Let me be clear, if I was rating ONLY the food, it would be a 5 star rating, hands down. The steaks here are simply fantastic - I have had both the bone-in filet (special), as well as the 16 oz filet and have been simply wow'd by each steak. The presentation is fantastic - sizzling plate, sliced Luger style and the butter that slowly soaks into the beef - awesome. The flavor - with just the right amount of searing, while maintaining a perfect inside texture (medium rare is perfectly prepared) - very, very nice. Even the sides, the complimentary house salad and onion rings, along with the (recommended) cream spinach and hash brown potatoes - outstanding. The other bonus on this place (some see as a negative) is the BYO policy. I prefer bringing a nice $20-30 bottle of wine, which at most places, would run you $75-100. Not only does it save on the tab, but allows you to immediately focus on the menu and all it has to offer. The fifth star has to be withheld for 2 reasons. 1) the atmosphere is simply odd. I think I have it seen described as 'Germanic' - which is apropos. Having been to a German steakhouse or 2, I can agree; its bright and open, unlike most American steakhouses that have a dark bar, dim lighting and a hushed-type atmosphere. Its really not a terrible detriment, but still feels a bit awkward. 2) the service. In a word: clumsy. Silverware dropped, side dishes spilled on the floor, inability to 'sense' when we were ready to order, receive the bill, etc. All of these (combination of 2 visits) seemed out of place for a Zagat rated restaurant with a price range where it is. If you've got a steak craving--Wayne Steakhouse will definitely deliver. The table receives a complimentary salad first, and a side of lightly breaded fried onion rings with entrees. Both complimentary dishes are a nice touch. If you feel like having a drink with dinner, it's BYOB. I'd recommend starting with some of their Oysters Rockefeller, raw oysters/clams on the half shell, or shrimp cocktail. The steaks are cooked in the "Luger-style"--broiled at a high temp, directly on the serving plate, in what I'm guessing is a mixture of tallow and butter. Nicely seasoned crust, and always cooked at the requested temperature. I've tried the filet, ribeye and various sizes of their porterhouse--all are knockout examples of what beef should taste like. Recommended sides include the "German" potatoes (home fries with sweet, caramelized onions) and creamed spinach. If you have room for dessert--you're on your own Cowboy. I went for dinner during the weekday. There was a pretty good crowd for a Thursday night. The atmosphere is nice. The restaurant is very clean and service was very attentive. We ordered the seafood platter and steak for three. The seafood platter had chilled lobster, shrimp, oysters, and clams. Although the seafood platter was nicely presented, the seafood did not seem to be very fresh. The lobster and shrimp seems to have been previously frozen. The steak was a porterhouse. The steak was cooked perfectly (we ordered it medium rare). We also had the German potatos, mushrooms, and spinach. All the sides were well cooked and the German potatos were particularly delicious. Dessert was pecan pie with fresch schlag. The schlag was thick, sweet, and delicious. Overall, it was a very good dinning experience with good food. The restaturant will probably become better as more people hear of it and there is greater turnover of food to make things l ike the seafood patter fresher. The wait service was excellent. read more

We stopped in today for lunch. Lucky to find the place since the sign-age is really bad. The address is 2230 Hamburg but the storefront is on the side street behind Primo Pizza. The decor is OK, not that much going on. Service was fine but just a bit awkward. It was evident that they do not staff up for lunch. The chef was acting as the host, still dressed in his kitchen whites. The waiter was nice enough but well past retirement age. There is a bar in the back but for now this place is BYOB. Odd for a high priced steak joint. What also was a bit odd was that the daily specials - maybe four or five - were all fish. My guest had a cheeseburger with fries - very nice. I had the steak sandwich with a side of sauteed mushrooms - also quite good. Good food but a bit more than I would spend for lunch. Someone else will have to tell us about the rib eye and porterhouse. During lunch, we noticed the chef walking across the side street to the local butcher shop and returning with several packages. High level summary - steak was delicious but poor service makes the trip to any other steakhouse worth it. Red flag #1 - no website. Clearly they are not interested in being contacted directly regarding feedback prior to such information being posted to the world. So here goes. My husband and I had a reservation for 6:30PM on a Saturday. We were celebrating a special occasion and came dressed business casual. No hostess or reservation book open at the front desk. Just a handful of pretentious waiters slouching at the station and sizing you up as you walk in. We mentioned that we had reservations but it fell to deaf ears. We were offered the 2 worst tables