I arrived at around 8:30 for my 8:45 appt. I had already filled out all the paperwork online so check in was quick and efficient. I was called back promptly at 8:45. I was there for a basic eye exam. The "tech" performed most of the exam. She dilated my eyes and I showed me out of the exam room to wait for my eyes to dilate before seeing the Dr. Dr Compton came to fetch me after about maybe 15 min. He did his part of the exam. It was very quick but he did answer all of my questions. Upon check out I had to request a copy of my prescription. That took a few minutes. Now I am ready for some new shades !! Easy peasy. Arrived for my 8am appointment today to be told that my doctor was unavailable due to a death in his family from the previous week. I was told a message was left on my phone. THIS WAS A OUTRIGHT LIE AS NO MESSAGES OR MISSED CALLS WERE REGISTERED FOR MY HOME OR CELL PHONES. It also took 4 contact attempts earlier this year to FINALLY get a copy of my eye prescription. The doctors and medical staff are first rate but this is by far the WORST ADMIN/OFFICE STAFF I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. There are a number of really good ophthalmology practices in the Triangle area. Do yourself a favor and pick one of those and save yourself the hassle of dealing with this inept office staff. read more

Would have given five stars, loved Dr. Compton, front desk staff was just dismissive and rude. They were definitely doing you a favor taking your information. No courtesy, no good mornings, no thank yous. Just treated you like one of the herd. One woman was excitedly telling one of the receptionists about how she had a new puppy. The woman half smiled, nodded her head, and refused to engage with her. Seeing the complaints from others about the desk staff, this is pretty par for the course. I was referred to this practice around 3 on a Friday afternoon. They not only were able to see me but Dr. Compton correctly diagnosed my problem. I had a retinal tear which was a visual emergency. He referred me to Carolina Retina and I was able to have the surgery to repair the tear that same afternoon. Dr. Compton was great. He was very thorough in his exam, explained everything clearly, was patient, and answered all my questions. Thanks to him, my vision was saved. I'm now a regular patient and recently had cataract surgery done by Dr. Compton. He was great about explaining all my options, the pros and cons of each, and what to expect. The surgery was seamless, and I now can see clearly for the first time in years. I went with the Panoptix lens and am thrilled with the outcome. I highly recommend Dr. Compton for his expertise, patience, bedside manner, and thoroughness. read more

This is not meant to impugn the abilities of Dr. Compton, but merely to comment on the attitude of members of his reception staff and that person's facility for subterfuge rather than transparency. Here is the story of three incidents, with the last incident prompting my posting here today. 1. Dr. Compton was scheduled to do my cataract surgery. I had a really bad cold just before I had the first eye done so I called and left a message asking if that would affect the surgery. No one from the office returned my call. 2. When I got my prescription for glasses, I was surprised to see that I had a correction for reading. I called and asked about it...twice! No one returned a call. As the manager in the glasses store noted, " I guess you might want another provider next time." Incident three is the deal breaker. I had been having some issues with a marked " curtaining" on my right eye. Having had retinal issues before, I was aware of a possible problem so I left a call around 8 AM. No one called me back. I called back at nine and I got "Victoria". I calmly told her that I had a black curtain on my peripheral vision in my right eye. It had nothing to do with the cataract surgery, but I wanted to see the doctor on Tuesday, after the Memorial Day weekend. Note that I wasn't saying that day, but rather the next available full day of work. She blankly told me Tuesday was fully booked, to which I inquired, "Do you understand the problem? I am merely asking for the last eye specialist who knows my eyes to send me to a retina specialist". When it was a no go, even after that explanation, I said that I had planned on changing doctors anyway and there was always social media. Victoria didn't try to make it right, but the office manager did call me back much later, probably because of the social media comment. That is always a deal breaker. She said Victoria said I cussed at her, which was not only untrue, but unnecessary since I already had an appointment elsewhere and as an English teacher, I strongly feel the pen is mightier than the sword--or yelling at an uniformed individual. Tracie tried to salvage the relationship, but what good is it to have a doctor you can't access because a receptionist who is highly uneducated about eye emergencies or problems.' is his gate keeper? The doctor doesn't work in a vacuum. You need someone at the front desk who knows more than how to fill in a computerized calendar. I had said that the third incident would be the deal breaker, and given how this medical issue was handled, I am writing this review. I hope the good doctor reads it as all of what is written here is true, unlike the interpretation given by a staff member. I wish I had read something like this before using this group. Dr. Rusinek did Cateract Surgery on my Right eye in August of 2021 I purcased a Special Toric Lense [out of pocket] because He said this would correct Astigmatism in that eye 1st day after Surgery my eye was very Blury and was told this was normal,after several visits [day after day] my eye was infected . I then started taking 2 different kind of Eye Drops 5/6 times daily ]not cheap] and the eye was still blury.Dr, Rusinek finally sent me to an Eye specialists at Duke Eye Care In Durham NC. My first vist the Dr looked at my eye and said I had Rosacea eye infection an started on Doxycyclin pills ans it finally cured the infection [long story short ensed up seeing 3 different eye specialist at Duke 1 more Eye Surgery and my Righy still Burns an Waters all the time. PS went to get Glasses an after the Eye Exam my Right Eye still has Astigmatism, I will live the rest of my Life because of this read more

