Even the cream filled donuts were delicious but the fruit and the cream cheese kolaches were the belle of the ball! Especially try the "flat" style cherry kolache, it comes with a sneaky/divine layer of cream cheese under the cherry filling that cuts the sweet a bit and perfectly compliments the pillowy sweet bread underneath. Staff was super friendly, they've got cold chocolate milk and other drinks inside a cooler near the cashier for purchase, some seating inside and some seating under the front porch outside. OMG I was so excited to stop here! I am Czech so finding Czech food is always exciting to me. I have always loved cheese kolaches but as I get older, I am willing to try different flavors. Besides my father's cooking when I go home to visit, I rarely get to enjoy Czech food, especially living in FL. We stopped here late morning/early afternoon. Surprisingly, everything was selling quickly. Inside, you can choose to sit down and eat or order to go from the bakery counter. It was very overwhelming in there because it was really busy and there were so many choices!! I saw they had sausage and cheese kolaches so I had to get one of those. OMG it was so friggin good!! I chose a couple fruit ones as well. Since they were so busy, stock was decreasing quickly. Hubs is not as familiar with my culture but he did enjoy the kolaches. Any time I discover apricot items, I go for it. I also purchased the apple and I believe the strawberry. Every single one was delicious and brought back so many memories of enjoying these with my family in the Czech Republic. I love to try new places on road trips. driving between Houston and San Antonio just a little off I10 in Sealy is the Original Kountry Bakery. It is a small-ish restaurant with a drive through. The place was not dirty but it has an older worn-out feel. I mainly stopped in to try out the pastries. So the service was so so, the person working behind the counter was not very helpful when asked about flavors and recommendations. To be honest she seemed disinterested in general. We ordered 2 kolaches and a slice of pie. our first options for fillings on the pie and Kolaches were out of stock so we went with what they had that sounded good. Cream Cheese Kolaches: the breading was soft and it was an ok size however all I could taste was a heavy heavy butter taste. Almost like movie theater butter flavor. I ended up not eating all of it because of the butter flavor Pineapple Kolaches: The breading was soft and was the same size as the others, however the pineapple filling was basically just off the shelf jelly. the biggest issue was that it stated just like a pineapple soda and not in a good way. It just seemed that it was infused with "pineapple flavor". In the end it was not the worst thing, but not that good. Lemon Meringue Pie: The Pie was average size slice. the meringue was pilled very high. I found the density of the meringue was very thick. It was not supple, and more ridged than I am used to. The lemon filling was an ok consistency, however the flavor was more out processed than fresh lemon flavor. the crust was fine. The biggest theme for the restaurant was that everything I tasted seemed to have a processed flavor, like the flavoring/ingredients they used was out of a can or store bought liquid. It was very noticeable when I try three totally different flavors and come away with the same thought. I would honestly say, that I have had pastry out of a package from a convenient store that tasted better than the items I sampled. Oh my, absolutely a must try bakery. The best dough I've tasted since my German family baked. The Kolache, whether sausage or sweet, is indescribable delicious. We were driving from El Paso to Houston and checked the reviews for somewhere to get tasty kolaches along the way. We called ahead to ensure our preferred fillings would be available. Glad we did. The person who took our order was friendly and helpful. The dough had the perfect hint of sweetness. The pan sausage, cheese, and jalapeño filling was delicious. Simple, no frills restaurant/shop with bakery items & quick bites like sandwiches, wraps, fried dishes. Popped in after driving from SA to tour the Painted Churches in the area. I wasn't super hungry so I ordered a breaded Chicken wrap $3.50 with shredded cheddar cheese, a tomato, lettuce & served with Ranch dressing. Simple fare, not "foodie" material but good enough for a quick bite. We also got a fish basket($7.50?) with long breaded catfish sticks, tater tots on the side, a ketchup/horseradish sauce & Ranch dressing sauce & a Fanta drink. Service was quick. Seemed busy but had enough tables available. There's a nearby high school so I imagine kids grab a quick snack here. Small bakery with delicious treats! This is a must stop on the drive to San Antonio. The highlight for me was the real Czech kolache! The poppy seed one I split was divine! I also ordered a glazed donut, and wow, it was surprisingly simple yet tasty! They also offer strudel, which they sell whole or by the slice. On the way to Houston, my husband and I stopped at the Kountry Bakery in Schulenberg for kolaches. We got peach, strawberry, pineapple, and cherry. They did not have dewberry (phooey)! I really struggled to come up with a rating for this place. I can't decide if I should give a 3 or 4...maybe 3.5 stars, so that rounds up to 4? Here's my predicament - the sauage inside the klobasnek was fan freaking tastic! Hands down, it's the best sausage I've ever had inside of one. I wouldn't be surprised if the sausage was homemade, either by the bakery itself or someone they know. The sausage was hearty and what a sausage should be, not some store-bought hot dog. As for the kolache itself - it was delicious, don't get me wrong. However, I have had fluffier dough at a Czech event at a church in Houston. And this is where the struggle lies. It's funny how people's experiences are different. If you don't eat kolaches or seek out specialty kolaches, you wouldn't know otherwise. But lately, in the last year, I have eaten quite a number of kolaches from Czech bakeries. Southern Maid may make them, but that is definitely not the same! Overall, I would come here again. I am heartbroken. I have been buying Kolaches here for over 35 years. Always stopping in my regular business trips and sometimes making special 4+ hour round trips for holidays and special events. I do not travel my I-10 route as often anymore since retirement. When I do and I am early enough, this is a must stop. Being of Czech heritage, I know a good Kolache and what I bought last Friday was not. I could see that they looked different in the display counter, and bought a dozen anyway. The normal fluffy soft pillowy dough was flat, dense and chewy. The poppyseed filling was burnt. The fruit filling had good flavor, though the dough was a dealbreaker. Not worth the calories. I bought two blueberry cream cheese bars and they were tasty or I could not have gone with 3 stars. I see a lot of recent 4 and 5 star reviews and I will stop again. I am hopeful that this was just an off day; maybe the chief Kolache maker was on vacation or out sick? Right now I am sad to write this review. Next time maybe I can update it to 5 stars. read more

