Otti was diagnosed with inflammation of the eyes, most likely irritated by ingrown eyelashes. Dr Czapor as usual gave him a thorough eye and vitals check. Prescribed eye drops with antibiotic and steroids. In just one day I see a big improvement in the redness of his eyes. CSR Claudia texted an early greeting to see how he was doing. Really appreciate that extra TLC. Thank God for Metropolitan Veterinary team. We will enjoy the holiday weekend much better now. read more

Most of my time was with a very nice who vet tech Who is probably only making slightly more than minimum wage. There is a lot going on about how Private Equity is buying out vet practices and 'corporatizing' them and my experience at this vet really exemplified this. Online appts are not accurate. Made an appt online for a sick visit- moved my schedule around for it. Got a call the next day that there was an online error and they could not accommodate me. the lady was nice but not helpful. I asked, since this was an error on their end, could they accommodate me- they said no. I work in healthcare and if we make an error in scheduling, we do everything we can to get that pt seen since we know what families do to have time to come in. She only referred me to an ER they work with- not urgent cares. I asked if the cost is different, she said she didn't know, which, she should have some sense of , if you are referring me there. We've been going to metro for the past 4ish years and we love their continuous love and care for our pet. We definitely miss Dr.Sahar so so soooo tremendously but we still receive great care from the other veterinarians in the practice. The front staff is always so kind whether you're talking to them on the phone or in person, and the techs are just as friendly and caring. The practice itself is very clean and well kept. The vets are always willing to answer all of our questions and explain things thoroughly to us. For the most part we're able to get appointments if urgently needed otherwise we've received great care/advice via phone or email. We wouldn't trust our pets health anywhere else. read more

We put our 15 year old kitten down yesterday. He's brought us so much joy and love over the last 15 years. We are still in shock and definitely in pain considering our tremendous loss. I'm taking the time out to write this today, first and foremost, because I wanted to thank the doctor and staff who took such compassionate care for us in our time of need. Our kitty had been sick for a while, he's had surgery (at a prior location) but he just wasn't improving overall and his health continued to decline. Since being seen at this location, he had a better quality of life for his last year despite his fragility. Yesterday we had to rush him in and we were given the news that he was in pretty critical condition and we just didn't want to subject him to the long road of "let's see if this will make him better" test, procedures, diet changes, possible chemo ect..... for a kitty who had been really tough, but it was clearly his time. I know as a pet owner there are things I could have done differently to extend his life starting from when he was young but I am grateful that we got to say our goodbyes with him till his last heartbeat and breath, comfortably, and with a very clear explanation of what to expect with the euthanasia process. Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of your furry loved one and I'm forever grateful for the compassion this clinic showed us. read more

Compassionate, loving and caring staff. The doctors diagnosed my King Charles Cavalier, Ella's condition in 15 mins after tests performed. I took her to 2 other hospitals who claimed to take X-rays and wanted to euthanize her. I asked for her test results and X-rays to take with me. The vet told me that where I take her would not need them. Since, they will perform their own tests. Metro Vet staff called the Vet hospital and had him on speaker and he was yelling and denying his actions. They asked him to forward the photos over and he hung up. He charged for services he never rendered. My baby would have died without the excellent emergency diagnosis and surgery. She has passed since then. I took my dog in Monday to have testing done (almost $400) . That same day they called me to let me know, they forgot to get a urine sample. So I brought him back in. On Wednesday they encouraged me to bring him in to get his blood pressure taken, why wasn't this done Monday either time I took him in? And to ask if I brought a stool sample, that we had taken in 4-5 hours before. Another $64 for a technician visit for them to check his blood pressure. And he was very anxious on the way home! First off, MetVet charges $72 per day of overnight boarding. This is almost 3x as much as BPAH. When I asked why it costs so much more. They responded that's just their flat fee. So no satisfactory explanation to justify the cost. And because my cat is on Rx diet, I even had to bring in my own supply of food. So that was over $500 plus my own food for 7 days' stay. That's more costly than a human staying in a economy hotel, where most even include a complimentary breakfast. Then, when I brought my fur child home today, not until I unzipped the carrier to let him out, did I notice that the fur liner was folded up and that he was just laid on top of it. I walked home with him exposed to the cold for good six blocks. They did not even bother to unfold the liner to get him tucked inside to keep him warm. It was 27F but felt like 15F outside. For a place that is AAHA certified, you would think they would be more cognizant of the well being of the client's pet. After all, I paid $72 per day. I'd expect more. read more

