I've been to Washington Commons several times for drinks, most recently last night. I have to forewarn you, my experience here is mostly based on the fact I've met up with friends and family here, so I'm predisposed to like the place due to my affinity for them as well as how much I like the Park Slope / Prospect Hights area. They appear to have a nice beer selection (I'm not a huge beer drinker...I usually stick to hard liquor -- I'll have a double jack neat, please), and the bar set-up is nice. The lighting is fairly dim, but I enjoy the ambiance that brings. Lastly, they allow dogs there, which is awesome! Each time I've been here, my cousin's dog has accompanied us there. He is a magnet for humanity, and the patrons of the bar that have come up to play with the dog have all seemed to be pretty friendly. I'm sure I'll be back. read more

I like supporting neighborhood bars, and this is on my block. But in a neighborhood surrounding by amazing places to drink like gold star, weather up, covenhoven, and bearded lady, I find it hard to justify coming in here. Selection is fine, but don't order a cocktail more complicated than gin and tonic. As an aside, it generally smells like stale beer and clorox in here. read more

Bartenders and patrons alike are friendly; I was drinking Kwak and had no fewer than three people ask me about the funny glass (yep, they serve it traditional-style!). Very laid-back. I'm not sure what stands out about this place exactly, but I really like it. They have a great beer selection and lots of good seating including an outdoor space. Also they play movies, which is unique, and typically give out pretzels and snacks if you ask. Last time I was in they had on Dark Knight Rises, then Avengers. What a great change of pace to have a beer and talk about Batman (possibly) dying at the end when you're not in the mood for say, sports or loud music. I should probably rate this 4 stars, I'd go 3.5 if I could. read more

No explanations on crazy high tabs. Good bartenders have been replaced with hipsters who have never been behind a bar before. Save your money and go somewhere else. Prospect Heights is a terrible neighborhood with awful bars, overpriced drinks, and annoying locals. Now that I've scared away any possible interlopers, I hereby declare Washington Commons as my favorite local bar. There's nothing fancy or distinguishing about the Commons: it's just a local spot where locals hang out after they do local things. If you don't understand this as a motivating reason to go here, good for you: there's one less person who can despoil my favorite local drinking hole. The draft selection is good, and the beers are reasonably priced. Their outdoor patio is ridiculously large: it's the perfect summer spot for first dates or spontaneous gatherings among large groups of friends. Thank God this bar is in Brooklyn, or else there would be a gazillion douchebags waiting outside in line to play beer pong on an outdoor table underneath a shitty hotel. In summary, Washington Commons is a terrible bar. read more

Been there couple times now. Charged different prices for the same drink. Don't ask the bartenders anything....they might get offended - especially if you get them away from talking amongst themselves. Probly received some of the worst bartending services there in while. This place smells terrible inside for whatever reason! Drinks are very reasonably priced, and the bar tenders are really cool. Outside patio is nice, but the seating is rather uncomfortable and the tables are falling apart. It can get incredibly loud inside, as well, but the upside is that you can watch great movies by the bar, which I would actually come back for, but definitely not for the smells! read more

Almost forgot I came here last week on my exploratory tour of Prospect Heights. This bar is serious about its beer. There are more than 15 types on draught and they rotate regularly. There are a few I've never heard of, and I drink a lot of beer. And they have Old Speckled Hen! Mmmm, so smooth on a hot summer night (even better on a cold night). The atmosphere here is very chill. If I lived in this hood, I'd probably spend a lot of time damaging my liver at the Commons. read more

I've been going to WC for over three years as I live right next store and it's just generally a really great vibe. It's perfect for a quiet date, a solo drink, or to bring a large crowd for a rowdy time. It really accommodates all. It's also baby friendly if you're a new parent trying to get your drink on. They have a pretty solid beer list and a full bar with pretty straightforward, cheap drinks. Nothing fancy here and you can bring your own food. Happy hour is $2 off everything. Great hipster bar with a nice ambiance. Nice selection of IPAs. We stopped to kill time & enjoyed their happy hour that include $4 bloody marys, home made. To my surprise they were great. It's not everyday I just order bloody Mary's at a bar but they were so good & refreshing that I couldn't stop drinking them. It was nice being surrounded by intellects for a change. Fantastic beer selection! Great variety of Belgians, American craft, and other interesting things. And everything comes in the appropriate glassware. The bartender was helpful and knowledgeable; when the beer my boyfriend had asked for ended up being out, she immediately poured him a little sample of something she thought he might like. Happy hour was awesome! $2 off of everything goes a long way towards soothing the burn this beer drinker has experienced upon moving to New York, though the prices at Washington Commons are comparable to bars in other cities that serve the same beers. The garden out back was really great for hanging out and having a pleasant and relaxing drink. It was a little packed, even on a Monday night, but we still found a nice corner under a tree. One star off because they allow smoking in the garden. This is probably a plus for some, but when I spend $8 or more on a special beer I want to be able to actually taste the beer, not the marlboro reds of the smoker 10 feet away. Also, my boyfriend saw a rat. He says it was a really cute one, but still. read more

