One small note: the plastic logo cups served with the water decanter felt a little out of place. They were a bit sharp on the lips and didn't quite match the rest of the dining experience. Minor detail, but noticeable. The drinks, however, were excellent. On our server's recommendation, my husband ordered the Gingerbread Old Fashioned and I had the Salted Caramel Martini. Both were seasonal specials and both were fantastic. When we asked about the scotch eggs, our server explained they're normally a brunch-only item. We were a little disappointed (and may have made a few pouty faces while explaining we'd come specifically for them for his birthday), but we quickly let it go, it obviously wasn't her fault. What we didn't realize was that she went back and told the kitchen manager that it was his birthday and that we'd made the trip just for those scotch eggs. Since the kitchen wasn't slammed, they decided to make them anyway and surprised us with an order. We were honestly floored. My husband was thrilled. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. And the scotch eggs were exactly what he'd been hoping for! They were crispy on the outside with a rich, savory center. For entrées, his Nashville Hot Chicken was juicy with the perfect amount of heat without being overwhelming. My Haystack Burger was stacked and delicious, though the BBQ sauce was strong enough to overshadow the pickled green tomato a bit. The fries were fantastic - crispy, battered, and perfect from first bite to last. Our server checked in at all the right times and kept drinks refilled without us needing to ask. The fact that she went out of her way to do something special during one of the busiest weeks on a restaurant's calendar says a lot about both her and the restaurant. Rustic Spoon is the kind of place that works just as well for a casual date night as it does for a birthday dinner or a night out with friends.

What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. Today after visiting my favorite ice cream spot I decided on an early dinner and set my GPS for the restaurant's address. To my surprise it was extremely visible, sitting right at the entrance to Kemps River Crossing Shopping Center. Turn into the entrance from Kempsville Road and you'll see it sitting directly on the right. It was early. So we were able to immediately get a comfortable table and extremely prompt service. Our server remembered all my special needs. She answered my fiend's questions about her preferred wine choice. Our drinks were served very quickly. The menu was extremely interesting. There were different sections for differing tastes. The Lunch/Dinner Menu has sections for Sandwiches, Soups & Salads, Small Plates, Signature Burgers, Tavern Pizza & European Comfort Foods. The latter was where my interest lay. It was a really hard choice since I could easily have ordered many of the dishes on the menu. How could I choose between the British, German & Irish entrees? After much agonizing I finally chose German. My Jägerschnitzel, a German classic, consisted of hand-flattened pork loin fried and topped with traditional onion and mushroom gravy. The only thing missing at Park Lane was their roaring fire. But Park Lane has the better menu choices. There are distinctively different sections. We were in a section that consisted of regular tables and chairs, which is ideal for those of us with bad backs and titanium knees. :). But there were no televisions in the area. There were sections of high top tables, booths and large inviting looking bars. Televisions showing sports were visible in most sections. I'd like to try one of the different sections closer to the bar rather than to be immediately taken to the more comfortable section, obviously their section in which to seat people my age.:) After dinner I did a little research on the tavern. The establishment was designed to feature the elements of a European Tavern or Pub. It has succeeded well in replicating that feel. It offers the best of both American and European cuisine. The group, which also has Taverns in Hampton & Fredericksburg, features unique beverage offering with an extensive selection of draughts from around the world. In my opinion they have completely succeeded in their goal of providing atmosphere, design, cuisine and comfort. I can't wait to return and try the Corned Beef & Cabbage.

I ordered the Torpedo--which is essentially an Italian sub, The Chief--which is a burger, and vanilla milkshake. Not one item is anything I would ever order again. The Chief Burger - the patty was a hefty piece of meat, right on the verge of too thick. I could taste some light seasoning on the patty which I appreciated, but it could have been doubled. The patty was overcooked and dry, and the sandwich overall was very dry. Mine was missing any lubricating condiments. This burger was in desperate need of some mayonnaise or ketchup or more cheese or something to give it juiciness as a person who really loves smashburgers, this patty was really too thick and it was packed to tightly... It made it feel like it was heavy and sitting in your stomach, like a rock versus being a lighter more airy and tender type of patty. The top bun was sesame seeded, but dried out like it had been exposed to a heat lamp for too long (the bottom bun was fine). The Torpedo - this is an essentially an Italian with only two meats... Just ham and salami. It had all the right fixings for an Italian sub, and it matched the menu description; however, it just did not come together very well in my opinion. First of all the bread was thick and hard-ish (especially the top bread), making it hard to chew. I removed the top breads, and put the two bottoms together to make this easier to eat and cut out a few carbs at the same time. Lastly the Vanilla Milkshake - I had such high hopes for this based on reviews I had seen about it being a "real" milkshake, not from a mix, the time it took to make one etc. and alas, this too was a disappointment. Milkshake has hardly any vanilla flavor, and it was 75% foam -the effect you get when you overblend incorporating too much air and the shake had no body to it at all. It essentially dissipates on your tongue immediately without giving you the mouthfeel and satisfaction of the creaminess or even the coldness that one would expect from a milkshake. I took three sips from three different levels/areas of the cup to give this its best chance, but ultimately it was a two thumbs down experience. All in all, I deeply regret that I spent $35 having this meal DoorDashed to me... What a waste. I would still encourage anyone reading this review to try the restaurant for yourself, perhaps I caught them on a bad day.
