Agave is a great Mexican-Italian fusion restaurant in Flemington. Their birria tacos are a popular choice and come with consommé for dipping, but we loved everything we ordered! Hungry for more NJ food finds? Follow @wonderwithlyss on Instagram & TikTok! read more

We lived in the area for a little over 5 years and just now discovered this little gem! We shared the empanada appetizer and I got the pork osso bucco and mango smoothie. The chicken/potato empanada were definitely not what we expected. The filling was more like chicken flavored mashed potatoes with a few shreds of chicken. It was more a deep fried perogie than an empanada. Not quite what we were looking for. The osso bucco is a lot of food, definitely enough for at least 2 meals. I did wish it came with more vegetables than the few spoonfuls of tomato chunks on top. Mango smoothie was delightful read more

Despite being such a long standing restaurant in the community, I was shocked to find this place practically in my own backyard and I had never noticed before. Agave seems to come out of nowhere on approach, and actually could pass as a home from the outside, but once you're in, it's a nicely themed restaurant. The menu had various Mexican options and even a few Italian ones. We started with chicken and potato empanadas, which were unfortunately about 90% potato and maybe 10% chicken. It had good flavor but the prevalence of just potato was very disappointing. Fortunately, my Chimmichanga for dinner was a different story and brimming with proteins. It was so large I only ate half and tucked the 2nd half away for a future snack. Great flavor throughout and came with a side of guac, pico, and sour cream. The mango and pineapples lemonades we had were also very flavorful and our waiter was extremely proactive and attentive, which is always appreciated. Especially with the lack of good Mexican food in the area, I'd definitely come back! read more

We have visited this restaurant several times before and generally liked the food, but today's experience was bad enough that we will not be returning. We ordered a veggie burrito and were served a chicken burrito instead. Mistakes happen, but what was astonishing was the restaurant's refusal to correct their own mistake. They still expected me to pay for an item I did not order and could not eat. After some pushback, I decided it was not worth arguing further and paid, but the whole interaction was bizarre and completely unacceptable. Good food does not make up for service like this. Serving the wrong item is one thing; refusing to take responsibility for it is another. For a restaurant to mishandle a vegetarian order and then insist that the customer absorb the cost shows a remarkable lack of concern for the customer. We had built up quite a bit of goodwill toward this place from previous visits, but unfortunately it only takes one experience like this to erase it. This restaurant is now completely off our list. I also noticed that a significant number of the glowing reviews appear to come from accounts with only a handful of reviews. I obviously cannot know why that is, but after today's experience, it does make me look at the overall rating with considerably more skepticism. read more

Not sure what has happened at Agave. First two visits over last 12 months. Very good. Authentic. Tasty Today, bad. Real bad. Will not return. Carne asada served without cheese salsa sour cream or taste. Three sauces served in squeeze bottles has old dried up sauce around the top. Disgusting. There's more to say but why bother. Will not return. Don't go. It's a waste of time and money. read more

I ordered the birria tacos for takeout which came with four tacos and all the right sides: birria sauce, red and green salsa, onions, cilantro, lime, cucumber, and chips. The flavors came together really nicely when adding in all the toppings and green sauce and overall tasted fresh and satisfying. Only thing I didn't love was the birria sauce itself. It was a different flavor than the classic version and was missing that rich slow-cooked taste from the spices and vegetables. Overall, it was a good satisfying meal. read more

Got takeout from here. The restaurant is bright and pretty even if the outside of the restaurant was dark. We got a veggie burrito, smothered green chilli chicken burrito and chicken empandas. Food was good. We enjoyed everything we got. I would have liked a little more flavor on the chicken burrito since it seems without the green chilli sauce, it would have been a little plain. However, green chilli sauce was good and made the dish. Price for 4 pieces of empanadas was a little steep but I guess thats inflation :(. Guac that came with empanadas was lacking some zing (lime and onions). Veg burrito was good. Would order again. read more

Beautiful weather today so decided to try Agave in Flemington. I ordered carnitas tacos to go and I was glad I did! The corn tortillas were full of tasty pork and accompanied by cilantro, onions, limes, radishes and cucumbers. Red and green sauces also. Staff is very polite and provided me with a menu for my next visit. Agave has a very cool vibe to it. I look forward to eating here soon! read more

This is a cute little decorated spot off the beaten path. Our waitress was nice and super busy with most of the tables . They are a BYOB . You can bring the liquor and they can make your margaritas on ice . The menu is pretty decent but not overwhelming like some . We ordered chicken and birria tacos , and a burrito . Portions are pretty big but flavor profile just didn't hit the spot for me but tasty enough. We sat at a high top by the counter which wasn't the best spot considering all the customers picking up orders are all up your back so it was a bit annoying. All in all this place was pretty decent . read more

First time dining experience at Agave. Our server Stephanie was wonderful, the food was super delicious and all made a great first impression. Shrimp tostones were awesome, street corn was excellent and so were our entrees. Wonderful date night for my wife and I. We will definitely be back. read more

**just found out they stole their instagram photos from @chefkodak in atlanta.. ** It was okay. Overpriced for basic diner food. We were very hyped by their instagram page and the photos look amazing, but the actual food is nothing like the photos. The birria cheesesteak had slices of yellow american just draped on top, no cheese mixed in at all. Fries were just basic frozen fries. Wings were good. Steak and Shrimp tacos were good but again, nothing special. For $28 a plate, not worth it. There are better places to spend that kind of money for better quality meals. Again, Diner quality. read more

One of the most flavorful burritos I've had. Prices are reasonable. Great service. In a nice location.

