THE CHECK OUT PROCESS IS ATROCIOUS AND HAS BEEN FOR YEARS! They like to open 2 or 3 check out lines and then let them extend into the aisles on a regular basis. Workers and managers have NO SENSE OF URGENCY AT ALL when it is busy. I routinely wait 15-20+ minutes just to buy my groceries. This store is literally next to my house and i still drive 10 minutes to Ralphs whenever possible just to avoid this issue at this and ONLY THIS SPECIFIC Vons. The managers don't seem bothered by the inconvenience they are causing their customers (many of whom only have 20-30 minutes to shop) and they seemingly refuse to do anything to solve it. They are either understaffed or poorly managed, but it has been this way for years. If not for the location, I'm not sure why anybody would chose to shop here. And if you have to do a transaction at the middle kiosk (western union, check cashing etc) forget it. Even on slow days, it can be impossible to retrieve someone to help in a timely manner. I write this out of frustration and i hope the "higher ups" will see this very common complaint and possibly take steps to alleviate this issue. No greeting, didnt say how much the bill is, no goodnight, didnt ask if i play Monopoly or give me a piece. It is not her first time doing that, not just to me either. I ordered groceries, but didn't come as scheduled. I called their delivery line, and was on hold for 15 minutes. I was then told that they were running 1 hr late-- no apology, no verification that this was still acceptable. I was offered a credit-- $10, then raised to $25-- for the next purchase, had to call again to actually get it-- and then they denied I had been offered the $25 credit. I have never been treated as rudely as in this case. I have shopped at this store for over 40 years, but that will stop now. read more

Decided to stop by Vons to pick up some food before class. The staff was kind and helpful but the food was absolutely disgusting. The chicken tenders tasted 3 days old and the pesto salad was fishy. Someone really needs to coach and train the store manager on setting the right expectations for how their employees should treat customers. This is my neighborhood Vons, so I go here a lot. Read the reviews, they're dead on. LONG lines, ALL the time. I don't know if management is too cheap to staff appropriately or if they think that because a large portion of their customer base is CSUN kids that they don't need to provide a high level of service, but it's insulting, greedy and ridiculous. I just left there to buy a fruit tray for my son's last baseball game tomorrow. 11:30 pm on a Friday night. There were two poor checkers working (felt bad for them as almost every customer was angry). For fun I counted people in line. My line had 27 people. On the way out I counted the other line. 33! Send management a message and take your business somewhere else. See how fast they add more checkers when they start walking in on Saturday morning and finding that no one shopped there the night before. Nice grocery store. This Vons has not been historically my first choice fo grocery, but it is the closest so I end up here from time to time to pick up a few things. But lately I find myself coming here more often as they have gotten better over the years. Their organic produce section is much better than I realized, and they also started carrying my brand of milk, which was previously only available at Ralph's. THEY OUGHT TO HANG A SIGN OUT FRONT EMBLAZONED WITH THE WORDS "WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN!" Because they don't. If you have read any of my previous reviews, you know I have railed against the local Vons stores for a little while now. I eventually forswore shopping at Vons to the greatest degree possible. And to that degree I have. Yet I occasionally pop in to one of the local stores when my location, my agenda or other exigencies make doing so convenient for me. But I now have to concede that that is MY BAD. The company simply does not give a damn about its customers - or at least those of us who shop and check out in an manner that is sufficiently efficient as to be a benefit to Vons. Time and again my experience at Vons has been one of frustration brought on by the utterly inefficient manner in which check-out is allowed to happen. Worse, they offer little in the way of empathy when one complains. This evening, on my way home from work, I made the decision (a bad one) to pop in for a few items at the location near my work. I grabbed the few things I needed and got in the Express check-out...and waited and waited and waited while a couple at the front of the line was utterly vexed as to how to use their Vons card and how to pay with some sort of plastic. The couple was joined by the checker and what looked like a manager but the charade dragged on. I was on line for several minutes and only one other shopper was in front of me, but it seemed that I'd never get out of line. Four people could not solve how to get groceries paid for and checked out! So I switched to another register. A gal in front of me had quite a few items, but this looked like a promising situation since the woman at the register was having her groceries bagged and seemed ready to pay and check out. Except not. She attempted to swipe her card several times to no avail, each time being greeted with the error tone and each time repeating the process. I stopped paying attention to the proceedings after a time but it took me 11 minutes to get through the line. Her transaction took most of that time. The gal in front of me had quite a few items but was in and out in reasonable fashion. Me? My time at the register - from the time the checker said hello to the time I was walking out with my bag - was under a minute. I entered my club card, swiped my payment card, and was done. In other words, I took little of the precious resource of employee time while also allowing other customers to get to and through the line - meaning more money for Vons. I was furious that between two lines I was in Vons over 20 minutes, this despite the fact that no lines were excessively backed up with shoppers. Adding insult to injury, neither the checker nor the on-duty manager cared enough even to say, "I am sorry, sir." Instead, when I complained, I was rebuked with the rejoinder that the only solution was for me to wait on line and suffer through it. Is she serious? She may not know this, but other stores exist as options, and Ralphs, one of them, unfailingly does a better job at check out than Vons. So does Vallarta. Yet this person has to know that Vons customers have other options, so her reply to me was one of contempt. It said, "I don't really care about your business." And this was obvious. Vons can make more money with customers like me who are in and out efficiently. Yet we are treated with contempt if we dare even complain. I wonder if any store people will even care to reply to this. Probably not. They'll be too busy not helping the discourteous and ignorant more effectively and efficiently check out. They expect the rest of us to wait because they believe we have to. And they don't mind saying so. read more

