I had an excellent eye exam from Dr. David MacDonald. He was very thorough, knowledgeable and kind. I would recommend him to anyone. My only reason for not giving a full 5/5 review is that the tech who helped me before Dr. MacDonald came in smelled very strongly of cigarettes and tried to cover it up with perfume. It was overwhelming. read more

WARNING: If you do not buy glasses from them they will not release a full prescription.

Saw Dr. David Macdonald, him and his entire staff are very professional and super kind. Dr. Macdonald was extremely knowledgeable and knew all the answers to questions I had. Also had some really great deals on frames. Good people all around. read more

I saw Dr. Bass, who did not prescribe a workable set of contacts for me. I found this out a month and $400+ later when they arrived. All efforts for resolution were on my side, and when I tried to go back again to get it fixed, was told I would incur all fees again and could not return the bad contacts. Front desk staff were friendly and responsive, but this isn't a business you can work with. read more

Dr. Canting is excellent but he sold the business and retired in 2023. I liked him and would have gone back to see him. Not sure who replace him after he sold his business. read more

I was a patient of Uwe's for almost 20 years. I respect his skill and continued going to him even after I moved out of Cary 8 years ago. It became a 30-minute drive but it seemed worth it. His practice was great before he retired but now it's part of a chain. It's not the same. This week I had an out of the ordinary symptom (a visual aura) that was likely either just a minor nuisance or else something quite serious, but regardless one that required an eye doctor's evaluation as soon as possible. When I called to make an appointment on Tuesday, the scheduler told me they had "nothing today, or even this week really" and "actually, we're booked up through September." Wow. Are you saying [TVO] isn't equipped to deal with situations like this anymore? "No sir. I can't get you in. I can refer you to another office though. Or I can make an appointment for you after September?" When Uwe was still there, my wife once had a terrible irritation in one eye and *his* office got her in right away, finding a piece of glass in her eye and correcting the problem. It didn't take 5 weeks. Now the best the current team can do is offer a referral? The messaging, or takeaway, for me is that the current management is unwilling or no longer capable of handling situations like this, or possibly worse yet, this branch is no longer staffed with eye doctors that can deal with unusual eye ailments (okay, that seems unlikely so I'll stick with this being a management failure). If all you need are routine eye exams and overpriced glasses then this might be the place for you. TVO, if this is your business model, it sucks. I expect more for my family. After I hung up I called an established (and non-chain) optometrist down the street from my house. They found time to see me within the hour and diagnosed the issue quickly. I'll be using them from now on. read more

I love the eye doctor, John Desmone. But every time I try to call, it goes to the central answering service. Never have they connected me with the Havelock office. They always have an excuse of some sort. So why should I go somewhere where I can't call them myself? It is a very poor arrangement and I plan on going to a different place because of the answering service. read more

Due to covid, I put this visit off for awhile especially since the doctor I used frequent closed up shop. However, I found this place and decided to give it a try. Dr. Canting is great. Engaging and provided lots of information. Most importantly, he was honest and told me that my eyes didn't really change and that new glasses were not necessary. The staff were all friendly as well. Sidenote, the eye exam does not include PD. That's an extra $25 charge. The only issue I had was with the place is the lady who takes you back and handles the first part of the eye exam (getting pictures of the eye, puff machine, etc...) was only wearing a face shield. With her being so close and having to give a lot of verbal direction for the 4 different machines, I would have preferred her be masked. read more

Dr.Canting of Canting Optometry& His staff have consistently provided excellent customer service and patient care....Dr. Canting is always upbeat, caring and shows a keen and knowledgeable interest in your optical health and in how your doing over all. Big mistake going to this place. This business recommended progressive glasses for me which they were eager to charge for from my insurance & copays from me. But since discovering these new glasses were causing double vision while driving at night I contacted the office about it. They insist on another exam for a fee of $64, of course, which I refused. I already had the annual eye exam with them for which they recommended these glasses that are causing double vision. I don't have any vision problems with my old glasses. This place did not fix the problem, will not give any refunds for my copay nor accept any responsibility! The office manager said they will not do any refunds. So I am out of money on glasses I paid for that don't work. Except for the 2 people that sit at the front desk who are always nice, rest of this office are just greedy & rude! Taking my business elsewhere. read more