I've been a patient there for over 8 years, but things have gone downhill. Now you can expect to wait on hold for 10 minutes. You can expect to sit around in the waiting room well past your appointment time. There seems to be a really high turnover among the office staff and technicians. And forget about having anyone return your call if you have a question. after you wait on hold for ten minutes, you'll be told that you can leave a voice mail for the tech. Yes, you can leave messages but they will be ignored. No one will call you back. If you have any question at all, you should call, wait on hold, make an appointment for a couple of months out, and ask your question, but make it quick. Dr. Stone has little time for questions and explanations. read more

I had an eye exam here and I thought all was well until I went to have a prescription filled for my glasses and found a fairly large error in my prescription. We then called the office and whoever was working, the desk was very dismissive and refused to take blame for their mistake it was such a mistake, The computer system would not accept it as a prescription as I was getting a quote on eyeglasses! unfortunately I already had one set of eyeglasses ordered on this prescription sadly The 1st office didn't catch Wake ophthalmologist mistake which was "very Obvious" mistake quoted by the nice man giving me quote on new eyeglasses at BJ's optical. I now have to pay for a new eye exam and have prescription eyeglasses that are incorrect to the point I probably can't use them anymore except as a backup! wake ophthalmology needs to own up to their mistake and teach their employees better customer service I will never return there again! they've ultimately cost me a lot more money than expected shame on them! I have been a patient here for a few years after moving to this area in 2018. All was great until recently. This past March I went to them and was immediately sent that same day to a retina specialist. The treatments were good and I was released back to the care of Wake Opthalmalogy. I noticed in July my sight was not good in my right eye so I called around July 29th to get things checked out. I was informed that the earliest appointment would be October 29th. I was told by the receptionist that there was a pandemic going on and the geriatrics had come out of an 18 month stay at home (hibernation I believe she said) and there was nothing that could be done. She was adamant about the fact I would not be seen earlier. Luckily I called an optometrist group and was able to get in 2+ weeks later for an evaluation.. They sent me to a surgeon for further assessment and treatment. The issue diagnosed in the spring had created scar tissue on the eye. Now I will be having surgery to remove the scar tissue and as well as a cataract in 2-3 weeks. I am relieved I sought help since I wonder how bad the scarring would have been if I had waited until October 29th. This condition was from just a few months after the inflammation had cleared up. Yesterday I did call back to the Wake Opthalmalogy and spoke with the office manager and was told I should have been more persistent with the receptionist. My goal of my post is to help other patients with real eye issues, not just routine exams, to reach out to their office manager. The gal I had in July was obviously having a bad day or should be in a non-contact role. The best words from her were when I asked about the practice trying to handle the deluge of patients was, "the workers have families". Yes, I hope their doctors read reviews. read more