I recommend them to everyone who asks for a vet locally. I have seen most of the vets in the practice, but my faves are Dr Jacobs and Dr Balser. Generally we see them for routine care, but my Jackson has had some other issues. He has a chronic seasonal bronchitis that happens about the same time each year. Dr Jacobs listened to his history and suggested a treatment regimen that fit with his history and symptoms. Then he had a bizarre fungus that took special compounded medications to resolve. It was a long process and they kept me informed throughout. The two things that really validate how much they care is they call 1 day after a visit where there are vaccines or treatment to see how the pet is doing and how seriously they take COVID protocols. So many great things to say! Brought my dog here for his neutering and gastropexy. The first attempt he was super nervous and wouldn't go back to to the exam room. Dr Jacobs sensed his anxiety and had us come back weekly (free of charge!) for him to get comfortable with the office. Successfully had the surgery yesterday and everyone was incredibly friendly. Dr Jacobs had left for the day before my pup was ready to be picked up but called me on her cell phone and left her cell number for me to call with any questions or issues. They even clipped his nails during/after the surgery! One of the vet techs was leaving the same time I picked him up and stopped us in the parking lot to say goodbye and tell me about his walk earlier that day. The day after, they called to make sure he was doing well too. Really love the care and friendliness here! Our cat Lucky was nearing end of life when we took him to Metropolitan Vet Center in South Loop. After the initial diagnosis, Dr Jacobs explained our options very professionally and thoroughly. When our cat did not respond positively to short term palliative care, we took him back to be euthanized. I tried scheduling an appointment for a surgery consultation by filling out the request appointment form on their website. It prompts you to explain the reason for your visit, so I did in detail and when the business responded back they said "unfortunately we can't give you an estimate via email you would need to schedule an appointment" at this point I'm questioning the intelligence of the staff because the email they were responding to was my appointment request. I said I understood and I was trying to set up an appointment, and since then have gotten no response. It's extremely frustrating because the reviews looked great but this type of customer service and lack of follow up/communication is a joke. And they're not "too busy" because my appointment request was initially responded to the same day. read more