Another awesome visit. It seems that the practice is growing and more patients are discovering how this eye doctor, Dr. Canting, provides easygoing, friendly, thorough care. So, I was told that on Fridays, at least Fridays, they have someone else in to help out. Today's visit was them squeezing me in for a troublemaker eye problem. Dr. Canting was very thorough in his assessment, kind, and attentive. I especially appreciate how the staff is so on it with everything they do. Highly recommend this office. Tip: Check in on the Yelp app for $100 off a complete pair of eyeglasses. Fine print: Complete pair includes frame and lenses with a minimum retail price of $275. May not be combined with insurance or any other discounts. read more

Dr. Canting seems very competent, but look at the paperwork you have to sign when you go in. He obviously has one primary objective, to maximize his profit. When you look at what you have to sign before your appointment, you will see he wants to charge each patient as much as possible. read more

Friendly, knowledgeable staff! Didn't have to wait long and everything was explained. Thanks for a good experience.

Pretty upset with my experience at this practice. I believed I had a contact stuck in my eye and I called to ask what I should do to get it out. The woman on the phone told me that if I came in he would take a look at it for me. I explained I did not have any insurance and she insisted that he would do it for me. I was not expecting to be charged, and didn't even think I would be taken back into a room. I was then charged $120 to find out it wasn't even in my eye still. I feel incredibly taken advantage of. No I was not expecting free services. But I literally thought he was going to come in the lobby and look at my eye and say it's in there or not. Otherwise I would have waited it out and called in if I had issues the next day. When I called I was not expecting to make an appointment to be seen, I was honestly just asking what I should do to my eye if it were still in there and she gave me no advice other than to come in. I then emailed the office manager and she acted like I was an idiot for thinking I was going to get a service for free. But I didn't want a service to begin with! So upset with this practice. read more

Dr.Canting is the best eye doctor I've ever had (and I've been going to numerous drs for 15 yrs). Office is nice, new, and professional. Dr Canting is extremely personable, quick, and easy to get along w. Happy to have a doctor that I enjoy and appreciate! read more

I've been visiting Dr. Canting for years, and I have had many good experiences at his practice. The new building they moved into off of Maynard is very nice, and the staff are always friendly and very accommodating. The wait times are usually not very long with scheduled appointments, and they're very good with helping you pick out new frames or readjusting old ones. Dr. Canting is also very friendly and very easy to talk to. He does very thorough job with the routine eye exams and keeps me very informed on the status of my vision. I would highly recommend trying out Canting Optometry if you're in need of an optometrist. read more

I've been going here for a few years now, and it was my first experience going to an Optometrist. Doctor Cantor was NOT what I expected in an eye doctor, I expected a quiet, timid little man but I don't think any of those words describe him at all! In any case, he's great, very knowledgeable, professional, and easy to talk to. Great visits and he gets my vision correction prescription right the first time. In regards to the shop, as you can see from the pictures it is clean and warm and comfortable. As far as the Staff, they are SO nice and always double check my phone number... on EVERY visit. I like that... after moving away from Cary to Garner, I tried a new Optometrist and it was a terrible experience, most of which stemmed from the girl who wrote down my phone number made the 7 look like a 1, so I never got ANY phone calls when my glasses were done, which, long story short, resulted in a disastrous experience with them that lasted about 6 months. (oh they left messages... on someone else's machine??) Needless to say I drive from Garner to Cary now for my visits, and I just can't say enough good things about this place and the great and reasonably priced glasses I get there. read more

I really needed an eye exam, but never got one thanks to their poorly trained office staff. Called to ask for an appointment, immediately asked if I had insurance. I said yes. Then I was put on hold. Another person took over (mid-call? who does that?) to take down my insurance details because the first person decided to take a lunch break. I provided insurance details and scheduled the appt. Got there early the day of appt (frustrated by where to park for their oddball corner location). Provided the same info again, plus 3 more sheets of personal info. Waited and waited. Watched other people go into doc's office ahead of me. The front desk person kept paging a very important person who never answered the plea for help. They were whispering at the front desk and laughing about someone's poor handwriting (mine). After an hour they admitted they couldn't verify my insurance and they wanted me to wait for the VIP to come back from lunch. Meanwhile, the doc was wandering around. Didn't make eye contact or acknowledge my existence. I told them I couldn't wait around any longer. A complete waste of more than an hour of my time because they didn't do their work ahead of time, didn't adequately train their staff, didn't respond to pages, didn't know what how to solve a problem, and didn't communicate. Other people walked in and were greeted over-the-top warmly while I was being ignored. Most office visits are straightforward and pleasant, but this one soured me from coming back. read more