Normally I wait about ten minutes for my appointment. Dr. Rusinek is very thorough and I get all sorts of tests done to ensure my eyes are healthy. And he leaves time to ask questions and doesn't rush you. They don't use the air puff machine either!! They use some other kind of updated technology. Plus he was super nice and gave me some contacts samples after I mentioned I only wear them for special occasions! Been going here for 4 years and never had a billing issue or a wait issue. Other people complain about the furniture looking old but if you care about having a thorough eye exam and a caring doctor then this practice is spot on. read more

I am really surprised about all the negative remarks made on this site. I have been going to Wake Ophthalmology for many years. Dr. Ward was my doctor and has since retired. I now see Dr Compton and am so pleased with him. He is friendly and takes time to talk. He even sends reports to my primary Dr. to let her know how I am doing. My appts. are pretty much on time once I get there. Many Drs. do have long waits. but not so at this practice. read more

I have had great success with Dr. Rusinek. He performed cataract surgery in both eyes for me. He explained my options, answered questions, and gave me time to think it through. That is important to me, to understand and choose for my own health. I haven't had 20/20 vision for years, and I cannot appreciate the doctor enough for making me have perfect sight again! On a side note, I've noticed some changes in the front desk staffing and they are quicker and more efficient than before. read more

I was referred here by my sister but was extremely disappointed. First they let me drive to an appointment and sit for 1/2 hour downstairs, only to tell me my insurance wouldn't approve the visit until next month. No one bothered to call and reschedule --nor did they mention it in our two phone calls re: insurance information prior to that appointment. Then the day before my new appointment, I get an unprofessional message (one of 6 reminders!!) saying I had better not be late because the doctor has surgery at 10AM and I won't be seen if I'm even a few minutes late. After they wasted my entire morning before, I fail to see the humor in the irony, but still showed up early for a 9AM. I sat in the waiting room till 9:30AM (thought they were on a tight schedule??) when the tech called me back. He did several tests, entered my information, answered a few of my questions and then left. At 10AM, Dr. Rusinek entered (wait, isn't he supposed to be in surgery?). He did many of the same tests, entered information and when finished, said -your prescription will be in the "shop". That's it? We'd had no conversation about my situation, my concerns, what I had tried in the past, -types of glasses or lens or even the outcome of my tests--AKA my eyesight. When I started asking questions, he looked at me like I was asking him to dog sit for me--almost exasperated. He didn't seem interested in understanding my problems or exploring possible solutions--I got the distinct impression that was up to someone in the "shop". And where was this "shop" and what do they do? I'm a new patient for crying out loud! After a few minutes of trying to drag information out of him, I gave up and stumbled my way to the "shop" (where I will say that Evey (sp?) was very nice and tried to help) but THEN I find out my insurance doesn't cover any materials until April (which was a mistake I later fixed)--another FUN fact that would have been nice of them to communicate beforehand--like when I came in and had to reschedule because of insurance!! I have had such a struggle with my vision and am so confused about how to fix it, leaving with nothing after waiting so long and wasting another day, I was SO disappointed I just went to my car and cried. I suppose Dr. Rusinek could have been rushing to get to his surgery, but that shouldn't have affected my time; I waited my turn, I came in on time. In summary, -- inconsiderate scheduling, rude communication and reception, the tech was fine(he gave me more information than the DR- like that I have dry eye and should have gotten an RX) the woman in the shop was helpful and if I had left with ANY kind of resolution or best effort, I would not be writing this review. read more

