Great groomers and they do a very good job. They listen and try to do what is asked. The variability in experience and outcome is a evident and perhaps some training of new people is wise? Occasionally forget to trim nails. I would give 5 stars because I really like the groomers, but the only thing that drives me crazy is the trainer in the lobby. While I realize she is trying to run a business, it's terrible to arrive for check in for grooming and being told "don't do this. Stand away from this dog. etc. etc." I want to be understanding, but the last visit it got downright rude. Perhaps there is not enough space? Maybe there is a more conducive location? Not sure, but I do know that our pups are scared enough to come to the groomer and when we arrive we are trying to keep them calm with calm voices because they can sense everything. read more

After nearly three years of using Wags on Willow, we've decided to move to a new groomer (whom I will review separately). In September, I took my 13 year old dog (10 lbs) in for her regular grooming. There had been some previous issues with Wags, but they could all be chalked up to honest mistakes. You'd show up for an appointment and it wouldn't be on the books despite having a text confirmation; I'd get my dog back and find that her nails had only been trimmed on 3 paws, etc. And they did seem like they'd been experiencing a lot of turnover recently. But this time there were too many mistakes to forgive. After dropping my dog off, and hearing nothing for 3 hours, I called to see what the status was. She's a senior dog who can't stand for long periods, so I was beginning to worry. After some shuffling, the person on the phone said they needed about 45 more minutes. I had the feeling they hadn't even started my dog's groom. When I arrived to pick up my dog, I barely recognized her. She was shaved so close that I could see her skin. And, strangely, her tail and ears had also been shaved. (She's a Havanese, and though I don't groom her like a show dog, she has always had a tail and ears!) Her shave job was patchy and uneven, and there were random long hairs poking out all over. Her tail looked like it had been chewed on. It was the worst haircut she'd had in 13 years, and she looked like a rat. My neighbor saw me walking her, and asked if she'd been in an accident. I reached out to Wags to express my displeasure, and sent them some pictures. They told me it took longer than expected because she was matted, and because she's getting older "she thrashes her head and barely lets us touch her legs." I wasn't there, so I can't dispute this, but it doesn't sound like my dog. Groomers have always told me she's easy. Four hours still seemed extreme for a 10 lb dog who got shaved. To Wags' credit, they did acknowledge they should have called before they deviated so drastically from her usual cut. They also offered to let me bring my pup back to try and fix it. But frankly, I wasn't comfortable taking her back. She had already been through a lot. About a week later, we noticed Bella licking her forearms, and that's when we noticed her dew claws had not been trimmed. They were beginning to poke into her legs. We took her to our vet, who told us they clearly hadn't been trimmed for a long time--likely a few grooms. They also trimmed a few other nails that had been missed or done poorly. Today I took her to a new groomer (Rover's Place). They had her done in 45 minutes, and she looks fantastic. She's fluffy, and adorable, and she frolicked out of there feeling great. They rounded her ears back to a normal ear shape, and helped us come up with a plan to help Bella continue to grow out in a few spots, and to return to her former self. They also told me she was great on the table, and they didn't notice any thrashing or pulling. They said she was well behaved and "easy." So, alas, we're saying goodbye to Wags. read more

Years ago we had a problem with the groomers. It occurred after they moved to their new location in Northfield. A new groomer was hired. She seemed to groom the dogs well but her personality was moody. She could be very moody. Once, she kept me waiting for at least 10 minutes while she chatted up a friend of hers though she had seen me arrive to pick up my dog. My dog was barking and crying because he had heard my voice. Still, the groomer ignored me. I finally walked over to the area where the grooming was done. A groomer came out and gave me my dog. Could the groomer who was chit chatting have asked her friend to wait, gotten my dog, and then resumed her conversation or have called another groomer to have helped me? Quess not. Other things had happened there before. That deliberate rudeness and inappropriate behavior and unprofessionalism was the last straw. We have never used them again. No more problems. I give them 2 stars, as we had both good and bad experiences here. The first two grooming went fine and were on-time. Today, our dog was there 3.5 hours and never was groomed. I tried to call the store to check on her, and no one answered the phone. However, the front cashier was sitting there doing nothing when I arrived. I refused to leave her there for another 'hour or so' and took her home. A dog should not have to be in a shop for 5 hours to be groomed. Upon getting home, our dog drank a full BIG bowl of water, so she was not attended to for many hours. I heard from others that staffing changes have impacted the group and I think they are living off of their old reputation. $90 for a bath is expensive and really turned me off. The front cashier could certainly benefit from some customer training. read more