Great staff. I did not see the doctor but need a new pair of glasses. The staff are very patient and helpful. My nose is kind of flat compared to other people. They spent extra time and effort to accommodate me. They really treat their customer well. read more

Wow, what a great place! Had an eye issue that needed to be checked out and was able to get an appointment same day. Dr Canting went above and beyond to make sure I was ok by seeing me out of office hours. This is now my go to place for eye care. read more

Preface: glasses wearer for 30 years since i was a kid with a prescription that is no joke and i can barely make my wY through the house without them. I had the same OD for the last 6 years... good overall, but i had a few incidents of eye pain in the past few months and when i called to try to get an asap appt...i was told they were booked up due to the holidays and i could come in but there was no gaurantee theyd get to me. That was it... done. I had noticed the mysterious building across from Lowes for months and did my research... decided based also Yelp reviews to make an appt. Dr. Canting is hands down the most thorough eye doctor i have ever had the privilege to work with. He took his time, addressed all of my questions and stepped well beyond what was required to make sure not just that i was satisfied but that he was as well with my eye health. In the past i have always felt my eye doctor was just waiting to trap me in their eye ware room and basically hold me hostage until i gave in. I will admit i had been a sucker to take my prescription and go straight to the big box mall based 1 hour or less lensmakers store in the past. At Dr. Cantings office he dialated my pupils and had me wait in the waiting room. When he had arrived at my prescription which did not change from my current at the time frames... he told me basically " i dont want you getting new frames and lenses and coming back in a month wondering why there was no change in your vision... they will be the same". As i waited for the fun dialation to set in... i wandered over to the frames section. One of their staff (Dana maybe?) simply gave me the layout... no pressure whatsoever. I just happened to find a perfect set of frames which i did not expect as i am famously picky to a fault. They hooked me up on the spot... took the measurements and they were ordered. I was surprised at the price and have easily paid more at the big box store. I finished up with Dr. Canting who was reassuring and told me point blank if i had any recurrence of eye issues to show up the very minute it was going on and he'd see me on the spot. Impressed. Got the call my frames were in... long story short, the hinge was defective and instead of simply settling for a fix... they reordered the frame again. More has transpired since and I wont bore you other than to reassure you that a better quality in Doctor and customer service you will not find. The old doctor is forgotten... the 'lensmakers' experience is past and they to me now are the walmart of frame shops. If you rely on your glasses and respect your sight... you owe it to yourself to have the frame and lens maker take more than an hour to make them. Save the hour or less gaurantee for pizzas... your eyes are complex they deserve care. I have personally recommended Dr. Canting to friends and my wife and hope you will give them a chance. Awesome experience from someone like me who is hard to impress. read more

This guy is by far the best eye doctor Ive been to and the office staff is also very kind. Canting really knows his stuff. He has explained scintillating scotoma (aura associated with migraines) and helped me with allergy /light sensitivity issues as well. He is able to balance a professional attitude with a friendly attitude, all the while without seeming over the top or insincere. read more

Dr. Canting and the staff are nice, I have visited twice and had a pleasant experience both times. My only concern is with the billing; make certain you know exactly what your charges are before the visit. Since I've only had contacts for a year and this was my first visit back I was unaware that there was an extra surcharge for renewing your prescription in addition to the eye exam. I was under the impression I would only have to pay for an office visit. This might be standard practice everywhere but I would have appreciated having this knowledge before being charged. read more

Two years ago, I might have agreed with the two other reviews of this practice, however it seems that times have changed them. Let me first agree that Dr. Canting is a wonderful Dr. and one of the best I have ever been to, however, dealing with his office staff has become intolerable. I was told that if I could not provide them with my insurance information one day prior to the appointment, that I would be put on "cash only" basis. I said I would bring the information with me to the appointment, however they said that would not work as they would not have time to look it up and verify the coverage prior to seeing Dr. Canting.... and by the way, I have been going to Dr. Canting for a number of years and we changed insurance since last year... it's not like I am a first time customer. Wow... they must think that everyone is out to find a way to not pay! Too bad... I really like Dr. Canting, but can not deal with his office staff any more... it is insulting!!! read more