I love my appointments here at Wake Ophthalmology. Every time I come in I am seen in a quick manner and everyone really takes their time with you. I see Dr. Compton and I can't recommend him enough. He is very knowledgeable and so very personable. Sometimes I forget that I'm in there to get my eyes dilated and checked because he really takes the time to talk to you and with you and is extremely friendly! I also love Liz over at the Optical Shop. Every time I needed help with my prescriptions or to pick out new glasses she's been so extremely helpful. This past time she found a mistake that the front desk made with my insurance and helped me fix it! She was so patient with me and in my eyeglass purchase and was very clear with my insurance policy! I took off one star because as I went back to the front desk to have them reimburse the initial copay, I was talked down to by the receptionist like I didn't know anything. I didn't know my insurance plan had 2 vision plans and wasn't aware that I had to clarify and say the one I was using. She was very passive aggressive. Good luck getting an appointment at this place, or actually seeing a doctor once you arrive. It took me over a week to have a staff member to call me back about booking an appointment for my mothers surgery. We hadn't been given any details about when we should be at the hospital so we called- THEY NEVER ACTUALLY BOOKED THE SURGERY! We were just told about another pre surgery appt needed, booked it, and then rebooked the surgery. They gave us the wrong date for the pre surgical appointment. We had to rush in to accommodate a last moment appointment and while waiting to check in another patient was told her doctor wasn't there, someone should have called her to cancel but didn't. The patient said THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME that happened. Horrible customer service. Get it together folks! read more

I recently was referred to Dr. Stone and Wake Ophthamology for cataracts. I had multiple visits to the Cary office prior to and following the surgery on each eye. In all my interactions with Dr Stone and the staff including the front desk, scheduling, billing, and the technicians I found them all responsive and thorough. I even used the Optical shop to adjust my glasses during the multiple week process and they happily did so at no cost. I had very little to no wait for any of my appointments. I now have 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/30 in the other and do not need glasses for distance after having them most of my life. Thank you Dr. Stone and staff. read more

I visited the office on August 11th for an eye injury from LabCorp. On contact with the front desk receptionist Marla, she was far from personabl. She was dry and appeared to be bothered by my presence. She called me up to obtain my payment. I used my HealthEquity card that has a significant balance. The card wouldn't go through. I called and verified the amount. Finally I spoke with a rep who said vision couldn't be used because it's not medical. I found that interesting because this was NOT an Optometrist office but a Ophthalmologist office. Anyway, the receptionist said I might need to reschedule and she would see if they could still see me. She came back and said I would need to reschedule with the time that passed. I informed her of the severity of my symptom. In a nonchalant manner she said it would be a couple of weeks before I could be seen. She also put my cards down on the counter in a way that you could hear a snap as opposed to hand them to me. I wasn't interested in getting down to her level so I calmly asked to speak with the manager. The manager reschedule me for today. A few days out. When I got to the office today, I was informed that the doctors had decided that they would not provide medical servic. This office is discriminatory and has outdated mindsets and values. I don't not recommend it. The individuals I was suppose to see were Michael Compton and Robert Stone. read more

in the last week Called on 9/14/17 at 12:46 and made appointment for 9/26/17 @9:15. The receptionist took all my insurance information and confirmed my appointment. I showed up on 9/15 only to find out they had no record of my appointment...I even showed them in my call log where I called and made the appointment (apparently the receptionist didn't schedule it). Recently had cataract surgery. His bedside manor was fantastic and put me at ease during the procedure. Wish more physicians would take the time Dr.Compton takes with his patients. I highly recommend Dr. Rusinek to anyone looking for help with cataract surgery. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and he puts you at ease the moment you meet him. Dr. Rusinek took his time to explain my condition as well as my treatment options. Regarding my choice of lenses, I asked him " If you were me, what would you do?" and he gave me the best answer, for me. I was very nervous about the surgery and he said to me " I promise I will take good care of you". He was very sincere and it put me at ease. I came through both surgeries with no problems and very well taken care of. He also spend as much time as needed with you to get all of you questions answered at every appointment and tells you what to expect as healing progresses. This practice is awful. I went here for years to see Dr. Ward, who was great. At that time the front office staff was rude and disorganized. Since Dr.Ward has left, everything has gone downhill with the front office staff. They should all be replaced, and the office manager, if they even have one, should be first to go. Also, the optical shop staff are the worst. They're crooks. They try to hold your prescription captive. I don't want to pay 3x the price for my contacts, so I'm not buying them from your optical shop. I just want you to print my prescription so I can leave. And you give me the runaround to try to force me to buy contacts through your optical shop for a ridiculous markup. Will never go here again. read more

