The kolache dough was good, but I am not a fan of the cheese infused sausages that are out in kolaches. Plus, my husband spit out part of a toothpick. I know every place has good and bad moments, but I would rather wait the extra 10 minutes and go to Hruskas in Ellinger. read more

Went to Weikel's for Kolaches (fruit filled). Weikel's is a bakery and gas station, kind of a mini Buccees. Got a tray of six asst Kolaches (our pick). My favorite was the poppyseed. My husband's fave was lemon. The server was very nice and helpful. The restrooms were very clean. Good find and would stop in again. read more

Excellent Kolaches! They have a good variety of fillings and never seem to run out. I also like the "cheese pockets" which are filled with cream cheese, cottage cheese and tapioca. As mentioned the pecan cinnamon rolls are great. The pigs are not bad, but I've had better. The sandwiches are pretty good and made on fresh bread. Cookies are good. I always stop and pick up a box of "house special" cookies for my grandmother when I'm heading home. read more

Been here several times and I've always got speedy, friendly service! The baked goods are excellent and always fresh, the sandwiches from the deli are great, albeit a tad overpriced, the restrooms are always clean and maintained. To say I was disappointed by the misleading comments I've come across regarding Weikel's Store and Bakery would be an understatement. I drove hours out of my way to sample what others (must be city folk) marvel at. Obviously, they did not have Czech grandmothers to make them mouth-watering fruit kolaches and dill pickles (without sugar) as they grew up. Go to B-Jo's Czech Bakery at Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse south of El Campo if you want to get as close to the real thing as possible (This is evident as much of the meat at Weikel's is from Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse). I can't believe that I spent so much money on substandard fruit kolaches ($1 a pop) and dill pickles (almost $8 for not even a quart) that used sugar yet did not include this ingredient on the label as I went way off my beaten track to satisfy a desire to relive a wonderful part of my youth. Luckily, I do get to go by B-Jo's Czech Bakery at Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse every now and again and am able to get awfully close to those great Czech foods my grandmother used to make with lots of love and elbow grease. However, I would be remiss if I didn't say that Weikel's does make a pretty good raisin cinnamon roll, but it was nowhere good enough for me to get over the poor fruit kolaches and "sugar" dill pickles. read more

On our kolache quest, we had to stop at Weikel's in order to compare it to Hruska's in the kolache showdown of the Czech towns to see who would win it out in the battle. I must say that this country general store had lots of stuff to over stimulate the long road trippers with their cool milkshake machine and fun overly sugar syrup coffee cappuccino fountain with flavors like Almond Joy, Hershey Carmel, and York peppermint patti. But back on track to the kolaches. We showed up late on a Sunday afternoon so the pickins were slim compared the other place. I stuck with the sausage cheese and jalapeño kolache so I could offer a fair taste tasting assessment and picked the most random flavor you would ever thing to make into a Kolache and that is Prune. No I don't have issues with my digestive track, but I was curious so it's so random and odd to see that flavor that I wanted to try it. The BF got ham and pepper jack cheese kolache and the cottage cheese/ tapioca pocket kolache. You order at the counter and the person writes down your order on a card that you take to the cashier. BTW, you heat up your own kolaches in a small microwave on the side. My first thought when biting into my sausages one was that it tasted like a pig in a blanket because the bread tasted like a soft hot dog bun. There wasn't any sweetness to the bread but it was fresh with remnants of lighted powered flour on parts of the outside. The sausage was a link and was a pretty good size. I guess it's all a matter of preference if you want a sweet dough pastry bun for your kolache or a more soft flour bun instead wrapped around your goods. BF's ham a pepper jack was pretty good but his cheese pocket was definitely different because it had cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on the outside of the bun. They weren't bad buys for the price and I'm still glad I came to see the different styles of kolaches, but I know where I'll be getting mine from now on. BTW, the prune kolache didn't really have any distinct flavors just a standard sugary jelly like substance. read more

