Regrettably, reading all of these recent Webpass reviews has given me the motivation to write about my terrible experiences with this company.
The facts: Like Danny D., I live in the Oakland/Berk area. I pay for an advertised 100Mbps/100Mbps connection. I live in a building of about 80 units. Been a customer for 1 year.
For years I put up with the headache that is Comcast. On top of the high prices & terrible customer service, there's the constant upward bill creep and the accompanying game to get it back down.
Imagine my delight when I got a flyer on my door advertising this newly available service - no contract, no equipment req'd, 100/100 metro ethernet from a local company for only $50/month! The very next morning I called and scheduled an installation. The installer showed up on time and was as professional as I could ask.
For the next month, I was in heaven. I'm an IT professional and a serious media buff. I was now the proud owner of an internet connection my clients would drool to have. Looking out my window I can see the Clorox building; I bet they don't even have a connection this fast!
I have no cable/satellite service but use my smart TV to watch things on Netflix, Hulu, the like... Things just worked! I could watch an HD movie, download apps on my phone, maintain a VPN connection, all at the same time and without missing a beat. I thought to myself "this is real telecommuting"...accessing remote servers/clients was so fast it was like sitting in front of the screen hundreds of miles away.
I really wanted to like it, for the first month or so I did. Irregardless of the time of day, I could hit 75/80Mbps up and down. Latency was the lowest I've ever seen for a residential ISP.
Sadly, this is where the honeymoon ends...
For the past year (and especially the last 2/3 months), the quality of the network has hit rock bottom. Not only this, but their technical support department has completely failed to address my concerns.
Like Danny, I am able to correlate the time of day with my network problems. During off-peak hours, say 3AM-3PM, I can usually pull ~65/65Mbps.
Peak hours, 3PM-3AM, I am lucky if I can get 10 Mbps down/25up.
What does this mean to non-geeks? I can't watch one netflix movie or one youtube video without having it randomly pause. If I'm lucky, the pause will last a few minutes and start playing again, but usually it will never resume. Mostly I will have to quit and relaunch whatever I was watching. Talk about a pain!
Want to buy some music on iTunes while playing CoD online on your 360? Fugghetaboutit!
Need a solid fast connection because your client just called and their server is down? Nope! Better run to Starbucks!
In short: during peak hours the connection is nearly unusable. Not only does bandwidth (the size of the tube) slow to a crawl, but latency gets much higher (how long it takes to get from end to end).
I have submitted ticket after ticket and made phone call after phone call to Webpass support since November of last year. I even posted on their twitter! To date, I have not gotten any sort of resolution and no communication of a plan to fix it either. Not even an acknowledgement of "Yes, we know there's issue in the area, stay tuned."
Usually support will ignore my tickets and not return my voicemails. I had 6 tickets of various age showing in their system, all showed Open - No resolution (and no reply from them). To their credit they did ask for my IP once, on the 3rd or 4th ticket. (what kind of ISP doesn't know their customers IP?)
I know, that if I left 6 support tickets open in my queue for months, with no updates or movement, or attempt at a follow up; I'd be fired. This is completely unacceptable.
The most recent ticket is coming up to a month old now. Finally, I have gotten somebody to listen to me, but I've had no validation of a serious problem. I've sent speedtests almost every single day showing the poor quality of my link.
Also bugging me, support still has not answered direct questions I've asked, like "Is WebPass service here 100Mbits into the building that is shared by all customers at my site? Or, is it 100+ into the building?" I've also asked multiple times for a plan of action from Webpass, still waiting on that too!
My logic: Webpass delivers 10% of what they promise, yet they expect a 100% payment. I made a fair offer of 50%, which was denied. I know for a fact that other ISP's would have seen the sound logic and accepted. Most, probably would have refunded the entire affected period.
Most people would not have tolerated these conditions and service for so long, but I am often in a position to guide companies with their choice of ISP, so it's my duty to see this through. My Webpass business clients pay ~ $2,000+ monthly. My client list is also fairly long. All I can say, is that's a LOT of potentially lost revenue.
In conclusion: If you live in East bay, save yourself the trouble and headache and get Comcast. #xfinitywasbettr read more