Awful experience! I went to obtain a second opinion. The reception staff was aloof at best. There was no smiling or kind chat. Dr. Stone is aptly named as his expression didn't change throughout the appointment. He got up to take a call from another doctor and never came back. Since my appointment was pretty much over I left. During the appointment he had put bright orange drops in both eyes. When I went to the receptionist desk to check out none of the staff (there were 3 at the time) nor Dr. Stone (he found me in the lobby to let me know he was going to come back) let me know that I had all of this orange dye around both of my eyes. It was only hours later, after I had to go to my sons' school, that someone told me I looked like a zombie! I would never recommend anyone go there ever!! read more

I feel that no one should come to this practice given the ophthalmologist I saw was not adequately trained while simultaneously overly confident in his irrelevant and misleading viewpoint. Any ophthalmologist should be able to identify a straightforward eye injury, and the point of a clinic with multiple physicians is that they should be able to refer to one another if there is any condition with which they are lacking experience. After an injury, I had by chance encountered someone from Carolina Retina who advised me with any eye injury it is critical to have the eyes dilated and examined by an opthalmologist; that person said any opthalmologist can perform this exam. I feel sure they meant, any competent ophthalmologist - and I will not include Dr. Compton. I will say to his credit only that Dr. Compton did identify Cranial Nerve IV injury and even wrote on my record a cryptic "CN-IV palsy," but he never took a moment to explain to me what that abbreviation means, what is the function of CN-IV, and he clearly did not know how to address the injury. If he did not remember his college courses on the topic, and if his colleagues could be of no help, well then there is youtube and he could have watched the superhero episode where my case is the guy in the blue suit (LOL) who comes in around minute 20 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKrCh6BnTR4). What is inexcusable is that Dr. Compton went off on tangents that completely set me off the course of recovery, arguing about philosophies of how concussions heal. What he needed to do was to prescribe prism lenses so that I could see and regain some level function visually. Instead, he asked me to come back again in a month to repeat dilating my eyes, to see if there were changes to the injury that might suggest prism lenses would become obsolete. First, CN-IV palsy is diagnosed without dilation. One dilation I have learned is adequate for examining an injury. Second, prisms are essential and you do not wait a month to allow a person to be able to see. I needed my eyes in order to review medical records and pay bills, for instance, not to mention to seek adequate care. There is already a wait for a prescription to be filled which is long enough. Third, I should have been referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist who has higher training than an ophthalmologist, along with an explanation of what the eye injury entailed and why I needed neuro specialty. Since I had been confused by Dr. Compton's proclamations as to how concussions heal (which was irrelevant to how the CN-IV palsy should be addressed), I dropped a written note to the office asking my question about the vision changes I note with head movements. The note was lost by the front desk, so I did not receive a response. When I finally got through to someone after great length, Dr. Compton called me directly but he was unable to answer questions for which the answers lie in the superhero youtube video available to anyone ... and he admitted he did not actually know about concussions. Yes, concussions, the topic about which he was arguing philosophy, as to whether prism lenses can "heal" a concussion or in fact do they heal on their own with time? That is when I was able to deduce I needed to be referred on. I have an end note about this practice. When I first arrived I was given some kind of vision test on a machine which I suppose takes a distance vision measurement. I was then put in a dark room with a young tech named Olivia. The room was scarcely lit at all, and she sat in the corner repeating my name in a creepy drawl "... whhhyyyy did yoouuuuu commmme heeeere?" I suppose she meant I had 20/25 distance vision and decided I did not need to see any ophthalmologist? I tried to simply answer that I was advised to see an opthalmologist because of an injury to my eye. Yet she continued the same question, ignoring my response. This was a very psycho beginning that nearly caused me to get up and leave until a nicer tech entered, and then Dr. Compton arrived with all of his trumped up confidence, drawing attention away from the matter at hand, toward variations in schools of thought which had no bearing. Had I been forewarned to steer clear of these practitioners, my path to recovery would have been somewhat more clear, like a prism lens. read more

