We ordered the following Papaya salad - so fresh and perfect. Not too spicy. Fried tofu- wow!! This was one of my faves! The sauce here was insane. Nasi goreng- the crispy egg was fried. Like actually fried in panko. So good. Japanese curry- was great, but a little heavy Whole fried fish- so good we literally left nothing but the bones Jasmine rice- simple dish, super tasty with the Thai leaves and lemongrass. Intriguing menu considering some in our party is of Indonesian descent! The cocktail menu is splendid and we tried the Red Envelope mixed with gin, hibiscus tea, egg white, and coconut pandan juice. The restaurant itself is beautiful and even seating at the wood counter felt intimate and cozy. Food: 3.5/5 stars. The chicken satay was pretty dry, and the flavor just doesn't compare to true Indonesian satay. The Fried Beef Ribs had great flavor but it was very hard on the teeth; additionally, for the price point the ribs could have had a touch more meat. The portion sizes in general were small. Nasi goreng as mentioned had only 1 scoop of rice. For the total price of the meal (and especially the $18 satay, 1 stick for $6) I had higher expectations. Service: 4/5 stars. Came here for dinner. I will preface this by saying that I tend to review Asian restaurants more harshly simply because I'm more familiar with the cuisine. FLAVOR (3/5): 1. SOM DTAM SALAD: The papaya salad is good. Tastes like your typical Thai papaya salad. 2. DUCK LUMPIA: Starting off strong with the duck lumpia! Super yummy and comes with lettuce wraps to dip in the sauce. That chili dip was bomb. 3. PASTEL UDANG: The pastel udang tasted like dim sum filling inside puff pastry. The dip was pretty spicy (which I enjoyed, but beware if you can't handle spice). I probably wouldn't order this again. 4. KWEE TIAUW GORENG W/TOFU: I liked this dish! I think the tofu was a good choice - I couldn't get enough of the crispiness. Although I liked the Kwee Tiauw Goreng, it tastes very similar to Pad Kee Mao, which you can get at any Thai place for half the price. 5. RENDANG MAMAK: Okay, this is where things start going downhill for me. I'm not a huge fan of sweet and savory, particularly with meats, and the Rendang Mamak, Chashu Pork, and Fried Whole Fish are all of these things. HOWEVER! If you like sweet/savory (ex. fried chicken & waffles, brown sugar bacon) then you may enjoy this dish. 6. CHASHU PORK: The chashu pork was cooked well and I liked it, but it was very heavy. One bite and I was done. 7. FRIED WHOLE FISH FOR TWO: I always try to order a branzino if I can find it on the menu. So far the catalog includes Zinqué's branzino and Bavel's. Wallflower's branzino unfortunately ranks last for me. While the fish was fried, the sauce took away most of the crispiness and the overall dish wasn't anything special - definitely not worth the price point. SERVICE (3.5/5): Service was fine. Made a reservation for 8:30 pm and didn't get seated until 9 pm. I wasn't sure if this was because earlier reservations came late, but communication was lacking nonetheless. AMBIENCE (3.8/5): We were seated outside, which was okay, but I think the ambience would have been different if we were seated inside. Outside it was kind of crowded and the seats were uncomfortable. PARKING (2/5): I ubered, but there seems to be only street parking. It didn't look like a whole lot of street parking, but I can't be sure. TAKEAWAYS: I've had good Indonesian before (I'm looking at you Simpang Asia) for half the price point, so I wouldn't come back to Wallflower again. When I arrived on time for dinner I was told that even though I had a reservation seating was "first come first serve" and I had to sit a the bar with my date. The host was still condescending, rude, and gave the worst customer service I've experienced in over 20 years in this industry. It was a Wednesday and wasn't even busy. No hello, or smile from her, just pure annoyance. Later, she verbalized her anger towards us (passive aggressively over our shoulders to the bartender loudly so we could hear her) I confronted her conversation about us and she stormed off. She was upset because we moved down one seat since we couldn't see the food and wanted to know what we were eating (and would have happily moved back had she ask in a way any respectful adult should). I brought it up to the bartender, since he was the one she was talking to, and he did nothing to repair or apologize for her behavior. We basically spent almost $300 to be treated like we were an inconvenience. This type of service is not cool anymore. I'm a server, and would NEVER speak to a guest like this. No thank you! I'd give the food 4 stars (5 stars for the crispy duck roll - that was by far the standout), but I'm docking a star for the smallest portions I've ever seen! I'm honestly surprised that no other reviews mention this -- maybe it's a recent phenomenon since a friend recommended this place after going in the fall. The biggest offender was the pepes ikan (banana lead wrapped market fish), which was $38 for MAYBE 8 bites. The flavor left something to be desired as well. We also got the fried rice and pad okra pao which were pretty good, but it was honestly hard to enjoy the food when we were so appalled by the portion sizes. It is a huge disappointment that this establishment has such bad staff service. Their food is quite good and it is usually a staple of ours in the neighborhood. However, we had a friend surprise our birthday girl from out of town and they refused to let him sit at our table of six claiming our reservation couldn't be accommodated with seven. Horrible experience. We made 2 separate reservations with another group of 4 and called in advance to request to sit together or near by. Showed up a few mins before the reservation time and the host (Jacob) was extremely rude and said that they would seat one party inside and another outside when 90% of the restaurant was empty. His justification was that his kitchen could not prepare food for