I don't like to write reviews like this but I called the business and was left no choice. Weiss Bakery sold us undercooked babka- the dough was still raw and stretchy in the center. My fiancée used to be a professional baker, so we know what raw dough is. The manager was very rude on the phone, talking over me and yelling at his employees while hearing my complaint. He offered store credit and refused a straight refund. Two years ago we had a great babka there. But now we won't be back. read more

Weiss has been dear to my heart for about three years now and I come here consecutively every December for the best sufganiyot to purchase during Chanukah ! Not only are they fresh but the jelly bursts out the second you take a bite into the soft fluffy deep fried piece of heaven. No exaggeration a day after Chanukah ends they stop making them and I make sure to stop by at least twice during the holiday. The prices are so reasonable and they have a huge selection of sufganiyot. Fillings range from chocolate pudding to custard and ever rosemary! Not to mention the best standard jelly. They also function as a full service bakery with everything from pastries to cookies and cakes. Despite staff not being the friendliest people there gd sent pastries make up for it. I always look forward to having there "limited edition" sufganiyot. It's a must try if your a fan of jelly filled pillow like bites of heaven. Cash and credit accepted. If you thought the chocolate babka from Breads Bakery was the last word in chocolate-layered breads, you haven't met Weiss Bakery's kokosh yet. Similarly chocolatey and swirly in form, kokosh is fudgy, dense, chewy, ooey and gooey where babka is fluffy and brioche-like. I also got the poppyseed roll, which has a similarly chewy and dense texture and density to kokosh, only the filling is made with a poppyseed spread. Both pastries are immensely fun to unroll and eat layer by layer. The overall effect of both the kokosh and the poppyseed roll reminds me a little of baked Chinese mooncakes or baklava: dense, faintly flaky pastry with a chewy, dense and sticky texture. If these things sound appealing to you, come on over and give it a try. I promise it's worth the trek on the D train. It is 8.99 per pound, and portions are sold by the pound. I'm planning on freezing what I can't eat... bahaha as if that will happen. read more

Seriously - No Joke - This may be hard to believe; This is a Bakery that you want to check out - Stop by & pay them a visit. This may have the best donuts in New York City - Everything is Kosher! - Everything is delicious. They have a tremendous amount of options - especially for the health conscious. Again - kidding aside - the donuts are always fresh and are out of this world. I recently used Weiss Bakery to help cater our event. They did an amazing job. If you need help - or personal attention - Don't be afraid to ask for the Manager - Mr. Yoeli Weiss - He claims no relation to the owner :-) Nonetheless, he is a gentleman and super helpful. Staff are kind and helpful and very pleasant to the many demanding customers that flock to this place from all over the world. Its on my Top 10 Bakery List of the world and I have traveled all over. They delivered a dozen sufganiyot to us for Hanukkah, all of which were delicious. We got custard, chocolate pudding, jelly, and caramel. The owner was so nice and offer us to try donuts but when I was about to check out another person was there who clearly was rude and unwelcoming! I really wanted to like Weiss after reading all the astonishingly good Yelp reviews. My hope is to leave a fair accounting of our experience. The short version is that the pastries we had were excellent, but the service was conflicting & poor, verging on downright offensive. My girlfriend & I went in at an admittedly not great time of day- late-ish on a Friday afternoon, just before Shabbat, but not anywhere near sunset just yet, and *well* ahead of the posted closing time of 6pm. We thought the place was closed until a very nice employee lady who was cleaning the (mostly shuttered) windows brightly told us they weren't closed yet and that we should come on in. I wish I'd caught her name, because she was great. I wish it had just been her, because we wouldn't have had such a bad experience otherwise. Also in there were a number of orthodox men, one of whom was very clearly some kind of manager or senior employee of Weiss. All of the orthodox men outside of this manager character cleared out when we entered, and re-entered the store immediately after we left, as if they didn't want to be around us. The manager tried very hard, in spite of the very kind lady who was trying to help us out, to make us feel unwelcome, going as far as to shut *all* the lights in the store off while we