Well... I did come back for dinner - I brought family visiting me in NJ twice (Nov /Dec) and both times we had a great meal and family were impressed... Service was excellent - friendly and a great ambassador for the menu and the restaurant. Birria Tacos and Chicken Jalapeno Milanese were my choices and they were great. Brought a good red and my guests (and I) were happy campers. read more

Hidden Gem, very cozy and beautifully decorated. The staff was super warm and friendly, especially Tracy, she was a great waitress and very knowledgeable of all entrees and made great recommendations. The food was authentic and seasoned to perfection. The food portions are very large. Burritos and tacos definitely didn't disappoint. Great for a girls night or even date night. Love it and will definitely be back. read more

The current menu is 90% Mexican, so the Italian fusion is missing. Sat in the outside area, and it's covered with many tarps hooked together. Be careful if rain in forecast, as there are gaps, especially in the middle of the area. The plastic black tables had white stains on them. There is a long bench seat against the "window wall" . We had initially been seated against the plastic window wall, and there was the smell of cigarettes from a near area/neighbor. The music was a pop/rap playlist that didn't lend to the dining atmosphere. read more

Helping some friends out in White Horse, and we were looking for restaurants and saw Italian, Chinese, Italian, Japanese? nah, Italian, American... and Mexican. Mexican won. Well, Mexican fusion. Not really my style. I got the quesadilla here with al pastor, and I asked for it spicy. I can vouch that there is no spice at this restaurant, don't even bother. The meat had AMAZING flavor, but the order was absolutely soaked in oil by the time it got back home. Never seen that much oil in Mexican food. We had a first-time coupon for chips/guac, and the avocado is very poorly mashed in the guac - huge chunks throughout, not really the way to go. But it's fresh! And the chips are extra-overdone. They were wheat chips, and I imagine you could get corn since this place is very gluten-free accommodating, and that's probably gonna be a better bet if they offer it. Dunno. Anyway, food was ready a few minutes early when we placed our to-go order. Restaurant seems bright and happy inside, not the biggest but it's in a historic building. My impression is that the food is fresh here, service is friendly, but it's really not authentic Mexican. It's Tex-Mex for the American palette. In the end, as much as I wanted to add a fourth star because my friends enjoyed it and will definitely be returning, the downfalls of *no spice despite ordering spice, *too much oil, *not the best preparation doom this to 3. read more

My wife and I stopped by for dinner last weekend. We've ordered take out from Agave before but we felt we really needed to dine in to judge. Appetizers are not pictured (nachos and empanadas were both excellent.) I really appreciated the nachos were not covered in cheese sauce and sour cream. I love both but too much and the nachos get soggy. My wife ordered the fajita bowl and loved it. Steak was well seasoned, and rice and veggies were cooked perfectly. I had the birria tacos. Absolutely outstanding. The dipping sauce that comes with the tacos is made from the drippings of the birria. It's essentially a Mexican au jus. It's the perfect compliment to the tacos. BYOB. Make sure to make reservations. Seating is limited and dinning room will fill up fast at dinner time. read more

This place is super cute. I love the interior decor. It's cheery and vibrant yet also cozy at the same time. Not tacky at all. They did a fantastic job with the interior. Your meal starts off with house made chips and guacamole salsa. Both are delicious. Our waiter said the salsa was spicy but it was not. We stuck with Hispanic themed menu items. I got the tostadas with carnitas. They were excellent. The carnitas were very tender and flavorful. I added a side of pico de gallo and used some of the guacamole salsa to perfect my tostadas. My friend got the Mulita with carne asada. I have never heard of this dish before. It's layers of meat and cheese in between corn tortillas and topped with a bunch of deliciousness! Give this one a try. For dessert we shared a tres leches cake and got decaf cappuccinos. These both were also wonderful. The cake for this tres leches cake was a little more dense and a little less spongey. Our waiter was ultra friendly and patient. The food came out quickly too. The bathroom is roomy and clean! Can't wait to come back! read more

Omg this food? Soooo impressively good. Authentic flavors, moist chicken and steak, very flavorful, adorable decor and great ambiance, and well worth every penny. Really deserves 3.5. The queso and chorizo app was great. You have to eat it fast before the cheese congeals. The tacos were good. Just $4 a taco for small tacos seems a bit much. We got California burrito also that was solid. Staff was very friendly. Place is cute. read more

New Mexican/Italian bistro/cafe where the Stanton General Store used to be. Nice breezy outdoor patio. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was great. The ceviche was wonderful as was the huarache & birria (blue tortilla topped with beef marinated in chillies). The agave nachos with Al Pastor steak was very good and the impossible burger (real beef not plant according to the server topped with egg and bacon) was cooked medium rare perfectly and tasted great. I followed Agave on Instagram for a year before I got there! The food was as good as their mouth watering photos. Highly recommend.

Went there for a birthday dinner with a large group. The experience was excellent. They were so friendly and provided great customer service. Our server, Jay, was also terrific! We had nachos and empanadas as appetizers and they tasted great. Our main dishes varied as we were a large group, but everyone said they enjoyed their meal. For dessert we had churros with ice cream and a cheesecake which hit the spot. I would definitely come back here again for dinner. read more
