We brought our puppy here after she decided a dryer sheet, paper towels, and who-knows-what else were acceptable snacks. Puppies are truly something else. I was extremely anxious and worried that whatever she ingested could seriously harm her. From the moment we arrived, the team was more than supportive. They saw her immediately, reassured us, and after scans confirmed she'd be okay, walked us through everything calmly and clearly. The staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely cared. They even fell in love with her, which helped ease my nerves. What truly set them apart was the post-visit care. During recovery, being able to email back and forth with the doctor including sending photos of anything questionable was a game changer. Responses were quick, thoughtful, and reassuring. It's all about the Benjamins--or Grover Clevelands--with these people. They push pet insurance, which is a finely crafted scam; I know, I went there. They are fully down with the old Hill's pet food scam. Prescribe Prescription Diet, and you have to bring the animal in to get it refilled. PROBLEM: They push KIBBLE, Hard. Kibble is poison for cats and dogs. Why not feed them Doritos every day? My animal wouldn't cooperate with the mouth exam. Their solution: "Bring her in AGAIN and we'll sedate her. THEN we'll figure out what to do." NO. We know what needs to be done. "That will be a rather large quote range." If they said it once . . . So I'm thinking they're more about money than my pet. YaThink? I mentioned the girl doesn't like air conditioning and sneezes once a week. The doctor--I think, everybody wore the same thing; did I actually see a doctor?--latches on to "respiratory problems," immediately planning full treatment for THAT. NO, NO and NO. She's in for DENTAL! I was beating my head against the wall, getting the feeling they were not listening to me. They have no credibility with me vis a vis diagnosis and these are my ANIMALS we're talking about here. They pulled the same "respiratory stuff" with two other of my cats when they had other problems. I am convinced they contributed mightily to their demises. (The Emergency vets were eminently better.) I get home 10 minutes later and WAITING FOR ME, are two emails. One was arse-covering about the shot she got, but was really an advertisement for flea, mite and worm chemicals, complete with click-throughs to their "affiliated" vendors. And a link to Hills, of course. And a link to dental products for animals, before ANY procedure happened. Fleas? She NEVER goes outside, ever! Not necessary. Then I, naturally, get ANOTHER email directing me to THEIR franchise pharmacy "service." Let's not forget the third-party email for pet insurance; where'd they get my address? It was a barrage of come-ons when my pet's plan and fate were still very much up in the air! And TODAY, I get a stern email informing me that all future credit card transactions will be charged a THREE PERCENT processing fee. In most cases, that's twice what the banks charge them. What about people with a sick animal who can ONLY use a credit card? You DING them again?! Yes, ANOTHER West Loop Vet profit-over-pets production. They walk around with portable POS terminals, so they can be quick on the draw, I guess. Now, I have used West Loop for many years, mostly for the location. But I don't take my house-confined pets to the vet very often. Only if they need something. Why get them contaminated at a vet's office? I bailed and followed the referral of my cat sitter and went to another vet. FABULOUS! Yeah, it cost me a bundle! But the doctor talked only about the animal. What it would take, how it would go and how she'd recover. Could not have gone better and she's running around like normal. It was respectful, just doctor/pet-and-owner respect and discretion. The vets and staff here are so amazing! My dog is reactive and they are always so accommodating every time we visit. They are always very gentle with her and she loves her bribe of food! They have separate entrances for dogs and cats which is neat. The prices here are also reasonable. They have been a huge help in getting our rescue her dental cleaning. They sent us home with her X-rays and explained everything that happened in great detail. They even gave us update calls throughout the procedure. More recently, our dog has been experiencing some allergies which cause her to lick her paws. West Loop Veterinary Care has given us great guidance on how to help her. Despite moving out of West Loop, we've decided to keep coming back! read more

