I never drive to Houston TX ( in my case today Richmond, TX near Houston) without staying at Weikells Bakery. It's historic and a staple in LaGrange, TX. They are known for their kolaches and pastries. They also have an assortment of goods including clothing, beverages, deli and a whole host of snacks. I purchased two pigs-n-a-blanket and pecan cinnamon roll. So delicious... Saturday was quite busy at the bakery. It formed a pretty pleasant environment. read more

Great road trip pitstop location. This was our first visit to one of these and we were pleasantly surprised. Not quite the size and experience of a Buccees, but still a lot of snack options available. We tried some of their baked goods. They also have Kolaches! Once again, headed down to see my parents. Always stop in to get poppyseed pockets for my dad and fruit kolaches for my mom. The bathrooms are always clean. They have a nice store, it's a little more than a convenient store and bakery. There's all types of homemade pastries of breads along with a deli. I enjoy stopping here. It's just hard to pick out what you want cause I would like to have one of everything. Compared to Hruska,the bread here is a bit more light.I guess it all comes down to preference. The people behind the counter mainly one lady had this 'tude like you were bothering here or taking up too much time even tho place was empty. For being my first actual kolache it wasn't bad but won't go out my way/1hr drive for them. read more

Excellent service and exceptional welcoming experience. I had a soft and delicious plain cinnamon roll. Sorry, no photos, the cinnamon roll was so good I forgot to take a picture. We also but a whole coconut pie. If you are in the area you cannot leave La Grange without getting one or two of the many delicious pies they have. Weikel's since 1929 and my favorite stop over between Austin & Houston (circa 2004) for bright & clean restrooms, local snacks, and MY FAVORITE cream cheese kolaches. It's in the bread. Spongy, not-too-sweet (but a Hawaiian-nod) and excellent alongside any of your favorite fillings although sausage/jalapeño/cheese and aforementioned cream cheese are bees knees. We just love this place! It's SO much more than a gas station. We stop there often when we go through La Grange and usually get there special of the day. Today it was a Philly cheesesteak and it was excellent. They're special of the day sandwich or burger, chips and a drink is only $10. The Czech bakery is amazing. I haven't gotten anything there that wasn't absolutely delicious! They also sell a lot of home canned goods, homemade noodles, things like that. They have a nice clean bathroom and a little store off to the side with clothing and overpriced souvenirs. Both the deli and the bakery staff were very friendly today. The locals love this place and that's always an indicator how good it is! I'm sure we will be back. read more

Stopped by on our way to Marble Falls. We ordered a pastrami & provolone on toasted white bread and a Ruben sandwich with SunChips & drink. The counter ladies were very nice. A small snafu with getting both sandwiches was quickly remedied. We ordered 2 fruit kolaches...Apple & pineapple. We got a cream cheese instead of pineapple. The pastry is super soft. We enjoyed both of them. We also got a honeybee---a cinnamon roll with pecans & honey instead of frosting. That is quite nice. Lots of honey chopped pecans and again super soft pastry dough. Lastly we got 2 regular cinnamon rolls one with raisins and two one no raisins. We will eat them for breakfast tomorrow. I'm sure they're going to need awesome. There is a cute shop there too. Items are fairly expensive but very cute. We will stop again on the way back. read more

I drove out to meet friends in La Grange, expecting polite small-town hangs and maybe a sad cup of gas station coffee. What I did not expect was to stumble into a Czech bakery inside a gas station that absolutely wrecked my taste buds in the best way possible. First of all: pecan shortbread cookies. These weren't just cookies. These were buttery little discs of joy that crumbled like my willpower. Soft, nutty, and somehow both nostalgic and elite. I bought one. Then another. Then I blacked out and woke up with a bag. The pickles? Phenomenal. Crunchy, vinegary, and clearly made by someone who believes cucumbers should live their best, most flavorful life. Honestly, they slapped harder than they had any right to. Everything I tried? A total hit. No weak links. It was like the bakery gods descended into a gas station and said, "Let's confuse the hell out of travelers with excellence." Quintessentially Texas, too. Where else can you fill your tank, question your life choices, and then find nirvana in a kolache? 10/10. Would take a road trip detour for the cookies alone. read more

