We got the Duck Lumpia (definitely get this), Snap Pea Salad (definitely get this), fried rice, and Pepes (barramundi wrapped in banana leaf (excellent). Duck Lumpia was my favorite but everything was fabulous. Our server, who's normally behind the bar, was great. He was super accommodating, made sure our menu picks were balanced and didn't order too much, and he was very accommodating with my off menu drink request. Wallflower absolutely blew me away. The food was so ridiculously good that I genuinely left wondering how this place doesn't have a Michelin star (or at least some recognition). Every dish tasted thoughtful, unique, and restaurant-week-level refined. We ordered the nasi goreng fried rice, noodles, beef rendang, yam dish, and pea salad. Flavor-wise? Almost everything was incredible. The beef rendang especially was packed with flavor, and every dish felt elevated and intentional. My only reason for knocking off a star is the value. The portions were tiny -- not "small plates" tiny, but more like one-to-two bites each while still being priced aggressively. By the end, I felt more impressed than full. If the portions matched the quality, this would've easily been a 5-star experience. That said, if you care more about exceptional food than portion sizes, this place is worth trying. a friend of mine who lives nearby recommended this spot. neighborhood parking was relatively easy for a friday night. we got seated immediately and the vibe was bustling and the service was attentive. now for the food... snap pea salad: i always jump on a seasonal snap pea salad. the dressing was heavier than i expected but it did well to balance out the earthiness of the sprouts. great starter dish but a bit small for the price tag. duck lumpia: this is a must order for me. the duck meat was super rich and had that teeth-sinking bite to it. the lumpia wrapper was audibly crispy and the spiced vinegar of the dipping sauce came with a bright acidic punch to balance the richness. beef rendang: crazy depth of flavor and spice. the meat here was also perfectly tender and pulled apart with east. a killer small plate with a big impact. would also order this again. a note on the rice: the chicken/coconut rice was pretty dried out and hard. also in hindsight i feel there's so much flavor elsewhere, an order of jasmine rice would've been a better complement barramundi: it came out wrapped up and extremely hot and fresh. a very delicious, perfectly cooked fish with nice balance between the natural fish flavor and all the toppings wrapped up inside with it. def recommend if you like a meatier, flakier sea bass. manhattan: a nice drink but mostly tasted like a classic manhattan. also in retrospect woudlve gotten something more acidic instead of spiced to differentiate from the spice profile of the food. all in all, it's a bit pricey for me personally but a lot of the dishes we ordered were very delicious and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place. read more

Came here last night with my friend and my boyfriend because we wanted a fun Venice dinner with dim lighting and a disco ball. It was so fun! Also shockingly easy to find street parking nearby. Service was great too, we had a super sweet waitress. We ordered a bunch of things. The duck lumpia was easily the best thing like actually so good. The ribs were also amazing. Japanese curry was solid. The nasi goreng was fine... fried rice with a little chicken skewer doing its best. And then the new butter chicken they just added to the menu... I'm sorry but it had WAY too much cumin. Like it genuinely tasted like the lid of the cumin shaker popped off and someone was like "eh it's late, send it." I kept trying to convince myself it was intentional and sophisticated and then I remembered I'm allowed to have taste buds Overall really fun night, great vibe, most of the food hit. TLDR: Good, but not outstanding. The restaurant is beautiful, especially the outdoor areas. The server was very knowledgeable in the menu and I appreciate that. However, I do not believe the quality and portions were enough to blow my mind away for the price. I do think everything was delicious, but again- not super memorable. The Japanese yam is very sweet and tastes like honey. It's very good, but not worth $20. I do like the drinks- had the red envelope and thought it was delicious. Loved the ambiance, service, and food here. The waiter was super friendly and helpful with our orders, suggesting some delicious mezcal cocktails. We sat on the outdoor patio which was a cool vibe and had heaters to keep us warm. The food was also delicious - we tried: - papaya salad: super spicy (beware! When "street" is chic. I always find it incongruous to eat what is essentially street food at a fancy place. Imagine street tacos at a Ritz Carlton. It's kinda "off". I grew up with all this food in Indonesia, on streets, food stalls, restaurants, and even at my family's hotels, so I honestly was ambivalent about coming in, but my date was insistent, and I relented. I'm glad I did. They curated the right elements that melded perfectly with the vibe. Ambience matched service matched food. Well done. The duck lumpia was excellent. My date loved her papaya salad, which, while very tasty, was too spicy for my delicate palate. The rendang was interesting. On its own, it was tasty, but not as authentic as I'm used to, so I initially wasn't that interested. But then I paired it with the nasi ayam (chicken rice), and it was perfect! If you understand food chemistry, sometimes you need complementary elements to draw out a particular flavor compound. That's exactly what I unlocked, and I couldn't get enough of it. Wallflower isn't easy on the wallet, especially compared to other Indonesian restaurants in LA. It's hard to comprehend paying what I feel is double market rates, even triple, given the small portion sizes, However, in terms of overall dining experience, which I feel has fallen horribly in LA since Covid, Wallflower successfully managed to raise the bar on a very high quality dining experience. If you only want to compare food prices, this isn't for you. If you want an elevated restaurant experience for Southeast Asian cuisine, this is THE place. read more

