This Walgreen's is average. Just plain-old average... it's convenient if you need some munchies on your way into Union Square or some change on your way to the Powell Street Bart... I've never used the pharmacy here but would guess they probably have one since they are a Walgreen's... read more

OPEN 24 HOURS! Several people have said this Walgreens is like all the other Walgreens, and that is pretty much true, same selection, same prices, etc. But the one factor that pushes this Walgreens to above average is it is open 24 hours. It's good to know the drug stores that are open 24 hours in the city, there aren't many of them and this is one. Another is Walgreen's on Lombard. File that in the back of your mind for when you may need it. You never know when you may need some medicine at 3 am to help you get through the night. read more

I became very friendly with this Walgreen's while visiting, located just two blocks north of my hotel it was the perfect location. It was always open bright an early in the morning for me to go in and get a bottle water for the day. It was always open early in the evening when I needed a caffeine fix, and as a bonus they had a special on Diet Coke while I was there. And it was also always open at 1am when I was headed back to my hotel room and allowed me to pick up some water for my room. Yes this Walgreen's is open 24 hours which was very nice for me. Also it was much easier to come here and get cash back than finding a WaMu ATM around town and I was shocked I didn't have more $41.34 debit card transactions from here. Oh one important thing I don't suggest getting any of the packaged muffin/cakes/rolls they all seemed to be stale at least the two I tried as snacks. read more

I've been to some cutty freakin walgreens. And this one is by far the cleanest. They're always stocked. It's 24 hrs here. And they process my expired film here. For cheap yo. I'm about bout it. Could care less about who works here or how I'm treated. I honestly believe they take the worst employees from every Walgreens in California, and transfer them to this location. Then they abuse them, cut their pay, and encourage their misanthropy to reach new levels before re-releasing their staff on the public. I go here practically every day (work on the block), and I try to be extra sweet, hoping to one day earn a little bit of help or politeness from the employees. Alas, I give up. The workers here are really hit and miss. Some are really nice. A select few are really rude and need to be FIRED!!! A lady or whatever named Lemy is super rude to everyone! Avoid her if you can. She's the short person with a butch hair cut and yells "NEXT!" ever so rudely when it's your turn in line. There are other workers here who also need to work on themselves. WALGREENS REGIONAL MANAGEMENT: I am writing to complain about not only the manager of this store, who is insensitive, rude and could care less about me who has been a regular client of this store for some time, but also the security guard or whatever he is who has followed me several times through the store when I come into the store first thing, very early in the morning. Every time I have entered the store in the past month, I am either followed or treated as if I'm going to steal something whenever I come in at this early a.m. hour. As a working business owner, I resent this fact and really would like to know WHY the manager, hasn't gotten past his own rudeness to take time to find out who his REGULAR CLIENTELE are??? As a local business owner, I have been a regular client of this particular Powell Street Walgreens for sometime. I am appalled that not ONE of the employees, most SPECIFICALLY the manager, has not taken time to at least be friendly, courteous and respectful. Instead, I'm treated as a thief while at the same time this particular Walgreens jacks-up the prices of products I typically buy EVERYTIME I shop there. (i.e. Smart Water) I am clear why the Walmarts and now the Walgreens of the world are getting flack --- they may be "convenient" because they're on every corner, but they're certainly not going to build customer loyalty with the way this particular manager and loss-prevention/security guard treats REGULAR clients like myself. read more

There seem to be some mix-ups with the reviews of this Walgreens and the bigger more impressive one a bit further south on Powell street. This is a much smaller Walgreens on the corner of Powell and Sutter. It's your average everyday Walgreens with your garden variety goods of every other Walgreens. There is one homeless man who regularly begs out front of this location. He's basically been there forever and loves to shake his cup in your face as you walk past, but he's harmless. Steer clear if that makes you uncomfortable. Not much else to say. If you need a pharmacy or some relatively inexpensive snacks nearby to Union Square and want to avoid the crowds of the bigger store down the street, come to this one. read more