West Loop Vet went from being my favorite, to my least favorite in a year. Sadly I had been a client there for 12 years, but over the past year I have seen a total shift with doctors leaving and their new "gentle retraint" policies. They say they care, but they don't listen to clients and they continue to recommend more and more costly test so each time I visit my bill is usually around $500-$1000. I made an appt to get thyroid re-checked and I brought in a stool sample because her stool had been runny. Right away they wanted to check her hypertension and nothing about getting a blood test for her thyroid. I told them she was scared and they may need to scruff her and allow her to bury her face because they wouldn't let me hold her (for liability which I understand) although, they way they handled her Instead allowed my cat to squirm and become more upset. They then wanted me to reschedule and give her Xanax before her next visit. How is giving drugs to relax any better than proper restraint for a scared animal? I've never seen this "gentle" way work for any scared cat. Mother cats scruff to be able to move them gently without them moving. I then got upset with the vet for not listening to me and being very condescending. Needless to say I tried talking to their Medical Director and they actually send an email terminating me from their practice. The email was actually addressed "termination of client". This was unnecessary since I already told them to send me my pets records so I can transfer to a different vet. If you like passive aggressive people who don't listen to your pets needs. Cannot say enough good things about West Loop Vet - I've been taking my puppy (Cassian) here since the first day I got him and they sent me home was a cute "puppy starter" kit. They made his early appointments to the vet stress free and Cassian looked forward to all his vaccine appointments. Now he literally tries to bolt into the doors when we walk past the clinic. All the staff are super sweet and caring with my pup and I can tell they truly care about their furry patients! After each appointment they always send a follow up email to make sure Cassian is feeling okay and has no allergic reactions etc. I also think it's very considerate that they have separate entrances for cat and dog owners so neither stress each other out - just thoughtful planning to minimize any stress related to the vet visit! read more

Had always felt it was overpriced, but it was convenient and walkable so I accepted. Until I got a quote for dental cleaning that seemed way too high and priced around. West Loop Vet should be ashamed. Anyone going here should line their invoices up against other vets in the area. Some of the prices of vaccines alone are more than double. For a Bordatella vaccine, they're charging more for a 6 month vaccine than other vets do for the full year version. Luckily, there's a new vet opening in West Loop this year. And even if there wasn't, you can hire a limo service to drive your pet to another vet and still come out ahead. I only priced these out against one other vet. It took no effort to save hundreds of dollars a year on routine recurring services. Every time I was there I felt pressured to run more tests and take more charges. I tried to make an appointment for my dog at West Loop Vet, and when I called back to confirm the appointment and I told them it was for evaluation of anxiety, they responded that they actually couldn't give me an appointment and that they aren't accepting new patients. Meanwhile they have a booth at the farmer's market every weekend soliciting new patients. Make of that information what you will. I found a different vet in West Loop that has been over-the-top accommodating and has gotten our dog adjusted and healthy on anxiety medication, helping her to thrive better. She is now comfortable around children and taller men. So things worked out for our doggo in the end. read more

As long as I live in Chicago, I will be taking my cats to this vet. I recently moved out of downtown up to Lincoln Park but I still return and bring my kitties here when they need care. I'm so sad that we're moving with our cat to a new city because this is by far the most wonderful vet clinic we have been lucky to find. So cat-friendly and -knowledgeable, every doctor we ever interacted with is kind, patient, great at explaining things, and always clearly cares deeply for the animals. In particular, Dr. Pingue is perhaps the greatest vet ever. She cared for one of our cats who sadly passed away from cancer this year, and there is nobody I'd rather have had caring for our sweet girl through it all -- it was always evident how much she cared and how thoughtful and thorough she was. I always felt like Penny was in the best hands possible. I have reached the point where I will reconsider going back. Pet owners beware and please advocate for your animal, but also your finances. We went in for a mild allergies and they ran us a tab of almost $700. The vet came off horribly uneducated, claiming he didn't know if it was allergies or chemical burns and tried to prescribe oral medication, topical medication and a soak asking us to come back again in two weeks only to charge us more potentially. They need to be asking for consent before providing any service. They start at the appointment with a physical exam that cost $115 without asking my permission. There was an entire charge on my invoice for miscellaneous medication, they wanted to charge me for a cone without asking. Review your invoice before they get your signature. I have an out-of-state family member who owns her own and she is appalled at the up charge being used here.. We have to protect our pets, but please speak up for yourself. read more

