Wow... Sums up the experience we had at Viva. The young ladies that were working while we went for lunch one Saturday afternoon were incredibly helpful. They made sure to explain all the items on the menu and encouraged us to try some things we never would have considered. Viva Mexico makes some fantastic homemade salsas, be sure to try the Chipotle. I have eaten here many times, multiple of them being for birthday or graduation parties, and I love coming! The staff are always friendly and attentive, which makes my experience even more enjoyable. Overall quite disappointing. We were there in the daytime and they had every single window curtain completely closed so it felt much like sitting in the basement. It seems that their major clientele​ must be vampires :-) More importantly, the food was very mediocre. Would recommend?: Yes. Will go again?: Yes. We went here on a beautiful Sunday night in August. Inside it was very nice, but we wanted to and did eat outdoors. Very relaying atmosphere in an area of the Flemington outlets accessible only by a path. When we arrived there were no other diners, but the 7 or 8 tables outside were almost all occupied by the time we left. It was very pleasant. Wait staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu is interesting and has all of the classics -- enchiladas, burritos, tamales and chimichangas. Plus several other choices (see their website). Large kids' menu as well. I had the beef and cheese chimichanga. I expected the giant dish I've had at other Mexican restaurants. Instead I got two chimchangas about the size if your average hot dog bun, sliced diagonally to facilitate dipping in the sour cream, guac and a reddish sauce that comes in a small dish. (Reminded me of a giant spring roll.) I was afraid it would not be filling, but it was very good and, having had a bowl of thick black bean soup as an appy, I was sated in the end. It's hard to give a restaurant 5 stars, in my opinion. It has to be something really special. So a 4 from me means it's very good and I will recommend it and go there again, especially on nice summer evenings. Maybe next time on a Wednesday night when the Mariachi band plays. read more

Cute little place in a cute area. Prices are very inexpensive. I love the outdoor area, would love to come, bring some margaritas and enjoy! The reason for only 3 stars, sadly I think that's all the food is worth. First off, the chips are decent and the salsa is very fresh and very good. But entrees? I had the burrito, wife had a combo platter. The chicken in both our dishes was dry and completely flavorless. Like, there was no hint of flavor in the chicken at all. Zero. The green sauce was good, everything else was adequate, but I can sum up like this: when you're first eating it, you're underwhelmed but trying to convince yourself it's better than it is. Then later in the car ride home you come to terms, turn to your wife, and say "you know that really wasn't very good. Was kind of tasteless and overall disappointing". And she agrees. And then you talk about how you can't trust people's opinions and reviews online. read more

We waited an HOUR for our food to come, and almost 15 minutes just to be seated. The food has NO flavor, as if they are preparing it for elderly people, who have a low salt/spice diet. We ordered vegetarian version of fajitas and enchiladas, and they made NO adjustment to the price, even though their costs are much lower, due to not serving us the meat portion of the meals. For the fajitas, they used the cheapest vegetables possible...it was loaded with carrots slices and jicama. worst fajita I have ever eaten. We would NOT go back on a bet. 53 dollars for just two people, (no drinks, as they do not serve alcohol, just sodas.) For the lack of quality and timeliness and flavor, it was just not worth the time or the price. Nothing worse than paying a lot for something, and not enjoying it at all. read more

We have going there for past few years. I agree with some reviews that they do not seem to care for their customers. I recently had a very bad experience. I consider my self their regular and usually get same entree every time. Last time I got a beef Burrito and when I told the server I ordered bean Burrito, she took my plate back to the kitchen. I was expecting she will come back with right order, instead came back with my plate and told me that I had indeed ordered beef Burrito. I told her that with her attitude and poor service, she has ruined my dinner. I did not even get an apology from her. The owner was not there so I had no one to go to. I told her that she has lost her regular costumer with her poor attitude. I think Viva Maxico needs hard education on customer service. read more

Love, love, love this place! The salsa and chips are very good (very fresh and very good chips). The guacamole is also very good ...my husband would lick the bowl if he could. We have eaten here several times (with and without friends) and each of our meals have been wonderful. I love the tamales meal and my husband loves the enchiladas with salsa verde. We really have eaten many of their specials and entrees because we've been here so often and have never been disappointed. The only negative (but Americans may not notice if they are not familiar with black beans and yellow rice) is that the black beans are bland and the rice is a little dry. But those items do not take away from the wonderful flavor of the main components of the entree. Finally the desserts are great...best tres leches ever and the flan...well that is to die for!!!! I've had a lot of good Mexican (in the US) from Dallas to Florida to LA. Viva Mexico tops them all with authenticity, taste, friendliness, and decor. My son loved the chicken fajitas and I enjoyed the stuffed peppers with ground beef. Loved the mariachi band too! Oh - and get the Churros with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce!!! read more

The menu was very limited and too expensive for what it is. I ordered Steak fajitas and, while it was decent (nothing spectacular), it was way too $$ for that. Very good food- not superb, as I've had better, more flavorful Mexican food at other places. I've typically eaten dinner here on Fridays or Saturdays. Can get very busy with wait times on weekends. Make reservations for larger groups. We've typically eaten with a larger group, I like the fact that its BYO and they will open your beer or wine bottles for you. Service is usually good, can be a bit slow/spotty when it gets very busy. Just be patient! On most recent visit, I found the chips they served a bit stale. Salsa is quite good. I like the enchiladas and tamales, I also like their Tampiquena steak. The chimichangas were a bit on the dry side. The rice could be more moist and more seasoning. The black beans would benefit from some Oaxaca cheese. The burritos are very large, quality is good but not great. read more

Excellent. Best tamales outside of Mexico or Texas. Family owned and run. Service what you might expect from a family operation: friendly and helpful, but perhaps not polished. Go for the food. Love the new location - the food and service still top notch...the prices are still the same. love the flank steak for under $20 - you can't beat the price and the quality...My husband and I bring our favorite tequila and sit and sip our tequila while enjoying the house chips and the salsa is the best I have ever had anywhere... we usually end up ordering another portion for appy's - it is that good - we get the complimentary and then order more, which is $1.50 for more chips and $2.00 for more salsa..The chips are not greasy at all and salsa is always fresh...It's a great little place, it's a family owned establishment and every one aims to please....A great little gem....definitely worth a try.... read more

Pros: Food is consistently good, authentic and fresh; staff is friendly and prices are reasonable. Cons: Unlike most Mexican restaurants, first order of chips (very small basket) and salsa is free but then you must pay if you request more. This is a great authentic Mexican restaurant!! Nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and really good food! Love that it is bring your own too! Chicken tortilla soup is really good, especially on a cold day! Can't beat the value at this place. Went there twice, once at the old location and once at the new one to see if there was an improvement. Overpriced for the bland food, charged for chips, way overrated. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they are the only Mexican restaurant in the Flemington area. They need to get a chef who can actually prepare good dishes rather than cooks from villages. My Mexican dishes are far superior and more flavorful. Disappointing experience. read more