We were a group of six people and it was my sons 25 birthday. We ordered 4 different appetizers and six main dishes. The portions were small but flavorful. Unfortunately the coconut rice was under cooked. Nothing was spectacular but everything was fine. The bartender and seeming manager was very nice. I would have given the entire experience a 3 star but our waitress, Aubrey, seemed to not care about us, and even seemed to outright ignore us. When I asked if there was a fee to cut the cake, she never got back to me. We had to flag someone else down who got her and when she told us it was $6 per person, she didn't even wait to hear it was ok, and walked away. Perhaps she didn't care because she charged us 20% mandatory tip as a party of six. No problem, we left quietly. The real issue came later: a $210 no-show fee. My friend, a regular at Wallflower, tried repeatedly and respectfully to resolve what we thought was a misunderstanding. The restaurant ignored all outreach--until the owner, Miles Dustin, finally called her. Instead of a professional response, he berated her for following up and refused to reverse the charge. He was combative, emotional, and hung up on her after saying she'd need to "let it go" if she ever wanted to step foot in his restaurant again. This Valentine's Day I took my fiancé to Wallflower to enjoy some Indonesian styled entrees before heading out to see GOAT - an unorthodox pick for a Valentine's Day movie I'll grant you. Let me start with the good. The food here is Solid. Better than solid, actually. I've been here twice and the beef Rengdang is the highlight dish. It's packed full of flavor and is the kind of entree that will have you jabbing at the crumbs with your fork. The Branzino was also incredibly fresh and served with an assortment of herbs, mint, and spices that really complimented the dish. I've also had the crab dip and it was delicious, but the price point to serving ratios made me skip it this time . If you're coming here for the food - you're going to have a good time. Especially if you like south Asian cuisines. Here's why it's not 5-stars for this pretty generous reviewer. The tables. I ate outside and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't uncomfortable 100% of the time. I'm a pretty big dude - 6'3 and around 200 pounds - and man did I feel huge at our table. We were outside and it was so cramped I could barely fit my legs under the table. At times it felt like I was playing operation trying to move the dishes around. Overall I was so cramped we only stayed for about 45 minutes after being told before sitting it was a strict 90 min max. The other issue, I think is the price. Look I write Yelp reviews often. Clearly, I'm a bit of a foodie who doesn't mind spending some cash on some good eats. But $200 for the meal I had...I don't know. I feel like it could have gone a lot further both in taste and quality somewhere else. You ever sit in a coffee shop in some small town and see a $500 painting on the wall from some guy named Arthur that looks like a kid did it at recess? And you go, "who the hell does this Arthur guy think he is?" That's a bit how I felt about the prices. The portions are delicious but small. Came here for dinner with my partner on a Sunday night. We asked to sit outside and it was quite comfortable, given it was "winter" in LA. The food was good and the service was really good too. Food came out fairly quickly. They had a vegetarian menu for me and that was great. All preparations are DELICIOUS! The yam and the tofu apps were great. The rice (Nasi Goreng) was really good too. This is a trendy Indonesian restaurant located in Venice Beach. Both the indoor and outdoor ambiance are aesthetic and relaxing. The food was flavorful and beautifully presented. If you can't take spicy food, please make sure you tell the server. I asked for mild for the flat noodles and it was still too spicy for me. We ordered the following: 1. Crab rendang dip: this was overly sweet for me. The shrimp chips it came with were unique, and gave every bite a nice crunch. 2. Beef rendang : my partner loved it 3. Rice with chicken broth: good 4. The base was coconut milk, rather than a Japanese dark curry. Pepes Ikan ($38): the fish was very good, but the sambal was amazing! A little salty, so I'd recommend ordering rice ($4) with it. Crispy Sichuan Beef ($28): has a kick! The waiter warned the table the pepes ikan was a bit hot, however we found this beef to be spicier than the fish! Rendang Mamak ($38): the favorite of the beef dishes at the table. The only wish was that the portion was larger, especially for the price! As mentioned, the food was incredible, however the prices seemed a bit steep. I was very interested in getting a mocktail, but it was $16. Lastly, the restaurant is a lot larger than you would expect from the outside! We tried the cucumber tofu salad, crab rendang dip, fried rice, beef ribs, wide noodles, and chasu pork. I'd definitely recommend the noodles and chashu. Both had the perfect amount of richness and heat to counter balance some of the fresher and more acidic dishes like the cucumber salad. Note that this restaurant has the majority of its tables outside with very few indoor spots. This Venice Indonesian eatery is just what Venice needed. It is wonderful. The staff is very nice and they get your order right the first time, even if you complicate it. Make a reservation. If not, there will be a wait. The hostess is kind and will get you in a comfortable where you will be happy. The while place is beautiful. We just love the interior. It is all kept super clean. The food is great. We decided to try several things there, as we have been doing for a while now. That way we can really decide if you want to come back. We will be back. We had jasmine rice, and a steamed rice with pandan, coconut milk and chicken broth. It was the best. We also loved the fried whole fish for two, cooked with miso sauce, a wonderful ginger salad and the outstanding branzino. Wanting more, there were a few of all, all sharing, we tried the crispy duck roll and finally the chicken sate. It was all amazing.