I will be as specific as possible in this review, but my best advice for new dog owners, if you choose to come here, is to make sure that you keep track of your own records and that you are very clear in your communication, and are not afraid to ask questions. I do believe the downfalls with this practice lie with the management. The vets have all been helpful and kind, and they work hard. COVID did not help with building a relationship, which is something I was hoping for as a new puppy owner, I know it has been hard across the nation. While the hours and location are very convenient, I believe they just have too many clients. There were a number of times were communication fell short. The first time was with a booster shot, that my puppy needed. I arrived to my appointment, and they did not know why I was there or what he was having done. I am sure he received the correct vaccination, but did not leave feeling confident. I also then received an email, reminding me to make an appointment for the said booster that he already had and reception and techs were confused if he needed two or three, a big thing to know, in my opinion. A few months later, when daycare requested records from them, they said he was missing the booster, only to have to back and forth for metrovet to confirm that he was all up to date. There are several different technicians, and receptionists answering phones, text and email, which is convenient but things can get lost, they would benefit from a portal system, and I do not believe that everybody reads his charts or records every time. A well intended vet gave him a large biscuit in one piece, only for him to throw it up 5 min later after we left because he has a history of throwing up when eating too much too quickly. If she had read the notes, she would have given him a smaller piece like the ones I dropped off with him at the start of the visit. Another instance was when he had diarrhea. I dropped off a stool sample, and a few days later went by to pick up his preventative heart guard and flea/tick medication. I asked if the results of his stool sample were in, to find that they were, and that he had hookworm. The technician told me to monitor and sent me on our way. I did not hear from a vet with next steps with what to do. I went home and spoke to friends and consulted my sister's vet who said that he needed medication for hookworm. I am a new puppy owner so rely on my vet to give good advice on his care treatment, so that the technician just sent me on my way telling me to monitor was upsetting. I had to call them back and ask for medication from the actual vet. I sent an email about this situation to the practice and never got a response back from the manager. The most recent situation where I decided to leave Metrovet was when my puppy was pretty sick, vomiting a bunch. They said I could take him in at a certain time, I took him there, and waiting in the parking lot. An hour and a half later, I called for an update, and they said that I should have been told it was a drop off and he was going to be seen in between appointments. He had been waiting in a crate to be seen and I was not told that. I asked why I was told to bring him in at a certain time, only to wait, they said they were booked up with appointments and wanted to see him there instead of having me go to the ER. I appreciate the sentiment, but would have liked to know that. When the next day he still was not better, they wanted me to bring him back for another drop off, but when I asked if they could give me an estimate if it would be 2 hours or closer to 6 hours, they said they were jam packed that day with surgeries and other cases and could not tell me how quickly he could be seen. They were going to be full of appointments for the next 6 days. I decided to keep him home that day since his symptoms were less severe and find a different vet with actual available appointment times in the meantime. Metrovet was responsive in sending over the records right away when I requested them. Again, if you choose this practice as your primary vet, they are convenient and nice enough, but you need to be organized and willing to ask lots of questions because communication is lacking. I have found a different vet where I already feel more comfortable with the level of attention and service. The new place is a bit more expensive so you if you do not have pet insurance, this is something also to consider. There are a number of options in the city, and unless management can improve, I would not recommend it. UPDATE- management did reach out after this review and made an effort to discuss my experience and they are working towards improving their practice. read more