in the house. One 2-top closest to the crowded entrance and another very small 2-top awkwardly placed in the middle of the serving traffic. We took the awkward one over keeping our jackets on throughout dinner. However, we noticed that almost all the other 4-tops were seated with 2 people. When our waiter arrived, we inquired if we could move to one of two open 4-tops around us. We were told that those were reservations to which we reminded him we had. He stepped away momentarily and came back with a halfhearted apology that it was not possible. We watched as future couples that arrived were seated at 4-tops. Still no hostess or reservation book in sight. I highly doubt anyone was double checking if they specifically reserved a 4-top for their dining occasion nor do I believe that multiple couples all made such a specific request. Needless to say that given the opportunity to seat a couple at a 4-top was obviously available, we were never offered the option to move over to one. Even though it is BYOB (which is fantastic), we chose not to drink that night but had to ask a waiter to pull the wine glasses to give us some more room on the already tiny table. This should have been a no brainer to them given they were obviously not being used (oh and it's a fancy steakhouse) but don't expect to be asked either. Not their style for the service to match the cost or the service you can receive at every other steakhouse out there. We also had to stop another waiter halfway through dinner to refill our water. Unacceptable. Meals come with bread, complimentary salad, side of fried onions and homemade schlag (whipped cream) and strawberries. The only reason this review is getting any stars is the food. The bread, though not very visually appealing, was light and soft with just enough chew. But the butter was straight from the fridge and tore through it as soon as you tried to spread it. The salad was nice, simple yet effective. We ordered the porterhouse for 2 and were not disappointed. Great flavor and presentation. We split a baked potato that was a little too simple for our taste (just came plain with a side of sour cream) but the addition of the fried onions on the side helped. Then the nonsense really picked up. We were only around 45 minutes into our reservation and the hustling out the door began. When asked if we were done, I kindly said, "No but almost" with a smile and was returned with a disgusted look from the waiter. I was looking forward to the schlag as I love homemade whipped cream but sadly it never came. I watched a couple near us receive it but we were offered only a dessert menu. When we declined ordering a specific dessert, the check was promptly dropped on our table. I stopped a waiter to ask if the strawberries and cream were complimentary, but quickly realized that he was probably a bus boy (he looked to be very young and seemingly horrified to be asked a question) and said he didn't know but could bring me a dessert menu. I said thank you and no worries. Towards the end, a woman in a plaid shirt showed up at the front (she is mentioned in other reviews) but was seemingly only concerned with certain guests. I can only imagine that she was probably the owner, part owner or manager of sorts but clearly not interested in everyone's experience. Finally and I hate that I even have to say this out loud but it was mentioned in other reviews so I feel that our experience is not isolated. We're an interracial couple and one of us is significantly browner than the other, which in today's world should be a moot point. But in certain places, you can't help but feel it's not. When looking around, it was painfully obvious that both employee and clientele diversity is not a goal of the establishment but the treatment we received only furthered the horrible possibility that it might have been a factor. That's all I can say on the matter but looking for suggestions on other steakhouses to try. And I don't know this Peter Luger fella, but this place is bringing him down. read more

Yay! I'm A fan! Welp, I ventured to Wayne Steakhouse with a great group of friends, two of which had been before and recommended this is the right place to enjoy our night. So wow ok Wayne Steakhouse has got the goods. This place does have more than steak but I may never know it well. I jumped right in as did the rest of our tables for a great porterhouse that was cooked perfectly. The appetizers and side dishes were all fantastic! The restaurant itself is on the smaller side but it is clean as a whistle and the service is top notch. The cook came out and checked if all our steaks were to our delight. I expect this place will expand in the future. I hear that owners and many of the cast and crew here are from Peter Luger's and that is not a surprise. Great to have this quality in beautiful New Jersey! Steaks come cooked to perfection, everytime. If not, ask for a replacement instead of complaining on Yelp and feeling good about yourselves for complaining. I'll first say that I do not write many reviews but after much hype my family and I ventured out for Easter Sunday and made reservations. The hype /rumor had it that the chef was a former chef at the famous Peter