This place is so goo! Best fruit kolaches and best sausage and cheese kolaches I have ever had! They also had amazing muffins.

I would say they have the best apple kolaches in Texas (and therefore the world) but I haven't tried kolaches from every bakery in Texas. Anyway, they really are perfect. The poppy seed kolaches are amazing as well. The bread is always perfectly soft. read more

These kolaches would be great even without the filling! So many pastries hide a bad dough recipe under topppings. But not here. As good as the dough is, it is complemented by an extremely generous portion of fruity filling. (make mine cherry cream, pls). I love this place! I was introduced to it about two years ago and it is a must stop anytime I go to Austin. I love the cake especially the white cake. It never disappoints it is always moist and tasteful. This go round I also got the lemon bar and it was delicious nice tangy flavor and flakey crust. I've also had their kolaches and they were pretty good. A friend told me to ask for some soup crackers and I got those today and they were also very good they remind me of cheese-it's with a better twist yummy. They also have clean restrooms although today there was a faint urine smell as I entered the restroom. Today for the first time I actually browsed the retail area, clothes, lotions, candles, etc. I brought a bottle of Two Old Goats lotion, I've always heard this was some good stuff so I'm giving it a try. Can't wait till my job sends me to Austin again so I can make my pit stop at Weikel's. read more

We were told to go to Hruskas but this one came first. The poppy seed slice was not very flavorful. The Cherry Kolache was good. The service was horrible. Either the young girl was sleepwalking or hungover as we had to correct our order with her FOUR times, and my husband still didn't get what he wanted, which was a poppy seed Kolache. Amazing bakery and the small clothing store inside has small gifts for any gift. Love their chocolate cake and their cookies are amazing. However, my all time favorite in the cream cheese roll cake yummy yum‼they also have wonderful sips and pastas to bring home for dinner stop in and grab something to take home you will not be disappointed promise. read more

Great kolaches! Terrible customer service... My wife and I are from out of town and have heard great things about the bakery at Weikel's. Don't get me wrong, the kolaches are like nothing I've ever had before, they're amazing. However, while standing in line waiting to checkout, we overheard the man in front of us having a very pleasant conversation with the lady at the register. It came our turn to pay for our things and my wife, with a smile nicely, told the same lady at checkout "good morning" and she very rudely ignored us. Maybe she ignored us because we aren't exactly her "normal" customers as we don't really look like everyone else, you can probably tell we are Austinites just by a glance. Or maybe it's because we are two women who are married and that is pretty obvious as well. No matter what the reason we will most likely not be making the trip back out to Weikel's. read more

We travel this road often, however, we never make the exit to stop, until last month. My husband stopped off and picked up a half dozen kolaches for our neighbor who told him about Weikel's and picked us up 3, um, we are 5 so WTH!? I wasn't with him at the time, so I didn't get a say in how many he got for us. So on a different trip home I made him stop again, because dang it I wanted MY OWN KOLACHE:-) After hem hawing and oogling on which flavors to get, the very nice counter attendant recommended I check out the racks of pre-packaged kolaches. I found a six pack and asked her to tell me what flavors were in it, and she did, very nicely. Then I asked if she had anymore chocolate cream kolaches and she said they were out - bummer - that's what I came for. But low and behold there was one last pkg on the rack I found and grabbed really quick. These were baked and packed that morning. Then my husband returns from the bathroom and starts his hem hawing and oogling. So we've sucked up about 5 minutes of her time..no sweat, there wasn't anyone else at the counter looking for help. My husband asks her if she gets tired of indecisive people like us and she says..if i can be honest? it's people like you that make me wanna come around the counter and slap the shit out of you!!! OMG we were laughing so hard. My husband told her he could relate from his butcher counter days. We made a FAST decision on the rest of our order and walked away laughing with her telling us how awesome we were. Really loved her attitude, and the kolaches are ridiculously good. I only wish we hadn't stopped at Mikeska BBQ and gotten lunch at Weikel's instead- their lunch counter had some really delicious looking stuff. read more

Okay, so let's just get this out of the way - The bathrooms here are pretty sweet. I always make a bathroom stop here on my way from Houston to Austin. I think it's pretty awesome that the handicap/family friendly stall has a changing table and sink as well. A few years ago this wouldn't have mattered, but a 2 year old and 2 month old later, I can totally dig that feature. I married a German/Czech guy whose granny used to make homemade kolaches for every family gathering. I'd like to think that I know my ethnic baked goods pretty well now. That being said, I love theirs! The cottage cheese danish and apricot kolache are my current favs. I topped my danish with fresh strawberries when I got home. Delish!! My husband can't get enough of the poppy seed kolache. It's always been his pick. I tried their new chocolate kolache and I wasn't impressed. I didn't even finish it. I love their coffee set-up. I can always count on hot decaf and a variety of different creamers. (Why is decent decaf so hard to find?) If I want to live a little, the selection on the cappuccino, latte, etc machine is nice as well. Last time we were there I got my daughter a grilled cheese sandwich that came with a little baggie of potato chips. I don't know...I thought it was a pretty cute little lunch! The grilled cheese was pretty darn good too. No complaints there! The little shopping area is nice. I'm always tempted by the adorable children's items, but never looking to spend quite that much cash. This is a must stop place on our trips between Austin and Houston. read more