I've been coming here for years. Their store is always clean, their customer service is good. They do a great job at opening registers to prevent long lines. The bathrooms are usually disgusting. They are so old and outdated and honestly, a health inspector should come take a look because if those are bathrooms that the employees use.... well I don't see how only washing your hands can be sanitary. read more

I just had the worst bathroom experience I've ever had at a grocery store. Bathroom is so unsanitary- I just stepped on something sticky - it's so nasty in there there is a grimey bottle of Lysol by the sink- this place is always understaffed which makes sense as to why the bathroom looks the way it does. I'm not blaming the employees here- they are always nice - it's the management that is terrible - whoever the store manager or regional knows very well how understaffed this place is- so please mr or mrs manager - get your act together - saving the payroll budget does not trump the sanitation of the store. I went in with my tote bag that had my laptop in it (I just got off of work and wasn't about to leave my laptop in my car for obvious reasons). When I went to the self checkout, a man who worked there approached me and accused me of putting stuff in my bag beforehand. He searched my bag TWICE! He apologized afterwards and said that it "looked weird" because I came in with a tote. I see people with big bags and backpacks in there all the time, and no one ever says anything to them. I have shopped here for almost 10 years, and spent about $100+ a week.  The past couple of years your store has started to go downhill, I don't know what it is but everything on your shelves are expired.  The first couple of times okay shame on me for not looking. A glass of sour milk disgusting!  Why is there expired milk on your shelf?  Are you trying to take the risk of selling (ummm lets see how many people come back)?  Shame on you!  I will admit I have tossed milk I have purchased the same day to not have to deal with going back in.... Expired meat!! How does Vons get away with this you may ask, easy on some of their ground beef there's no date.  So I opened the Vons packaged ground beef when I was hit with a foul odor, when I went to look at the date noticed there wasn't one.  Yes people look at what you put in your cart,  you do not  want to be the customer that grabs the non dated meat.  Vons you have got your money mean while ours went to the trash! Now, today was the last of Vons for my family!!  All the cereal on sale is expired!  It expired on February 1, 2014, today is February 3, 2014!!!!! WTF!!! Yes, I bought it not realizing and took a handful as a snack only to find it was stale!  Naturally  I thought, WFT I just bought it.  When I went to look at the date I found out why.  This time I returned it.  I seriously have to check all dairy products, and meats!!  But I have to ask why is your Greek yogurt always about a week till the expiration date! Yesterday, a customer called me a nigger several times, we had a heated exchange and I asked for security. A store manager was found and I was told they were going to put the man out but instead the store manager personally bagged the man's belongings without saying a word because, as I was told by Sheree (who I believe is an assistant manager), the man who called me a nigger was "a regular". Also, one of the African American employees there told me she gets called a nigger all the time. (!) I don't know what I expected the store to do except maybe deliver on their promise to put the man out. For them to change their minds because he's in there often is disappointing. He told the employees that he called me a nigger because I called him a wetback which is a complete and total outright lie. I continued shopping in the store because I was with a friend who needed some things and the store manager never approached me to say that he was sorry for what happened or to get my side of the story or anything. Generally a grocery store is a grocery store. You know what you're getting into price-wise before you go in because they have ads. This store is just so WTF every time I go in. For one, all of the employees act like you're inconveniencing them by asking for help. They really sigh at you when you ask for something! You'll spend 5-10 minutes at the meat counter before they realize you need help... even if you say something! The cashier completely ignored me the whole time to talk to her coworker about whatever the hell it was. He had to tell her to give me the receipt, and she just grabbed the receipt and held it out behind her in my general directions. Really? I've been to crappy grocery stores before and this is not one of them. I'll start with the negatives. Liquor is locked up. Annoying when you want something, but I'm a beer guy anyway and that's out in the open. If I ever need to just stop in real quick at night, the line is always long. Like REALLY long. Also, I feel they could benefit from installing two more cart corals in the parking lot. Only one at the front and one at the back of the lot, leads to lots of carts drifting in the middle. For these three reasons they only get a 4 star rating. Other than that this place is a wonderful grocery store. I never find myself wandering the aisle wondering where the hell something I want could possibly be located. Things are all group very appropriately and aisles seem to compliment each other as you go. Their steak selection may be fairly limited, however I have saved 51% on steaks here before. We're talking 18.00 Ribeyes for 8.50 people! Needless to say I stocked up that day. I always find myself saving a bunch when I come in here and it's not because the original price is so high that saving anything feels good. The prices are low from the start and they just get lower with a swipe of the card. The bank branch inside is very convenient and everyone there is super friendly. Same goes for the employees of Vons itself. Even when I'm by myself getting one bag's worth of groceries they still offer to have someone assist me to my car. I've bought flowers here before and it took a little digging, but they do have some gems amongst their flower selection. OH EFF-BALLS! I almost forgot the deli counter!! So there's plenty of sandwich places around, but go to the deli counter at Vons and order a freshly made sandwich from here. Blows all sandwich places out of the water! With your card you buy 7 get one free, a practice that most sandwich shops seem to have all but forgotten about. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go finish my girlfriend's sandwich. read more