two parties (table of 5 and table of 4) all inside. We said we don't mind not sitting at the same table at all but at least in the same room since we were together. He rudely denied us and was very clear that he didn't care if we left and was willing to lose the business just to make his point. When we told him that the resy app charged us $25 per person for the reservations and we didn't want to get charged for cancelling the reservations since we intended to dine there he said well I can't do anything about it that it was up to the management. We ended up leaving quite disappointed and disturbed in the service and rude behavior the host had. Both myself and the other group emailed the restaurant about the charge and the incident and to refund our credit cards for the $175 charge for my group and the $150 for the other group. Not only did they not respond at all to either of us but when we both disputed the charge on Amex they failed to explain that we did show up for our reservation but that they denied to seat us in the same room. Anyway, we will never go there again and disappointed in their service, lack of communication and unjustified reasoning for not being able to seat two separate parties in the same empty room. read more

I liked the tamarind sauce, as it was not too sweet or acidic. The bean sprouts also had a freshness that balanced the fried tofu. - Nasi goreng (3/10): i would pass on this one. The portion size is really small and it basically comes with a scoop of rice, about 6 pieces of unflavored crispy tofu, and a small portion of pickled cucumbers. I ended up eating the appetizer tofu with the rice in order to season it more. - Kway see tok (noodles) (6/10): not great but also not terrible. The portion was more decently sized than the nasi goreng. By itself, it was slightly bland, so I mixed it with the curry which helped improve its taste. - Japanese style curry (8/10): the best dish out of the ones that we ordered. It was not super spicy like some curries are, yet still had a very strong coconut flavor. There was a good blend of vegetables from the carrot, potato, and eggplant. It also pairs well with the noodles. WOULD I COME BACK? Depends on the group that I am with. This is SUCH a cute spot. They have a very unique cocktail menu- the smoked lemongrass, indah, and monkey king were absolute staples. We started with the duck lumpia- 10/10. Probably the highlight of our meal! They are stuffed with duck and packed with flavor. You can't skip this item. We then got the coconut rice, rendang curry, and noodles. The curry and rice were phenomenal and if you like spice, this is the go-to. The noodles were good, but we didn't have room to finish and unfortunately forgot our takeout container at the table. I set this reservation looking to have a nice, somewhat fancy dinner with my lady for my 30th birthday. As it turns out I was in for a wild ride. First, we were seated inside in the back between a nook with trash bins and what looked like the bathroom or kitchen doors. The table was right underneath the speakers bumping something I think I heard at a rave once. In any case it was way too loud to maintain a conversation and with so much activity going on it was super overwhelming. When we asked to move, the waiting staff were very kind and were able to move us into their outdoor seating area which was much much better. Once we were in the outdoor seating area we were able to get comfortable. We realized after some time that the nook we were seated in didn't seem to get a lot of attention for the wait staff we waited some time after deciding what we wanted and had to flag a busser to call the waiter and they didn't make us wait for much longer. We ordered the duck lumpia, the kwee tiauw goreng and the rendang mamak. We also ordered a pair of cocktails, the indah and south-eastsider. The cocktails were tasty and were great to get the ball rolling. The duck lumpia was a phenomenal starter, with the dipping sauce a the strong MVP. The kwee tiauw goreng had a phenomenal texture and presentation. Unfortunately the dish seemed to be missing some umami. It lacked spice and was under salted. I wonder if something was missing, even the chicken and egg added to it were bland. Ultimately I ended up mixing it with the rendang mamak which was excellent, tender, and was also complemented well with rice as recommended by the waiter. About two thirds of the way into the meal, we noticed that there were rats on the wall barrier in our section of the outdoor seating trying to climb the walls into the dining area. It was comical but disturbing and definitely wrecked our appetites. After the rat sighting we were trying to play it cool and also kind of urgently trying to leave, but it took a while for the wait staff to find us again. Overall, the wait staff and kitchen did a great job, but the arrangement of tables and awkward seating situation near the rock climbing rats made the overall dinner experience a serious disappointment. read more

This is one of my FAVORITE restaurants. I had tried Indonesian food once before, but hadn't been wowed. When I heard of wallflower I knew I had to give it another chance, because the menu looked great. Since then, I've come back three times. The beef rendang is a MUST. It's a classic Indonesian dish and they make it so well here! It's flavorful, tender, and the meat melts in your mouth. You can't go wrong with the nasi goreng or the half jidori chicken. Both delicious! The green papaya salad is also incredible and very fresh. The banana leaf wrapped fish is great, but pretty spicy. The duck lumpia is also fantastic!! A few items that are worth skipping over: the sate is nothing special, and you can get that anywhere. The Japanese curry is also less flavorful compared to other items on the menu. As for drinks, Singha is one of my favorite beers! And the the monkey king cocktail is good if you like tequila. The decor and ambience are stylish and aesthetic. I love the outdoor patio area.