Why the hell are ALL the hair products for African-Americans on the highest shelf in the store? I didn't even realize that they were up there because I was honestly expecting to see the usual small but well stocked selection of relaxers, conditioners and hair dressings somewhere within normal viewing height. But no. They are placed waaaay up on the top shelf. Almost have to break your neck to see what's available. This is bullshit. I think they do it to discourage blacks from shopping there. Every other Walgreens I have been in has it placed in the same rows along with the other stuff. Why not mine? I got irritated enough to ask the manager. His excuse was that it didn't sell much so they place it up higher. Well Mr. Manager, I think it would sell if you'd place it somewhere where one would think to look. Update - I'd advise shoppers to closely check their receipt verses the prices on the counter. This particular Walgreeds over charges - that is to say they charge more than the price on the counter in violation of California Law. California law says they have to sell the item for what the price is on the counter. Walgreeds has been cited for this by the authorities but continues to do this none the less. Back to our previously scheduled review - please read on... I sometimes stop in this Walgreeds on my way up the hill - it is mostly for the tourists and not aimed at the locals. I've found at times it is poorly merchandised like you go in to grab paper towels or toilet paper on the way home and the counter is empty. This store is a nesting place for tourists I'd prefer to avoid at busy times since they are all in a daze being overwhelmed with San Francisco. But The main reason I'm writing this review is to warn all of you to look at the stale dates on the food they offer. Many others have commented on the high quality food and goodies they tempt you with and I'm not above grabbing some when I'm in the very long checkout line. But then Again When I got home the fancy baked goods were stale dated and should not have been on the counter. So I would suggest all of you if shopping for "fresh fruit" baked goods or whatever look closely at the label so you don't get rotten food. I can only guess why things might go stale at such a high volume store which is almost always packed with out of townees - but I suspect the very high prices they get for the high end goodies means they don't turn over as fast as one would think and some of them go bad on the counter and are not pulled. read more

Perfect location in Union Square to get a high traffic flow, this Walgreen's and I have become very good friends in the total of 6 weeks I've stayed in San Francisco. Plenty of snacks and drinks so you don't have to pay the inflated hotel price for a can of soda ($1.75 for a 12oz at the hotel!) and all the other little necessities you need when traveling through the city. My biggest problems with this Walgreen's have been the bums and the employees. The bums wait outside like sharks waiting to attack. You walk outside and they start their usual begging for money. I took to speaking to them in Spanish and German just to get them to leave me alone long enough to get across the street. San Francisco needs to enforce a "Don't feed the bums" ordinance and maybe they will go away. (By "feed" I mean give them money.) The other problem with this Walgreen's is the employees. They find it necessary to scream "next" as though we were being processed for jail time. I don't think the couple speaking Japanese in front of me really understood the word better the louder you screamed it. They get an extra star for being open 24 hours and for letting me get $100 cash back when no other Walgreen's did. read more

This place makes me ponder. What will Gunter and Elise (having forgotten the tooth brushes in Mainz) will end up thinking of my country? Odd things --- like dandruff shampoo --- are locked up. Everything except the Alcatraz shot glasses is scattered and impossible to find. How will this disorder effect our stereotypical and hypothetical Teutons? I can't know, but I know it baffles and confuses me. Now, I'd also like to share a little story: One Saturday Night, 11:45 PM I was buying something at Walgreens (ice cream? A beef jerky dinner?) and I witnessed a terrible act of shoplifting --- terribly executed I mean. A couple of teenagers, dressed in their Saturday night finery (Spurs Jerseys), and nervous about catching the last BART back to whatever benighted bridge-n-tunnel pit that birthed them, decided to steal something. I don't get that logic --- do you? What confounds me most though was why they thought they were inconspicuous/skilled enough to get away with it. These kids were wearing sunglasses with blinking lights all around the rims! They could be spotted two shopping aisles away. Additionally, this is no sleepy small town Walgreens. Whatever shop lifting experience these teens possessed, the (irate, and vindictive) manager and bored security guard had ages more. The SFPD was waiting outside for them, and the manager was shouting for thier torture and execution when they stepped through the doors. The blinkin' shades gang was doomed from the start. So the gist of this Walgreens --- great selection of tourist kitsch and travel items, bad selection of essentials. Stupid Teens and long lines of baffled foreigners. read more