Luger steakhouse. The menu is pretty different. Everything is a la carte. Bread and salad were standard for the table. Group of 4 people split 3 appetizers. I will say the grilled calamari was very good, raw half shelled clams were subpar. For main dishes our table got to see how three types of meat were served - bone in rib eye/ filet mignon/ and NY strip. side orders were all extra (baked potatoe, asparagus, creamed spinach) The aged meat was prepared in an extreme flame because the bone and top layers were very charred. Some personally like this way. It was different but not what I expected. Th major turn off was the showing off of the hot plates.. The food was brought to the table sizzling like fajitas at an applebees. Major turn off before I even cut into the meet. My only return to this place would be for filet mignon, I tasted my sister's cut and that was exactly what filet should be. And the cut was a huge portion. All of my previous visits have been great. But something has changed. From the ambiance to the food. For the worse.... Have they changed hands or management? I can only guess they have... The big salad bowl was just placed at the end of the table when it used to be served to us. The steaks were just put out on the table when they used to serve everybody their first portion. I miss the white tablecloths and attentive waiters. The steak was just ok. Ordered steak for four, medium rare, and half of the steak came out medium well. I had my two sons, nephews and brother-in-law with me and didn't want to make a big deal at the table. Maybe this is why there were so few people there on a Friday night? This place USED to run with Peter Lugers, Morton's, Del Frisco's and other upscale steakhouses. But no more. Not worth the $400+ for dinner now. I doubt I'll go back..... too bad. Excellent steaks, BYOB. If you want to go to a NYC quality restaurant without all the nonsense that comes along with going into the city just for a good meal, this is the place to go. Bring your own bottle of red, and be prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks. My friends always rave about the bone in filet, which is awesome. I've always been a fan of ribeye, so that's what I usually get when I come here. Either way you won't be disappointed. Furthermore, if you don't try the bacon (more like a slab of juicy, sweet grilled ham) at least once, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. I have been told it gets slammed on Friday and Saturday nights and to make reservations or whatever. That problem solves itself if you go in on Thursday or Sunday. Just walk in, eat, drink, be merry. Want to experience a steakhouse like Peter Lugers without having to go to Brooklyn? This is the place for you. In fact, IMO this is BETTER than Lugers, yes I said it. Unlike Lugers, this is BYO (which is UNHEARD of for a steakhouse), you get free salads and fried onion string dish w/ your meal (since when do steakhouses give freebies?) and also unlike Lugers, you can order other awesome prime steaks like the bone-in Ribeye (highly recommended for any Ribeye lover). The head chef/proprietor here was formerly of lugers, and this place beyond exceeds the Luger experience. Start out with the thick bacon slices and tomato and mozzarella, order the seafood tower with humongous shrimp, lump crab meat and clams, you can't go wrong. The steaks are cooked to perfection, and are dry aged from the Midwest. Porterhouse for 2, filet, ribeye, there's something for every steak conosseur here. This is a hidden North jersey gem... I have visited this fine restaurant consistently for the last 2 years and always find it an ample substitute for taking the trek over the bridges into NYC. The staff is friendly, and make you feel welcome,. The dry aged steak rivals that of NYC Without the hassle of tolls, traffic and parking. In addition, being a byob, I can bring very fine wines to stand alongside the steak main course and make it a wonderful dining experience without the expense. read more

All the food I had at Wayne Steak House was delicious. From the complementary salad and onion rings to the steak for two to the coffee at the end. Steak had great flavor, cooked perfectly, and was tender. I can see why people travel from around NJ to try these steaks. FYI it is BYOB. I have to give the place three stars overall though based on the rest of the experience. I went with a table for two on a Sunday night. I went knowing about the high prices and I was fine with that assuming the food and service matched. The food did. The service didn't. When ordering the steak for two, we asked how long was the steak aged. It wasn't on the menu and I know it must be aged for a long time. The waiter didn't know! He had to go to the back and check with someone. How embarrassing. The staff should know the menu, the food, and its details like the back of their hand. Other small things... Only a few tables were occupied when we arrived but we were sat at a table that had no table setting on it. It's a little awkward to sit at a table and have them set it while you are seated at it. I could have sat at any of the other 15 tables that had been set or waited 2 minutes. Also the lighting above our table from the wall lamp was so strong it felt like we were under an interrogation spot light. Overall a dinner for two with the steak for two, one side, and dessert cost around $200. The food was delicious however the level of service didn't match the price tag or food. I've been to this place a number of times: birthdays, anniversaries, graduation celebrations.. you name it! Here is why: 1) THE STEAK IS AMAZING. Out of the dozens of times I've been there, there was only one time the steak wasn't excellent. It was actually a bit cold, which was weird because the oil was splattering everywhere off the plate when it came out. Anyway, all the other times, steak was excellent. 