What's the Fuss About? There is nothing necessarily wrong with Weikel's, but then there's not much right either. It is just a big store behind some gas pumps. At one end is a bakery counter with kolaches and other bakery items for sale. While they seem to be popular with lots of locals stopping in to buy a boxful, we couldn't understand why. A kolache is just a sqare of pastry with a depression in the middle. Some kind of fruit or cheese is placed in the depression. The fillings all appeared a bit too day-glo bright and everything looked like it would be tooth-achingly sweet. We chose the apricot since it looked like some real apricots were in the filling. It was...OK, nothing special, meh. I absolutely love bakery items, especially pastries. But this didn't do it for us at all. read more

I was introduced to thise place several years ago by a coworker on our way to Houston. It was super good. Back in May, on my way to New Orleans, we were heading down 71 and I was looking for this place from the road and couldn't find it. It looked like it had been demolished and a new gas station put in. Well this past weekend, on my way to Houston, I saw the highway sign, and figured I would pull off and check it out. To my surprise, it WAS the new gas station. The whole building had been rebuilt, and was much nicer and bigger. Same great food. I certainly pigged out on a few of the goodie. Hands down a "On the way to Houston" favorite! I love stopping at this place on my way to or back from Houston. They have incredible deli ham for some reason. I love the tortillas they use on their breakfast tacos; they seem like they are freshly made and are thin and tasty. I always order a ham and cheese breakfast taco and just love it to death. I've even thought of driving the 60 miles on a Sunday morning just to get another one and then turn around and come back to Austin. That's how good it is. read more

I'm from Houston and I swear, there is no better place to get pies anywhere in Texas than this little gem of a place. The sandwiches are also really good and fresh. It's a good thing I don't live closer ...I'd have to be put on insulin. I love to bake and this place is the only place I'd buy a pie...I love my crusts and Italian meringues, but these ladies do an amazing job. My favorite kolache is the cottage cheese, only because the others are a little sweet for me. If you're passing thru La Grange, this is a must stop. read more

Great option for Kolache ordering online. Super fast shipping, reasonable prices, and no outrageous minimum order. The kolaches aren't as good as the ones I can get locally from an Amish bakery (these are a tad more industrial and have less crunch topping) but they are still tasty, and they ship. read more

Weikel's has enlarged and expanded from what was there previously. Maybe you just need gas but how could you not go in for a treat? Have stopped here many times, and it's almost always great service and very tasty food. However, on Christmas Eve last Saturday, I encountered a young male clerk at the checkout who needs to understand about giving customers the benefit of the doubt. Especially when a woman says her grown son paid for the bottle of water she's holding. Son took his snacks to the truck while I carried the water and selected more items to purchase. hmmm...wut's this kolache stuff??? i was told to get the pecan rice krispy treats. now im bummed i missed out :/ also tried the pecan cinnamon rolls. they were both fabulous! i was so afraid they'd be sickeningly sweet but they were perfect! leaves u enuff of a sweet tooth to have more! :D all in all, a really memorable texan experience. we were able to spot it off the freeway as "the bakery at shell gas station". i swore we wouldnt find it with a description like that, but there it was...a gas station sign and a bakery sign on the freeway. the folks inside were super nice. got to try all these pecan snacks and a breakfast taco (which i think is just like a mini-breakfast burrito). read more

Toasted turkey and cheese was delicious. Toppings were generous and fresh. I honestly didn't think I would be so impressed by a sandwich from a bakery/gas station. The desserts are amazing too. Go to the counter and order rather than pick up a prepackaged one. Service was quick and friendly. Last trip from Austin to Houston, we tried the place in Ellinger, and it was fine. This time we figured we'd give the competition a whirl, and boy was I glad we did! Weikel's will be the new standard stop on this trip. The kolache were light-years better, the dough was heavenly. The poppy seed filling just perfect. Also had a sausage and cheese pig-in-a-blanket. Yes, the dough is kind of sweet for this pastry, but it was still very enjoyable. My kids had cinnamon rolls which they said were great. Prices were very reasonable. My only regret, like others, was that I didn't bite into one until we were already driving down 71. If I had in the store, I would have certainly picked up more!!! Yum! read more

This is the nicest, cleanest, and best rest stop in La Grange. The bathrooms are spotless and up to date with jet air hand dryers. The food is fresh including homemade tortillas, breakfast burrito's, any flavor kolache's, and as many pickled veggies as your mind can fathom. It's without a doubt the freshest bakery I have been in compared to West Czech Stop, Collin St. Bakery, and many others. read more
