Pretty good food--would come here on occasion while I was in college, and of course, when the parents were visiting. Yet another place we returned to when we came back for college reunion...there's nice outdoor seating, & they can accomodate pretty big groups....I think there were 10? of us the last time I was there. Walter's is an okay place. You don't get a lot for the price you're paying. The first time I went, I got the Taste of India pasta, which was fairly interesting. The pasta doesn't have a sauce but rather has a bunch of flavorful ground lamb on top of it. This is fairly good, but you tend to run out of ground lamb, leaving you with a dish full of plain pasta. Not too exciting, in my opinion. The pasta was also a little on the overcooked side. The second time I went, I got a kabob. The kabob was trying to mimic a Persian koobideh (or perhaps the Afghani version of this), but it totally fell short. The thing was entirely flavorless. At least the rice was interesting, but I don't ever count on the rice having to save a dish. The service is nice, but ultimately, this is just a glorified diner, right down to a pastry counter in the front. read more

Recently had granddaughter's 30th birthday party at walters. When I received the bill I noticed there were several charges that we were unaware of when the reservation was made. These charges were not mentioned to my granddaughter when she made the reservation. These charges included setup fee, cake cutting fee and several fees confusion about to charges for Unlimited mimosas. In my opinion you were very misled by the person at Walters who set up the party. So what we were told, and after a $300 deposit, we estimated our bill would be an additional 12 to $1,300, totally around 1500. When I received the bill it was almost $3,000. Additionally, the party was supposed to end at 4:00 p.m. by 4:03 p.m. they were coming in telling us we had to leave and rushing us out like a herd of cattle. I really felt like we had been heavily ripped off and cheated as if they were in a hurry for us to leave. In my opinion there was a reluctance to display that gung ho customer service attitude towards our group. I am 74 years old and I've seen a lot of things during my lifetime. In my opinion I had the distinct feeling we were treated The Way We Were because we were not of the blue eye and blonde hair persuasion. They took my $3,000 and then treated us like crap. For being pretty much the creme de la creme of upper old-school village, Walter's pretty much fails to deliver. You would think that for such a pricey restaurant, you'd be getting something special. Well, sometimes it feels like I'm just paying for a nice place to sit, with some nice table cloth, and silverware that's heavier than aluminum. When the food comes out, it smells better because I've been waiting 30-40 minutes. I'm not sure if the higher price means it's higher quality, or if its because they serve older clientele that have all the time in the world, but it sure takes a heck of a lot longer than you think it would. The food itself can best be described as "meh." I mean, it's not bad, but you kinda wish it was better. Other notes... The seating is nice, and the service has that old, genial "I've this a thousand times" feeling to it. The bar is pretty expensive, but the drinks are made well. This is not a good singles hang out, but it is a good place for a date or for a business lunch you know you won't have to pay for. The chicken is never bad (thankfully). The steak can be (unfortunately). The iced tea is pretty good. The portions are okay. The wine selection is bleh. If you're looking for a nice place to go where your hard-earned dollars will really go a long way (besides EZ Take Out), go for Tutti Mangia which is nearby and has better parking. I have fond memories of Sunday brunches at Walter's Restaurant in the Claremont Village back in the 90's. During my last visit to California I stopped by and discovered their food is still amazing and the décor got fancier! Interesting art still hangs on the walls and one of my favorite items still shines brightly on the menu: The Mozzarella & Tomato sandwich on French bread with pesto sauce. Next favorite...the Afghan fries. The word fries does not do this treat justice. They are fresh potatoes dipped in batter and deep fried yet they are so much more. I have not found anything like them anywhere. There is outdoor seating available that is really quaint where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the Claremont Village. I'm new to the area, and my boyfriend and I are looking for somewhere new to eat, and it's a special night. We wander across Walters, what grabbed us at first was that the Restaurant smelled good and looked kinda cool. I had the Aush, which was a ground beef and noodle soup with a yogurt, mint and other spices broth, I enjoyed