Overrated and overpriced. This was my first time at this particular groomer as my regular groomer had no availability for weeks. My puppy is super super friendly but gets very nervous during baths. He's under 12 pounds so it's not difficult bathing him. I don't think Wags did a great job bathing him or maybe did not even bathe him because he smelled dirty the next day. We had to bathe again soon after. Generally he smells clean for days after getting groomed. I really should have known better when they called to pick him up so soon, they were so busy that morning!! In addition his cut was uneven around his face. I suspect they were in a rush and the groomer was not gentle or patient because they were so busy. There are too many other groomers in the area for lackluster service. I would pass on Wags. read more

I truly wish I could have loved this place. I took my labradoodle Khloé in on Saturday to get a full groom for the first time with Alli. We picked her up and she had her paw pad cut pretty badly and was bleeding quite a lot. I called to see if I could get some clarity around what happened and was told that there was no way she could have been cut while grooming (if she was cut during grooming I would completely understand because accidents do happen). Maybe the cut went by unnoticed which would be okay too however I didn't like the next comments even more when I asked what else could have happened. Alli mentioned that Khloé was nervous in the crate and she could have cut herself in there. Khloé is crate trained and also what in the world could be in the crate that she cuts herself on even if she is nervous? I had to get Khloe's vet involved because her paw pad bled for 4 days and she was in pain. It is now Thursday and just today her paw pad stopped bleeding. Nonetheless, not one call from Wags on Willow to ask how Khloé is doing. Pretty disappointing. Also, she came out of grooming with dirtier ears and teeth than she went in with. The actual hair cut was very pretty though. You'll notice I don't like to leave bad reviews (this is my first) but situations like these should be handled with a lot more attention in my opinion. Khloé means the absolute world to me and I try my hardest to ensure I provide her with the best care and that does include care with the groomers as well and this situation was very unfortunate. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! ANIMAL ABUSE!!! Staff is very rude and not accommodating whatsoever particularly when they don't greet you on your arrival or smile. We took our dog there on 3 separate occasions (we tried giving them multiple chances) and each visit our experience became worse and worse. For starters their price is inflated by about an extra $30-$40 than normal pet grooming locations. The first time we took our dog there we were promised our dog to be ready in about 2-3 hours. After 5 HOURS we called to check up on our dog just to find out he was next in line!! So for 5 hours he was locked in a crate without any attention before they even STARTED grooming our dog. They seem to have favorites when every patron should be treated the same. The next time we went was in the middle of winter and when we picked up our dog he was soaking wet and shivering on our arrival. In the dead of winter?! SERIOUSLY?!?! That is how dogs can catch pneumonia and die. They obviously do not care about animals or their safety whatsoever. So please do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY, unless you want to pay a fortune to have your animal abused and neglected for hours on end. read more

So I have never written a bad review but I must share my story. My Bernese Mountain dog has been groomed every month for six years. My groomer retired and I picked Wags on Willow. When I picked him up I saw he had all his hair cut on his behind and his beautiful tail also had about 4 inches off. I did ask for the hair on his backside trimmed not shaved and his beautiful feathering on his tail removed! I was in a state of shock. When we got home at least 8 of his nails were bleeding. Again his nails were short to begin with and didn't need to be hacked. When I called I was told he had a large quick and this was normal . Again he has been groomed every month for 6 years and this never happened. I have had dogs for 30 years and I was treated as if this was my first experience. read more