I have frequented this bakery for years. It is a Czech bakery and I was fortunately raised on this type of baked goods. My favorite items at the Kountry Bakery are their jalapeño cheese klobasnek (pig in a blanket) and kolaches. Many people have cloned anything stuffed in a dough a kolache (scrambled eggs, etc.) but they are not a real kolache as I know one. The Kountry Bakery also bakes pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, strudels but I love their dewberry pie. If you're not familiar with dewberries they grow wild and are normally picked in late May early June. The Kountry Bakery has a drive through and before the Coronavirus they served hamburgers and other lunch items. Drive through as you won't be disappointed. This is the place that makes me look forward to the mind numbing drive when we go to San Antonio. IMHO Kountry bakery has some of the best pan sausage kolaches that you will ever taste. If pan sausage isn't your thing, they have lots of other ones to choose from, as well as an assortment of donuts. My daughter loves the fruit kolaches as she is a vegetarian. The cream cheese kolaches are a hit as well. They have a drive through but I always go inside as I like to nuke the kolaches so they are pipping hot. They have a few tables if you don't want to eat on the road. Everything has always been clean and the staff has always been friendly. If you ever happen to be passing through Schulenburg Texas, I definitely recommend finding and eating at this place. They have these bizarre pastries that are either filled with some sort of fruit, or filled with some sort of meat. Either way, they are absolutely delicious. I had the one filled with Dewberry and it was outrageously good. Also, you should try ordering the BLT sandwich. It comes on Texas toast which is about the size of a football. It's a totally outrageous experience. I made up excuses just to go back on the last couple of days that I was in town. The sweet tea is so thick it practically has to be eaten with a spoon. I got a couple of rice crispy treats for my kids on the way home and I took them back in the plane. Everybody was quite satisfied. Definitely a great local venue. read more

As we traveled back to Florida on I-10 east my wife saw the sign for Kolaches so we stopped at the exit. They weren't exactly what we were looking for but bought a half dozen of the pigs in a blanket. OMG the boudin ones were amazing and then we tried the sausage and cheese...I was in heaven. Our boys enjoyed the ham and cheese ones. I wish we had tried them before we pulled out of the parking lot, I would have gone back in to buy a dozen more. 4.25 stars. If you've come for Czech-reminiscent pastries filled with meat, then you have come to the right place. Yes, you can order kolaches with all sorts of wonderful fruit flavors here (what the hell is a dewberry?). You can order a burger or something that isn't a meat-filled pastry. If you are engaging in any of the above behavior, perhaps I'm not the best person to advise you on your meat journey. Your first real decision should be pan sausage vs regular sausage. The pan sausage is basically the round patties that you often find in breakfast biscuits across the country except this one is stuffed inside a buttery pastry instead. In other words, it's an upgrade on a breakfast biscuit. Allow that to sink into your head. Of course, you could go (non)-traditional and order the jalapeno, cheddar cheese, and sausage filled kolache instead. While this wasn't the advice that I received from the sweet young lady who placed my order, I thought it was a superior to the pan sausage kolache. In fact, it very well may have been the best jalapeno, cheddar and sausage kolache I've tried in this State (yes, including the venerable kolaches of West, Texas) so it goes without saying that this is my recommendation to each and every reader (except the vegetarian ones). The ham and cheese kolache was pretty standard and you can skip that. And there are many other people who will advise you on all the incredibly authentic fruit kolaches. For what its worth, even though I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I did notice they make some interesting pies as well (jack daniels pecan pie, buttermilk pie, the aforementioned dewberry pie, etc.). I'd probably order a dozen kolaches and a buttermilk pie for the road on a subsequent visit. I'd suggest you do the same. read more

Place was recommended by an rv park worker, she said to get their speciality cheese Danish but they don't call it that, it's called kolchen or something very rich not too sweet, it was so tasty also got pigs in a blanket, the bread was soft, slightly sweet and the sausage was tasty. It was all good. The sweet tea was also very refreshing, almost too sweet but this is Tx, I suspect it's supposed to be that way.