were in the store, then when the lady tried to turn the case lights back on so we could pick something, he very rudely turned them off again. He spoke very roughly to us in... Some sort of strange gibberish that definitely wasn't Hebrew and wasn't English, as if he was pretending not to speak English at all, but seemed to be saying that we needed to pick something and get out because the store was closed, to the point that even his coworker said "what are you even saying right now?" while continuing to politely help us. We were in there all of maybe 5 minutes well ahead of closing time, paid quickly, bought very little because of the bad vibe, and got out. Again, I wish I'd caught her name, because she was completely reasonable & treated us well even in spite of her poorly behaved coworker. I don't begrudge Weiss' orthodox employees their observation of their faith one bit, or their wanting to keep as kosher as possible in their observance of Shabbat, but we shouldn't have even been allowed in if they felt so sure they had to close early. It led to an extremely awkward situation that has my girlfriend and I not wanting to set foot back in the place. I'm just very disappointed because I was excited to introduce her to some of the wonders of Jewish baked goods, and there's no doubt even with the small sample we had, as far as the baking craft goes, Weiss is a very competent spot. I'm also willing to say our timing might have just been very bad, but the attitude we received is really a poor way to treat any customer in any establishment, and I can't help but wonder if it's because we didn't look Jewish enough. I sincerely want to believe that's not the case, as the owner seems so reasonable & open in his responses to other Yelp reviews, but that's the distinct vibe I got. I grew up in the area, moved away in my teenage years and returned for nearly a decade when I was in my twenties. As a non-Jew, I tended to stay away from 13th avenue because I find the dismissive, paranoid, holier-than-thou and often outright contemptuous way in which such a large portion of this supposedly pious community treats outsiders to be revolting, although not particularly surprising. As a general rule, the more conservative and insular a community becomes, the less willing or able it is to acknowledge the humanity of The Other. Eventually, I had no choice but to visit 13th avenue regularly because my bank was there. It is for this reason that I found myself wandering into Weiss Bakery one fateful afternoon. As soon as you open the door you are greeted by a decadent olfactory and visual feast. You gain 3 pounds just by breathing in the delicious scent of butter and sugar and chocolate and pastry. The sheer variety and aesthetic beauty in the displays of cakes and pastries and cookies and petits fours is something to behold. The girls behind the counter are always very pleasant. They can dote on customers who seem to skew older and more persnickety, which means the line doesn't move all that quickly, but when you get to the front all of their attention is on you, so I rather like it. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but when I get a craving, this is the place towards which my mind invariably wanders. If you're going to indulge, you might as well go whole hog and nothing I've had here has ever left me dissatisfied. For me, the chocolate is where it's at: and Jewish bakeries seem to do it right because the focus is on the chocolatiness of chocolate and not the sugariness. It is never cloying or assertive to the point that it eclipses the other ingredients. Does that make sense? Everyone likes a nice babka, and their donuts are renowned far and wide. But my money's on the kokosh, which is a long, somewhat thin layer of pastry slathered in chocolate and rolled up into an oblong loaf with lots of alternating layers of each ingredient. With a cup of strong coffee it is absolutely divine. And it freezes well too, so you can slice off a few pieces and warm them up in the oven or microwave for an impromptu guest, coming off as an inveterate host in the process. The kokosh also comes in the cinnamon walnut and poppyseed varieties, but I haven't tasted either of those. I am such a fan of this shop and regret that I now live so far away from them because I have yet to find a place quite like it. With their sheer variety, you really can't go wrong! read more