it, very different from anything I've ever tried. Starter: Spicy Corn Cakes - A sweet corn cake, covered in black beans, a fiery hot salsa and a dollop of sour cream. We both loved it, the soft sweet of the cake, mixed with the spice of the peppers, the beans were a great addition for texture and the cream was a perfect finish. His dish: Queema Kabobs - ground lamb Kabobs, something he is used to and has had many times, he very much enjoyed their rendition, but what got him was the seasoned basmati, he loved it. My dish: Lamb Shank: A lamb shank roasted in Tomatoes, onion, potato and garlic served over white beans and spinach. My shank was falling off the bone tender, and the roasted bits mixed with the "sides" was wonderful and flavorful. Dessert: The Sampler Plate - Our favorite was the Pecan Toussie, it was just fantastic. I will be back for those and a cup of coffee if nothing else. There was a "bread" similar to biscotti filled with nuts and topped with cinnamon sugar, Chris loved it, I thought it had a great flavor, but it was too hard for my teeth (granted I have bad teeth, this is nothing new). The wedding cookie, I have had a lot of these buttery, crumbly, powder sugar covered goodies, they served one of the best I've ever had, the inside was so light it was almost like well made sponge candy. The Carmel brownie, eh not my fave, a bit to rich, and almost the consistency of fudge. The Baklava - the pastry was light and flaky, but I didn't care for the spicing on the filling (I'm spoiled by my boyfriends version, I think he puts crack in his). It's a great space with helpful service, and I like the lunch options, especially the Afghan food--the event food leaves something to be desired, though. LUNCH ====== Most recently, came for lunch and had vegetarian chili w/ cornbread -- delicious down to the last bite even after I was full! First time, last fall, I ordered an Afghan eggplant? dish (I forget the name?): huge portions and very tasty. Service is attentive--drinks, coming by with bread options in a large basket, taking our order, refilling our drinks was all done very smoothly. PARTIES ======= Came to several college functions last May 2012. One was in a private room with beer and appetizers. The appetizers were all clearly pretty cheap and greasy, which was disappointing. But at least the drinks were quality. This place used to be better at night as a Bar. It was very rowdy yet had many places to sit and sip drinks. The only reason I'm giving this place three stars is because of the service which was very good. The food was not. I had ahi tuna salad and the dressing had so much vinegar I coughed throughout the entire meal, and it was not just my salad my friend also had the same salad and the same problem. We had a third person taste the salad and they said the same thing. It also had canned corn in it. What kind of restaurant uses canned corn on a salad and charges $19.95 for it? I could do that myself at home and not pay $20 for a lousy ahi tuna salad, which by the way there was very very little ahi tuna Another person at our party had the Greek salad which came with lettuce feta cheese and some cucumbers, she had to ask for Kalamata olives and of course there was no pita bread. I have never heard of a Greek salad without Kalamata olives or pita bread/chips. Another lady at the table ordered tacos and the tortillas were cold. Definitely very disappointed. This review is only on my experiences at the patio bar. Located on the side of the restaurant. The first time I visited this place it was quiet, it didn't look like it was open. As we walked towards the back there is a full bar with seating and fire pits. As we ordered a few beers and hung out a while we noticed the crowds started coming in, definitely a locals bar which is a cool and chill vibe. With a variety of drinks and beers to choose from very reasonable prices. Our bartender (I can't remember his name ‍) was so nice. He made the best Bloody Mary's and recommend the Tandoori fries. Let me tell you about them. If you haven't tried them, they are a Must whenever you are in the Village. They have so much flavor that is so unique, with a mixture of seasons and spice's they are the perfect appetizer. After the first order I'm always left wanting more. I've gone back serval times and always enjoyed my time there. Over all this bar is pretty chill and I'll be coming back again and again. read more