Here's the kicker it takes forever to get in and you can't even go In you have to sit in your car and zoom in. Staff is typically snobby as well . Please save yourself the time and energy and go somewhere else that actually cares about the animals , Shame on this facility for not even giving her enough food for a week until she can be seen . Even a human would be given enough to get by until they can see a doc , this place is just unbelievable. This is why Chicago shelters are over flowing with vets like this only caring about profits . Shame shame on this place Doesn't allow for me to reply to the rubber stamp feedback below , respectfully if you cared about animals you would allow for enough food to get by until the visit and your receptionist would have a shred of compassion ! I don't recommend coming here with your cat. It took me a long time to write this review because I've been processing, and I'm sorry for anyone that has taken their cat there in the meantime. I have the stories of two cats to tell. First: I had an elderly cat of 20 years, who had been with me most of my life. He was doing very very well for his age (as attested to by nearly every vet he visited), but in his old age he was getting heart disease. My chief goal at this time was to assess the decline in his quality of life and opt for at-home euthanasia when the time was right. It was getting close to the right time, but it wasn't yet. He ended up passing, but not how or why he should have, and I believe the horribleness of his death is because of West Loop Vet. Firstly, he was having some skin itching, and they somehow determined that it was allergies and gave him steroids for it--a bonkers decision for an elderly cat with heart disease, I know now (and looking back, I don't even think that they did a skin culture to see if he just needed a topical antifungal or antibiotic...). Because they gave him steroids, he very quickly started developing a lot of fluid in his lungs, and was having trouble breathing. I brought him back, and they assessed that he needed a shot of a diuretic (or something similar) to help clear his lungs. They removed him from my care and brought him to the back room to man-handle him and administer his shots, all without me. The incredible stress of that situation, paired with his rapidly progressed heart disease made him unable to breathe, in a panic. They tried to put him on oxygen, but they again did it without me and made it as stressful as they could for him, which was the absolute last thing that he needed. He needed to be given a chance to calm down, with me, to administer oxygen and de-escalate the situation, so that we could manage euthanasia and he could go in peace. But they did none of that, and it only got worse from there. They made me leave him AGAIN, with strangers grabbing him and forcing an oxygen mask to his face while he screamed in a clear panic. They put me in a separate room they use for euthanasia and left me there without him for an incredible amount of time. Instead of trusting me to be with him, and letting me calm him, they separated us at the most critical moment, and I still don't know what it is they were doing. And I feel so guilty for not demanding that they do better. When they finally brought him to the euthanasia room, he was laying down, limp from whatever they did behind closed doors. And when it finally came time to administer the euthanasia drug... They stuck him over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over... They couldn't get it, and eventually they gave up and stuck it straight into his poor little heart. Every day, I wish I wouldn't have ever taken him to that place for his itchy skin. Second: Soon after, I was out of town burying my cat in the yard where we both grew up. When I was out of town, my partner's 5-year-old cat started having trouble eating, sneezing, and just generally seemed like she was in pain. He took her here, for some reason I will never understand. They did a brief exam, and concluded that she "probably just has allergies." My partner called me and told me that he had chosen to go here of all places (to get in quickly, he said), and what they had said. I told him that he needs to get a second opinion, so he went and got one... And within seconds they IMMEDIATELY found an oronasal fistula that West Loop Vet had missed and deemed "probably allergies." I can't speak to their ability with dogs, but with cats my experience has been awful. And the way they disrespected the importance and power of the bond between my cat and I doesn't speak well of them in general. I wish I would never have found them. read more