Uhhhm it's a Walgreen's, there's not much else to say . I needed bandages & aquaphor (which they didn't have) so I got bactraban (sp) instead. I had to make sure my poor little hands & knees had proper care! It was BUSY for 11:30 at night, but the clerks moved through the line with the kind of speed only a Walgreen's clerk at midnight could have. Weird things are locked up: I get the razor blades, but body wash? Very difficult to buy a box of condoms that hasn't been opened and half of them stolen. Call me paranoid, but I prefer my condoms tamper-free. I guess since it's 24 hours, they get a free pass on their wretched service and awful layout. It's also frequently full of crackheads and crazy people. The later you go, the higher the ratio of crackheads to normal people. But then again, it is Union Square. read more

This place is awful, I live very close to it, so I've purchased quite a few a items here over the course of the time. The following summarizes my experience: i.- The items are WAY over price ii.- The never have any stock, e.g. last time I wanted to buy eggs and butter, guess what, they didn't have any. After I asked a second lady where the butter was, since I couldn't find it, she keep pointing me to stuff like "Sweet Cream" and that crap called "I cant believe people think is butter", I had to clarify her what the word butter means only then to get a confirmation by her that they didn't have it. iii.- The MOST ridiculous situation was when I wanted to get a passport picture taking, I was expected to be taken to a dark room with a white background, a nice flash and seat, and so on .... what a poor innocent I am... Directly in the corridor where the products are stored they pull down a white background blocking the traffic of people in that corridor and while standing, they took a picture of a 2.1 Megapixel camera that was literally falling apart (it was put together with duct tape). iv.- The fact that a big chunk of the employees cant express themselves in anything other than cantonese, makes me suggest that either they offer crash courses in English so that they can properly interact with customer, or that they look elsewhere when hiring.... but of course that is only if the employer is not trying to maximize his benefits to the max. Look elsewhere for whatever you want to be, you won't find it here, and it so it will be late, expensive and come with extra frustration on the side courtesy of Walsgreen read more

I like this store on Powell Street. I think it's the most beautiful Walgreens in SF. Modern and charming at the same time. Great deli section, great Girardelly section, and numerous other items that you don't find at other Walgreens. Staff here not very well trained, but managers take care of the problem if one arises and are very helpful. read more

This is a great place to stay on top of because: 1) it's 24 hours and sells snacks that can help you avoid an outrageous room service bill or sketch diner rip off; 2) let's you replace essentials rather than having to pay in the hotel fit shop. As a disabled "frequent-flyer" who has 16 different prescriptions filled here on a regular basis, I have always received excellent customer service from the pharmacy. The key is to use Walgreens' call-in or online service to order the medications before you go, and then, before you leave home doublecheck that they are ready. They've opened up a new and expanded food section, which is great for us locals who just need to pick up some fresh fruit and milk and not traipse all the way to Cala or Whole Paycheck. Yeah, it sucks that everything here is on lockdown--definitely NOT the place to buy condoms or lube if you're shy. I'm not. You can load your Clipper card here for CalTrain, BART, Muni, and other transit systems who take it without fuss at the cosmetic counter. And about Lemy...she loves dogs! She's really a sweetheart and whenever I'd come in with my 115 lb German Shepherd service dog, her heart would melt and she'd pet him and chat briefly. So, bottom line, 5 stars for the pharmacy, especially the pharmacist. Lines can be long during the day and this place does get jammed with tourists. Also, the reviewer who wrote that the panhandlers outside were pretty aggressive is right on target. But...I once came here at 4:30 in the a.m. wearing a burka over my pajamas with leopard-print Polly of Hollywood mules. I don't know why, really. It was just the easiest thing to put on and I was jonesing for bananas and ice cream. And...I got waited on with politeness by the clerk and schlepped back up Powell. So, I give them points for being accepting of religious diversity. Or maybe the combo of being the masked BurkaBatLady with fuck-me pumps made them wait on me quickly to get me the hell out of their store? I stopped by here while visiting from Seattle. (But, dint be fooled. I moved in the City for three years prior, so this isn't a tourist's review.). I was totally impressed by the fresh and healthy food options and the modern, upscale feel of this otherwise ubiquitous chain drug and convenience store. I mean, sushi at a Walgreen's? That takes guts even just to attempt! Wait, there's more! Hard-boiled eggs! Fruit! Sandwiches! See pics. Wish they had one of these in Downtown Seattle or in DC. For now, I leave this Walgreen's happy to have found what I needed. Highly recommend you check it out if you're Downtown and need to a few small food OR drugstore items for the hotel room. read more