I went for an association meeting and they put us up in a great little private dining room out in the patio area. The decor was colorful, fun and exotic in an Afghan sort of way. I shared a basil, tomato and mozzarella salad. It was covered in a nice basalmic vinagrette and was served with lettuce and other greens so it took a while to eat (and savor). We also shared a crab and avocado sandwich which I didn't love at first bite -- but after that, got used to and by the end was really loving the flavors not only of the main ingredients but the texture of the whole wheat bread and some really luscious swiss cheese. And, with that, we had the Afghan Fries. I know they weren't great for my weight, but they were delicious and very unique. I would recommend that whatever else you choose on the menu, be sure to get some of those. I would definitely go back and bring any dining companions who are fellow adventure eaters. read more

I had been a loyal patron of Walter's since 1989. I had booked parties through the years and overall you can say I'm a satisfied customer. A week ago, an out-of-town friend and I had dinner. I ordered Angel Hair pasta and decided to add shrimp to the order for additional $2 according to the menu. When the waitress took our order, she asked me how many shrimp? I didn't understand the question because in my years of eating out, I was never asked that. I asked "What do you mean?" She said one shrimp cost $2. I was totally taken aback and I just said 2. The shrimp was medium sized, not even jumbo or large. I found this ridiculous so I went back and talked to the manager thinking that the waitress made a mistake. The manager confirmed that yes, they charge $2 for each additional shrimp because that is not in the menu. Really? You added shrimp on top of a dish. It's not like you created a totally different dish. All I can say is WOW! Not going back, just didn't sit well with me, GREEDY came to mind... My mother and I came for lunch on a Saturday. We sat on their heated patio and enjoyed the quiche Lorraine, an Aash soup, vanilla bean ice cream and the best pecan pie I've ever had. I really recommend the aash soup; it is unique and a little tarte with a hint of mint. It was perfect for a cool December afternoon. I've gone by the place a million times and never bothered to set foot until yesterday. It's a delightful place. I gave it three stars only because my meal was bland. That's my fault. I ordered the curried Turkey sandwich. I love curry, but the blandness of the Turkey neutralized the curry and not the other way around unfortunately. I just had my first experience at Walters today and I am pretty impressed. The decor of this place is just amazing. There are two places to dine (outdoors and indoors) but the indoors is sectioned into two places (outdoor patio and indoor courtyard). We sat in the indoor courtyard area with great ambiance provided by a fountain, some nice art decor, and comfortable seats and tables. The waitress' were nice and were always around when we needed them for refills and bread. When it came to explaining some of the food they did not hesitate to give suggestions and explain our choices. I ordered the Gravlax and my lady ordered the Afghan patty. We switched when we received the food (haha, she saw the salmon and had to have it). The naan that came with the meal wasn't the best I have ever had but the patty was pretty good. We also ordered Afghan fries as a side and they were delicious. The food here is possibly a 3.5 stars but the service and seating deserves a bump to a 4. read more

I'm a big fan of Walter's. I end up here a few times each month... mostly for lunch... and am almost never disappointed. Their lamb dishes are probably the best. Don't forget to order a side of Afghan fries with some of their green chutney. Other dishes are very good, too. Also, the bread service is nice, especially when you get the bread fresh out of the oven. By far the best part of Walter's is the staff. The owners are delightful people who greet their guests with a welcoming smile. When I used to have breakfasts at Walter's monthly with a regular visitor, our waitress learned quickly that we would always have the same dishes and would just start bringing coffee, juice, water, and our respective dishes... always with a smile. Nathan is the best, what an honest and sweet waiter!! He found my wallet after I had dinner yesterday and when I couldn't find it under my table I gave up finding it. I don't know about the whole Aghan angle of this restaurant; all I can say is I was dining there in mid-afternoon and ordered: - Club Sandwich (with lamb) - 'Afgahn' fries The sandwitch was great (but again hard to mess that up) and the fries, along with the mint chutney dip was excellent. The service was just OK, but then again at 3pm, most servers were distracted with either eating or setting up for dinner. Menus is too confusing and long-with breakfast on the menu all day but won't serve all items all day. I think there had to be over 100 items at least! Also dished were listed more than once throughout the menu under different categories. Cheese quesadilla was ok but had an odd after taste. Salmon with veggies and mashed potatoes have me a stomach ache afterwards. It's supposed to be an afghan American restaurant so do it.