I'd like to thank dr Gonsky for his compassionate way he treated my beautiful black Victoria, as she was diagnosed with a breast cancer in 2009 in a different facility. Our Victorka never met Dr Gonsky after all. But as her mom and on her behalf I can only say , she would love and appreciate dr Gonsky's experience, expertise and above all - his compassion that comes naturally to him. I'll never forget the compassion on advising us the best treatment facility for my baby. Thanks David Now I only wished my English was better ( as I'm an immigrant) to truly find the right words.. As the healing process went, the feral family came. Living in Chicago I couldnt avoid seeing the every day misery of a feral cats while the society pretends not to see it . So there came Katrina, Lucia, Mami Magdalena, Prince Sofi, Babies Phillipa and Petra ( dr Gonsky named the last one) So much blessings, especially when in care of dr Gonsky. All spayed/ neutered by dr Gonsky Surgeries and concerns in between Feeling safe . Until March 2020 . I have sent an email with a photo of Magdalena's belly in concern, in early March 2020. No response until days after. Dr Gonsky was not available until July. I have been adviced dr Gonsky is training a new doctors and will be no longer available to his existing patients. Shock. In a covid time there was a 2 months waiting time to get another veterinarian by MY choice . West loop vet adviced dr What is his name.... While we were waiting to get to our #1 second choice after David Gonsky, there was no time anymore and I had to bring Mama Magdalena ( Maminenka Magdalecka my baby and the best cat and the best mama in the whole world) to the Emergency clinic Medvet on Chicago ave Forever thankful as my review has been posted already. We lost Magdalena We lost dr Gonsky I have moved my feral family to suburbs since then. All of the vets, techs, and other staff are incredible. My dog, Arugula, and I have been going to them for the past year to get him set up as a puppy and for one sick visit. We have worked with a number of folks through our time, and not a single one is anything but wonderful. My dog LOVES going to the vet because they treat him so well, even after things that may be considered unpleasant like getting blood work done or his neuter surgery. During COVID, their protocols have been so incredibly safe. They have the humans wait outside and will video call or regular call (your choice) you while they are doing their exam on your pup. Whenever I have had questions, the team follows up quickly. I've been able to schedule appointments with ease, and for time sensitive issues, get in very quickly. They are also aware of costs, and will explain options and when possible, provide quotes in advance so you aren't shocked by the price. While the rates may be a little higher than other options, they really go the extra mile and are absolutely worth the price to make sure your best friend is as healthy as possible. I appreciate how thorough and thoughtful they are with their care, and it is so evident that every single person who works there LOVES animals and wants the best for them. read more

This review is specifically for Dr.Matthew Kuchay and for the fantastic technician, Teagan, who joined him for both of my dog's appointments. My dog, Major, is anxious and reactive at vet offices, to the point of being almost impossible to administer treatments to or do basic check-ups. We usually use home vet services and sedatives. He was behind on his vaccines and had a cough, however, and we couldn't find availability with any at-home vets. Dr.Kuchay and his technician treated Major's cough and did their best to at least get his most important vaccine in him. They were open to my suggestions as to how to keep Major as calm as possible by letting me hold him during exam/vaccine, and involving me in taking his temp. Dr.Kuchay suggested we use a soft fabric muzzle, which I put on my dog, and which was a first for him, but that allowed use to get the most success out of our appointment. Dr.Kuchay did a fantastic job with a very difficult patient. Veterinary staff already experience a high level of stress and professional burnout; add to that the COVID pandemic and the drastic increase in demand for their services due to new pet ownership, and they really deserve all of the patience and gratitude that us pet owners can give. During our two appointments with West Loop Vet Care, my other observations are that the facility was clean and the administrative staff were professional. We are moving from Chicago soon and won't need their services anymore but I do highly recommend them. read more

We began visiting West Loop Vet when our previous vet retired. The care and communication from them has been fantastic since the beginning. However, I'm writing this review as a caution to all clients or potential clients. My dog was recently injured, and we brought her in and the doctor was fantastic. He prescribed us antibiotics that our previous dog had taken a few times before, so I had a general idea of the cost. West Loop Vet does not automatically provide us with an itemized invoice before charging us - they just ask if we want to use the card on file. This is probably my carelessness, but trusting them, I said yes, and did not receive the itemized invoice for review until I arrived home. At that point, I saw that we had been charged over $500 for 20 pills that in the past had cost at the most $40. I emailed West Loop Vet to confirm the charge was correct. I received a very terse response immediately confirming that the bill was correct. After doing further research, I began to suspect we had been charged for the wrong version of the antibiotics. Luckily, the person responding to my email this time took the time to review the situation and confirmed that we had been overcharged ($520!). Now, I can excuse one off mistakes, but in our limited visits to this vet, at a previous visit we were charged almost $300 for a product we did not request or receive. Same situation, I noticed when my partner returned home with our dog and had to take steps to rectify the situation. So, if you go to West Loop Vet, REVIEW YOUR INVOICES. Also, I would hope that staff take more care in the future to review customer questions, rather than hastily dismiss invoice questions, potentially costing clients hundreds of dollars. Unfortunately, we have lost our trust in this clinic, and will be looking elsewhere for vet services. read more

