ok, this is going to be a weird one star review.
i've been a foot and hand model for many years, so have had more than my share of pedicures and manicures. i ain't no 10 buck cut 'em and polish 'em gal, though i'm not above trying the non-spa places. those are usually where you actually get the best overall experience.
most of my time at vn was indeed good... well, the first part was a little odd - i had read the reviews to take my own polish, so i did, thank goodness, because i actually tried 3 of the colors on the wall and they ALL "separated" (i.e. they looked like i had klingon skin right over my nail)
the ladies were all fabulous. my technician, laura, was especially sweet. and yes, as noted in other reviews, she did some magic on my cuticles. her pedicure was fine (the chairs are the normal massage chairs, though - nothing to write home about) as was her manicure. i wish that they were more efficient and done at the same time, but they switch you from the foot-only area to the manicure tables.
the clients were also a hoot. i met some fun ladies - all more than willing to talk about which restaurants to go to, where they used to live (several recent transplants among us finding our way through the city) and all manner of lady-speak... though i actually did see 3 gentlemen getting their nails done (woo freakin' hoo for that!!!)
i got my keys out and paid before polish (of course) and afterwards (using my polish, but their base and top coat) i dried TWICE, just to make sure that they were chip-proof. i sat in that little chair with my nails under the light for 20 full minutes.
i got to my next appointment (which, believe it or not was a hand modeling audition - greeeeaaaattt) and realized that i had 4 (4???) dinged nails. now, again, i'm no nail newbie... i know how to delicately treat a manicure. so 4!?!?!? and they weren't chips, 3 were literally gashes on the nail into the paint. the fourth (which i'll upload a picture of) was insane - it literally had slid off my nail! you can't really tell in the pic, but it looks like waves receding from a beach. there's no gash or mark, but the polish literally buckled and moved to the side, creating waves of polish. i couldn't tell if it was because of their top/base coat being horrible, or if the polish was simply too thick. i'm guessing the former, because even with thick polish, it should stick.
bottom line - i paid almost $40 including tip for this and i had to change it when i got home, not to mention explain to the casting director that i'd JUST had a manicure. really.
much as i loved gabbin with the girls, a better bet for that $40 would be 20 minutes with a good shrink. read more
