeted me (and I was very ok with that). Milo started to show signs of not being healthy, he developed a slight limp on his hind leg. But other than that he was a healthy boy. When on an a visit, the doctors noticed some weight loss, and when they noticed that something did not seem right they urged me to have Milo tested. They drew blood, urine, performed an ultrasound, took x-rays, etc. What they found was that Milo had developed a form of cancer. Dr. Gonsky gave us several options (one of which was surgery, but at 17 yo, we felt we could not put Milo through that, and of course, there are never any guarantees). Dr. Gonsky agreed and we put Milo on some form of steroid medication (I can't recall the name). The prognosis was not good given Milo's age. But with the prescribed meds, the vigilant care of Dr. Gonsky, the guidance on how to feed Milo with a syringe, the constant calls from the staff, (Dr Gonsky would call as well to check in on us), the recommend acupuncture treatments, Milo stayed with us for about 6 more months than he would normally have had. The day that it got really bad, I called Dr. Gonsky's office at 5 minutes before closing. They told me to rush Milo over. The entire team waited for us. Milo was given fluids and some morphine to ease the pain. Dr. Gonsky said, "I'm so sorry Lucy, but it may be tonight or tomorrow, or the next day". Dr. Gonsky told us to be strong and what to expect when the time came. Milo passed away that very next day at 5am. I called the office at 7:30am (or as soon as the first person picked up the line) and was told to bring Milo in right away wrapped in a blanket. Once there, they escorted us to a private room, where Milo was taken away and hugs were shared. We were guided in the planning of his cremation with the care probably reserved for humans. I could not believe that this team was so invested in my Milo. They took care of everything. And the calls that came after were incredibly comforting. Weeks later I received a donation card notifying me that Dr. Gonsky had made a donation in honor of our Milo to a local Veterinary school. I could not have been more touched. I don't know how I would have survived this without Dr. Gonsky guiding me every step of the way. And a shout-out to Gold Coast Kitten Sittin' (best in the biz - ask for Jan!) for taking care of Milo while we were away at times. Several months passed and though I was still missing my Milo (and always will), we were blessed with another boy (who Jan found for us!) named Pineapple (Pina to those who know him best - that's you Dr. Gonsky and WLVC team!!) and he has joined his brother Otis and everyone at West Loop Veterinary Care Clinic! We've finally had our fill of this place... We started taking our pets to this vet after moving back to Chicago from FL a few years ago. While we've never been impressed with the value, the location was very convenient for us and for as often as we needed to visit them (we have reasonably healthy pets) we continued to go for the convenience factor. After our last couple of visits/interactions with them though, I think it is safe to say we won't be returning... We have now seen/heard enough to be rather confident that the #1 priority of West Loop Veterinary Care is to maximize profit regardless of what is in the best interest of the patient and customer. A ~$1200 feline teeth cleaning (after an estimate for ~$600), their inability to adhere to specific requests in an attempt to tack things onto the bill that we specifically declined, and their refusal to refill an Rx without a "fresh" blood test (I'm a PharmD and know that they aren't going to find anything in that blood test that's going to prevent us from giving the drug - they just want more revenue!) has been enough for us to wash our hands of this place. My dog was suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. We brought him in for the first time and got little to no answers, and ended up returning two days later with our dog in worse condition. The vet gave us a list of tests/treatment options we could do and asked us to choose what to do from the list as if we were picking off a Starbucks menu. It has already been 1 week and our dog continues to be ill. We called a different vet and got answers that were more helpful over a 3 minute phone conversation then we did coming in sending over 600$. read more