Stopped in again on the way back from Houston. Same lady behind the kolache counter. She was incredibly rude and needs a major attitude adjustment. She kept pushing us to make our selection. And when we asked her about the packaged kolaches that said "previously frozen", she rudely barked that all their kolaches are freshly made each morning and the packaged ones were taken out of the freezer earlier in the day. WTF does that even mean??? Fresh and frozen are antonyms! We will not be coming back. read more

Weikel's is the best place to get kolaches in central Texas. Their cream cheese kolaches are to die for, and the other fruit flavors are good as well. Their sausage kolaches are only so-so. Their coconut cream pie is absolutely wonderful. There are always people in the store. It is popular, and worth the stop. read more

I've been eating these kolaches for 30+ years and they have never disappointed! We get them when we are driving from Houston to Austin, dropping kids off at summer camp in La Grange, or even when a neighbor is passing through. The fruit kolaches are my favorite, but you can't go wrong with anything here. They do run out of some flavors as it gets later in the day. Go early (and often)! read more

The food choices here were a solid three stars. The menu included a loaded BBQ baked potato, grilled cheese, Porker sandwich (chopped BBQ pork with cole slaw), and Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. If you want to pay $6 for a ketchup sandwich that Weikel's calls a Pulled Pork sandwich, this is the place. If you want to buy 4 big, tasteless cookies for $3.60, this is the place. The only thing wrong with Weikel's is that they won't let me live there, which is probably good, because if I did, my badankadank would be too fat to fit out the doors. I was disappointed that they don't sell their poppyseed filling by the trough. It is, simply, heavenly. If I ever find myself on Death Row, Weikel's poppy seed pockets will be on my Last Meal menu. read more

After taking the wrong road to Shiner, TX (I was the navigator) my older (not by much) sister and I went to Weikel's in what turned out to be an adventure driving around on the Farm to Market roads back to Austin. We missed the last tour at the Spoetzl brewery. Frowny face. I know. Gotta say. I wasn't impressed. Perhaps she built it up too much. I had a number of different treats but not-a-one tickled me in the right way. The kolaches were okay, I guess, but they tasted like the pastry part was lacking that goodness that contributes to weight gain. The cherry filling was good by itself but that's not what makes a pastry. The pigs-in-a-blanket were nothing special as well as these sandwichy type things that you're instructed to zap in the microwave for just a few seconds. The best part was two weeks later when I opened a package of beef jerky I got from there but it was from some other place called Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse. That, I would get again. read more

Great place to stop. They sell all sorts of kolaches. They usually have breakfast tacos by the front registers. Weikel's is a crowd pleaser.

This bakery was absolutely delicious! Stopped by here on the way to Houston. Had a croissant with ham, egg, and cheese which was great! The croissant was buttery and soft. Their pastries are also fresh and delish! Would highly recommend to anyone trying to fill a gap. read more

Stopped yesterday, June 12th, returning from Houston. Peanut butter cookies were awful and gas was over-priced. Never again.

The bread alone is worth five stars. Take it home and fry it up with lots of butter, the way the old Bon Ton restaurant used to serve it. Fantastic! read more

I understand this used to be a great local bakery. I thought the fruit kolaches tasted like some pre-made, refrigerated, Pillsbury-type pastry. The counter help were totally uninterested in their job and don't know anything about the pastries except the name and price. I rarely throw away food, but the sausage kolaches were nasty. The sausage was salty, greasy and had a slimy texture. I bought 6 and threw 4 away. I read many 5-star reviews, but I can't help but wonder how many of these folks would know a good kolache from a bad one?? read more

As for the store... Great store. My advice is to stay off of State Hwy 71 especially anywhere near La Grange. The highway patrol is nasty there and totally unreasonable. Do a few searches on the internet about the La Grange area and the cops... you'll get all the information you need. Maybe if enough people stop traveling 71 and business drops a change will be made. I hope this helps someone from experiencing the unreasonable law in the area. I'm being kind on the wording. read more