I just stopped in this Walgreens to pick up a few items. As I walked around the store, I could not help but notice the cleanliness and amazing organization of it. The store was also very well stocked with all its merchandise. I could not get over how neatly placed everything was! It is so rare to see, and I have not seen this type of effort in any store I have been in. I complimented the cashier and told him how much I appreciate all the work that goes into running a store. When traveling and forgetting to pack some odd or end, having any kind of drug store nearby is a boon. A chain drug store is fine, because if you really need something that you normally get back home chances are the same chain is likely to carry it in your traveling destination. Well, not totally true here in SF... especially since it is kind of in the touristy part of SF, which is understandable and they only have certain amt of sq ft that needs to generate the beaucoup bucks that keep the lights on in an expensive plot of dirt that is Union Square. So, not the best selection of wares, but good nuff to temporarily tide one over and a nice reminder to pack more carefully next time. Or be more inflexible with TSA and demand to see a manager when they try to confiscate half of your stuff. Yeah, that would probably go well. read more

On the way to a gig at a nearby theater, I always find a reason to stop at this conveniently-located Walgreens. Well, duh, it is a convenience store, so yeah, it is conveniently-located. Anyway, it is a tightly fit into the corner of Powell and Sutter, so when the lines are long, it is difficult to get around. It is near a lot of touristy hotels, so there are a lot people who like to stand around and block my way. It does not matter what language they speak; when I give them my look of death, they get out of my way. The chilled beverage an snack aisle could be better stocked. I always crave something they do not have. Also, it is located at the opposite end of the store, so I have to climb my way over several tourists to get in and out. It makes it a little less than absolutely convenient. The lines, as I said, can be long, but they go very quickly. read more

This review is for the pharmacy. Being in Union Square, this place packs with tourists quickly.. which is great, don't get me wrong, but if you're staffing a pharmacy/drug store that frequently receives a high volume of customers (many of them out of towners who don't frequent the pharmacy and need a pharm to call their health provider/doc to get their meds) -- staff it sufficiently! This staff is nice but slightly disorganized; I receive calls that my prescription is ready when, in fact, it is not but needs approval from my physician, and once it is ready, don't hear a peep from the pharmacy. It's kind of weird to have to keep tabs on your pharm. I understand the constraints of being in a busy area and always having to tend to LOTS of customers at once, but please adapt by hiring more pharm staff who pay attention to customer volume! read more

Well there's not much to say about Walgreens, I mean they have it all, pretty much. And they have some cheap stuff that might work for a while then just break. But you know that before you buy it. They have a pharmacy here. It's Not the biggest Walgreens either so there will always be a line and not the largest selection. The best part about this one is that it's open 24 hours!! read more

The location is convenient. The semi covered entrance does provide shelter from the rain for the resident street person, but.... Most of the products you want to purchase require an employee to come and open the glass case. I guess this helps loss through shoplifting, but come on, it is pretty inconvenient. read more

To me, a walgreens is a walgreens is a walgreens. I used to work at one, it has special place in my heart. But... ...the prescription department at this location is another story. The head Rx guy (you know, the one with his picture on the wall) is really nice. But there is this one lady that I interact with regularly (probably 10 encounters by now), that from what I've seen, should not be dealing with people. She is rude, ignores you, finds her non-business related conversations with coworkers more important, and doesn't listen to your Rx directions so that you have to go back and return a Rx you didn't intend to fill. One star b/c their check-out team is fast. One star b/c I like that head Rx guy. One star b/c they carry bus passes (cash or debit only). read more

There is a clear lack of communication with the pharmacy at this location. I've gone back to Walgreens on Powell three times within a week and still haven't received my prescription for various reasons. Based solely on the fact that the pharmacy here sucks, I'd give this place one star. I only added the extra star because, for the most part, everything else is just "alright". Conveniently located near Union Square and right next door to the hotel I was staying at. Inevitably I always forget to pack something when I'm traveling and it was so nice to be able to pick up contact solution and nail clippers. One morning I was waiting in line and accidentally dropped my Starbucks drink on the ground. I was so embarrassed but the Walgreens man was so nice and even asked if I'd like him to throw away my now empty Starbucks cup. Even the cashier was nice enough to tell me it happens and left me leaving much less like a clumsy dork. Here's to being more awake during my next visit! read more