For my husband's 40th surprise birthday party, I struggled on what cake to get him. See, he's severely lactose intolerant and a lot of vegan and non-dairy baked goods just taste kind of disgusting to him. He does like fruit pies, but come on... that's a pie and not birthdayish. Now you see my dilemma. As luck would have it, we were in town (before moving back here) and I showed my husband around Boro Park. He went into Weiss Bakery and ordered a couple of shooter desserts preparing to be disappointed. No. He loved it. So much so that when we passed by there again to return to the subway, he picked up a couple more. This gave me hope that he would enjoy a birthday cake from there. In planning the surprise party, I trekked over here specifically to buy the cake. I ended up buying a small chocolate/vanilla cake ($20) that when cut into smallish pieces was enough to feed a crowd of almost 20. I was a little nervous about what others would think since everyone loves a good dairy cake. Oh, did I forget to mention that I didn't tell anyone it was dairy-free (pareve) until after they ate it? Not only did everyone really enjoy and love the cake but there were exclamations of surprise from everyone that there was not a single drop of dairy in the cake. No one could tell the difference. And the birthday boy? He didn't say anything about whether he liked it or not so I thought maybe he was disappointed. When I turned to ask him later in the evening, he said, "oh, I had four slices." He liked it. He really liked it! Bottom line? Whether you're kosher and need a pareve cake for your non-dairy event or just severely lactose intolerant, you will be able to find a cake at Weiss that will please everyone. I stumbled on this place by accident. But Wow, I felt like a kid in a candy shop in here. The moment I entered I felt like I was in a special place. Everything was clean and immaculate. Everywhere I looked I saw pastries and cookies, cakes, cupcakes, pies & so much more. I was imagining I'd probably look a little crazy if I bought one of almost Every Single Thing in this bakery... But I'd really actually wanna do this one day. Unfortunately today was not the day as I was running late to work. I purchased two breakfast pastries, a wide cinnamon one & a small cheese pastry. Both were great. Light & delicious. I would come back and I would want to try a new thing each time!! Came here to buy their well known jelly donuts during Chanukah. Bought a dozen, they gifted 2 free donuts. Bought 4 jelly, 4 custard, and 4 caramels. Out of the 3 types, I thought their jelly ones were the best. I like the flour and oil they used to fry the donuts. I thought that the oil used tasted light and the dough was a little airy, not dense at all. The custard & caramel had a little hint of bitterness to the custard & caramel. It's probably due to the materials they used to make the custard. In any case, I didn't think it was that appealing. If I had to pick between the two, I would prefer the caramel because it's mildly sweeter than the custard. I have not tried other donuts from other places, but once I do, I can more accuarately rate this place. Until then, 4 stars for this place. Service was friendly. I asked the sales person if the knew what the donuts were called and they just said donuts. I later found online that they are called Sufganiot. I felt that they should have known, oh wells. I would recommend the deep fried jelly donut, not the other flavors. For a box of 12, it cost $19.80. Fairly expensive I would say for donuts. read more

This is one of my preferred bakeries in Brooklyn. The baked goods are delicious, especially the halvah cheesecake, which is available by the slice, much to the downfall of my diet plans. The store is clean and well kept, the fruit tarts look like something out of a magazine, and the selection of pastries, rugelech, challahs, and other breads is inviting. The bakery is kosher beyond reproach; flour is specially sifted with a special rabbinically-sanctioned Bnei Brak sifter to ensure there are no maggots, weevils, gnats, or other pantry bugs in the flour, and the bakery is pas yisroel and yoshon. There is a tantalizing array of pies that would be a showstopper at any shabbos table you may find yourself invited to. A few years ago, I bought this decadent-looking parve chocolate caramel pie that was a hit at a shabbos meal I went to on the Upper West Side. It was very rich and sweet, without being overly sweet and cloying. The counter girls are from Hungary or Poland, and their English and customer service skills leave much to be desired, but they're trying, I suppose. The store itself is beautiful, like a Madison Avenue patisserie, or elegant Martha Stewart-style bakery in Connecticut. Try the Chezkel Bread, a comical offering. You see, Yechezkel, or Chezkel, for short, is the Hebrew name for Ezekiel, the prophet who dreamed up a nutritious, multigrain, and fiber-rich bread recipe in the bible that inspired the famous Ezekiel Bread many people love. Ezekiel bread is frozen, though, and not pas yisroel, but here, the Chezkel Bread is ten times better, because it's freshly made, with a wicked crust, and nice crumb. read more