This place sucks. We moved to this area about 2 months ago and on each visit to this Von's something stupid has occurred: 1. Overcharged for sodas. Took 15 minutes to resolve. 2. Checker scanned ANOTHER customer's items onto our bill, blamed us, had to locate manager to give us refund, 25 minutes! 3. Had to argue with checker to give us price indicated on shelf...told us that price should've been taken down even though it said it was good for another week. Checker gave attitude and told us "What is the big deal...its only a few bucks." In short, shopping here is never ever hassle free and you will end up with smoke coming out your ears in sheer frustration. Drive a few extra miles to Super King or Ralph's. I used to love this Vons even more than I do now. But, they stopped accepting double coupons. =( Other than that, all the employees here are extremely helpful and very nice. Horrible customer service. They don't even deserve a one star. I went to vins to purchase my favorite Indian food I had a rain check since it was on sale last week and they didn't have it in store. When I was ready for check out there was only one register, all was self checkout. I went to the register there was a lady (Lisa) on her cellphone. I've waited for a good 10 minutes she would not look at me , finally I said hello, I need to pay for these . She looked at me ( she gave me a dirty look ) and she said she was busy ( on her cellphone) and asked me to go to self check out . I told her I had rain Check to use and I needed her help . She told me to wait ( with a bad attitude) she made me wait for another 7 minutes. After she was done with her cellphone she started helping..after I was done Paying I thanked her .. I said thank you she didn't even say you're welcome.. she didn't even bag my items or ask me if I needed a bag . I had to put all my items in the cart MYSELF and take them to my car... Talk about great customer service. Once I ran in there to grab a few items while chatting on the phone, the employees STILL said hello as I shopped and continued their great customer service while i was at the checkout stand. Afterwards, I felt bad that I was on the phone the whole time. UPDATE: this place had 5 stars and i am taking one away after my recent visit. So in the water isle there was a huge spill and these das a lawsuit for a broken back waiting to happen right there. Then i went to look for Newskin and couldnt take it off the shelf. The package read "it really sticks" I thought to myself well yea it looks like it works. I come here like twice per week. I really like the friendly service here. Whether it's 6am or 6pm I have never had any bad service provided by this store. And there's people with more than 15 items in their carts filled to the brim who are clogging up the Express Lane. I saw a gentleman ask a cashier if she was open and she said she wasn't, so he calmly put his shopping basket on her table and walked away. So I am here now at 9:20 on a Sunday Evening and there are ALOT of people here and only 3 cashiers working. Do not come in here expecting to be in and out in a short time. Except to wait 20+ minutes for any transaction. I am literally in here to buy a case of water and can't believe how LONG these lines are and only three cashiers are available. The only reason they get 2/5 stars is because of how close it is to Csun. If it wasn't for that, you can almost guarantee that I would NOT come here. They should know that a high volume store should have cashiers available, if not, at least a self checkout that many other Vons I know have. read more

This is the worst grocery store I have ever been to. First off their booze is all locked up, so if you want to run in to get a quick mixer or bottle of vodka. FORGET ABOUT IT. It takes forever to get anyone to open the cabinet. They never have enough registers open and the cashiers are not the nest in the world. I went in one day to buy a 2-liter bottle of pepsi. There were 7 people in front of me in line for the one register that was open. 20 minutes later, there were 7 people in line for the one register that was open. I'm giving VONS a 4 star because of the gentleman who assisted me in the deli section, I do not recall your name so I apologize in advance. He was very tentative, and assisted me by making a breakfast burrito. He was honest when it came to an ingredient (potato) that they did not have available at the time, and when they ran out of tortilla's he took the liberty to literally run and grab some more. If that isn't efficient customer service then he definitely made a new category in it. After I received my breakfast burrito from the sales associate, he greeted me with, "Have a great rest of the day." I definitely did, all thanks to the way I started my day off. I hope to run into more sales associates like this gentleman, when I visit VONS in the future. read more

Been a Vons customer for years. Basic customer service is needed in the fresh food section. If you advertise something honor it based on what is available and not what you say. If I see 9 pieces of fried chicken and it's 8 for $5. Give me the 8 pieces. It's not a customer's fault if you have no legs. Ready to shop for more items but this kind of made me walk away.