Metro Vet was able to get my pup seen that Sunday afternoon and got her on meds right away to clear up the Kennel Cough she caught at daycare. Then again on a Sunday, she had trouble breathing. We rushed her over and they saw her right away sans appointment. Nothing ended up being wrong, but everyone was SO nice and understanding. Here's why they won me over: Location: It's in the south loop so it's walking distance to my house and Michigan Ave is a nice street to walk along. Even in the evening and at night it is well lit and fairly busy. It's also walking distance to DogGone Fun! which is where I take my pup for boarding, daycare, and grooming. Staff: The staff and Vets are always very nice and helpful. It seems like they remember every dog that comes in by name. Sometimes people even come in just to visit during their walks. Office: always clean. Haven't encountered any evil pups. We all know about those. The office is so cute! Pictures of dogs and books with silly pictures and great places to take your pup all around the city. There's even a fire hydrant painted on the wall! Adorable. Amenities: I LOVE the online portal. It lets you have easy access to your dog's records anytime/anywhere and gives you email alerts when your pup needs shots/ a check up etc. This was a big help when My dog was due for some vaccines while we were out of town. I was able to pull up his records and take him up to the local Petsmart for one of their vaccine days. No calling no faxing no hassle. You can also schedule appointments which is so convenient. Hours: These hours just make life easy. I am a full time grad student and I work so finding time to take my dog to the vet can be tough. This place is open 7am-10pm EVERY DAY! This has also been helpful the couple of times my dog has gotten sick or eaten something he shouldn't have. Instead of having to schlep to the emergency clinic because my vet closes early or isn't open on Sunday or whatever else, I always know that I can take him pretty much anytime and if it's really late I can always take him early the next morning. These folks are the best in the business. We took our French Bulldog (Frank) to Metro Vets for nearly his entire (12 years!) life. Every time we brought Frank in for a check up or nail trim or even for something more serious like back pain, we were treated like family. They see a LOT of pets but somehow always manage to make a personal connection with you and your pet. From the time Frank was a puppy until the time we had to put him down a couple of months ago, Metro Vets was always there for us. They do a fantastic job of allowing you to an active decision in the care of your pet . AKA, they aren't going to try to "sell" you veterinary services. They're also great about "email us a picture" or hopping on a quick phone call so you don't necessarily need to do an office visit. Like the time Frank at a bunch of cold medicine out of my sister-in-law's purse (long story). While we were freaking out, Metro Vets walked us through what we needed to do ASAP (basically get your dog to vomit, super fun). During the very difficult time of putting our dog down, Metro was supportive and kind throughout the entire process. As long as we're in Chicago, we'll bring our animals to Metro. But it took until finding Dr. Balser of Metropolitan Veterinary Center to recognise the perfect recipe of intelligence, kindness, intuitiveness, and loveliness. When Gwendolyn and I moved to Chicago three years ago, it was my first objective to find a holistic-minded veterinarian. Dr. Balser was suggested by the AHVMA. During the first examination of my Gwendolyn, the manner in which Dr. Balser spoke to me indicated a mutual respect and understanding for each other's roles in Gwendolyn's life. We specifically discussed, at that initial exam, a new bump which had appeared on Gwendolyn's body. When considering a fine needle aspirate of it, she stated, "You best know Gwendolyn. If this is behaving like the other benign masses, then let's leave it alone." (paraphrased from my memory). I immediately felt as though I could trust Dr. Balser and maintained this positioning throughout all future interactions. Fast forward another three years, and suddenly, in response to newfounded odd behaviours, I knew that Gwendolyn harvested a tumor that needed removed from her body. Despite having a full schedule, Dr. Balser and her magnificent team pushed in overdrive to examine and to operate immediately. Dr. Balser even so much as pushed the pathologist for a more rapid review of the extracted tumor's cells so that I could quickly create a holistic plan to manage what was "the most aggressive tumor" on which she had ever operated. Because of Dr. Balser and team, I was gifted with one additional month with my princess who, just one month prior to the surgery, was walking at a jubilant five to seven miles daily. She behaved as my little puppy until the very end, and my heart shall forever be grateful to Dr. Balser and team for their care and love of my Gwendolyn. Bottom line is that I like Dr. Balser. We live close to this place so it was a default choice for our primary vet after doing some research and reading mostly positive reviews. We have 2 dogs- one big doodle mix and one little mutt, both with distinct personalities so I feel like I've had a range of experience. Pros: you are always told how much something will cost and asked if you want to do it - no surprises, veterinarians are kind and informative when I had my questions prepared, extended hours are helpful for working pet parents, typically quick appointments. Cons: when my pet was having an emergency they said they could not take her in even though I was sobbing on the phone and willing to wait to be squeezed in, multiple times I have verbally confirmed all the vaccinations that my dog was supposed to receive and one was missed or records were not updated correctly, it seems like all of these things stem from having too many clients. Overall a great vet if you have time to wait and are thorough in your own paperwork. We have 1of our dogs that still goes here and have moved 1 that has more health issues to a more personal, attentive vet. read more

My wife and I have 2 dogs, an 85lb chocolate lab mix and our recent adoption of a 20lb min pin mix. I hit the last straw with my previous vet trying to shake me down and promptly started searching. I can say that finding a vet in Chicago is far more stressful than it needs to be. I read countless reviews across all the vets within reasonable distance from my home. Most of the low reviews across any vet seem to be cat related. I called Metro vet the same night I left my previous vet and had an appointment scheduled for the next morning. Every time I've called the staff has felt genuine and do their best to help answer your questions. The Dr we saw was direct, listened to me, my concerns and addressed them appropriately. The office was also very patient with me and Chewy while filling prescriptions online. We will definitely be returning and fully transferring our dogs to metro vets care. read more