Not impressed. I am still in their office as I write this review. The assistant is terrible. She makes me flinch. The facility is old and the chair looks like it's ripping. They need to upgrade their furniture and equipment in my opinion. Seeing how I have perfect vision, I will not be seeing an ophthalmologist anytime soon, but when I do, I will not go to this practice. They also don't come on time for your appointment. read more

I had an excellent experience when my general dr referred me here. I had what could have been a very serious condition. I saw Dr. Rusinek multiple times a day for a couple days, then daily, and so on. The gravity of the situation was clearly expressed to me and I felt thoroughly taken care of. I was having to use various eye drops at different stages and was given samples when it was short term usage. I have no complaints and very grateful for the care I received. read more

This has been my ophthalmology office for the past 15 years. Great service and always with a smile. Dr Stone may be a little quiet but he will get your eyes right. You do need an appointment which can be hard to get. The glasses shop, has something for most. If you want ultra high end, you won't find it here. But otherwise, should do fine. read more

I have enjoyed this place, the front desk staff is nice. I have ran into some sad issues that have made me find another eye doctor and steer away from this place. Multiple times my prescription was wrong and way too strong, causing me dizzy spells and nausea after taking off my glasses after only wearing them for 30 minutes. I was very disappointed they could not get it right. I also suffer from bad light exposure pain to both my eyes since I was a little girl, causing me to not see, be in tremendous amounts of pain, dizzy, causing me even have to pull over on the side of the road even while wearing good sunglasses because they hurt so bad I couldn't see. I ended up calling having a solution for driving by getting a waiver to allow me to have my windows darker so i'm protected while driving and do not wreck (it is considered a problem when you have bad pain to light exposure and you can get a waiver because of it I read up on it) and the woman working at the time told me I can go print out the waiver, sign it and bring it back for them to sign it then i'd be set. I was thinking finally a solution for driving! I drop it off and a couple hours later another woman ( I cannot remember her name) called me and said "Oh.. i'm sorry.. light exposure issues and pain isn't a "actual issue" and also not a "medical problem" so you can't get this waiver signed by us or anyone, oh well.. it's not a real problem. That's how it is" in a rude manor. I felt so disrespected, disappointed, i felt treated like garbage and disregarded! Me and my mom have both decided not to come back here anymore. I have been going to Wake Opthalmology for more than 15 years. I have received excellent care and they are very responsive to requests to see a doctor on short notice for sudden changes in vision or other eye problems requiring immediate attention. They are also very good at explaining medical problems and treatments in laymen's terms so that I can make informed decisions. I only visited this office once but my experience there warranted a review. I called for an appointment after experiencing some scary flashers in my vision, when I called I was told they would happy to see me however they were at capacity, after a bit of whining from me the lady who answered asked me to hold, when she came back she told me she spoke with the doctor and to come right in. They were honest with me about having to wait since i was a work in but my wait was only about 30minutes. The lobby looks like any other medical office. What really made my day were the ladies at the front of the office. They were smiling and laughing when I came in and knocked over the plexiglass twice and assured me it happens a few times a day. Dr Compton was amazing and the young man who prepared me for the doctor was very prompt and thourough asking me all the pertinent questions. If I lived in state I would surely make this my regular eye doctor!!! read more

My 91 year old father, a WWII veteran in the Pacific theater, was treated poorly by Dr. Compton on Friday, February 10. Dr. Compton was shuffling waiting patients around in an overcrowded waiting area, and had very little time for Dad. My father was "scolded" for not washing his eyelids properly with baby shampoo, and basically dismissed after not being able to use a previously-prescribed ointment because it blurred his vision. Compton failed to fax an eye drop perscription to my father's assisted living facility, thus making Dad suffer unnecessarily over the weekend. He wouldn't look at me or hand me the prescription (which he hadn't written until today), when I went back to the office to retrieve it personally. We'll find another opthamologist. read more