We could not be happier with West Loop Veterinary Care! We got a new puppy back in November 2019 and did a lot of research on vets in our area prior to bringing him anywhere for his routine check ups and vaccines. We settled on West Loop Veterinary Care because of their great reviews and proximity to our home, and we've just been ecstatic with the services they provide. Every single person we've interacted with, from the individuals working at reception, to the veterinary technicians, to the veterinarians themselves could not be friendlier, kinder, or more willing to go above and beyond to ensure that our puppy is well cared for. We always walk into every appointment with a million questions (sorry, guys!) and, without fail, the vets and vet technicians take the time to patiently sit with us and make sure they thoroughly answer every last one. They have also very kindly answered a number of questions for us on the phone, no matter how big or small the issue. They've provided us with immense calm as new dog owners, and we are beyond grateful for how they've helped us along and put us at ease. Even with all the chaos and difficulty caused by the current national emergency with Covid-19, West Loop Veterinary Care has continued to provide amazing care for our pup. We had his neutering scheduled for mid-March long before the Illinois Stay at Home order was issued, and West Loop Veterinary Care not only kept the appointment but did everything in their power to ensure that social distancing guidelines were followed, that we were still provided all the information we needed, and that we were given an opportunity to ask questions before and after the surgery. We got a call right away after the procedure to let us know everything went well, and when we picked up our puppy he was so calm and happy it was as if he'd never had surgery! His incision healed perfectly and his recovery was incredibly quick. Our puppy tries to head in the door every time we pass West Loop Veterinary Care on our walks, which speaks volumes about how comfortable he's made to feel while there. I was very anxious about not being able to go inside the facility with our pup when he had his neutering (due to the safety measures put in place to adhere to social distancing guidelines), and the fact that he happily went inside, even without us tagging along, was a tremendous help in easing this angst. I never imagined we'd have a puppy who viewed the vet as a fun place to go! It's so clear that every person working at West Loop Veterinary Care truly loves animals and cares deeply about helping the pets entrusted to them. This place literally only cares about getting the most money out of you. They'll sell you all types of up priced stuff that you can get at a regular drug store. Called to see if the doctor would prescribe my dog pain medication after I took her to get spayed at a low-cost clinic and the woman on the phone basically said "no that's what you paid for." Super rude and not at all compassionate about my dog possibly being in pain bc I didn't want to spend $300+ to get her spayed with them. Then she said they've only seen her once as if she's a lesser patient when I've only owned her for 2 months... literally an unprofessional mess. A complete joke. Never coming back here. read more

West loop Vet: a real degradation of primary care. Terrible long term care, expensive and no care. As background, my pup is a small Maltipoo that is 11 years young; west loop and Dr Gonsky and Dr Bowling have been his primaries for about 7-8 years. Over the last few years, he's been bounced around with other newer doctors there. As background, I have atleast 10-12 visits a year for reasons ranging from allergies, allergy shots, ear infections, torn acl consults, paw infections, GI Issues, amongst others. (He's such a happy pup:)) Recently, he got prescribed a new fungal antibiotic for an ongoing paw infection. It's caused terrible GI issues and now his kidney function is impaired (from my piecing of this together) -- this my fifth visit to the ER in 3 weeks and consults across various doctors I have pleaded with the front desk at west loop for dr gonsky to review his files, instead of new doctors. Firstly, I have had a hard time getting a call back and have had to call several times. Now my pup is admitted and on IV. His vitals and blood work and CBC are improving, thank God, but it's a road to recovery. And frankly, I am still not certain of primary causes (as kidney is secondary). I imagine that someone that knows his history and is medically educated should be able to help me figure this out. All this while, I still don't have checks-ins or a trusted voice from my primary, which is west loop. This is so sad as I have paid this place thousands of dollars over the last 11 years; more importantly I'm disheartened that this is the level of care for an ongoing patient. Their service is good but I really didn't like the pricing. I asked for a detailed pricing on a surgical procedure (neuter) for my pet they couldn't give it to me. All they can say is it's a package and that's the least we can break it down and least they can break it down to was $600. I just don't like the lack of transparency in billing. I am writing here because I owe Dr. Gonsky a 5-star review. There are a lot of great things to talk about Dr Gonsky and his practice. While I wish no more pet parents would experience what I had gone through, I really appreciate the support he provided throughout the process. As a doctor and owner, he has been doing above and beyond the normal responsibilities. Long story short, I brought my baby Fauna to him last year in late Nov after she was suspected to have SCL vs IBD. Dr Gonsky spent a decent amount of time talking to me understanding the whole story and provided me different solutions to each scenario that Fauna could run into. He also recommended the prescription food which improved Fauna's quality of life for the last few months when I look back. Unfortunately, Fauna's condition got a lot worse out of sudden this year in March. The lockdown due to COVID-19 made everything more difficult, but Dr Gonsky managed to see Fauna, and checked in with me every week. On the last visit, Dr Gonsky helped me connect with a specialist he trusts for the advice of potential stabilization, blood transfusion, or surgery while I am on the way to the ER to not waste any time. So, cancer had spread to her bone marrow and euthanization was the only option. Dr Gonsky made it for me on a day he had a planned trip. He definitely helped me make the most difficult decision in my life and the worst experience a little bit better. I don't want to recall any memories right now but I would say his sympathy was priceless. I hope one day I will come back. read more