2) THE SALAD IS FRESH AND DELICIOUS! Their salad is filled with fresh tomatoes, onions and sprinkled with blue cheese. It's excellent. The bread that also accompanies the salad is warm and delicious. 3) The service is great. The staff are attentive, constantly refilling EVERYTHING! I've even called ahead once to let them know I was bringing a cake; they accommodated my requests accordingly. Personally, I think it's better than Peter Luger's, especially if you factor in the classy but comfortable ambiance! read more

Recently went with the family to celebrate a birthday. My first clue should have been that the restaurant was nearly empty on a friday night! You would also think that with an empty restaurant the service would be great. Far from it. Service was elementry at best. The food was way overpriced for the quality delivered. Bland side dishes, salads with wilted leaves, tomato stems, and mushy cucumbers. Soggy onion rings, and steaks that looked boiled instead of broiled! The fact that my steak was swimming in half an inch of melted butter made me lose my apprtite. We filled a bowl with the butter from our plates. When you need to cover the taste of your steaks with a stick of butter, you know you are in trouble. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I will never be back. People were friendly and that is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. Definitely not even close to being worth the prices they charge. I was really impressed by this place! I actually called to see what their dress code was and the girl on the phone was so chill and said its casual, you can wear a hat, blah blah.. And when we first got there the place was totally unassuming, like underneath a billiards and was nothing special from the outside, so I assumed it was a laid back kind of steakhouse, nope!.. Walking inside it was pretty obvious they were going for upscale dining, It was like a notch under a Peter Lugers or Ruth Chris.. And the prices were FANCY.. Definitely expect to drop some dough here. For a party of 4 we got two strips of bacon as an appetizer to share, all ordered steak (3 of us ordered the filet and 1 ordered the sirloin), we also shared a holy moly dessert which was HUGE (ice cream sundae and sooo good!) we spent over $300.. Granted it was worth it, but just wasn't expected considering the conversation I had with the hostess. The steaks were so tender and were cooked perfectly, they also came out sizzling which was a bonus. The bacon was take it or leave it, I've had better at other steakhouses but it was still bacon so still good! Overall, this was definitely a 4 star restaurant bordering on 5! I would highly recommend for a good steak & a good time.. Oh and on a weird note, we heard (but didn't see) a fight break out between a couple of cooks in the back. Perfect steak, I had the 16oz filet mignon and my wife had a Brazilian lobster tail. We were celebrating a little. "I was cutting a medium steak with the side of my fork!" It was actually funny has the elderly host walked up after we were seated and gave us a bottle of Peter Lugers steak sauce, and said he did not like the sauce "Too sweet". I agreed; "A good steak needs a good sauce, a great steak needs nothing" We also had the well done german potatoes, "amazing", garlic asparagus "perfect", onion rings "steak house style" and house salad "very nice, too many onions". No bread or salad plates are given and when we asked for new plates after bread the waiter was annoyed. The waiter never asked if we wanted any drinks so we just drank water. My son was late so we asked the waiter to recite the specials for him and said he said "All of them?" Two weeks before we went to Wayne Steak House we ate at Del Frisco's in the city. I kid you not when I say that Wayne Steak House has better tasting steak and better sides. As soon as you walk in you are greater and brought to your table. I suggest you bring your own bottle of wine since it is a BYOB, and nothing goes better with a steak than a nice red wine. Made a reservation here and drove 40 minutes to a restaurant with no hostess, organization or tables to seat the plethora of people who were waiting after having made reservations. When we arrived just before 8:00 pm they were seating people with 7:15 reservations. No one spoke to us, took our name or acknowledged our presence for the 25 minutes we stood there. We were told lots of tables were on dessert and we would be seated soon, but we saw a room full of tables first placing orders.