We stopped in for the bathrooms on a trip and decided to check out the bakery and store. The store was full of customers and it was hopping. The shelves were well stocked with pastries and all sorts of goodies that were freshly made. Unfortunately, if you're gluten-free you're out of luck. There wasn't anything fresh there you could have. This bakery proved the benefit to advertising! I wasn't in the mood to stop anywhere on my trip to Austin from Houston. Then, I saw a billboard about the bakery and my curiosity was peaked. And, the rest is history! What a fabulous bakery. There is such a fantastic variety. I ate some kolaches and pigs in the blanket. They were all worth a second trip someday. I rarely give this low amount of stars but this was just a disappointment. After driving for hours in the pouring rain this place looked like just what I needed. Kolaches were on my mind. They have a huge bakery and lots of variety. I got Jalapeno and cheese sausage, Cheese sausage, and Hatch cheese sausage kolaches. The dough was a bit dense and the sausages were just bad. Only mentioning that die hard peeps will scream klobasnek; like Yelp has either word in their database. I'm seeing red lines like a run on sentence in Microsoft Word. There are some serious contenders along 71 from Austin to Houston. Let's start with the giant convenience store Buc-ee's in Bastrop. They actually do a nice job representing the craft. Fave being the boudin version and the Texas centric biscuit variation. Weikel's is a nice place; seemed clean and friendly staff. I picked out a cinnamon roll to take home; indulged in a ham and cheese with pepper jack on the outdoor patio. Nice meat/cheese combination. Sweet bread was tasty. I did notice there were many empty spaces in the display. Get back in your car if you're doing a kolache tour and head over to Ellinger, Texas. Hruska's cases seem to never run out. Been there many times and there's almost never an empty tray. Faves include...well, everything. Personal goto is the sausage wrapped in cabbage kolache. This store is above average when you think of your average 7-11, Circle K with a hot dog roller. Yet, when compared to stops along the kolache trail it's about average. I tried out Hruska's the prior afternoon, and Buc-Ees in Bastrop just prior to stopping at Wiekels. The kolaches at Weikels have more fruit to pastry ratio than the other two, and the dough is soft and chewy there. They have 15 or so flavors, while Buc-Ees had only three flavors of sweet kolaches, and their dough was dry and crumbly. I might try Hruska's on a morning just to make a fair comparison. read more

Solid 5 stars! Probably the best fruit kolaches in Texas. Weikel's have 3 store locations, two along 290 and this one in La Grange. I've been to all of them and I think this one has the most variety type of bakery items. I ordered a peach cream kolache, one raspberry shortbread, one apple danish, and iced coffee. I just love their doughs for kolache -- super soft and really tasty. Shortbread is a must! It's flavorful but not overly sweet. The texture is great, and I would still eat it even there's no raspberry jams at all. The apple danish is huge, but a bit too sweet, not a fan. The iced coffee is pre-mixed with sugar/syrup and cream. I usually drink black coffee, so their iced coffee was a bit too much processed/flavored for me. Overall, I will, and you should, stop by this place and try some bakery items if you happen to be around this area. read more

I don't like arguing with a cafe about the cost of my meal. There should be transparency. When the menu lists eggs and various forms of pork as meats, and the menu says pick two meats, then a double egg taco should be the standard price. Yet the good folks at Weikel's will argue till you are red in the face that an extra egg is an extra charge. I am across the street at McDonald's. Cheaper. Better. Always consistent. read more

Weikel's Bakery is a excellent stop in La Grange TX I strongly recommend stopping on your to Austin TX or to Houston TX on hwy 71. So many things to choose from, my favorite is the blueberry kolaches. They're fresh and soft and melt in your mouth. They also have fresh Reuben sandwiches that's very flavorful and juicy. You will be happy you stopped , very friendly employees and very helpful. read more

Now that I'm beginning to get indoctrinated into kolache culture of TX, I think I'm learning to tell a good one from an average one. Surprisingly, Bucee's is the frontrunner so far. Weikel's was definitely not as popular an option because our Kolaches were not super fresh. The fact that we had to warm it up on our own - maybe we messed up. The sweeter versions were certainly better than the meat-filled options because the meat-to-bread ratio was heavy on the latter. read more