This place is amazing! My baby, Bailey, was in dire need of a haircut. Unfortunately, our regular groomer is on maternity leave and she is also very far away. So upon doing some research for a new grooming place that is in close proximity to us and has amazing reviews, we found wags on willow. I called to make a first time grooming appointment and spoke to one of the owners, Mary. She was extremely sweet and accommodating. She answered all my questions and was able to book us a first time grooming appointment with Maggie. Maggie...is....fantastic!! She groomed Bailey just the way I like it, she and I talked about how I wanted Bailey to be cut and Bailey came out of his appointment looking like a superstar! No wonder this place has gotten so many awards over the past couple of years, from the customer service to the grooming service....wags on willow are at the top of their game. It feels great to have found top notch dog grooming in a charming pet boutique. Our mini goldendoodle mop, Kirby, met Joanna and after a quick consultation about my wishes, Joanna worked her magic. Two hours later, Kirby was immaculately groomed (adorable), she had no clipper burn, and her coat was fresh and clean--no dryer sheet wall of scent. Reports were, Kirby behaved well. My dog almost never visits the groomer--she has fur that doesn't need to be cut, and it's easy to bathe her at home. But on my flight to Chicago, she had a little...ahem...personal issue...that required immediate care, that rhymes with "glogged canal frands." (She doesn't really like me discussing her personal business on Yelp...) Tony, the groomer, used to work for a vet, so he was able to clear her little full glands the way the vets do (from the inside), not the way that most groomers do (from the outside). It was $20 and they got us right in--the whole thing took about 10 minutes. She now smells fresh as a daisy... Well...as fresh as this little daisy ever really smells... To be honest, I didn't like the service my pet received. We wanted a minimal cut. He was shaved with spots so close they were almost bleeding. Granted, he probably had areas with matts, but his usual groomer (PetSmart) gets those out or trims them. His nails were cut so short that one actually bled when he got home. I'm not sure what happened there, but my very active and happy dog has been very subdued and lethargic since he has been there. read more

I was in the Northbrook area and I was trying to find a good place to buy my dog a birthday gift. I didn't want to go to the regular petsmart or petco. I wanted something different. I read a few reviews and this one was the best. I wanted to see for myself if it was worth going. The store was clean and organized. It smelled good. Not like if you were to walk into petco and smell pee everywhere. Everything was pretty easy to find as well. They have some pretty unique dog toys as well. I got there and a lady named Mary helped me. She greeted me with a warm welcome and asked what I needed help with. She showed me exactly what I was looking for. She even went to the back of the store to bring out a musical birthday cake toy. I'm glad she took the time to help me. Overall, I was very satisfied with my short experience there. Sometimes, I wish I lived in the 'burbs. I stumbled in recently and found my favorite grain free pet food, in the hard-to-find larger size bags. Not only were they helpful and courteous, they got me signed up for their frequent buyer program right away (if you're a pet owner, you know that $250 is not hard to spend on quality pet food!). They held onto my 20# bag while I shopped around, then offered to *carry it to my car* if I just honked from the curb. Seriously? I didn't honk - I couldn't get myself to do it - but they still insisted on carrying it for me. After dealing with stores that won't return calls, don't carry what I want, and have to special order it every time, I'll be back. It's a trek for me, but I think I'll be making most of my future purchases here! read more

First time coming back to Wags since my 4 year old Labradoodle was a puppy. I was apprehensive as we have had many bad grooms in the past other places. I always say that I would like the overall hair left AS LONG AS POSSIBLE while removing matts. I got my dog back with barely ANY hair, his tail was half shaved, half left long and his face barely touched. In the end he looks like 2 different dogs, neither of which is what I would want - nor communicated.