They took such great care of my Diva when an irresponsible pet owner let their unleashed pit just run around our neighborhood... We were panicked and traumatized and this clinic was not only so thoughtful of us- but the care for my dog was amazing. She is still in recovery, but the brave trooper is healing wonderfully. I was considering looking for a new veterinarian to care for my two dogs. My old vet was overwhelmed by Covid and I didn't feel my dogs would get the care they needed. After taking my puppy to the emergency (diarrhea and excessive water drinking) the treatment prescribed was not working and that prompted me to look for another vet to treat him. As I was searching for vets in close proximity to me, West Loop vet care came up. What I noticed right away was the excellent reviews they had and that make me feel I could trust them. I got very lucky and was able to get my puppy in to see Dr. Osborne. What I can say is the whole experience from making an appointment, to check-in, to my conversation with Dr. Osborne, to check-out was seamless and efficient. Every person I talked to was patient, kind and caring. This is an excellent clinic!! Dr. Osborne took the time to discuss Buddy's treatment, she patiently answered my questions and she did a follow-up call to check on him and discuss his test results. Following the doctors instructions, Buddy very quickly got better. I was reluctant to leave the other vet clinic because I valued the veterinarian who cared for my other older dog. But I am so happy I found West Loop. I feel confident my two dogs will get the care they need. I highly recommend this clinic. read more

5 stars. Period. Yes, it is more expensive. Welcome to the West Loop. When your dog gets free sniffs next door at Girl and the Goat, you know that means an extra $. Anyway - 5 stars. My first dog Wrigley was a patient here for the last month of her life. From the first visit when Dr Tierney got down on the floor to play with her to her final visit when Dr Yacker nodded and Bailey gave me a hug when I made the decision to let her go - they treated her with care, compassion and respect. Never rushed. Thorough and thoughtful. Many last minute visits for an IV - we always were seen right away. Calls always returned promptly. They sent the sweetest note after she passed. Then I decided to bring a crazy Jack Russell named Earl into my home and it's been nothing but a great experience. Always there helping me get him settled and clear up some infections and stuff that happens with a shelter dog. early, late, and weekend hours - for routine stuff it's great to not have to take time off work. when needed - can almost always be seen right away. the prescription service is great for bigger stuff when you don't have a car. read more

My boy Oscar got into a tussle (over a toy) with his good buddy and got bit on his neck/chest. Just one puncture wound but I was told to go have it cleaned/flushed and get him antibiotics. So, I visited West Loop Veterinary Care and saw Dr. Edwards. There is short term parking (for free with your flashers on) in front of the facility, which is a huge bonus! The front desk staff was very welcoming and contacted my vet in Galena to get his records. The facility is very clean and bright. Dr Edwards was amazing with Oscar. She is so compassionate, professional, and warm!!! They even called the next day to follow up to see how he was doing. I highly recommend anyone looking for an AWESOME Vet go see Dr. Edwards and West Loop Veterinary Care. Thank you for taking such great care of my boy, Oscar!!! read more

Nothing but positive for this place and the people who run this business. They were super patient with us and our dog. Patient is an understatement at that with our Doberman girl. They were very fair with their pricing. They were attentive, kind, and actually caring from front desk to the doctors performing surgery. This place is next level and their reputation should not be questioned. Believe what they say, pay what they ask, they are genuine, and honest about what is needed. Completely successful surgery.