This is a great bar. Excellent beer selection. Very good prices. Awesome patio for when it's warm out. Nice seating inside if it isn't. The servers are friendly without being too effusive and one of the male bartenders is SO INCREDIBLY HOT. I miss him and will probably return to Washington Commons soon just to gawk. It's a big bar and garden that has fairly bad service. They are either understaffed, rude, or both. Roll the dice and visit!

I promised to update this review after I went here more sober. WELL, that didn't happen. But I'm still leaving it at 4 because they kick you out of the backyard at 12. I think it was 12. But came here after yet another epic house party that involved way too much Brazilian rum on the rocks and we had more than half of a snickers cake and over a dozen home-baked cookies made by yours truly. My friend has qualms over keeping leftovers in her fridge so she wanted to take it to the streets. We oddly found one lucky pair of dudes with a pint of Ben & Jerry's that seemed overly enthusiastic on cake. But we were not striking gold or the land mine until we stumbled into here. NOT MY IDEA. And proceeded to pass out cake and cookies to other incredibly drunk people that were lounging on picnic tables. Oh, Washington Commons, you always seem to end in fortunate tragedy. People are horrible. "Most attractive people are narcissists by nature". Quote of the century. You will find plenty of them in here. read more

Nice neighborhood watering whole. Lots of microbrews on tap. Happy hour is Mon.-Fri., but I was here on a Sat. It's actually pretty spacious with a little patio in the back and 2 count 'em 2 unisex bathrooms. Spaceballs was playing on the tv. Music was a good mix of alternative. Patronage was mostly young whites, but there were a few female minorities, one senior citizen, and later a young couple with a toddler. Let it be known that this is a beer spot. You don't have to be a beer guy/gal to have a good time here, but it helps. I used to be super into beer, I'm just not anymore, but I came here with someone who was. It was fine, because she got something cool with a long name, and I got a cocktail, and everything was right with the world. It was a nice night so we went out back and sat outside. That was due in part to the fact that the outside was actually better lit than inside! Oh dark bars. Either way, this is a great local spot, in a neighborhood that has a lot of those "good local spots." And yes, this also counts as a cool BK bar! I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with that assessment. We weren't here on a weekend, so I'm not sure how packed it gets, but I'm sure they do OK. Even on a Wednesday night, this place impresses me. Cheap brews- $5 Green Flash IPA beer- 7.5% alcohol- and quite tasty. Then I ordered my staple drink- vodka on the rocks with lime- ONLY a dollar more. Great service at the front bar. some tables up front and back as you walk towards the "garden" WAY back. I love that fact that I walked in at 9pm on a Saturday night and there was a 6 foot tall great dame hanging out by the bar with his (really cute) owner. I'm not a local to this hood but I can see why it's a fast fav. From the same owners of my beloved 4th Ave pub, it has the same chill vibe. It's good beer/drinks and good bartenders. With a leave your pretentious attitude at the door policy and it's lovely wrap around bar with exposed brick walls, this not so local to me bar might suddenly become my local fav. read more

There was enough changeover to grab seats, but gone was my semi-quiet, spacious escape from the house. Anyway, if you don't mind a "scene" go anytime. This is what a neighborhood local should be ALL about----a cozy, inviting space (including an outdoor garden area), delicious Belgian and somewhat off-the-beaten-path beers (such as one of my faves-Smutty Nose Pumpkin Ale), and a great vibe all the way around. hit this up after seeing the writeup in the gothamist. we got there a little after 9 and it was still mellow. i got the green flash and my roomie got a g&t (due mostly to passover prevention of beer intake). the bartender was super friendly and handed me a copy of the beer menu upon getting to the bar. the spot it chill with original store front windowed door. the music is pretty loud so you do need to shout a bit to be heard. front bar is nice and not crowded like most les bars at 11. there's a back section with more space and as michael s. mentioned a back patio. they are still working on it, but i can't wait for the unveiling this summer. i'll be back for the happy hour 3-8pm with $2 off beers. read more
