It's been such a long time Yelpers..and I've missed you all. You know, kid, wife, work, etc. This leaves little time...nevermind, that's not what you're here for.
As a girthy type of guy, I like to keep my taste standards relatively even...only high brow when necessary but sensible enough to know that I am not going to get a Houston's steak from Ono Hawaiian. Let's be reasonable...
...which leads to the absolute horribleness of Walter's.
I've only been once, last weekend, with the wife and some young folks in the family. Of course, the pictures looked great on the website and it seemed as if this would be a nice hangout spot to start frequenting without all of the low-brow collegiate crowd.
Now, I am pondering the hours of my life wasted there that will never return to me.
When we arrived, it was around 9:30 and we went straight to the back patio area where there were plush couches and, for some odd reason, fire places that were turned on. The fire places looked great but we had to request it be turned off...although they only turned it lower. On a nice summer evening, around 72 degrees or so, why this was on in the first place is not within my fathom limits.
Onward.
We first believed that there were servers in that area so we waited about 10 minutes before my wife had to literally stand up and chase down a waiter and ask if we could get some service. Our mistake, thought we could eat back there considering they had the appetizer menu there. Apparently you had to go to the front to eat. Fair enough, a bus girl led us to a table and, very nicely, told us the kitchen was about to close so we should probably know what we wanted as soon as our waiter came. Perfectly understandable and we made it our business to do so.............
but the waiter didn't come until about 9:58. Now, the bus girl brought us water as well as bread. Juan, our server, simply took the order and, i kid you not, did not return to the table for a loooooooong time. I ordered a Fat Tire, which is an American beer, and an important plot point to this review later on.
The calamari, brought, of course, by the bus girl, was actually pretty good. My wife and I think ourselves to be calamari connoisseurs and found it and the sauce that accompanied it pretty tasty. Well done, Walter's.
Meanwhile, my sister-in-law and her friend asked for more bread...they asked Juan when he came, asked a bus boy the one time he came...then finally asked our MVP busgirl and she delivered within minutes.
Juan didn't bring the food, Juan didn't check on us, Juan was pointless. He brought the dessert my sis-in-law and her friend ordered and the check. Those were the only times we saw Juan.
I ordered the grilled salmon with rice and vegetables...my wife ordered the lobster pasta. Usually when food comes, there is pomp and circumstance to it in a place like this. Considering the $22 dollars for each plate, I expected a little sauce, maybe some seasoning...perhaps some taste.
None of the above dear friends.
The food was horrible. i hyperbole not. It was horrible. I'm fat and I barely got halfway through. There is nothing else to say there, it was that bad.
Super bus girl comes back for, about the 12th time, to us and I convince her to let me give her the tip rather than Juan....
sidenote: Juan gambled and lost. He saw us and I think he figured we wouldn't be tipping well, he had another table in the front that he got to at least a few more times than ours and figured they'd tip better. Super bus girl received a $20 tip from us on an $80 bill. I gave him $5 with a friendly note that said, "please pay more attention to your customers."
Walter's alleges $2 dollars for ALL domestic beers on Friday nights during Happy Hour, which it was. Domestic = American so since FaT Tire is brewed in Colorado I kind of figured.... it would not be $5.75. I flagged down Juan and asked why the price? He first tried to say it was only on domestics and was flipping through the table menu of domestics...I pointed out to him that Fat Tire IS a domestic beer and THEN he said, "well, it only applies at the bar." Um, where else would the beer come from in this fine establishment? Look, it wasn't worth grabbing a manager for almost $4 considering the over-priced crap meal we'd had so I just said, Ok Juan and kept it pushing. However, it was further evidence that the servers not only have no training, but Walter's has very arbitrary policies...that the servers aren't trained on.
But wait...that's not all.
We then go back over to the plush couch area because, you know, we have a babysitter, so one crappy meal isn't pushing us back home early. Head for the bar to get some drinks and enjoy the rest of the evening...
I'll spare you the details but the bottom line is training. The servers and bartenders have no training and it is literally pointless to give this place another shot. One star because of MVP Busgirl. read more
